Minecraft on iOS started freezing and crashing

This issue seems to only be happening on IOS devices. I've not seen any cases of it happening on android just yet

Any news of the eta for resolution?

Also, if you delete the XBLStoage.json file, you can sometimes get in. This makes me think this bug might involve Xbox Live

This problem also affecting my son and I as described in the issue above. Crashing started to prevent gameplay at approximately 8:00 PM New York time on Jan 17.

Every time I log on to my Minecraft account on iOS it keeps logging me out. I was wondering if this is a common glitch that we could resolve in a few hours.

It all started yesterday (January 17).
The game freezes on the last image and you need to restart the app.
I have not added mods, servers, skins: I am playing the pure game and I have a single world. I haven't even made recent updates to iOS. My iPhone is a 6S with iOS 12.4.

yesterday I timed how long I was able to play the game before it would freeze or crash. the time was 1 minute 15 seconds. today it won’t even load.

I purchased this game last night and attempted to play for an hour. Of the hour, I only had about 5 minutes of game time due to glitches and unable to get past the loading screen. If I was able to, it froze setting up my account or 30 seconds into game play. I’ve powered off my phone to see if that would help and it has not. I tried again this morning and I cannot get past loading screen.

Same here.  If I delete and reinstall clean it will load, but as soon as I sign in to Microsoft account it freezes.  After that the game won’t load and gets stuck on startup.

Lost an HOUR so far trying to fix this for upset 10 yr old.

Same thing, tried delete Minecraft, chose to lose worlds since this is my 3rd freeze out since the first with the 1.11 update for Villagers &Pillagers update. Did the work around that got most of us in that time and that was doing the download off wifi using data,  this time with this bug it doesn’t work.  I was able to download, upload, and got into Minecraft to log into Microsoft and then change character skin back and the clicked on to enter my realm .. then it finally froze.  After trying it again and also with wifi back on ... nothing ... all it does is freeze in upload.  So this bug got worst there is no work around solution... we are in the hand of waiting for hopefully this time a permanent fix. and soon!

David that’s EXACTLY what happened to me! I deleted Minecraft too and lost my world that have been working on for 4 months just to try to fix it and it still does not work

Oh yes, I am ios also, the first time it occurred after time it started to effect some android users so i wouldn’t same android is completely clear but have a better chance than ios users. This is more serious than the first time it started with the 1.11 update.  It needs a permanent fix.  I pay for a realm and don’t enjoy that it sits unusable.

This bug makes nooooo senseeee. What changed yesterday?? If it was an online change, why does this problem still occur OFFLINE??— ? AND WHY DOES EVERYONE ON PS4 AND iOS have it but no one else??? I personally started having this problem only occasionally on my iPad at like 4 PM, then it was more often at like 6 PM, then I can’t get past the loading screen at 10 PM. Still doesn’t work this morning. ;(

Same issue, reloading app no change.  All the iPad pros, same problem. Started 1-17-2020, still today, all three IPad pro’s still not today 1-18-2020 cannot play at all. 

There are 80 people here with the same issue and 200 people in another bug with the similar issue that’s without the people that don’t know about this website for once Minecraft fix your game and now!

I am also having this problem. Since yesterday Minecraft on iPad Pro freezes either on opening the app, or about 10 seconds into gameplay. 

There is a workaround on iOS. Delete the options file (after duplicating, so when services come back online, you just restore it) in Minecraft>games>com.mojang>minecraftpe folder. It will reset all options, including the XBox Live login, then the game will start up logged out and will be working fine.

Maybe you only need to edit a line in there but I couldn’t figure out which.

Having same problem on iOS. Started yesterday. Marketplace purchases no longer show up. Lost all my worlds. Won’t go past login screen most of the time. Just freezes up. Very frustrating!!

Same problem iPhone 8 iOS, issue is when minecraft connects to access Microsoft account whole game freezes regardless of which screen I access it from, game works fine when not on WiFi but won’t access realm or multiplayer

I am on Iphone iOS as are my kids. It crashes when using WIFI ... but works fine when using Cellular Data.

This is happening for me on all iOS devices connected to WiFi. If I switch my iphone 8 to cellular, then I can get it to load fine. Hotspot doesn't seem to work for the other devices. Nintendo Switch works fine.

Works fine on my XBox but not on any IOS devices on WiFi I have.

This issue is related to how Xbox live is communicating with IOS devices.  Minecraft works fine on IOS when not signed into Xbox live. My older son, who is playing bedrock version (same as version on IOS device)- but on a windows computer, is able to load, sign into Xbox live, and play servers with no issues.  

