The icons on several buttons do not adhere to the UI pixel grid

The icons on several buttons are scaled incorrectly, creating pixels with irregular sizes. It looks as though the icons are squished into the shape of the button.

This affects all buttons with icons in the pause menu, most buttons in the friends overlay screen, and the friends button in the main menu.

YES! Thank you so much for pointing this out! This issue’s been bugging me ever since Mojang released the new peer-to-peer Friends system.

In my opinion, the buttons on the pause menu are unnecessary and don’t fit. I think the new Friends features could be placed in the “Multiplayer…” menu under a separate tab, allowing the text buttons to persist.

Incase anyone’s curious on what icons are incorrectly scaled, here’s what I was able to find:

  • “Friends” (on Main menu and Pause menu)

  • “Remove Friend” (in Friends menu)

  • “Report Bugs” (on Pause menu)

  • “Give Feedback” (on Pause menu)

  • “Report Players” (on Pause menu)

And yes, this issue still persists on 26.2 Pre-Release 2.

This is most noticeable on displays that are 1080p or lower. Sometimes it looks like Steve and Alex are squinting.

It looks like some of these were cropped to selection, some where untouched while creating them and the friends button itself was ripped from Bedrock 😛

Most of them are easy to fix, as they fit into the 15x15 grid all of the other icons use. The bug is 13x13, player reporting is 15x14, social interactions is 20x20 (but with a lot of empty space), and friends is 16x16. The friends one would need the most work, as it fills the entire space.

The easiest way to fix it is to make the sides 2 wide instead of 3 and move down Steve’s head by one pixel, though you still will miss out on seeing a bit of Steve’s nose unfortunately.

Update: All of these issues are still present in 26.2 release candidate 2. I’m honestly surprised none of the developers noticed this, especially since most of the warped icons are on the pause menu.

I’m pretty sure this issue will persist to the full release of 26.2. I wish Mojang just kept the simple text menu from before! Why did we need icons on the pause menu in the first place?

I was able to fix this with a resource pack, by replacing these button icons with 15x15 sprites so that they don’t need to stretch/squish.

Nice work on that resource pack, proving it can be done! Now, if only Mojang could take notice. I mean, if a player can solve the problem with a resource pack, then it can’t be too much work… right?

After all, Mojang recently patched a bug where a single random pixel was discolored in the crafting menu. Why not this one then? Oh well… guess we need more votes!

I think I can confirm the Fix for 26.4 Snapshot 3

Nice work Mojang, looks great!

More of a suggestion however, I think FortisMarc was correct on changing the following code to make the button white spacing look better. I do think the 8 meta-pixel spacing looks more consistent than the current 4 meta-pixel spacing, just incase a mod comes along. If not, someone should make a suggestion!

Wow, you’re on top of things!
