Some slots in the top right of the survival inventory cannot be used

Mod Notice

Try to disable the Xbox Game Bar in order to fix this issue. You can toggle the Xbox Game Bar overlay by pressing Windows+G.

The bug

Some slots in the top right of the inventory cannot be accessed in the survival inventory. Players have reported that upon hovering over these slots, the game starts lagging, and they can only access the items in these slots by opening a chest.

Original description

In your inventory, the right side of the inventory, beneath the green book, causes the slots around it to be inaccessible. You can only move and place items in there if you open a chest while doing so. The bug ended after a short while, and I have no idea how it was undone, but it usually happens right when you load a world. Couldn't find any information or other reports, so I don't know if this is common, or I didn't look hard enough.

Multiple other users have reported the same (or a similar problem). I'll update this ticket to include what they reported here, so we can merge all the different tickets into this one.

To everyone who is experiencing this bug: Do you use any overlays (such as the Discord overlay, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, or Overwolf)? If so, does disabling those overlays solve the issue for you?

Tanis Kint

No, I don't use any overlays.

Michael Bourdet

On another computer I use NVIDIA GeForce Experience, but did not notice the issue.  The mounting issue can be resolved by hovering over the item and typing a number to mount it in a slot. using 1.14.3. Started noticing this on 1.14.

Shyam Shah

I am having the same problem where I cannot select the items in the 3 slots in the top right corner of my inventory. I can only access them when using a chest. It will some times show the item name but it is quite random. I tried restarting the game but this does not help. I also don't use any overlays. This only started in 1.14.3, before it worked fine for me.

kenneth

I have been having this same issue.  I've noticed that it is only in effect when I have the crafting recipes open, if I close the recipes the inventory slots become available again.  I don't use any mods or overlays.

So I did some more experimenting with this and I've noticed that it has nothing to do with the inventory slots, chests, or the recipe book.  It's actually a dead spot for the mouse cursor on the screen.  The reason closing the recipe book or opening a chest "fixes" the problem is because it centers the inventory menu on your screen and moves the slots away from the cursor deadspot.  This deadspot also exists on the in game menu, it's just not noticeable because the clickable buttons on the menu are so large.

kenneth

I figured it out.  It's the stupid Xbox Game Bar for windows 10.  When you start a game it flashes a useless tip towards the top right of your screen, this is what becomes the cursor dead spot.  You can fix it by opening the Xbox Game Bar in your start menu, click on the gear icon for settings, and un-check the box for "show tips when I start a game".

Ethan Prosen

I am having the same basic issue. It is the last 4 slots of the top row of my inventory.

I am playing version 1.14.3 on a desktop with no overlays at all.

It appears that it only happens when crafting recipes are open. However, unlike Kenneth above, it can't be the Xbox Game Bar as I have never opened or logged into the xbox game bar.

Sam

Yeah it's definitely the dang Xbox Game Bar. It happened to me in Starbound as well.

Edit: The notifications also show up on pretty much any unrecognized program it thinks is a "game."

Amanda Lyons

I am also having issues with my inventory. The 2 right most columns in my inventory will freeze occasionally, By freeze, I cannot highlight the item, no labels appear if my cursor is hovered over the items, cannot click on the items. I tried to save and quit, returned and it continued this problem. Once I opened a double chest I could hover over my inventory in those columns and select items. I could then close the chest and open my inventory and it will work as normal.
Having a difficult time reproducing the issue, seem rather sporadic. I will keep testing and see if I can add further details

We need a way to turn off the opening message. I am also experiencing this problem on my Realm in survival mode & on a pc...no xbox ever used w/MC.

Is this fixed in Windows 10 v1903? They changed the Gamebar layout in this version (or 1809).

JoLyn Wahrenbrock

I have this same issue playing on a survival server. It started with just 2 slots but now it is 4. I'm using Windows 10 Java.

Esther Levine

Actually I restarted my computer for a different problem I was having and that fixed it. Now I only get it on a specific part of the screen I use for just enough items mod.

JoLyn Wahrenbrock

Fixed. I disabled the Xbox game bar and the problem is gone.

This has nothing to do with the XBox Game Bar overlay for me. It's happening in PopOS! Linux as well as Windows 10. Switching out of GUI Scale 4 or closing the recipe book moves this "no go zone" out of the inventory window for me.

This still doesn't seem to be related to what you all are describing here which is why I reported it as a new issue MC-166200, but oh well.

Jeff Jenkins

Windows+G only solves problem temporarily.  Issue returns within minutes.  I reboot my pc daily so that isn't an issue.  Only work around I have is to store useless items like seeds in top four spots on right and live with less storage.

