"Failed to load character" on Bedrock and Minecraft Earth

Same here on Windows 10, Failed to load character 5.  However all my customized skins won't load.

Same thing happens to me on the new bedrock edition on PlayStation 4

Bedrock edition on Nintendo Switch daily player, the custom characters ie character creator wont load any of my characters with items purchased from the store as well as default pack skins. When logging in/ launching a new game game I always get " failed to load character 1-5" and forced me to re make all my characters each time, very frustrating. Please fix. Bedrock Edition 1.14.1

Just started getting this today, too, on Windows 10, and I don't seem to be able to re-download my purchased skins.

Same on PS4. Won't load any custom of purchased skins. Skins should be local on device and only need connection to either update skin (user option) or download saved skin from previous upload (again, user option). Skins should never be dependant on connectivity. Skins should be physically on the device SDD or HDD and always accessed FIRST by the game, then only updated at User Authorization.

*no custom or purchased skins.. PS4 1.14.1 (TU2. 01).

Same I lost my level 15 and in game purchases on iPhone. I doubt I’ll have any luck but how do file a support ticket? Is there any updates

Same for me on PS4. I swear this update is driving me insane! XD It’s so frustrating too because I’ve spent money on tokens for the skins and when they fail to load, I can’t use them!

Im a player in Minecraft Bedrock (Switch version 1.14.1) and every time i log onto my account, i consistently get errors of both my minecoins refusing to load (shows at 0 every time) and not a single one of my custom characters loading. 1-5 fail to load, and upon reloading, they default to Alex or Steve and i cant change or customize anything about them

Same for me but only character slot 1

I must also add that in addition to Windows 10, the Switch has this issue for me too.

i have tried contacting mojang support but they arent responding. Also it seem that its happening in all platforms.

My characters are not loading what's the problem

This has been happening since they added the skin update for me.... I assumed they new about this and are going to patch it. Im suprised they havent fixed it or reverted it to the working system.

For me I have had this issue with only one character (no.3) I don't know what's wrong with this specific character, either its one of the clothing pieces I'm using or the fact I'm hiding an Afro under A headscarf

Have this issue on ps4.  Spent half an hour creating my daughters custom looking character, then restarted the game it was all lost.  I constantly get notifications at the top of the screen when the game starts that says "Failed to load character X" (roughly like that).

Ran into this issue today, v1.14.30 on Android. It appears to be a problem with loading from the Mojang servers as part of the login process. When you first bring up Minecraft, it logs in to your game console account (Nintendo, Sony etc.) then the Microsoft account, then I am guessing it uses that information to pull your data from Mojang, or perhaps just strait from Microsoft. Anyway, you can see if you watch closely, that the login process is 2 step on Android. On the second step, the download from where ever step, is where the problem occurs. 

Symptoms include:

1) Saved characters failing to load.

2) Cannot access purchased skins/packs.

3) If you go into the store to re download your skins/packs, they do not show up in the preview windows (upper right corner of the skin/pack description window)

4) If you click "Edit Character" followed by either "Owned" or "Purchasable" you get an endless loading bar wavy thing.

5) You can sometimes get the chars to individuallly "reload" on the character select screen, but it seems glitchy. Char 3 would not load no matter what. Selecting a reloaded character would not always show up when you exited out of the selection screen (selecting it) 

6) Deleting all chars to try and rebuild them does NOT work. Things will still be glitchy, but now with your newly built chars!!!

Short solution: I did find that rebooting my phone made things start working again. Just closing Minecraft all the way did NOT help on Android.

I am also having the same issue on my Switch. I also can't access skins I own when I am not connected to the internet.

I can add to the issue, with some potentially helpful observations.

I first experienced this issue on my Toshiba laptop running widows 10 with Intel processor / 4GB RAM. I had two issues with this laptop.

1. The issue of 'Failing to load characters'.  The number and quantity of characters not loaded was not consistent. Sometime only one character would load and occasionally four characters would load. There was no consistency on which characters or how many of the five loaded or did not. Clicking the reload button of the saved editable character did not reload the saved character, but I was able to edit the character, to recreate to the best of my memory, the character as I previously saved them. I bought a skin pack to make it easier to reload my characters. These purchased skins would also not load on startup of Minecraft, but at least I could edit the character appearance to the purchased skins...

2.  The second problem I was having (which is related, bare with me) was that Minecraft would stop responding quite regularly when closing command block programming/editing window. I tried all the usual things, like Application Reset, Un-install Reinstall, I even made a clean install of windows 10. nothing worked. I figured my computer was just not powerful enough to handle Minecraft.

3. I wanted a new laptop anyway, so I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad L340 AMD/Radeon and added maximum RAM. I installed Minecraft on it and it worked like a dream for weeks and weeks. Then after a while I had a few crashes when using the /tp command, and a few crashes when exiting command block edits. Then the 'failed to load character' thing started and now consistently will not load characters, though the characters do reload when clicking the reload button, so its not quite as irritating as my last laptop. 

