Built-in resource packs (vanilla, programmer art) are incompatible

Vanilla resource pack shows as "Made for a newer version of Minecraft" in the resource pack menu

How to reproduce

  • Open 1.16.1

  • Go to the resource pack menu
=> See the integrated resource pack be "Incompatible".

Seems like the pack version of the internal textures was updated to "6" even for 1.16.1, even though 1.16.1 is still on "5".

Not sure if this is related to this issue, but it seems that the piglin brute sounds can be played with the playsound command in 1.16.1.

Cannot reproduce in 1.16 rc1. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

But the pack format in 1.16.1.jar/pack.meta is still 5

How can I reproduce this?

@Jason This bug has been fixed in 1.16.2 rc1. 1.16.2 is set to release next week, and should contain the fix.

it has appeared with addition of 1.16.2 rc1, so no, it's not fixed

good to know i'm not alone here--i was extremely frustrated when the issue persisted after reinstalling all of Minecraft twice. i'd like to echo Marty's question: why on Earth has the pack format been changed for a minor update? we typically see pack formats last through several major updates, this is very out of place and annoying for creators.

Given the pack version changed (however unexpectedly), my question now is where does one find details about the differences between version 6 and version 5?

Since this will not affect 1.16.2 when it releases, we will leave it as it is - the assets still work correctly, they only show up incorrectly in the menu.