Did Mojang issue a hotfix to IOS in the last 24 hours that is causing issues between IOS Xbox live accounts?

So it’s been down for over 12hrs without any notice publicly to the user community. It’s not a great experience so far, how long will we be without this service we are paying a subscription for?

Hi I play on bedrock on iOS and yesterday the game started freezing I restarted the app and my phone still nothing and now it won’t even let me in the game it freezes right before it loads please help I’m really irritated

Everyone: PLEASE DON’T DELETE MINECRAFT AND LOSE ALL YOUR WORLDS.

please be patient and wait until mojang fixes everything. If you HAVE to delete all the worlds, PLEASE back them up. This can be done by going into the ‘files’ app and going to ‘on my ipad’ and then ‘minecraft’. Then go to ‘games’ and ‘com.mojang’. Press down onto the ‘minecraftWorlds’ folder, and then choose to move it. Move it somewhere safe, like pages. When Minecraft has been reistalled, replace the new minecraftWorlds file with the old one with your worlds on it. This means you still have your old worlds.

Mod violine- what was posted on Twitter has nothing to do with this issue.  Twitter support was referring to purchased content.  

Ok. Mojang is aware of this issue as well though, so it is taken care of from Mojang's side as well. Perhaps the Xbox servers being down was not the only issue.

Re purchased content: Some users reported that marketplace content was affected as well, so I assumed the two issues were related.

I see bellow that the Xbox live issue should be resolved but it doesn’t yet work for me. I still have the same issue as everyone else.

I had the same problem as everyone else here with crushing whole time and no starting, but now with the new version from for 5 minutes I was able to start minecraft and everything worked, but when I signed in into xbox live the whole crushing and not starting started again.

Not fixed for me. Got into the game and it froze up about 3 minutes into the game.

There was an outage earlier today on XBOX live (https://beta.support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status) which maybe was causing this issue.  I see multiple tickets today with this same problem.

I found a way to get back into the game on my iPad Pro, which I hope helps others.  It involves deleting a couple of files on the iPad with the help of iTunes:

1) For good measure, make sure Minecraft is not running in the background (close it completely).

2) Connect the iPad to your Computer and open it on iTunes (small device icon close to the top left)

3) Go to File Sharing.  Find Minecraft.

4) Just to be cautious, select all folders and files ("games", "internal", "prodConfig.ppcrl", and "XBLStoage.json"), then scroll down and click on SAVE. This will allow you to make a backup copy on your computer. the "games" folde has your worlds and the "internal" folder has skins and packs.

5) Now select ONLY the files called "prodConfig.ppcrl" and "XBLStoage.json", click your DELETE key and delete them.  (Don't worry–the app will regenerate these files later and you backed them up just in case.)

*Note: previous threads already shared the solution of deleting "XBLStoage.json".  This worked for me in the past when I had made an update to my child's Microsoft account.  Today, however, this alone did not work.  I had to also delete "prodConfig.ppcrl" and follow the next step.*

6) Next, go to SETTINGS on the iPad and turn on Airplane mode.
*Note: There are open related bugs (such as MCPE-33316) where iPads freeze on startup if Wifi/Cell is off.  For me today, deleting "prodConfig.ppcrl"helped me circumvent this problem.*

7) Now open the Minecraft app.  Hit ok (to ignore) any iPad messages about turning on Wifi.  It should load and no longer be signed into Microsoft.  It will give some error warnings about resources failing to load profiles but you can ignore them.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOG INTO YOUR MICROSOFT ACCOUNT JUST YET.  It will freeze and you will need to restart the entire process above.  Even though the XBox Live Outage has been reported as resolved, my iPad game is freezing if I try to log back in.  Perhaps something else must be fixed on XBOX or Mojang's side for the logins to work again.  Xbox status can be found here: https://beta.support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status.

8) You can turn off Airplane mode on the iPad if you like.

You should now be able to play the game locally (not logged into Microsoft).  If you have not disconnected the iPad from iTunes you will see that the "prodConfig.ppcrl" are automatically recreated once the game loads.  The file "XBLStoage.json" will automatically be created once you attempt to log back into Microsoft.

I hope this helps others!  If anyone finds out more please share.

Work-around in their twitter feed doesn’t work for me. I didn’t have the Xboxlive app, so I downloaded it to try it, it being 1. Force close Minecraft, 2. Sign out of Xbox live, 3 sign in to Xbox live, 4 start Minecraft. Didn’t work. I always signed into Xbox live via Minecraft menu, but because it freezes before that appears, there is no way to sign out as far as Minecraft is concerned.

