Player name shows as skin name (Steve, Aria, skinStandardCust, etc)

I have this issue when using a custom skin. It says my name is Steve when I am clearly logged in as ISlimeGuy

An incorrect skin is applied and it also sets the name. In this case "Steve" or "Aria". The player name is changed to this and does not get fixed unless you restart the application. Sometimes that works.

Expected results:

The correct skin should be selected and the correct player name should be shown.

Are you experiencing this with any skin, or only with specific ones? If it's the latter, could you please specify which skins from which packs you have seen this on?

I can only confirm that it has happened with "Steve" and "Aria". One of the Mods in the comments here claim they got it with "Eze".

@unknown: It happens with any skin from any skin pack, either custom written or from the Marketplace, and I can tell you how to reproduce it:

Steps to reproduce:

1. If you don't already have any skin pack installed on your computer, download a free one from the Marketplace. Example: 1st Birthday Skin Pack from Minecraft.

2. Start Minecraft, allowing it to sign in to the Xbox network.

3. Open the Dressing Room and select a character slot.

4. Click Classic Skins from the hamburger menu, select any skin pack, and select any skin from that pack. Note the skin name.

5. Click the Equip button, then return to the main menu.

6. From Start, open the Xbox app.

7. Click your profile button in the upper left corner. From the drop down menu, click Sign Out.

8. Return to Minecraft.

Observed Result:
The selected skin is still active, but the name tag has changed from your Xbox gamertag to the name of the skin in the skin pack.

It should be noted that this is also how the name tag is set for offline play, or during program startup prior to connecting to the Xbox network.

What this seems to show is that something is preventing or interrupting a connection to the Xbox network. It could be a network fault, an Xbox server fault, or who knows what else. But in any case, it's not actually a problem with the skin packs: You can repeat the above steps using a Character Creator character instead of a classic skin and after signing out of Xbox, the name tag will revert to the base character's name. (That's how I got Eze once, and how somebody snapped a screenshot with Aria.)

The connection was apparently lost, but no error message was shown. Perhaps the game recovered the connection after a moment, but if so, it was too late: The game had already reverted the name tag. Perhaps the bug is that the recovery logic after a network error should be resetting the gamertag, but isn't.

I've had that problem for about a month now, I tried loging out and back in, I tried switching skin

No matter what I do, I get named "skinstandardcust", in my solo world, in the commands etc

Add 1.20.15 hotfix. The bug is still present there.

The reproduction steps provided by Auldrick result in the skin name being applied while logged out, which is working as intended.

If you know a reliable method to reproduce this issue while still logged in, could you please provide reproduction steps for it?

Reliable way to replicate this bug:

1.) Have bad/laggy internet (~200ms).

2.) Open Minecraft

i have same problem since 1.20.15 or 1.20.12. I use custom skin pack, sometimes it display skin name in game menu or multiplayers game except Minecraft server. in multiplayers game, the skin name display above player also it display in chat box if the player send meassge

Please add 1.20.41 Hotfix as it's still happening in this version. 

The gamertag is bugged in both the main menu and in local worlds; It appears as "skinStandardCust" after importing a custom skin. It's worth noting that the gamerpic/xbox icon is also missing and defaults to a gray icon instead. Already tried logging out of everything and reinstalling to no avail. My tag obviously isn't "skinStandardCust".

Seems to not be bugged in realms and public servers but it's still annoying.

It is different for me since mine says "Minecraft - Sk" regardless of what skin im wearing

This is still ongoing. It has my name constantly as "Luke Skywalker J", even though I have tried other skins since. My username is Rodj71, but it has not displayed that in a couple of weeks now. I have tried signing out and back in again a few times.

This problem has started to effect me yesterday. At first, it showed my name as "skinStandardCustom" and then a LONG string of letters and numbers. After a reset, it then only showed it as "skinStandardCust". Another thing that happened when this glitch happened to me is that some of my video settings were reset (I usually have my sensitivity on max and have the GUI scale on -1). My 15th anniversary cape also disappeared from my skin selection. According to my friends when connected to a Realm, it did show my Xbox username as intended.

Edit: It wasn't just my video or keyboard settings that were effected, most of the settings that I had changed were also altered.

Edit 2: When I went to look at the "options.txt" file in the "minecraftpe" folder, the "mp_username" slot seems to get replaced with the info that used in the "mp_prev_app_name" slot. I still don't understand why my settings were changed when this glitched effected me.

This problem is also happening to me. I've read through some of the comments, and it's all similar issues to my own.

My gamertag is displayed as "skinStandardCust" in the main menu, when I pause in a world, in chat when I type or get an achievement, and even no matter the skin I change my character to. When I go to the Minecraft settings and look at my account, it still says my normal gamertag (Azlynae), but it doesn't seem to be applied in any other form in-game. I've tried to update the launcher, the game itself, the Xbox app and it still hasn't seemed to work. In the Minecraft Launcher, on the right-hand side from where the green "Play" button is in the center, it says I'm logged in as my regular gamertag, but even if I log back in once I've loaded into the main screen of the game, it still appears as "skinStandardCust" with no resolve. This has been going on for a while now (a couple months) and I don't know how to fix the issue.

 It isn't an important problem, I suppose, but it's rather annoying when it isn't what I expect to see (or would enjoy seeing, rather), and it seems to be happening to a lot of other people, as well. Thank you.

When I open Minecraft I have my charater and I chose a skin from the starwars skin pack. Even though I have choosen the character Cara Dune, my user name, (AlexisWindsong) should be shown above her head. Why does it show the skin pack character name?

I have tried logging out and logging back in. I am not about to delete minecraft and reinstal it. That will not solve the issue cause I have read things on Redit and online that this did not help either. 

Any other suggestions? I'm on Windows PC Bedrock edition. I also have Xbox installed on my computer and I am signed into my account. 

@unknown: In your case, I would suggest looking at your profile settings in your Xbox app. There's a known problem when the Microsoft account you use to sign in to the Xbox network is different from the one you use to sign in to the Store, and the Xbox app detects this and helps you resolve it. This method solved the problem for me, and your setup sounds very similar to mine.

 Something else you might try is reviewing your Xbox Privacy and Online Safety settings. I'm not aware of any specific setting that can contribute to this problem, but that doesn't mean there isn't one, and doing this solved another problem I had with the game (namely, the inability to use screenshots).
 

The name "Custom" is also possible if you were ever able to equip the dummy as a classic skin. Do note, that you need to reproduce MCPE-184470 for a chance for that name to ever appear instead of your player name or gamertag.

I'm getting the same problem when I'm logging into my world quickly. The only way I could prevent this from happening is waiting on the start screen until my account profile show up. Since I can't wait for that long everytime, I added the same  username I have on my account on Minecraft (When you are not signed in yet, you can put your own temporary username on "Account" at settings, above the "Sign in for Free!" button or edit mp_username in options.txt at minecraftpe on com.mojang). You'll also see that "skinStandardCust" placed on username but I never seen one were it is "Custom"

I'm experiencing this issue on my Android and Windows devices, I'm not sure for the other devices

You will see Mickey Mo  "ミッキー マ" instead of skinStandardCust

Been having this issue too. It started with only loading my username sometimes and waiting in the menu long enough would do the trick eventually. But now it seems permanently stuck at the skin name. Have not found a workaround that fixes it yet. Account settings, waiting in the main menu, nothing helped.
