Steps to Reproduce (touch controls):
Tap and hold on any inventory hotbar slot with an item
While holding on the hotbar slot, hold anywhere on the screen as well, and then release the hotbar slot and keep your other finger on the screen
While still holding on the screen, walk towards the dropped item and pick it up
Observed Results:
The item is dropped again. This keeps happening until you stop holding on the screen
Expected Results:
The item should stay in the hotbar because the hotbar slot is not being held on anymore.
Sometimes for no reason things pop out of your hotbar and drop to the ground. I've had it happen to me, but I don't know of a way to reproduce it at will.
original report:

I think what he is saying is that sometimes for no reason things pop out of your hot bar and drop to the ground. I've had it happen to me, but I don't know of a way to reproduce it at will

I have had that happen quite a few times so frustrating

Reopened per users' comments.

MCPE-15674 is a related issue as their not using Minecraft Windows 10 Edition and GUI is different.

Confirmed for 0.15.1

This has happened to me once in 0.15.2. The green bar in the first slot of the hotbar started to rise up all of the sudden as if I were pressing the slot with my finger, and then the item was thrown out.

I have this issue as well(0.15.2). For me it is when I exit a chest (or a crafting table).
The item I am holding will start to get a green bar and be thrown away. It is like I am using/hitting with the item at the same time as I am throwing it away(It has happened that I have destroyed things with an axe for instance). If I press another item the problem is resolved. So every time I exit a chest I always look if there is green on the item I am holding and then I press another Item.

I can describe it.
Sometimes when I go to get the item, or something else (random), the item will start to throw.
Then I must collect it and sometimes, on older updates, it will do this again.
That is all I know.
Confirmed (if I can) on 0.15.4

Confirmed for 0.15.6

Steps to reproduce: Tap first or second slot (I haven't been able to get it to work with the third slot) and slide it all the way to the backwards button. With any luck it should keep spitting out the item until you tap another slot in the hotbar

We are having this problem in 0.15.4 on two platforms - Android 6.0.1 on Galaxy Note 5 and IOS 8.1 on Pad Mini. My son (ipad mini) has this happen when all his slots are full - his pickaxe or tool is "thrown" without any green "drop item" bar or delay - he picks it up and it throws it out again, over and over. My husband (Android) has the same thing happen less frequently, including when slots are not all full. I have not experienced it on my Iphone or my Ipad (yet) - we are all on 0.15.4.
I found two videos on youtube of people demonstrating the problem - one in 0.15.4 and one in 0.15.6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63fu2_Os1Pg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asH4B9CW8L8 (skip ahead to 1:30)

I still have it on 0.15.8

I can reproduce this bug.
1.Create flat world,set to creative
2.Put many entities like chicken (which more lag if too many) (make sure you make cage or fence around to avoid entities walk away.)
3.spawn entities until the game start lag.
4.Make sure the game had massive lag.
5.one finger hold walking forward and another finger change item in hand.
(Just tap on hotbar, the item will throw and you pick the item again. If you luck, the item on iventory will colour green and throwing self.)
Just try on Low-End device,if you lucky.

Confirmed on Nexus 5 Android 6.0.1
Beta Text Line1: v0.15.90 alpha build 1 GuiScale-5
Beta Text Line2: LGE Nexus 5, Adreno (TM) 330, Android 6.0.1

Please reply and update affected versions if you're still able to reproduce this issue.

Reopening based on MCPE-18368 and MCPE-18369.

Confirmed on HTC One M8, v0.16.1 (android 6.0.1)
In my case this is reproducable by..
1. Place an item on the first slot in hotbar eg sword.
2. hold down right thumb on screen (like "using" a tool or when steering while walking)
3. Tap the first slot in hotbar, length of tap required varies and may alternate between long and short, until the slotbar starts filling with green charge status.
4. release left thumb
Result:
when the slot fills the sword is ejected,
Further if the sword is retrieved the slot will continue to fill and will repeatedly eject the item until any slot in the hotbar is tapped again.
Notes:
I'm unable to reproduce on any other slot in the hotbar but the first.
Initially I thought this was due to an android gesture for hold/tap but it only seems to happen on the first slot which suggests there is some possibly intended use for the gesture in the code applicable to the first slot only.
Can you recommend any UI/Touch settings to work around this?
Note: I tried this with three finger gestures disabled in android settings, behavour was still evident.

It just happened to me on 0.17.2. No problem on build 1. Just got a diamond and had a full inventory. Dropped a wooden hoe and it repeated. This was on a survival world.