It seems like twitter is exploding with outrage, as thousands people are being affected by this bug. I started to log in at 3:30 PST time on 1/17. It let me in and I was playing for a while, but about every 5 minutes it started to crash. So I waited quite a while and then later it would load but it would freeze after 5 seconds of getting off the mojang screen. I have deleted the app, restarted the ipad, deleted videos to make room for storage and was generally pretty annoyed at the whole situation. Fortunately Mojang has taken note of this and is currently (hopefully) fixing it.

I’m on IOS version 13.3 . Have the same problem. It seems like the game freezes after a certain amount of time or something. I hope this bug gets fixed soon. 

Two iPads and a iPhone with the same issue here. Cannot logout of account without opening the Minecraft app and ours does not open at all.

Workaround does not work for me. Am playing on ipad2. Still fails at loading screen. Has been out now for~24 hours. 

I'm having this exact issue as is my son. I've found that I can connect occasionally when using cellular service, but the app freezes within minutes regardless of mode of play. I've uninstalled the app and recreated some local worlds and everything works fine until I attempt to log into Xbox Live at which point it immediately freezes and subsequent attempts to open the app freeze as well. I'm on an iPhone X with iOS 13.3 and my son is on an iPad Air with the same iOS.

@Violine1101. I have no XBox app on my iPad.  How do I log out then??????  It is an iPad Pro 2019 with latest iOS and Buzzy Bee’s updates for MC.

Installed the Xbox live app. Followed the directions. Still freezes after logging in which then causes the next startup to freeze on load.
Also tried triggering the launch of Minecraft from there Xbox live app. It does start the application, but I'd not logged in and only gets as far as having launched it myself. Nothing works with that route either.

I found it, its just called XBox.  And it wanted me to buy Minecraft for $29.99 when I’ve already payed for it.  It’d be nice if the two groups got their act together and fixed this instead of pointing fingers and putting out premature announcements.

The solution by FR got me into the Minecraft app again! I’m logged out of XBox Live! At least I can play some local Minecraft while we wait for the servers to be fixed. Thank you FR

It’s nice to have an offline work around but it’s still ridiculous that this has take over 24 hours and we still don’t have any resolution.

I’m having the same issue The device I’m using is a iPhone 6s

I’ve noticed a (possibly related) problem with the last few versions, including this one. I am using iPad OS 13.3 on an ipad7. Seems to be a memory leak type of thing. Crashes started a lot more around MC v1.13, with 1.14.1 not starting at all, which we are aware. 
Anytime I quit Minecraft, I have to completely quit it (not suspended in the background) in order to start again without crashing. However, if I completely quit MC and do a soft reset on my iPad (power and home buttons held through a restart and back to a full shutdown), then reboot the iPad and double click on home, Minecraft shows to still be running in the background - even though I completely quit it before doing a reset.

now when opening the game instead of it freezing and never moving from the welcome page it closes itself down. 

I can log in to Xbox live, but when I start play on my server Realms I can play only 2/3 minutes and then MC crash.

The workaround you reported doesn't fix anything.

I have two iPads. On the one where the problem started happening there was no Xbox app. On another iPad I didn't have neither Minecraft nor Xbox app. I installed Minecraft first to try to repeat the problem from another iPad. As soon as I installed the app and signed in with the account I use on another iPad, the app froze. Force-restarting the app didn't fix a thing. I installed Xbox app then, and it asked me to sign in - I signed in, signed out, tried Minecraft, nothing changed. Even with Xbox app signed out, Minecraft still signs in using the info it stored. I don't see how two apps could share the same sign-in info anyway...

Seems likely that a change happened with XBox auth not with Minecraft itself as the problem is recent but the patch came out a month ago

This previous post copied below worked for me to get it working in offline mode at least. You use the Files App on iOS to access the folder and file “Options” mentioned in the post.

None of the work around seem to work for me or the where and how to’s do isn’t specific enough for me to find on my ipad pro 12”.  Sorry some of us with some things just need as one player put it ...he would get out his crayons and draw a picture... please draw the picture, would appreciate... unless it just isn’t workable.

