Potion Arrows No Longer One-Shot Kill Mobs, Destroying Numerous Redstone Farms

This bug focuses on the one-shot kill mechanic, not aim to change arrow projectile behavior.

In the arrow deflection changes introduced in version 26.40.30 (MCPE-239756), tipped arrows that hit a mob are no longer deflected and can be removed. However, this change has had a massive unintended impact on both the redstone and PVP communities.

The redstone community has long relied on a specific property of tipped arrows: if a tipped arrow deals enough damage to kill a mob in one hit, the mob dies and the arrow remains. This mechanic has been widely used for the past 3 to 4 years in various mob farm designs. With this change, the arrow is consumed upon the mob's death. This means thousands of existing efficient redstone machines will break if this reaches the full release:

  • Silverfish/Slime farms will instantly become unusable, potentially causing massive entity buildup that could lag or crash servers.

  • Some Shulker farms will no longer function.

  • The most common Fish farms will break.

This also affects a huge number of high-efficiency mob farms that rely on the area-of-effect damage of tipped arrows. The impact is comparable to removing trident killers from the redstone community. I strongly urge Mojang to carefully reconsider this change.

I recommend rolling back the code to before version 26.40.22/23 to prevent further catastrophic damage to the redstone community before the full release. This is essential to a lot of designs, after all. That said, I do hope Mojang will take the time to figure out a proper code implementation and offer a better solution — one that balances the needs of the redstone community with the upcoming changes to projectile deflection.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Obtain a bow and an Arrow of Harming II.

  2. Find a mob with less than 12 health (e.g., a pig or a small slime).

  3. Shoot the mob with the Arrow of Harming II.

Observed Results:

The tipped arrow disappears after killing the mob. This breaks countless redstone contraptions that depend on the arrow persisting after a one-shot kill.

Expected Results:

The tipped arrow should remain after killing the mob in one shot, preserving the established mechanic that redstone engineers have relied on for years.

This change has a huge impact on a multitude of different mob farms. The arrows are irreplaceable — there is no other mechanic like them in the game. The spear, while being the closest equivalent, is nowhere near a proper substitute for this.

This change also killed the previous feature that allowed for group killing low-health targets, which made all machines based on this feature completely useless. This is unreasonable; it should be reverted to the 26.30 state instead of directly killing this feature.

Trident killers are still a thing and a viable alternative. Also, tipped arrows are easy and inexpensive to craft thanks to the cauldron behavior on MCBE which allows for dispenser as an alternative. The “bug” you describe is actually a fix for an existing bug. Farms shouldn’t rely on obvious bugs, as it is clear that they will be fixed someday. I strongly urge Mojang to keep the fix for this particular bug, as it does not fit the game’s nature for errors to persist after hitting an entity.

This report belongs on the Minecraft Feedback site as it works as intended and does not describe an actual bug.

I strongly support rolling back this unintended change—namely, the issue where arrows disappear after a tipped arrow one-shots a mob.

Over the past 3–4 years, the "arrow retention" mechanic has been a cornerstone of countless redstone mob farms in Bedrock Edition, including silverfish, slime, shulker, and fish farms. In the eyes of technical players, this is not a bug but a core feature that has been long relied upon.

The current change would break devices in thousands of existing saved worlds, inevitably leading to entity pile-ups, server lag, and even crashes—far outweighing the harm of the original deflection issue.

I understand the intention behind the fix, but such collateral damage is unacceptable. The tipped-arrow kill mechanism nicely compensates for the shortcomings of the traditional trident killer, and has been a long-standing feature used by the redstone community for 3–4 years.

I kindly ask Mojang to either roll back this change (revert to before 26.40.22/23). Please listen to the community voices that have invested years of creativity into this mechanic. Thank you for your consideration.

Tipped arrows deal area damage, which has no alternative. Arrow killers have many applications, and in recent years they have received as much attention as trident killers.

This has been a widely known tech among farm designers for 3 to 4 YEARS. We all don't expect arrow killers being fixed as a bug

The potion-arrow execution method is one of only two execution methods in Bedrock Edition that can stably benefit from the player's Looting enchantment with zero resource consumption, while also making up for many shortcomings of the trident execution method. This is crucial for redstone players. Please roll back the potion-arrow mechanics to the version prior to 26.40.30.

If entity farms are going to break so bad, entity spawn limits from Legacy Console need to be added to Bedrock to prevent game crashes…

First, it's not a bug. “This site is not for help, support, or suggestions. ”

Second, actually, I have a best way to maximize efficiency, /gamemode 1.

Anyway, if you want to maximize efficiency of farms with bugs, you must dare to face with bugs being fixed. Your farm is broken? these “farms” should be destroyed.

Removing, or “Fixing” Tipped arrow killer is not an encouragement of creativity, it is a LIMITATION.

Without tipped arrow killer, a player must build very complicated machines to replace the killers in some basic material farms. Wll they use a new design? NO, they will turn back to old, low efficiency farms because the new designs are even worse in cost-effectiveness. The amount of types of farms will decrease, not increase.

It is a step-backward of the era to remove tipped arrow killer.

Thank you for your report!

I hope Minecraft Bedrock Edition can keep this feature. After all, it's been unchanged for so long that players have already built many interesting things around it, and no one even realized it was a "bug." The developers themselves didn't "fix" it for the longest time—so why choose to patch it in the latest version? It's truly baffling.
