No follow the camera.

Can confirm the issue and the fact that it doesn't follow the camera.
Just tested, I can see that it does look a bit wonky at certain angles, especially if compared to the model shown on the wiki. Not massively out though.

Happens with villagers as well, it appears to look funny because the winding order is wrong so we see the wrong sides of the item. More easily seen when it is holding a block.

Happens with Zombie Villagers too.
