Bees have a northwest wandering bias

This essentially clones MC-166980. per comment

The bug

Bees have a tendency to pathfind towards the north-west. So far, I have tested this only for bees spawned using /summon: YouTube video

This issue seems to have persisted, according to this comment for 1.16.1, information from MC-206396 in 1.16.4 (although the game is modified), and having tested it myself. I cannot say if it is less or more biased than it was before 20w12a/20w22a.

An easy way to reproduce this would be to spawn them in at 0,0 and watch where they go after a few minutes, but one can also perform a /kill command with xyz/dxdydz values to count the bees in each quadrant. This yielded ~6 times as many bees in the northwest quadrant than each other quadrant individually, after ~5 minutes of waiting.

I think MC-181827 is a better fit, MC-166980 was a bigger issue that caused bees to wander thousands of blocks away without returning to their home hive.

Can confirm it's still very much an issue in 1.16.4

Confirming. Makes bees borderline unusable without closing them in, and even if they are closed in they'll often seem to forget their home and stare northwest.

I can confirm this is an issue in 1.16.4. I bred many bees with plenty of bee hives in an area only to have them disappear. I later discovered them in the middle of an ocean to the northwest hundreds of blocks away.

Niknokinater

1.16.5- I'm still seeing bees fly away forever. It's isn't uncommon to cross them a biome away (I only seem to notice lone bees in plains) in seemingly any direction. The one in the screenshot I posted travelled southwest from the forest in the background.

Brevort

Relates to MC-187920. Every time I have bees that aren't completely closed in, they end up in the village which is on a mountain roughly 16 chunks northwest of my old bee farm.

Can confirm this is still very much a problem in latest snapshot 21w17a and every version below
I've bred up tens of bees already and all of them get lost somewhere over an ocean to the northwest of my map never to return home again.
Makes keeping bee's a complete waste of time and is ruining build ideas that involve bees.

yes i tested it my self the out comes where the "same"

KirbAvion

Confirmed in 1.17. Bees keep wandering from their hives at -50, 10 to upwards of -200, -200, ignoring every flower on the way and never coming back.

KirbAvion

Confirmed in 1.17.1 release candidate 1.

ampolive

I have tested this with an armor stand marking the bee position every couple ticks (with a setup based in MC-184530) with about 10 to 20 bees. It is a very small sample size, but the bias seems to be subtle.

I can confirm this is happening in my current survival game 1.17.1

After long periods away from my base; adventuring thousands of blocks away, nether trips, long mining periods, Ive been noticing my bees disappearing.

I have 5 bees nests and 2 hives and all bees disappear.

Travelling west and north west I noticed lots of bees flying around with no nest in sight and use flowers to lead them back to my base.

Ive noticed this several hundred blocks away.

Im now doing this regularly to maintain my bee population. generally takes a few days to regather 12 or so bees. They are always off to the west and north west.

violine1101

This might be fixed along with MC-248225.

wobst.michael

Can this still be reproduced in 1.18.2?

ampolive

This appears to still occur in 22w12a, even after the fix of MC-248225.

Still apply to 1.19.1 and also to allays

Yes, can confirm this is still happening in 1.19.1. My girlfriend made a large hive structure with an east facing entrance, and a plethora of flowers outside the entrance. A large majority of the bees end up flying out of the entrance of the structure then heading north-west and getting lost, never to return to the hive.

Edit: here is a video showing what I described. Server is 1.19.1 vanilla.

Brain81505

Can confirm in 23w04a and 1.19.3

Still happening in 1.20.2. My world is very old, so no bees have naturally generated within about 3km of spawn. My hives near spawn slowly empty over time, and I regularly find pollen-laden bees about 500 blocks away to the northwest

bdm68

Affects 1.21.1. I have an old world. I have seen bees wandering northwest several times over a few years. Bees typically wander off northwest until they end up in lazy chunks where they can be found later. The only way I can keep bees is in an enclosed space or stored in hives in a chest. It is not possible to populate spawn chunks in old worlds with unenclosed bees without them wandering off.

SirDaddicus

I'm seeing the bias may have shifted to be more northerly rather than northwesterly. Anecdotal evidence only, though. But I've seen baby bees (that only I've created recently) 50-100 blocks almost due north of their nests/hives.
