Enchantment table only shows 1, 2, or 0 enchantment options for fishing rods

This report has been set to "Plausible" while we await more information.

We need to understand how to reproduce the issue, or at least narrow down how one could reproduce the issue. I've not been able to reproduce this myself after some less than comprehensive testing but it would appear to only affect a specific set of events.

When you come across this issue are you using a fishing rod you crafted manually or one that was obtained another way? Does enchanting never work on an affected rod or does something like restarting the game or dropping it and picking it back up make it possible?

can confirm on windows 10 in 1.16.0.60

put a fishing rod in an enchantment table with no book shelves. You will not get the option to enchant it.

Put a fishing rod in an enchantment table with some book shelves. You will get the option to enchant it.

For those affected, could you please specify whether your observations are from creative or survival gameplay? Also, whether this is a new bug in the 1.16 betas?

Affects both creative and survival.

Still an issue in the latest 1.17 version and beta versions. Keep in mind this only happens when there is no bookshelf around the enchanting table!

Based on MC-30730 this issue seems to be working as intended.
