Tried to create multiple folders to use the new beta option, but very often the launcher will mix up the default and the custom folder, not downloading all sound files and starting the game in the wrong folder.

Yes, any version below 1.6 ignores custom directories. Note that Beta 1.7.3 used to work, but doesn't now in Launcher 1.3.8.

It keeps removing my 1.7.4 profile's custom settings for things that were added later (such as re-adding heldItemTooltips and removing advancedItemTooltips). It's really annoying.

@unknown could have marked it Invalid himself, if he so chose. Or Won't Fix. But he left it open. I think his comment was only to let people know it wasn't a high priority, or something they were going to actively try to fix. If some novel idea on how to fix it occurs to them, they might implement it, but it's not something they're going to focus on.

I can't reproduce this. Do you have multiple Beta versions and where do you have the other directories? Could you please include clear steps to reproduce in the description
It looks like old Minecraft versions to do not use completely their directory but the default .minecraft folder as well

Using the java launcher on Linux all old versions are able to use their directory completely, so it's at least possible.

I can confirm this. For me, any versions between 1.2.5 and 1.6.4 (but those versions themselves are fine) ignore the custom directory entirely, and just save everything to .minecraft.

Is this the same issue that i am having? I can't get my launcher to open outside of %appdata% even though I have a .bat file linking it to that path! It completely ignores it. Is there a fix for this, like different .bat information i can use?

No, @Tiya tehJak, it has nothing to do with whatever you're trying. Please do not hijack other people's threads. This Bug is about the minecraft profile directories that can be set in the launcher.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft Launcher version 2.0.805 / 2.0.806? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.
Keep in mind that the "Resolved"-Status on this ticket just means "Answered", and that we are waiting for further information on whether this issue still exists or not. It will be reopened it as soon as the requested information has been delivered.

Lies! I can't even downgrade to 1.2 without it always, ALWAYS going into the .minecraft folder right now. This launcher seems to discriminate against particular versions, in a purely-statistical way. The bug is back, and it never truly went away.

Still happens to me in launcher 2.1.1462. When I launched Minecraft version 1.0, there's no sound for some reason, and it showed an empty world list, instead of my worlds in my custom directory. When I created a new world, it just crashed the game. When I relaunched it, it THEN uses my custom directory, but with no sound still. I deleted the new folders created in .minecraft (not touching the launcher files), and now it's back to using that folder by default. I can't tell what the heck is causing this issue, but it's frustrating.

Same issue here, on launcher version 2.1.2481, I specify the game directory(for version 1.12.2) to be E:\DirtBlock\.minecraft yet the launcher when it launches defaults to %appdata%\.minecraft folder still....rending all the game versions mute except the latest which is 1.13......and 1.12.2 is no where to be found in the game version list.....
EDIT: So I snooped around and it appears, at least according to this answer: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/100122 is not possible unless you're happy to start the launcher from a batch/bash file or create a sym link in %appdata%\.minecraft directory to your custom directory; which brings up another question, why do you have a non-functional game directory specifier option if it doesn't work as intended, hm?

I'm unable to reproduce it on 2.1.2481 using a new instance with a version I haven't downloaded before - it used the folder straight away, and the sound works as well for me. Can anyone else report a different result?

I'm seeing this problem right now with Beta 1.7.3 in Launcher 2.1.5387 on Windows 7 x64, but it's semi-random - sometimes it works on the first try, and sometimes I need to launch it dozens of times before it works.
