Minecraft crashing after changing skin

For those having this issue, could you please tell us:

• Which device you are using

• When this started happening and which game versions this affects (eg 1.8.0.11)

• Which skins you are trying to upload/use (you can attach an example)

Am using a samsung galaxy j3 prime.
It started at the first 1.8 beta and still affects me to this day and I added the skin I am currently trying to use.

I changed my skin after the 1.7 update and my game crashed right away this is still happening. It has been about three week and I am honestly disappointed with the fact that you haven’t gotten this fixed. I do understand that it takes time but it should not take this long. I play on an apple iPad mini 4 if that helps I did the same skin on my phone and it crashed and wouldn’t allow me on the app. I deleted the skin from camera roll and it did nothing, I deleted the app off my phone and reinstalled it and was able to get back on. The reason I didn’t delete Minecraft off my iPad is because I have spent money on worlds and I am not signed into Xbox. And I am not loosing that money so please fix this ASAP. Thank you.

I am also having this issue. I play on an iPad Mini 4. When I tried using a new skin it refused to display it and kept it as the skin I already had. I restarted Minecraft and it now crashes each time I try to go to the change skin interface. If it helps, I renamed my skin from a png to jpeg, but later converted it again through GIMP because the file was not actually registered as a jpeg and had remained as a png. Maybe that's why it's crashing?

I had switched my skin to jpeg png and it still didn't work, but thanks for the tip.

I am experiencing the exact same thing abby is, i even filed a report on it already, i havent been able to get in for three days now so i cant imagine three weeks. I am using an ipad mini 2, so something leads me to suspect it might be these ipad mini models

This issue should be fixed in 1.8, which is currently still in beta. We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix is included in a non-beta release.

I am having the same issue after attempting to change my skin. I'm playing on an iPhone 6S and using whatever the current Minecraft version is right now.

Is there any estimation on when this issue will be fixed? I’m sorry for rushing everyone a bit, but this issue has been ongoing and has prevented us users who suffer from it from playing the game at all. I am unable to delete my game as it holds lots of valuable data. I use an iPad Air 2, and this bug occurred when I was trying to change my skin in the menu, and has upsetted me dearly. Please, fix this soon. I don’t think I can wait for the 1.8 release, as it’s far down the road and being unable to access the game past the startup screen without it crashing really stresses me.

Also, this issue occurred on version 1.7, I’m sure that’s been mentioned already but the more awareness, the better.

I think the problem is because of certain skin websites or apps, such as Minecraft skin studio for IOS.  When I selected Choose from Camera Roll and chose the skin that I changed to right before the game started crashing it didn’t load properly, thats probably why the game is crashing. The main problem is that we can’t get into the menu to change the skin. I know you guys work hard on this game, but this is a serious error that should be addressed soon. I added some screenshots of Minecraft Skin studio and the actual skin that I used, I hope this helps.

Oh, and I’m playing on an iPad 5, the version without cellular data. Minecraft  version is 1.7.1, I think. Either that or 1.7.0. This started yesterday because that’s when I changed to the attached skin.

Playing on a ipad5 version 1.7 iOS 12.1. My son changed his skin and now it will not boot up past the Minecraft screen it just kicks him out.

Playing on an IPhone XS iOS 12.1 I changed my skin to a shiba inu on MSS and it didn’t change so I restarted my phone and I couldn’t open it, I don’t wanna delete it because I spent money on maps!

I have experienced this twice. Once on my friends iPhone, but she deleted her app and installed it again, but I don’t want to because I used money on the shop, and my data. I’ve played Minecraft for 5 years and don’t want to loose the creations I made, also I’m on an iPad Pro IOS 12.1 Minecraft version 1.7 

I found a fix! It’s not in game and only works for apple iphones and iPads etc, but its free! Download iexplorer, when opening it, select demo instead of paying and plug in a device to your Mac (I don’t know if windows version works) and go to Files, Apps, Minecraft, games, com.mojang,minecraftpe, and look for the your custom.png skin and delete it! It should work instantly. If not, I’m sorry but Ive posted what I found and worked for myself. Look above to see what I said and learn about the problem. Good Luck!

I have a Moto Z2 Play and the only way to fix this problem on my phone is to uninstall the game and then reinstall it. I have researched and tested everything, there is no other solution to this problem on the Moto z series. 

It appears this issue is caused by MCPE-37926, which has already been linked as related. Once MCPE-37926 is fixed, this will also be fixed

There seems to be two separate issues here. The first one is that if you try to change from custom to custom you need to restart the game to apply the change. The other is that if you try to apply a new custom skin after being a skin from a skin pack the game crashes. This results in fresh installs of the game having no way to use custom skins as you need to upload a skin from being a pack skin the first time you use a custom skin. Not sure what caused the setting reset.

No, when I crashed, it was because I changed from a custom skin to an older custom skin that didn’t get applied correctly in game.

I haven’t been able to play for over a month now because of this bug, after changing skins, Minecraft crashed and then I couldn’t reach the menu screen anymore. It would only go past mojang, then say Minecraft and then crash. Pls fix this and keep all our data because I don’t want to loose my worlds that I spent 5 years working on.

Got a new iPad (New Apple iPad A10 Fusion Chip 128GB). Transferred our accounts and everything to the new iPad. When my son tries to pick a new skin (either from the main menu or while within a world), the app simply exits.

Version is 1.7.0, iOS.

He can play fine otherwise, but cannot choose a skin.

Quinn, there is also a third problem. Once changing skins, the game doesn’t let you play anymore. Just keeps crashing. Not sure if u meant this but this might be a third problem. Doesn’t even allow you to go to menu and I’m scared. 