4. I began to wonder what changed on my new laptop that might have contributed to the problem, and I think that I pinned it down to when I installed 'Minecraft Education Edition'. I have since uninstalled Education Edition and I have not had any command/command block crashes since then (touch wood). The uninstall process of Education edition was a bit hairy, as it never completed the uninstall, the progress bar never reached half way and so (ctrl alt del) to end the process, reboot my laptop. Education edition was gone. However I am still left with characters not loading.... 

Question is, what can the installation of Education Edition change in the existing Standard Bedrock edition that is not undone when you uninstall Education version?

It appears to be a memory or connection issue, as when I encountered this issue, I was able to work around the issue by restarting my device.

Same on PS4 1.14.60.  Like Jonathan Hanzel, a restart seems to have fixed the issue temporarily.

Uninstall and reinstall does not fix it

using a different username does not fix it

Also forgets which character was last used.

Yes bruhh it's true even if your using custom skins it will wait you ages

A me too here, both xbox one and android now showing failed to load characters, purchased map templates are locked again and showing no minecoins.

Are you logged into Minecraft on another device? If so it can be the case that the skin is on the other device.

THIS ISSUE MAKES THE GAME FEEL REALLY CHEAP. ME AND MY WIFE PLAY MC, ME ON XBOX AND HER ON IPAD. THIS BUG SCREWS UP HER SKINS EVERY TIME, IT'S EVEN WORSE NOW WITH THE NETHER UPDATE! Dude brand new iPad Pro, old I phone, install, reinstall. I have done everything except reverse engineer the code and fix it myself. Lol. I have had this issue since last year, tried many things, many many things, spent hours. It doesn’t matter if I make new accounts, delete old files... I even factory reset the iPhone just for giggles.

Also been an issue for me on Xbox One. Sometimes it clears out all of my characters, then other times just the first one.

My character will not load, it says failed to load character 5. Also i tried uninstalling the game but it didnt work.

I think I solved the problem, what I did is I deleted the character and the characters loaded but you’ll have equip your skins again on the characters I came off minecraft and went back on to see if it says characters failed to load but it didn’t say that! My character were still there I didn’t have to delete it again. If this help please let me know 😊

This is an issue on the Ps4 it will not load no matter what I do.

This also happens to me on PS4 only, it seems. I fixed it by re-saving the character on another platform and switching back to PS4. It's only a temporary fix, but I am glad to be able to use achievement-unlocked character pieces, even if it requires me to re-save it every launch.

PS4 digital edition. I’ve had this issue off and in for sometime now, however it appears to have become more prevalent as of late. Version 1.16.1 / 2.10. 

I can never get it to load on win 10 1.16.10

I play on the PS4 and I've had this issue occasionally for the past month or two but I have been unable to load my character at all for the past few days. I've tried reloading the character and the game but nothing seems to work.

This constantly happens on my PS4 version. On Windows I have my personal skin I brought over from Java, so no problem there. This needs serious fixing. Can't access the content I've unlocked either.

I have this problem too in bedrock edition 1.16.50 on an ipad. One of my characters failed to load without me noticing for the longest time. Now only two of my characters will load so I had to recreate my normal character on one of the characters that will load. The reload button doesn't work. Also the all capes I see are rendered on the front of entities. I am also signed in on an android phone so that may be the problem. Please fix this soon as it seems this has been going on for a long time.

I just started having this problem on 1.16.40 . I am leaving feed back on how I resolved it and what caused it. 

This issues started with Minecraft on a Nintendo switch changing the skin to something that was no on my purchased list. When loading on windows 10 computer the profile would never load.

I resolved the issues by changing the skin on the Nintendo switch to something I owned on both devices. This allowed the profile to load and then change on the computer to my desired skin.  The preview function for skins on the console edition caused the problem. I hope this helps others.   

I'm a ps4 player and this happens to me as well, but only if I start Minecraft on Windows 10. Right know, I have the issue with my custom default skin. It won't load on PS4, error "failed to load character", but on Windows 10 it does. The character 5 is loading on PS4, but not on Windows 10. Sometimes all my character are working and sometimes not. This is really annoying.. :/

Just got over the "sign in" crashing when trying to use microsoft details and now I cannot load my characters or my packs.

I found a partial fix. If you click on one of the featured items it will let you edit your skins. But you can't see the edits most of the time. It will show the skin if you have reloaded minecraft alot but its random. don't try to replicate the reloading because I only got it once.

Literally now 3 of my 5 characters wont even work. They are all doing this. 

Still being affected by this. PS4. 14 March 2021. All my kids custom content and purchased content is gone. Come on Microsoft. Stop stealing from kids.

