MCPE-20548

When I want to sign in Xbox I click the button and it crashes my whole game

So I have tried deleting the game and reinstalling but nothing works even shutting of my phone so it resets. All I do is get on minecraft click the sign in button for Xbox live and then it crashes

Possible workarounds

A couple of workarounds have been suggested in the comments:

  • Ramona Hopkins comments here that turning off WiFi might solve the problem, and gives helpful information on how to turn it off.

  • Andrew Kasper comments here about how deleting a certain file might solve the problem, if you have that file.

We would appreciate you letting us know if you tried either of these workarounds and whether or not it helped you.

Sign in Xbox live

migrated

Usually crashes multiple times. It seems to be when I sign into my world primarily, but also when I come back into the game from having the app minimized or asleep, which should probably be a separate ticket. The sign-in crash seems to be fixed by turning off multiplayer for my world (too soon to say definitively "fixed"but it's definitely better), so I would look at the code for multiplayer .

Thanks for the help but it didn't work

migrated

I'm on 1.0.4 on an iPhone 7

migrated

Still crashes for v1.0.9!

It is caused by the number of threads the App is creating. The iOS believes the game is putting the device at risk (of system crash) due to the thread explosion and therefore aborts the App before this happens - even without access to the source this can easily be seen in the crash report (64 threads and no doubt counting).

So why does it still work on older devices? Simply put because they are slower! This means that these devices don't saturate the queue(s) not because of good programming but the time slice on the core isn't long enough! However on faster devices, probably iPad Air 2 and newer the queue is overfilled (not a problem in itself) and an attempt is made to service all requests concurrently - BANG you're dead.

I see two possible fixes:

1. Make the queue serial - surely there isn't that much going on at this point?! We're only on the title screen!
2. Monitor the number of tasks being processed and keep this within realistic limits. There isn't much point in attempting to execute more tasks (threads) than cores anyway as you'll soon hit a performance lag due to context switching!

<rant>
I'm really quite miffed that this bug has been around so long. It isn't hard to fix and people that are paying real money every month are unable to login! Personally if it was my game I'd drop everything else and fix it - please show a little respect to your paying Users.

Still knackered with v1.1 release - well played!

I'm guessing that that following devices are crashing when attempting to sign in to Xbox Live:

  • iPad Air 2

  • iPhone 6 & plus

  • iPhone 6s & plus

  • iPhone 7 & plus

  • iPhone SE

  • Current iPad (2017)

  • iPad Mini 4

  • iPad Pro - both models

  • Apple TV

  • No doubt the latest iPod Touches

Fancy fixing it? I doubt it as this is the 6th release that you've kept it in. I mean it isn't as if it is a game crashing bug that prevents you from playing - oh wait it is!

Please, please, please just check how you broke the code around this area with a simple source comparison using your version control system...

migrated

I resolved the issue for myself by restoring my phone to factory defaults and then downloading apps without restoring from iTunes. I have iPhone 6+ with iOS 10.2.1

migrated

Jeremy - can you confirm that you can actually sign-in to Xbox Live on your iPhone 6+ through Minecraft v1.1.1? More overly having signed in are you able to load a realm?

I reinstalled the App several releases back in the hope that this would fix the problem and it did / does allow the game to load again rather than simply showing a white screen and then crashing. However the reason for this is that by reinstalling the game you stop it automatically attempting to sign you into Xbox Live, which is where the game crashes.

I can confirm that the game is then playable outside of realms and therefore Xbox Live login. However I don't believe the crash has been fixed with regards to the actual sign-in with the latest release, v1.1.1.

I haven't restored my device to factory defaults and if this is indeed the fix my time with Minecraft will have run its course - no other App on the device appears to be showing unusual behaviour.

Can an engineer please respond to this thread to given an official update, at least to offer some hope that it is even being looked at?

migrated

Jeremy - just noticed you are using an older version of the OS, v10.2.1. Are you willing to update to the current version v10.3.2 and confirm whether or not it still works?

migrated

No surprise - it's still not working with v1.1.2.

migrated

Two more releases and two more fails. Neither v1.1.3 or v1.1.4 resolved the problem.

