Solution (1.11.x and 1.12.x)
This is the solution which should work for 1.11.x and 1.12.x. This may also work for other versions. For a general way to solve this, see "Solution (general)".
Delete the following files and try to start Minecraft again.
.minecraft\objects\bd\bdf48ef6b5d0d23bbb02e17d04865216179f510a
.minecraft\objects\92\92750c5f93c312ba9ab413d546f32190c56d6f1f
Solution (general)
To solve this problem you have to do the following:
Open the index file in the
.minecraft\assets\indexes
folder of the version which you are trying to play. The file is a normal text file and can be opened with for example Notepad++. The file has probably a name like1.11.json
(for 1.11)Search for the two file names listed above
For each file name do the following:
Remember the
hash
valueOpen the
.minecraft\assets\objects
folderOpen the folder whose name is the first two letters of the
hash
valueDelete the file with the
hash
value as name
Try to start Minecraft again

I had to litterally go into my Minecraft File and take out my saves. After I did that I backed out of the Minecraft file and deleted. I didn't delete the launcher, instead, I opened the launcher and allowed it to create a new minecraft folder. I took the old minecraft folder out of the recycling bin and put it on my desktop. I then deleted the new saves folder from the new minecraft folder and placed the old saves folder inside of it. The first time I tried to open the launcher it froze too, but I just backed out and tried it agian and it worked. It works now, but I can no longer use the old versions. I have my save worlds, though, so I guess that is alright. I really did like 1.8 and 1.10, though, so that sucks.
Is this still a issue in the latest version of the game(currently 1.13.1)?
If so, please add it to the affected versions, thanks!

This issue popped up for me just yesterday, interestingly it's occurring on both my WinXP desktop and on a Fedora/Gnome desktop. Quite reproduceable, as in the game never starts. However, the launcher continued to work fine at another location on a Mac and a PC. May get around to trying more thorough testing today, e.g. remove .minecraft folder and re-install.
