The bug
Users are able to increase their gamma/brightness above the level that is limited in-game, without the use of any mods. This causes a lot of controversy as to whether or not it should be bannable on servers, as it's not classed as a mod/hack as neither is required, but it shouldn't be allowed since it makes the night vision potion obsolete.
How to reproduce
Go to
%appdata%
, then.minecraft
folder.Open
options.txt
and change the gamma field to above its 1.0 limit eg: "gamma:50".This provides full brightness, which is usually limited in-game.

Even if we restore this bug with mods, we still won't get banned. It is even mentioned on one of server discussion!
General discussion related to this bug should happen elsewhere, as the comments section is just for discussion relevant to the bug report.
I mean this really just adds an extra step for anyone who wants to use this. Now people just have to use a lightmap. I don't agree with this change at all, as it was super helpful for pretty much anytime you needed to see in dark places to show something off, and it's basically player preference whether to use it or not.
It is also a big advantage over people who don't edit game files. This was never a feature, and a mistake in the design (no verification of the value); that was corrected. If you want to show off a build, use night vision.
I dont think that is a bug.night vision potion often have particle effect. If we turn them off ,we cant see other necessary effect.Like HYPIXEL SERVER,it's dark in it.Players need to turn gamma to make the screen bright. It should not be banned.I hope Mojang can allow this again, and make some necessary file to help the server who needs to ban it and make some files for them but not ban it in all the game
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.