I give up - my realms subscription has now been terminated.

At least while I patiently waited there were regular updates from the assigned engineer (who was?). Provided of course you accept linking other bug reports to this one and marking them as resolved an update and not just a method to reduce the system bug count!

I get an xbox sign in crash as well. The only way to play is to either remove the xbox account or disconnect internet. It started happening after I added the account as a child to a family account. I live close to Redmond, WA and would be happy to show you what a pain it is.

migrated

Same as Shawn.. I just edited my sons settings in Xbox live and now it's crashing. I just bought the app so he could play with me on the xbox and if he can't play it this is going to be very upsetting.

migrated

Same as Shaown and Tony Elder. Please fix it. My son can't play, too.

migrated

I have this same exact experience. I made a change to my daughters (child family account) so that she could add friends, when Minecraft PE loads on her iPad Pro (gen 1) and logs into XBOX Live the app crashes back to springboard. If I put the iPad into airplane mode, it prevents signing into XBOX Live. This prevents the app from crashing. Launch the game, enter a local world, turn off airplane mode and the app crashes.

SOLUTION: While in airplane mode, sign out of XBOX Live. Turn off airplane mode and sign back into XBOX Live.

Must be some sort of bug when you make changes to a Childs XBOX Live profile while they are logged into XBOX Live.

migrated

Hi Jason, I wanted to take the time to say THANK YOU SO MUCH - you have just saved me from a nightmare as the same happened to my kids' iPads and I thought we had lost 8 months of Minecraft building.  Can't tell you how grateful I am. :o)

migrated

Reopened as quite few tickets being made about this recently. If you know easy steps on how to (possibly) reproduce this, please leave a comment.

migrated

It happens when the adult do changes in the childs security settings in Xbox Live while the child account is logged into both Xbox Live and Minecraft.

Sadly, for me (but mostly for my son) the above from Jason did not help and now Minecraft is totally unavalible (crashes or freeze)

Got the same problem, also after changing the privacy settings of my child online. My device is an IPad Mini (not sure if 1st or 2nd Gen).  Changing the privacy settings back to previous ones does not fix this issue. Only work around is to disable WLAN/Internet on the device to get it at least working again locally. I hope this gets fixed quickly.

migrated

Hey, I had this problem on my iPad and fixed it. I changed my kid's settings on xbox.com and when we tried to load Minecraft it would crash when signing in. The solution was to first turn off internet access (flight mode easiest, turns off data access too if you have that). Then open Minecraft. Let this run its course, it'll try and fail to sign in. Then go to settings and then profile, where you can sign out of xbox. That'll pop up a secondary window to confirm signing out. On my iPad this can be slow  to happen (taking seconds) so bear with it. Once you are signed out, turn off flight mode and then sign in (from the profile window where you are/were). This process takes you to browser and online to sign in. Sign in with your kid's account, and that will then go back to Minecraft and all should be well!

migrated

I believe that connectivity issues with both the xbox live account and the store are caused in part by their inability to function with IPv6. Chang your wifi network settings to link-local only for IPv6 and see how much better it is! A shame that this is happening in  a game that is owned by the biggest software company!

migrated

I can confirm this is also an issue on an iPad Air 2, the game crashes shortly after launching whilst it is automatically signing into a child's xbox live account.

I suspect many people encounter this issue by 1) setting up an xbox account for their child with the default restrictions of the child account 2) Attempting to add a "friend" and getting a permissions error 3) Proceeding to change the child's account settings on xbox live to make it less restrictive.

Now every time Minecraft is launched it will try to automatically login to the child's xbox live profile and immediately crash.

Please get it assigned and fixed!

