As this comment below notes, the bug affects items that use query.item_slot_to_bone_name(c.item_slot)
in their geometry files. The problem seems to be that enabling any kind of resource pack on the host prevents the context variable c.item_slot
from accessing data from non-host players. Consistent with that, in outside discussion I've been shown a content log error (which I don't get for some reason) that says:
binding expression q.item_slot_to_bone_name(q.main_hand_item_use_duration > 0.0f ? 'head': 'main_hand') returned a bone name that doesn't exist.
binding expression q.item_slot_to_bone_name(q.main_hand_item_use_duration > 0.0f ? 'head': 'main_hand') did not return a name?
Placement for the shield in the offhand for player 2 in split screen puts the shield in different positions on the player

I've noticed when playing with my friends that sometimes the shield will look normal to me but my friends will see it in my face. However, sometimes I will also see it in my face in 3rd person. Sometimes the shield will change position when I change skins, or at least that's what it looks like to me.

I'm having the same issue and as the second player on split screen the shield keeps obscuring half my screen on the left! It's so annoying and makes it hard to play. Why does no one answer these threads?

Are they going to fix this? I got into Minecraft maybe 6 months ago and learned that I could play split screen with my son recently. Player 2 cannot hold Shields or anything properly without it taking up half the screen and it looks weird from my perspective. Can this be fixed?

The blocking of half the screen for player 2 in split screen has been happening to me too for a while now (on Nintendo Switch)
It might be useful to know that it seems to happen only when player 1 is looking in the direction of player 2, no matter how far away the players are from each other. When player 1 is looking elsewhere, the shield appears to function normally.

Hi, the shields are weird, as my husband on xbox one has the shield going right through his head and body
[media]. When I use the same shield, on android it looks fine, I give it back to him and it goes back to cutting him in half.

The reason this happens is due to the use of the bindings in the attachable models; 'query.item_slot_to_bone_name(c.item_slot)', which binds the item to a certain bone (in most cases the right or left hand). This works fine when only viewing yourself or entities that aren't players, but for some reason when viewing other players, it seems to break and default to the parent models origin, in the case of players, the neck.
Hopefully this can be resolved as it makes making and animating attachables much easier than the older methods.

I'm adding video files from mega.nz pertaining to this bug since Mediafire seems to be unreliable with videos. So with messing around with this bug, I learned a bit. Sometimes it can be triggered by 'player two' by messing around with their character creator profile, which seems to give different wrong positions for crossbows, tridents, and shields.

This glitch has expanded to the Spyglass in 1.17 and can be triggered in some instances by by messing around with their character creator profile as 'player two', which will give the Spyglass the same positions as the Trident depending on which Character Creator Character you choose, which can most commonly appear in the neck, though in rare cases can appear in the wrong hand, or coming out of the crotch

I've noticed that changing skins within a minecraft world may also trigger this visual bug.

After much testing it appears the cause of this issue is the Alex model, or "skinny arm" model

Given PS4 Bedrock 1.17.10 in split screen mode
when player two is holding a shield in their right hand
Then about 1/10th of the right side of their screen will be black.
This black strip expands and contracts from the right to the left as the player moves. At times the strip obstructs the player's view of their surroundings.
This is not just cosmetic this is having a negative effect on the gameplay.
A player could fall into a ravine if they are not careful.
I am also experiencing the other visual glitches where the shield is on the player's shoulder or protruding horizontally from the hip as well as trident and spyglasses not positioned correctly and sleeping position where bottom half of player is not on the bed.
These issues have been happening on my PS4 ever since it changed over to Bedrock and I can confirm that it is still happening today.
I have the Minecraft CD.
I have tried deleting the game and installing fresh and getting all updates.
I have tried deleting the CD version of the game and installed the latest demo from the PS4 instead.
I have tried creating brand new worlds after both scenarios but the same problem persists in every world.
None of these procedures resolved the issue.
As far as I know we have not applied any texture packs to any of these worlds but we are still experiencing the same problems reported on this issue.

I am experiencing this issue as well. Shields on other players appear in the wrong spot, and when they see me, mine is in a slightly different but still incorrect spot.

I have such a bug too. This bug occurred around version 1.16.2. It’s a visual bug, but it degrades the gaming experience. I don’t want to detail the error, several have already described it. I attach some pictures.

Encounter this bug so many times on the PS4 Pro version whether I'm playing solo, split screen, or online. It is the current version, no mods, no resource, texture packs or skin packs. Leaving game and reloading does nothing, changing skins does nothing. Making new shields and getting hit while blocking does nothing to fix it, but the shields still work at least. Sometimes they're phasing through, sometimes are invisible, and sometimes are complete blocking the whole screen so you can't use it.

