Clarification note
This report is the parent for all reports about confusion between activator and powered rails.

Behavior | Ejects players, activates TNT minecarts, ... | Makes minecarts faster |
The problem is that activator rails in the menu look just like powered rails, and are easily confused.
What I expected to happen was...:
I built a rail system with powered rails and normal rails, which should have transported the minecart in an infinite loop.
What actually happened was...:
the minecart only traveled as far as I pushed it, and the powered rails did nothing to accelerate it. also when placing a stationary minecart on a powered rail and activating it, it starts to shake as if it had been hit. (does not break from this) also if I sit in the minecart on top of a powered rail and activate it, I am ejected from the minecart.
This happened because I confused activator rails in the menu for powered rails.
Steps to Reproduce:
when selecting items in the creative menu, read the labels. the two are very similar in appearance. This isn't so much an issue in survival, because you will make the item you were looking for, and not a different one.
Works fine when I try it, generating a new world in 1.8.4.
The behavior you describe sounds like you're somehow using activator rails rather than powered rails.