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

The following settings appear to work at making online multiplayer possible on a child's account

  1. Login to xbox live (account.xbox.com)

  2. Click your user profile in top right and select [Xbox settings]

  3. Select Privacy & online Safety

  4. Select your child's profile

  5. Select Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety

  6. Ensure the following settings are enabled

You can play with people outside of Xbox Live

You can join multiplayer games

Add Friends

  1. Select Xbox 360 Online Safety

  2. Enable Online Gameplay

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a workaround for an iPad Air 2 4G if Minecraft is crashing after the above steps:

  1. Disable WiFi only (not airplane mode, no SIM inserted)

  2. Settings -> Profile -> Sign Out for Xbox Live -> Sign Out

  3. Enable WiFi

  4. Sign back in with the child's account

Attention, this is the most strange and unresolved bug / glitch because when I play Minecraft and sign in my Xbox Live account on Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 and it will crash Minecraft but when I play Minecraft and sign in to Xbox Live on my iPhone 6 and my Ipad Mini 2 and it doesn't crash the game even though I play with the same connection and the same xbox live account !! please fix this

migrated

On an iPhone 6 running iOS 12.1 with Minecraft 1.9 and the solutions detailed above are not working. Like the others, this issue came up when I updated my daughter's xbox.com privacy settings with her still logged in on the app. Toggling airplane mode lets me get past the splash screens (it dies at the while screen when it can access the internet) but it says "signing in to XboxLive one the left side and then freezes after about 4 seconds and returns to the home screen. In those 4 seconds I'm able to get into settings/profile but none of the options there have any impact on the issue.

migrated

I have this problem on two iPads: iPad Air and iPad (5. generation), each having their own account at Apple as well as at Xbox.

I experienced no problems before I created Xbox Live child accounts and logged in on the iPads. I did exactly as James Bewley describes:

1) setting up an xbox account for their child with the default restrictions of the child account 2) Attempting to add a "friend" and getting a permissions error 3) Proceeding to change the child's account settings on xbox live to make it less restrictive.

Now every time Minecraft is launched i crashes. PLEASE FIX THIS!

Unfortunately the solution James Bewley suggests in his post doesn't help.

migrated

Had the exact same problem! Created a Microsoft account for my daughter. Tried to add myself as her friend, but got the message she wasn't allowed to. Fiddled around on the web (extremely frustrated by the extremely unfriendly flow, but that's not even the point) and succeeded in adding myself as her friend on xbox.com. Returned to Minecraft on the iPad, but it crashed again and again at every launch.

James Bewley's fix didn't work. Turning off WiFi or turning on airplane mode delayed the crash, but it was still inevitable. Signing out off the Microsoft account was not an option in the settings menu. Deleting all account info (on the iPad) did nothing. The game kept crashing.

We were desperate. My daughter has spent countless hours building her world. We thought all was lost.

Luckily someone at the Minecraft IRC suggested we used a 3rd party application to backup her world, then remove the app, reinstall it and then restore the world. I used PhoneView and it worked like a charm!

It's not a fix for the problem at hand, but at least we didn't lose hours and hours of work! I'm at the point where I no longer care about cross-platform multiplayer or a stupid Microsoft account. I'm angry like hell that a major issue like this still hasn't been fixed in two years time!

I have removed an inappropriate comment from view. Please limit comments to providing additional information about the issue, and remember to be respectful as stated in the Issue Guidelines.

Also, the bug tracker's purpose is to collect and organize reports of bugs and forward them to the development team. Once a report has been passed on, our job is done. We don't get progress reports, so we're unable to answer questions about the status of a fix until one is released. Such questions should be directed to the Community Management team.

i found a temporary solution. for those who are still experience this problem use a 3rd party launcher like blocklauncher. i don't know about other devices if this works or not but it definitely works on the mi pad 4. just go play with the dang thing and hope for the best. until the devs found a way to solve this problem, use this.

migrated

This has happened even just loading up the game. But also with Xbox live login as well

migrated

I was able to resolve the issue on my iOS device with the following steps. I have not verified that these steps work on other devices.

  1. On a Mac, download and install iExplorer (or another application that allows you to manage files via a USB connection to your device)

  2. Navigate to the Minecraft folder.

  3. Find the (curiously-named) "XBLStoage.json" file. Make a copy of it and save it to your Mac or PC's desktop or another place where you will be able to replace it (in case this resolution does not work for you)

  4. Delete the "XBLStoage.json" file from your device.

  5. Verify that Minecraft PE now correctly launches as expected on your device.

Presumably, the error is caused by the apparently mis-named "XBLStoage.json"? Presumably, the code is looking for "XBLStorage.json" or something similar?