How long will this bug take to be fixed? It’s been over a month of me freaking out and having restless sleep, I really don’t want to loose my creations and memories on the game, I’m super nervous and I really can’t imagine what I would do if I lost my data. Please fix this I’m really scared.

We're still actively working on the problem, but some users have had some success by carrying out a complete reinstall of the game and then not downloading any custom skins that might be causing the issue.

Here are the steps needed to carry out a clean installation of the game. Please only do so if you feel able to delete files on your device. You will need access to some sort of file explorer in order to back up your world saves and to delete the game files before reinstalling the game and replacing your world saves.

Backup any data you don't want to lose, then try the following:

1. Backup your MinecraftWorlds folder to a separate folder or drive of your choice (if you want to save your worlds) (Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds)

2. Uninstall Minecraft

3. Delete the com.mojang folder (Device storage > games > com.mojang)

4. Reinstall Minecraft

5. Run Minecraft and if it works restore your minecraftWorlds folder

Sometimes a clean install of the game will help with these kind of issues.

When is 1.8 released. My bday party needs Minecraft. Hope it’s before dec 15.

Unfortunately I'm not so savvy that I can back up files and such from an iPad.  So I guess my child is screwed.  Either reinstall and lose all her worlds or she can't play at all.    We did delete the skin packs but that didn't solve the problem.  It still opens then glitches and closes again.

The custom skin issue might be related to a cheat people used to use to stop them taking damage. I know that loophole was closed recently plus I think the one where they could use a skin from the game and play as a mob. You're sure they're not trying to load any of those skins / mods? If so I would just tell them just deserves 😉

2 weeks in a realm getting maxed armour and stuff to come out to some cheat hat kills you with op witch abilities gained by cheating?  Crashing is too good for them! I see many people using custom skins ok so migght be an idea to verify its a bug by downloading a skin crafting app, making a skin and seeing if you have an issue with it. In my expeeience, kids tend to know they're doing something dodgy (or not) and try to get 'parent' (substitute mommy or daddy) to get it going for them once they are shut down. Not making any accusations here but am suggesting you all look a bit deeper as those kind of expectations could be an issue as people get older.

Resolved in 1.9.0.3 beta.

After experimenting I found some unusual pattern.

The issue was REALLY fixed in the 1.8.0.14 beta, but for some reason the fix was not included in the final 1.8 release and possibly was pushed back to 1.9, if this is not included in the 1.9 official release but included in the 1.9 betas, we will have to wait for another fix update.

So yesterday I updated my game and it opened!!! I was so relieved so when I went into game I immediately changed my skin to a Minecraft skin from the shop and every time I leave it resets to Steve? I’m ok with this but I think this is progress... at least I have all my worlds and data so yay! But this is sorta an update

This is also happening with me on an iPhone 6 running iOS 12.1.2 on MCPE 1.8.1

Same issue on iPhone 8plus with ios 12.1.2 and 1.8.1. Crashes at launch. The skin was generated by MC Skin Factory app. 

This issue should be fixed in 1.9 when it comes out.

I hope everyone is glad to know that the issue is fixed in 1.9, existing skins might need to be removed from the game via a file manager before the fix will work, but newly applied skins are not showing this issue

This issue is still happening for me on Minecraft Windows 10 Edition on version 1.9.15.0. When I select a custom skin to be loaded, the game freezes for few seconds then crashes.

Yes that is Happend to me too on my Windows 10 on Minecraft Bedrock edition Im was set my own Custom skin but the game was Crash, Im was give Vote for this Bug Im have the same Problem.

it also happen to me with Windows 10 minecraft. I tried to reinstall - but it didn't help.

One confirmed workaround for the issue is to apply the skin using a skin .mcpack rather than applying it directly. A tutorial about creating a .mcpack with the skin can be found here.

In the meantime crashes such as these are logged automatically, and will be fixed in due course. For any affected players, please let us know the platform you are seeing the crash on, and if possible include a copy of the skin that is causing the issue.

I have the same problem that started 2 February and persists to this day, so 5 months persist, I play on Windows 10 and as with other people also after the change of skin freezes and crashes, I tried to upload the skin several times but because of this error it is not possible. here's my skin, and please fix this bug it takes a long time.

Windows 10 beta 1.12.0.10, the problem still occurs. After selecting a file the game freezes for like half a second and closes right after.

Yep, it's pretty sad, i uploaded a video like 2 months ago to this thread, i don't know if someone watched it, but i have that problem since 1.8 or 1.9, i don't remember at all. For some reason this doesn't happen to me in android but only in windows 10 edition (but apparently the problem also happens in android for some players)

Also, i did what Mega_Spud said and it worked, it's a temporal solution to this problem. Thanks Mega_Spud.

I didn't understood too much about that article in the wiki (mostly because english is not my main language) so i watched this video and it's pretty easy to do a skin pack using another skin pack and just changing its files:

in resume: Just download a skin pack, put your skin in the folder, delete a random skin from the skin pack (which you are going to replace), go to the file "skins.json" and open it with notepad, search the skin that you deleted, change "localization_name" and "texture" to the name of your skin and save it. And then just move the skin pack folder to com.mojang/skin_packs

I know this bug is very outdated, but i am encountering it whenever i switch to the classic skins tab. This may be because i imported an external skin pack that gave me capes (not like capes for character creator, it’s just capes for my skin pack) into the persona folder. i have completely deleted and installed a new empty persona folder, but my game still crashes every time. Does anyone have suggestions? i’m going to reinstall the pack to persona, maybe if i’m lucky that will work.

I don’t have the steps to reproduce, but i can try to find the tutorial i used and link that. I can change my character creator skin but i can’t get in to the classic skin tab. it lets me in on switch and ios, but not windows 11.
