Wow, I just tried the same and it actually works. Although I do like fancy graphics, this should be a good fix at least for the meantime- thank you for directing me to this! Hopefully there is a way the bug can be fully remedied in the future.
I Believe that they were heading for the Bell during their "meeting up" time.
My issue wasnt the redstone popping off it was that the bottom piston was being powered in some locations and in other locations it wasnt.
Cured zombie villagers now trade in 1.0.4.1
Ok to test i made a flat world with a zombie spawner. I would capture and filter the zombie villagers. Once cured no trading. This is in 1.0.4
1.0.4 spawned, cured in 1.0.4. I have a captured zombie spawner that i used to harvest zombie villagers and cure them.
My zombie villagers where natually spawned. Then healed. No trading with the new villager.
I have also encountered this bug. Spawned villagers with egg trade. Healed zombie villagers do not trade. They produce no trade button.
Appears to be fixxed in 17.0.2. I had to reload a backup of my world for it to work. Backup opened with out the checker board biomes.
Confirmed on tab pro.
new chunks visited after 0.17 do not seem affected. just chunks generated before 0.17. Or so i have found.
Also confirmed in direct sunlight. Spawners remain active.
I did eventually find one desert well with biome set to 1. I changed all the terrain settings (depth noise, etc.) to generate the flattest terrain.
I can't find any structures with the biome size set lower than the default.

There were no villagers nearby.
I had some zombies walking up stairs,then they fell into dirt and wouldn't die
