MCPE-17233

Map Room Achievement not working using Map with Compass

When creating maps I usually create them with the marker/indicator, i.e. 8 Paper + 1 Compass, but when I used 9 such maps and traversed my local neighborhood I didn't get the "Map Room" achievement.

This bug is not related to MCPE-10840, as other achievements keeps coming in, and a few hours later I retried using maps without the marker/indicator, and then I got the achievement. (It could be related to MCPE-14993, which then has been erroneous closed as a duplicate.)

However, there is a possibility that the bug is not related to the map, but whether the maps are rotated after placing in the item frame square. The reasoning behind this latter version, is that I first placed them with North up on the wall (which means I've got to rotate all map pieces once), and then I didn't get the achievement within a few minutes.

Then I tried with North to the left, and within seconds I got the achievement.

In other words, not receiving the "Map Room" achievement, could either be related to using maps with indicators, or rotating after placing in the item frame square.

Note regarding map rotation

In releases prior to 1.2.15, a bug caused the sky to rotate from north to south and the sun to rise in the north. This tricked many players into believing that north was actually east and west was north, so they rotated their mounted maps to the right to put "north" (actually west) at the top, which prevented some people from earning the achievement.

In recent releases, this tends not to be an issue. The sky rotates correctly and consistently with maps being placed with north at the top, so players generally have no reason to rotate the latter. Mentions of compass directions in this description and older comments below might be misleading, however, so be careful to consider when they were written and whether the author gives any hint of how they determined directions.

Some suggestions for those experiencing this issue

There aren't many reports of this bug, so it seems possible that lots of players are successfully getting the Map Room achievement. It's even possible that this bug has already been fixed, and you're not getting the achievement for a different reason. Depending on how you attempted it, making your maps may have taken a lot of time and effort, and trying to fill in missed spots even more. Maybe you became frustrated, bored, and convinced that there was a bug in the achievement. So you came here and found this report, and now you have an explanation that satisfies you.

But you might be cheating yourself. You might still be missing a pixel somewhere that's blocking you, and you don't know how to find it. If you stopped trying because of this report, when in reality there's no bug or you're missing a pixel, you'll be waiting forever. That would be a pity, so I wanted to suggest some things you might want to try before deciding this bug is causing your problem.

For completeness, first I'll describe the requirements to get this achievement. You need to place 9 maps in item frames arranged in a 3 x 3 square. The maps must have the same zoom level, must be complete (no missing pixels), must map adjacent parts of the world, and must be arranged in the order they appear in the world. I'm not sure they have to be mounted with north at the top, but that's how they're oriented upon mounting and there's no reason to rotate them, so don't.

It's easy to verify that you've fulfilled most of those requirements, but the completeness requirement is harder. If a map is missing a pixel, that pixel is transparent, so what you see there is the background behind it. For a map you're holding in your hand, the background is the map paper. For a mounted map, the background is the item frame: the birch-colored frame if it's near the edge, or the leather if it's interior. To detect a missing pixel, you need to recognize that its apparent color is one of these instead of the color of the terrain at that point in the world.

The problem is that the map paper color and the birch frame color are fairly similar to the terrain color for sand and sandstone. (Also, the leather color is similar to mesa terrain colors, although holding it in your hand should reveal this because the map paper color is contrasting.) So it's quite common to miss mapping a pixel in a desert, a beach, or for sand beside a river or pool, and it's hard to detect it. I miss them all the time myself.

If you're not sure whether a pixel is missing, there are a couple ways to test it. You can try to visually compare its color with a blank map or empty item frame, because the latter colors don't typically match precisely the colors drawn on a map. A better way would to make a copy of the map and mount one in an item frame. You can then compare it with the handheld copy looking for corresponding pixels with different colors (map paper and birch wood have different colors).

Tip: Use Level 0/4 maps to earn the Map Room achievement. Higher level maps scale larger features down to single pixels and hide small features entirely, so their images tend to be more pixelated. This makes it harder to notice when a pixel is missing, because there's more contrast between adjacent pixels generally. It also takes a lot more effort to make high-level maps, so by the time you're trying to put them together on a wall, you're psychologically more disposed to decide that colors that don't quite look right are good enough, so you overlook missing pixels. I spent a lot of time trying to earn the Map Room achievement using level 3/4 maps. When I finally decided to try it with level 0/4 maps, I earned it in a few minutes.

Cannot reproduce, as I've gotten the achievement already. It should be easy to reproduce though with a fresh user, and if not please ask for clarification on procedure.

Can this issue be reproduced in the latest version? If so, please respond.

Hello, I am having the same issue in Windows 10 Edition (version 1.0.2). I am using nine maps created with the compass on adjacent 3x3 item frames, but I cannot get the achievement even when rotating each map. The maps are also of my local neighborhood and zoom level 0 (not zoomed out at all). I am continuing to get other achievements. If you would like me to open a new issue I have a screenshot I can attach.

migrated

I can reproduce this issue in Windows 10 Edition (1.0.4) for both me and my daughter. I used both maps with indicators and maps without indicators, 1:1. Neither case allowed me to get this achievement. Is there any known work around for this?

migrated

Is this still open? I can reproduce it if need be I have the requirement met but haven't gotten the achievement on MCPE version1.1.4.51.

This happens in 1.2.3 on Xbox. Placing the maps in item frames and rotating them will not unlock the achievement. Placing them in item frames without having to rotate them will unlock the achievement. I used locator maps.