This has been a re-occurring issue for me as well - over the last few updates.
1st Gen iPad Mini
iOS 9.3.5
Minecraft PE v0.16.2
Survival Mode

Confirmed on 0.16.0 and 0.16.1.
PLS FIX!

Still happens multiple times after multiple restarts. 0.16.2. Only happens to one PC out of the two. Really frustrating for a 4 year old, surely this is not the hardest thing in the world to fix?
This is the Windows 10 version, both running Pro x64. Problem is on a Surface Pro, so maybe touch input related?

I have had this happen to me a few times, I think it happens when there's a bit of moisture on the very edge of the touchscreen, and then seems to register as a hold on the second slot. I doubt that it's mcpe related.

This is still happening to me IOS 10+ version of iPad 1.0 version MCPE, very annoying. Happened once or twice in older version of MCPE but now more often.

Agreed 1.0 is much worse. Was playing with my three kids on a local multiplayer yesterday and all four of us were experiencing it.

I've had this annoying problem for a long time.......I did a report that INCLUDED how to replicate it but was just issued as a duplicate. Anyway, I find it happening to me when I try to take out an item from the first two slots while turning. Very strange.

I want to confirm this is still happening on version 1.0.2 on both my galaxy s5 and ipad. I play survival a lot and mine near bedrock. I have lost multpile enchanted pickaxes because the game just tosses them into the lava. Usually it's no big deal but if they go into lava, they are lost forever. I thought for the longest time it was just me until I found out from my kids that it happens to them too. This has been a bug for me for quite some time and would love to see it fixed in a future update.

Affects 1.0.5.0

Fixed in 1.0.5.3

Still occurs in IOS

Concur. Please re-open this issue. I've been meaning to come back and mention it but forgot until I got @StevenBritton's notification.
Post 1.1 I've experienced this bug again using a bluetooth controller.

On current version (1.5) I experience this issue randomly and often on iOS when using a Bluetooth joystick. Joystick diagnostics confirm the joystick is not sending the drop command. This is definitely not fully resolved.
Yesterday the action persisted even after the joystick was turned off. I've never had this happen without a joystick.

It happend to me lately, I kept throwing away scaffholding, even though I wasn't holding on the item slot, but after selecting another slot it stopped and I could pick up the scaffholding again without throwing it away. (Platform: Android, Version: 1.14.30)

Happened to me today, using an xbox one controller wirelessly. Restarting the game fixed the issue, but it started again after half an hour.
Android, 1.14.60

Happened today. Minecraft PE on iPad. My sword in slot one was dropping over and over. Slot 7 was selected, containing sand. I had been placing sand. But the auto drop started while I was walking. Here is video of the bug in action: [link Item Dropping Feature|https://youtu.be/SNRNeos9E-o].

Still affects Bedrock 1.14.60 on Android 8.1 LG Q6.
This has got to be one of the most annoying bugs. I use touch screen. When this happens, if I pick it up again, the UI will try to drop it again. I need to quickly select something in the hotbar to prevent the animation for selecting and throwing completes or it will keep dropping. This happens a LOT, especially when running across water during a battle. I am wearing depth strider III boots. But it can happen on ground too.

Happened today, just installed on iPad two days ago or so. Just threw away random items from the hotbar until it was empty.

Omg the same thing happened to me!!!! Like the same thing from the vid. But now it’s April and idk what to do!!! What did u do to fix it?

This happend yo me yesterday except it drop all the items in my hotbar, some of my stuff despawned...

Happening in android.

Affects 1.17.41
And also in windows edition, switching hotbar slot and using it right away is sometimes ignored.
For example, in situation that you are trying to switch hotbar slot to water bucket on 2nd slot and use it right away, you'll notice that water bucket pretends to be used but is not actually used. I guess this is related.

Still happening in 2021 in iOS. Clearly, losing hard earned items is of little import. It happens to me quite frequently. Usually I catch it as or shortly after it happens, but today I did not, and lost a netherite sword with rare enchantments. Given the fact that I’ve also had several tagged mobs despawn over the last few weeks, I am beginning to wonder why I even play at all if everything I work to collect just disappears. What’s worse is having to explain to my 7 yo why the stuff he works hard to collect and make with me just disappear.

1.18.12, yes.

It Still Happens In 1.19.2

Can confirm this affects 1.19.2 on iPad Pro iOS 15 and it's very annoying and I've lost several valuable items this way. I work around it with cheats but of course that means no achievements and a degraded experience. The worst is when you find the item and pick it up only for it to be thrown again into an even worse spot. It's like it's missing the `release` event.