Curiously, when I performed this action on the device where I had logged in to XBox Live, with the parent account, the issue was also resolved on my child's device (albeit using apparently old XBL credentials?)

Auldrick

@unknown: I'm glad you were able to solve your problem, but before I suggest this as a workaround (at least for iOS users), I'd like to be sure it doesn't solve this problem at the expense of creating other problems. Are you still connecting to Xbox Live in the game? Have you checked that any purchases you've made from the Marketplace are still available to you, and that your minecoin balance is correct? Are you able to join worlds being hosted by your Xbox Live friends, and can they join yours? And do these tests also succeed on your child's account? Any confirmation you can give would be appreciated.

Although the XBLStoage.json file looks like a misspelling, it must be what the code is looking for or deleting it wouldn't have changed anything. Out of curiosity, did the game recreate the file with either of those names? It could be a clue to what's happening.

migrated

I used the same method as Kasper since I has having the same problem, it would crash even before it opened because it was trying to connect to Xbox live, I’m on iOS, I found the XLBStoage.json file, made a copy, deleted the old one, and left the new copied version their instead, restarted Minecraft then everything worked perfect, all realms still active, purchases are all the same, and Xbox live is signed in, everything works just the same

Auldrick

@unknown: Thank you for the feedback!

Could you please clarify something for us? Andrew Kasper said the file name was *XBL*Stoage, but you spelled it *XLB*Stoage; I assume one of those was a typo, but I'm not sure which one. What was the original file name, and what did you name the copy? Also, did restarting the game create a new file with the original name?

migrated

Sorry yes, it was called XBLStoage, and yeah in the files the original is there again, so the game did create a new file with the original name
The copy I made was just called XBLStoage 2, the name was automatically given to it, I didn’t change the name

[Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay)

@unknown - Would you be willing to share a copy of those .JSON files with us to look at and compare? You may create a new Private ticket on here if you like, or you can contact me through a message on the Minecraft Discord or directly there, my username is Mega_Spud#7168.

This started happening on my son's Galaxy tablet tonight after he signed in his new XBox Live account.

If I turn off WIFI, the game will start and shows the "Global Resources Reset" message.

Is there any additional info I can provide to help debug this problem?

Thanks.

Auldrick

I think I heard there's already a fix in the works for the Global Resources Reset bug, but you might want to try Andrew Kasper's workaround, mentioned a few comments above. It sounds just like what he mentioned at the end.

migrated

@Auldrick:

Sorry for the delayed response.

1) I am still connecting to Xbox Live in the game.

2) I had not made any marketplace purchases, and I had no minecoins.

3) I am able to join worlds hosted by my XBL friends, and they can join mine.

4) These tests also succeed on my child's account.

5) Restarting the game and logging in again did correctly re-create the XBLStoage.json file.

While I agree that the code must be checking for the existence of a file with that name, I hypothesize that whatever code handles invalid credentials subsequently attempts to delete or read a file with the "correct" name. Just a WAG though.

migrated

Just posted a debug log file. Check out the very bottom of that file. After that, everything shuts down.

migrated

Also, running on iPad Air 2. iOS is up to date. I logged out from Xbox, deleted the file as suggested, and it was re-created, however, once I signed back in with the Xbox account (despite fixing all permissions as suggested), it crashes.

migrated

Not sure if I have a similar problem as this but whenever I am logged in with xbox my game crashes instantly. It doesn't even reach the main menu. If I clear mcpe data and cache, thru app settings in android, it clears the logged in xbox account and everything is well again. But I can't play realms because I am not logged in. Android 8.1 and MCPE 1.12 and still this. Breaks my heart and my pocket.

migrated

My son is  also experiencing the same problem, since I enabled his xbox account for participation in multiplayer games, and he started the MCPE app once again (where he had already opted to use the Xbox account, but which failed to launch because his permissions weren’t set correctly for multiplayer use. And then, ever since I actually enabled multiplayer in his xbox gamer tag permissions, the app crashes during startup. If I disable data altogether on his iPad, the app opens the game menu while still attempting to log into his xbox account. Timing out after (let’s say) 5-10 seconds, the app stops responding to user input, and then crashes within several seconds later.