Can confirm in 1.17.10. Holding a shield as player 2 in PS4 split screen was very peculiar. Not only would it look weird from another perspective, but it would keep randomly switching from being in the bottom left (like normal) to basically covering the right half of my screen with a black box. I kept trying to pinpoint what exactly caused this switch but unfortunately I couldn’t pinpoint it. It would be working, then bug out randomly and cover half the screen, and then randomly go back to working. Again, couldn’t figure what was causing these switches. I am unsure how player 1 is impacted, but this bug is more then just a weird visual bug when it starts obstructing your screen. The whole right half of my screen would basically just randomly become unusable when holding a shield due to this bug. Shields are important, as is being able to actually see where you’re going. This bug should be a pretty high priority.

How is this still unresolved? I see split screen multiplayer ads on television showcasing split screen mode. This is ruining the gaming experience of split screen Minecraft. The recent post by the mod is not accurate. I have the base version of the game on Xbox One, even after reinstalling the game and starting new worlds the glitch exists regardless of packs being added or not. In fact, the problem not only exists on the base version it gets worse when you add a pack. We have 1.17 out and it is still a problem. I'm sure when caves and cliffs is fully released it will still be a problem, what is going on? If it didn't degrade the gaming experience blocking your screen it would not be as big of a deal but it is.

Days ago I had that happen to me with my brother also when we were playing together on his survival world and not only the following items makes it weird how our character holds it but sometimes one of our characters would act like a ragdoll while walking or sprinting as seen on our 3rd person POV. And most importantly we both didn't have our Resources Pack turned on.

Are you sure it’s consistently for just a split second? I ask because I remember prior to 1.17.30 that the duration of the bug would seem to vary. Sometimes it was just a second, but others I’d have to put the shield away because I just couldn’t see.

For me, it always flickers for a single frame in that incorrect position shown in the pictures above when switching to those items. I can even see those items in the wrong position in first person as well. However, for first person, I could not see that incorrectly positioned item previously in 1.17.0 to 1.17.11.

I don't know why my ticket got closed. Ever since the update the Player 2 gets their part of/all of the screen blocked by a grey/black screen!!!!! That is not the same issue as holding the item incorrectly!!!!
@unknown This is the same thing and has always been tracked here! You can look at the comments above and you will see that the screenshots have had this problem before.

This issue may be fixed in 1.17.40 and 1.18.0.21 versions, i made a test with a player connected in my pc and the other connected on my phone, i gave both tridents/shields/crossbows/spyglasses in their hands and off-hands, and at both perspectives they were holding the items correctly in 1.18.0.21 beta.
In 1.17.40, i joined the pixel paradise server and all the players around me was holding their tridents in the correct position, so i guess this issue maybe is finally fixed, but i'm still unsure and i want to know if this is also resolved for someone else.

Gosh, I hope it’s fixed. What about testing split-screen? Has anyone been able to confirm that shields have stopped randomly blocking half the screen? That’s what was really impacting me the most.

I don't know about split-screen, but since the positions are no longer broken, they are probably also fixed, i hope.

I can confirm 1.17.4 did not fix this issue on split screen multiplayer for bedrock. The main issue I face is the use of the Shield. When the Shield is used by the main player, the second player view of it is wrong whether you are in crouching position or not. Moreover, when player 2 uses a shield and looks towards player one it distorts most of the screen. Other issues and items stack on these but other people have described them well. I believe the bow is also affected. Amongst other items.

Thank you Robert, it seems the issue is still present in splitscreen players but at least not anymore at multiplayer ones.
Also, the items affected are Shields, tridents, crossbows and spyglasses, bows are not affected.

I have also noticed this consistently in split screen multiplayer on Nintendo Switch. It only seems to be when player 2 is in player 1's field of view (even if hidden by blocks), and it makes player 2 have the shield sticking out of their head on player 1's screen and player 2 sees a glitched black shield texture covering most of their screen. Only current workarounds are to hide hand or have player 1 not look in the direction of player 2.

This is definitely still an issue on the most recent PS4 version in split screen. I do believe when player 1 faces player 2, player 2’s affected. I was player 2 and it seemed when player 1 looked at me, the shield bugged and covered the right half of my screen. I also experienced this with bows (they were almost sideways like a crossbow), but that didn’t hugely impact vision negatively. I also saw that, for me as player 2, pillagers held their crossbows wrong (almost flat against shoulder, straight up) but player 1 didn’t see that. That’s not too big of an issue though, but I bet it’s related to this so I’ll leave it here anyway.

I have seen the same thing happen with armour stands holding shields that another player placed but the person who placed them sees them properly