Still causing a problem on MC Bedrock Android June 24 2021, character 1 perpetually fails to load. This has been the case since 1.14, at least respond if not fix this altogether come on Mojang

The bug tracker's purpose is only to help you build a quality bug report and submit it, it's not a tool for keeping the community informed. After inquiring to Mojang about the status of this bug, I was informed that they applied a fix for it in 1.16. That makes sense because as you can see at the top, they applied fixes in two different 1.16 Beta releases. However, we either overlooked or never got notice in a changelog that it was fixed in a 1.16 or 1.17 regular release, so the ticket here has remained open until now.

Since there is a recent report that this issue is still affecting somebody, closing out this bug report might be premature, so I'm not going to do that just yet. First, I need to know whether this is still a widespread problem, because if it is, we need to send it back to the devs for another look. Therefore,

PLEASE COMMENT IF YOU ARE STILL WAITING FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE FIXED.
Also, if you submitted a separate report and were redirected here with the explanation that yours was a duplicate report, please say that and mention your report number if you can. I'm also looking into the possibility that some of the "duplicate" reports were actually reporting a different problem.

• What device are you having the problem on?

• What release are you playing?

• What kind of character isn't loading (Character Creator or Classic skin)

• If it's a Classic skin, where did it come from?
  ⁃ Marketplace skin pack (which one?)
  ⁃ Skin pack from a third party (where from?)
  ⁃ Image file from a web-based skin creation app (which one, if you can remember?)
  ⁃ Image file you built yourself?

Still having issues with character creator not loading characters. Also cannot pick a certain set of eyes.

I'm having this issue with a classic skin character created on PS4 1.17.? (don't have access to my PS right now). The issue occurs when I try to load it in Minecraft for Windows 10 1.17.10, 

edit: The classic skin came with the Minecraft installation on the PS4. It's the tux skin.

Hi @Auldrick , sorry for my misinformed reply to this thread, I sincerely apologize for my tone. I am also sorry for the late reply since I haven't had the time to check this thread since I last replied. In reply to the details you asked from me, here they are:-

1. My device is the OnePlus 8T.

2. I am playing the latest release (1.17.10.04) and the problem still persists.

3. Neither character creator nor classic skin is working, I am simply not able to access the customization menu for Character 1 on my account from any device (I have tried Minecraft Windows 10 version on the same release).

4. It used to be a classic skin from a Minecraft skin pack from the Marketplace but now it shows nothing except the "Reload" button, which consequently does nothing.

Based on the near absence of response to my comment asking for a show of hands, it seems safe to conclude that Mojang has fixed the original bug that affected hundreds of players. That leaves the three of you who have commented that you still have a problem like this after the fix release.

Since there are so few of you, your issues must have a different cause and the history of other people's comments on this report would mostly be irrelevant to your cases. I will therefore be closing this report in a little while, with guidance on how to continue pursuing solutions for you in the rest of this comment.

First let me make it clear that, assuming you're all updated to 1.17, you are now running the same version as millions of people who aren't having the problem any more. It's very unlikely that there's another bug causing the same issue that only affects a handful of people. (It's possible, just very unlikely.) So while you could file a new bug report with your particular details if you want to, most likely nothing will happen for a long time unless more people report the same problem.

For this reason, it's best to approach your problems by initially assuming it's not a bug, because the tools available to help you solve non-bug problems are more interactive and you'll either have a solution quickly, or you won't have wasted much time before having to file a new bug report anyway.

So now let's look at your individual problems and how you might approach finding a non-bug solution.

@unknown and @unknown: Both of you are using the PS4 and having a problem with preloaded content. There's quite a lot of details that are unique to playing MC on the PS4, and it's one of the newer platforms for cross play, so there are still lots of quirks that Mojang is slowly smoothing out. I would recommend asking for help from other PS4 players on the Community Support Discord. If there are workarounds for this problem, they'll know about them, and if not they can help you check some of the other possibilities.

@unknown: In your case, both Character Creator and Classic skins are failing. I'm inclined to think that data corruption is involved, perhaps in a cache on your device, which would probably be easy to fix but this is not the place to get guidance on that. I therefore recommend that you also start by asking for help on the Community Support Discord. I think the solution might be just to reinstall the game, but you can lose your worlds that way so be sure you understand the risks and how to avoid that.

Auldrick, I wanted to note that I have reached out to the community. As far as what version the issue was fixed, I'm not sure. But upon uninstalling Minecraft PS4 edition and reinstalling (and deleting all the files aside from my saved world files), I've discovered that my characters are now properly loading

Hey, I had this problem in 1.17.40. Both devices (iPad Air 2 running iOS 15.1 and Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series running Windows 10) failed to load character 3, so there was unlikely a problem with an individual device. I deleted the other characters (although I don’t think this step is necessary because a new character was created in slot 1 before character 3 was fixed) and focussed on the problematic character. I selected one of the (free) featured items which brought me to the character creation screen of character 3. Is it possible that the fix mentioned did work for the few individuals who were still having problems but something was not properly refreshed, and forcing the character creator to open applied the fix? Or maybe it was corrupted data on the server side that was replaced by the default data (again by forcing the character creator to open)?

Interesting to look in to.