What motivated us to try to use xbox account login, was the requirement for this when connecting to a new server to play Skyblock. Worst idea ever, apparently, cuz now he can’t play Skyblock - nor return to his many worlds build during his three years of playtime. This is undoubtedly a disaster to Mojang  and to Microsoft.

migrated

My issue did not stem from having a child on my account or changing anything on my live account. But I resolved my issue of crashing and seeing global resources reset by taking my iOS off WiFi and starting the game. It took a couple tries but I was able to get on long enough to sign out of Xbox live. I quit the game and went back in. I played a little not signed in. Then i signed in. When it logged in everything I have purchased was there and it hasn’t crashed. I also (before I logged out and was crashing) kept seeing that I couldn’t use realms or play with others due to how my Xbox live was set even though I had never changed it and it had never been an issue but when I logged back in that was back to normal and I can play on realms again. So if you have an iOS before deleting any files try to get to your profile (turn off WiFi - airplane mode did not work for me - and log out. Then test a world for a minute and log back in.   Hopefully this works for you and keeps working for me.

migrated

Here in October 2019, I continue to experience exactly the same bug as described in the late 2018 bug reports, and in the detailed steps to reproduce given in the late January 2019 tickets. I changed the settings on an XBox child account to allow them to join multiplayer and minutes later when they attempted to log in the game began to crash on load and has continued to do so. Exactly as described in the ticket. FIX IT PLEASE.

I have not yet attempted to go through the "XBLStoage"  [sic] hack to attempt to fix it, but that's a ridiculous level of fine-grained work to expect your users to do when simply using the parental controls of the XBox login in the most obvious way.

Furthermore, there is no longer a straightforward option to log out of XBox live from Minecraft from an iPad, as far as I  can tell. That's a UX fail that is making this worse than it needs to be, as it circumvents some of the more straightforward workarounds that were apparently options before.

migrated

follow-up: going through that process to delete XBLStoage did work though. Just a big PITA.

migrated

I am having the same issue on my Android phone, the game only worked once but when i closed and then reopened the app it hasn't worked since. If i'm not signed in, it'll work, but the moment i try to sign in it crashes

migrated

I am having the same issue with my kids' Kindle Fire devices. I updated their privacy settings to allow them to play multiplayer games and now the app crashes every time on startup. However, I cannot find this XBLStorage.json file. Where is it? How do I locate it?

migrated

I would also like to add... How can you possibly have failed to fix this issue after all this time? This is a serious user experience defect. It has been years since it was reported. I notice the most recent urgent defects that were fixed included such pressing problems as not being able to place a lantern under the stairs and a player's shadow disappearing when they are crouching and creeping. Surely the total inability to even start up your application after making common and every day updates to security settings merit the same level of attention and urgency as those very important issues?

migrated

New update, and it's still broken for the mi pad 4. guess we'll have to deal with the fact that we don't deserve online play. seriously of all android devices only this one tablet has it. with no alerts saying "minecraft has stopped" it just quits. Please fix this asap. To reproduce this you would have to log in to xbox from a mi pad 4.

migrated

I am having the same issue on my Huawei mate 10 with the latest Minecraft update 1.13.0 the update made it worse it crash's every time and sometimes the game won't start again i have to uninstall and reinstall it.

migrated

Happens for me all the time on both ipads with children accounts.

The only way to play a game is to disable wi-fi, but once it's reenabled - it shortly crashes again.

migrated

OMG TYSM 😉) I HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR 2 MONTHS! IVE BEEN TRYING AND TRYING!! I LOVE YOU! YOUR THE BEST! 😉

migrated

Have the same issue on an iPad Air 2. It was not directly related to parental controls though. I.e. my son played for some longer time already being connected with his child account.

We played together as family and everything was fine. At some point in time Minecraft kept crashing at the splash screen. Reinstalling did fix the crash but it keeps crashing whenever I try to login with XBox account.

Strange thing: The login never asks for username or password. How in the world is this remembered when I delete the App. Is there any way to purge XBox data from the device?

Are there any logfile I could provide you with. If it helps I would have the possibility to connect this to a Mac or eventually even place some debug-enabled IPA on this specific device.