Avram Calin

I have the same problem and found out a fix. Fill all of your inventory with whatever and leave that slot as it is.
Mine something else to fill that slot up then reload the game or click the windows button then go back to the game. It worked for me on Java edition.

Philip James Legare-Stokes

I have this same problem. The 4 inventory slots in the top row, from the right are un-responsive when clicked or hovered over with the mouse.. but will fill with dropped items as normal. This has been going on for a few weeks now for me. Opening a chest's inventory seems to solve the symptoms of the bug, but as soon as I leave the chest alone the bug is back.. I am stuck keeping a chest in my hotbar to plop down every time I need to access those slots in my inventory.

It's actually a dead spot just on the screen in general... I noticed on the main menu, if you drag you cursor along the extreme right side of the Single Player button and move up/down, you will notice a delayed highlighting of buttons.

Upon entering my world, I ran into this frustrating issue, and discovered it only affects my inventory when the crafting book is open, which shifts some inventory spaces into the dead spot.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen. After posting this I went back to my game, but the menu delay was gone. Guess I should be glad?

I hope this helps.

This issue seems to only happen to users on Windows 10.

silas tallio

This issue does happen in java. I'm here because it happened to me on java

I have been having this problem for the last three snap shots, (up to 20w15a) and have figured out the cause. (at least for me.)

[media]

It is this box.. or a variation of it. It is a Windows notification that is generated by Xbox Game Bar. When it's active, it generates an unresponsive zone on the screen exactly where that box is. I generated this one by using the screen capture shortcut for Xbox Game Bar, (win+alt+print screen) then exiting the game.

[media]

Here is an image of the notification screen overlaid transparently on top or a screenshot with or the inventory open. As you can see, the box covers most of the top right inventory box and part of the next box over.

[media]

Here it is in the options screen; here it can be seen covering part of the two middle right buttons.

in both of the above situation, the problem can be observed.

To recreate the problem, simply start the game, and press win+alt+printscreen, then go to the inventory and try to interact with the affected slots. (if you click the lower portion of the slot, where the notification box does not affect it, you will not notice the problem.) Upon exiting the game, or alt+tabbing out, you will see the notification for a few seconds, then it will disappear. Upon returning to the game, the problem will be gone.

I have not been able to determine if it happens with all notifications, or just those generated by Xbox Game Bar.

Stephanie Sayer

I'll state again as I did when my issue (MCC166200) was, I believe and still stand by, incorrectly merged with this one as the same issue. IT IS NOT! The one I reported happens in the Java release under Linux (2 different distros and WMs) and Windows 10. Ergo it CAN NOT BE THE XBOX GAME BAR! The behavior as I originally reported is quite different. There are at least two entirely different bugs being bunched together here which will likely end up with one, the other or both being unresolved. I see others reporting the Java issue here too and I just hope they brace for disappointment.

Henry Reimer

The issue also happens for me.

I found that if you close the crafting book the problem stops.

Is this the case for you?

Stephanie Sayer

That's what I reported in my issue (MCC166200) which they have closed and merged with this, imho, unrelated issue, so it's unlikely to be fixed until someone at Mojang actually reads these comments and sees that their helpers are not helping.

To summarize, this one (MCC143776) is a Windows 10 issue. My issue (MCC166200) is a java issue on all platforms issue with much different behaviour, i.e. only a large portion of 1 slot in upper right is affected and goes away when recipe book is closed presumably because the slot is then moved to a different region of the screen..

violine1101

@unknown, please create a new ticket exclusively about the linux issue. And include as much information as possible, i.e. what desktop environment you're using, if you're using any overlays, etc.

Stephanie Sayer

It is not exclusively a Linux issue. As I originally reported in MCC166200 this affects Linux and Windows so I included all the detail you've requested in that bug and further added two other distributions I have tested it on as well. The region that is affected is entirely different than this bug as noted there. There is no Windows Game Bar in Linux either so it can not be involved. Simply re-open the other ticket... it's got all it needs.

Max Romanauskas

The stupid game bar solved it for me but the fact that this has been a problem for so long is extremely frustrating. Still having the same issue on 1.16.

Can Confirm On 1.18.1

[Mod] Jingy

I could not reproduce being totally unable to access slots in the top right of my inventory or a chest UI simply with the game bar enabled, but could reproduce the issue when following the same steps provided in a previous comment by taking a screenshot with game bar. The notification did block me from using the slots (however, I did not experience any FPS loss).

I will be adding 24w46a as an affected version.