Thanks to everyone for trying to come with our own solutions to get us back in, it sad the original work around of doing off wifi didn’t work for the 4th time.  I have had the issue with the 1.11 update for the Villagers and Pillagers update.  Hasn’t been fun but the off wifi workaround worked all of those.  Hopefully since xbox they are fixing it.  I was on xbox two days ago to change my online viewing status to view as offline... after I went into Minecraft and it immediately started when i tapped on Minecraft to open it would immediately close, i had to keep trying to open for it to finally open with a global resource failed to open correctly, but when in I was only in for 15 min and was then froze.  Started over, got in after the global notification again, and again after like 15 minutes it froze.  After that, it just froze trying to load up and has stayed that way since other when I did the off wifi workaround and yes chose to lose the 2 worlds i had created since my 1.11 freeze ... but i have a realm and pretty well live there, the one safe bet I would lose my work, and the saving world on ios is a pain.  When i did the off wifi download, upload I got into Minecraft, changed my character back to my custom skin and then proceeded to go to open my realm, and that’s when it kicked me out and went back to the freeze state again on the upload page. But it got me in momentarily.  So then knew problem was worst than or different than the initial 1.11 crash/freeze.  Just don’t get the extreme difference between us ios users vs android, and why not everyone on ios... i am sure I have friends who are ios and are playing.  So did those of us who are froze out all go into xbox live to do something that day like I did?  That might be helpful information.

Thank you mojang for fixing the problem for a few of us. I am one of those lucky few. I deleted and installed the app like 3 times and nothing worked so I waited overnight and now it works! One more problem though.......my worlds and addons are gone. The worlds I paid for came back but my edits were erased.

All seems fixed. It's a shame that many of us lost our worlds in an uninstall and reinstall. Guess some rebuilding will have to be done, just like when a creeper blows up your house. Thanks for fixing Mojang 🙂

LAN play has been working for me since this morning but I just discovered WAN isn’t. Under the Servers tab Featured Servers says Coming Soon.

I can’t connect to my server running on Linux from WAN. I could before all this started on Friday.

Still not working for me or my grandson, using ios 13.3

I have copied my files in iCloud before delete my Minecraft pe in my iPad. And I reinstalled Minecraft without old files, now it’s working for build new game. I wish I could add my old worlds back! 

@Jeanliang - make sure Minecraft is not running (maybe restart your iPad), then using the Files app, copy the folder back to the iPad. This is what I did to backup and restore the worlds my son has created.

Hi @Jeanliang, if you are uncertain and don’t want to safe your worlds to file again, if it was to happen again, if you can make a copy of your world then you would always have it saved, not sure if that can be done.  When I saved my worlds from the 1st freeze back during the 1.11 Villagers and Pillagers update, i saved my worlds and never did reinstall, i have a sentimental world i don’t want to lose and do have a copy, i have never reinstalled... at this point I have decided my worlds are only for a occasional place to play and my realm is where i will build because it is saved by Minecraft and hopefully will never lose.  I had built a 3D world and I lost that one when deleting another world and am so mad i accidentally deleted it, had the full size ender dragon already built, 2 ghost, a couple of the cats, wolf, spider, drowned, Alex and Steve, golem, creeper and zombie all finished ... now that was a huge loss.  But I want to build again, and this time will do in my realm... 

So, you don’t have to until you are sure and that can be after the next update or now, just always be prepared to lose it or save it.

Also, I think it has something to do with multiplayer, as blocking it in xbox settings stops the crashing, but it cannot be allowed or it will crash on loading or splash screen.

Just a suggestion to try... have you gone into your Microsoft/Xbox account, and go through your privacy settings, there is one setting there about multiplayer where a lot of players have it blocked for privacy and it shouldn’t be, it is what allows you to join multiplayer servers and probably the realm as well as speak to other players when in those servers.  

‘If you are doing the old freeze out when trying to load the update, you can load the update on wifi, but before installing on your device turn off your wifi, tether or another device where your using data to upload the update.

i have the same problem when im on Wifi i cant play in my xbox account or even play with my daughter through wifi. It keeps freezing and doesnt sign in. When i use my phone data it works the xbox account but that way i cant play wifi multiplayer

I don’t get what’s going on? Do you mean it freezes? Because you had to wait.

Edit: Minecraft uses its file to work, not coding in Apple’s(iOS) xCode. Well sometimes when I’m trying to put something in the file, Minecraft file is loading so long.. So that might be the file. :/ But this is affecting only my worlds.

The reasons why this is happening, I’m a iOS user and I might know what’s trying affect us with this bug.

• Files failed to load.

• Minecraft has a error then it begins to freeze.

• Minecraft is slow,

• Too much storage stored ( Addons, Catched Data, Worlds, Servers, etc)
