Placing a map into an item frame and removing it does not remove the green player marker

When i created a map and placed it into a item frame it created a green marker, as it should. but when i removed it, the markers where still there. while this might not be as big as an issue, when placing the same map in multiple item frames it creates a potential mess for pixel art and getting an idea of building

MC-73 is back, consider reopening it 😉

@unknown, old reports are not reopened if they were indeed previously fixed; new reports (like this one) are preferred. Only when the fix attempt didn't actually fix it does the report get reopened.

Can confirm in 1.19.1.

Occurs in 1.19.2

Also adds a marker even when the map is locked.

octojen

While adding markers to locked maps appears to be by design, (or at least a diffrent bug)  it does make this bug more problematic since there may be no way to re-create the map without the marker.

Furthermore, there are no commands you can use to fix this.  The only way to fix this is to hand edit the map.dat file on the filesystem. (well beyond most people's ability)

(Anyone that wants to do this, I recommend NBTExplorer, open map file with it, find where the item frams is listed, and simply delete it)

A simple solution to problems on already created maps is to remove all green dots, and make the players update the maps in item frames after this fix.

fwiw still appears to be an issue, thanks @octojen for info on NBTExplorer, quick and easy workaround

Watch out. This happened to me even when I went into the Nether to avoid it. As a mapmaker, this is challenging my sanity. 😃

Confirming this is still happening in v.1.20.51

I even turned an entire chunk into dirt and then air with a /fill command thinking maybe I just missed the frame but the marker(s) are still there.

Just glad I found this thread but now I'm wondering if I should continue in my current world or abandon and start over since this is an integral part of the world I'm building.

Reply from @unknown:
There is no 1.20.51 in Minecraft: Java Edition. Please make sure you are in the correct project section before commenting and confirming issues.

For those that still have old green markers on old maps in 1.21. Old markers will remain until a map is removed from an item frame at the location that caused it to be placed on the map to begin with. The map markers appear to be registered as X, Y, Z coordinates, and all three X, Y and Z need to match. It took some time to figure out the right height, but finally the display map for my game is free of green spam.

So happy for this to finally be resolved.