Confirmed bug still exists in 1.9.0 beta on Xbox, using 1:1 locator maps achievement didn't unlock initially, was able to unlock the achievement by playing around with the rotation of the maps in the wall so that west faced up, achievement popped about a minute later.

All indicator maps, all zoom level 3/4, all placed without rotating; no progress indicator on achievement and no achievement when 9 maps completed. Changing orientation/rotating had no effect. (xbox one)

Console: Nintendo Switch
v1.11.4 (Bedrock Edition, I believe)
1:1 (Level 0/4) Locator Maps
Seed 1: 190800072 (Outpost Ahead)
Seed 2: -1813740965 (Coastal Village)

I tried to get this achievement several times and here's how I finally got it to work on "Seed 2":

  • Face North towards a wall

  • Place all item frames in a 3x3 square

  • Place all fully explored maps, North-up (no rotation, green indicator should be facing down--the direction the map is facing)

Methods that failed to trigger the achievement:

  • Facing East while placing on the wall

  • Facing South while placing on the wall

    • Attempting all rotation combinations while facing South

As I now have the achievement, I was unable to test other methods. Hopefully this helps narrow things down.

Please note
When adding information about maps, please be sure to mention whether the map was filled prior to June 2017. Maps filled prior to that date were rotated 90 degrees relative to maps filled later. When you tell us you rotated or mounted a map a certain way without saying which era it's from, the possible combinations multiply and it becomes impossible to deduce anything useful from that information.

Console: Xbox One
v1.11.4 (Bedrock Edition, build 2242719 branch 11 no experimental features enabled)
1:1 (Level 0/4) Locator Maps made in 2019, the same day this was posted
Seed 1: 1057731141 (near a village)
Seed 2: -654561791 (forest thing i believe)
I also tried to get this achievement several times and here's how I finally got it to work on seed 2:

  • Face North towards a wall (like the Nintendo Switch post)

  • Place all item frames in a 3x3 square (of course)

  • Place all fully done maps, however they were facing when I put them down (I didn't rotate them) (the indicator faces down)

  • Note: In seed 2, north is straight on a block. so if you wanted to go straight to North, you'd be able to only switch 1 (x, y) coordinate rather than 2 due to North being on a block. For example, If you were to have a compass out in seed 2, and run straight North, skipping one block would look like (1, 1) then next block (1, 2) then (1, 3) and so on and so forth. On the other seed, It would have to change somewhat like this: (1, 1) then (1, 2) then (2, 2). And, note, this isn't a perfectly diagonal line to North either and looks more like a y = 3/4x line than a  y=x line if that makes more sense. Because of that, I cannot place a 3x3 on the first seed if facing North and therefore (I guess) cant do this achievement on seed 1.

Maybe forcing all North's to be "y = 0" / on block will fix this annoying issue.

Auldrick

@unknown: You're saying that maps you made of the Seed 1 world were drawn such that the north-south axis isn't parallel to the left and right edges of the map? I'm pretty sure that's impossible, and it's so counterintuitive that I would think you would have reported it as its own issue rather than blithely mention it as part of an achievement bug. So I'm thinking I must be misunderstanding you, but I don't know what else describing it as a y = 3/4x line could mean.

Update: Rereading your comment, you mentioned using a Compass to move northward. That could explain why you think North is along a y = 3/4x axis. I think you have a misconception: Compasses in Minecraft don't point to the North, they point to the World Spawn point. Thus, they would point ESE (the y = 3/4x direction) when you are west and a little north of world spawn.

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Firmware: 8.1.0
Version: 1.12.0
Issue: As you can see by my latest Twitter post (my username is @Griffintendo), I do not have a single missed pixel on any of my nine maps. I have tried everything to get this achievement to unlock, and I mean EVERYTHING!

  • Using locator maps

  • Using regular maps

  • Facing north when placing the maps (recommended by other users)

  • Facing west, east, or south when placing the maps

  • Leaving all maps facing up (recommended by other users)

  • Making all maps face left, right, or down

  • Quadruple-checking each and every sand-colored pixel
The only thing I haven't tried is using a different scale for the maps, and I'm not insane enough to attempt the achievement with level 4 maps. Other users have said that it works with level 0 maps anyway.
    What am I doing wrong!?

Auldrick

@unknown: Are you signed in to Xbox Live using your Microsoft account? Achievements are associated with your Xbox gamertag, so you must be on your Xbox Live account to get them. I know the Switch can play online using either XBL or Nintendo Online, and that there are multiple accounts involved, which confuses a lot of people (especially me, since I don't have a Switch).

Dear [MCPE Mod] Auldrick,
I have quintuple-checked that I am signed in to BOTH my Nintendo Account and my Microsoft account. I swear this achievement just doesn't work. And do you want to know what's REALLY aggravating!? I have EVERY SINGLE ACHIEVEMENT other than this one, from opening my inventory all the way to getting 1,000 emeralds from trading. But Map Room is just plain BROKEN! ...At least on the Switch version of Minecraft. I talked to a YouTuber named ibxtoycat about this on Twitter, and he said that the achievement is, and I quote, "just buggy and hasn't worked on any other platform lol". He mainly plays on Xbox One, so according to what he said, Map Room hasn't worked on any other Bedrock Edition platform for him. In other words, it's just impossible to get for me. Sigh...

Auldrick

I don't believe I ever said that wasn't a bug, I only said that people who think the bug is blocking them might want to take another look. This has been reported to the developers, based on the fact that so many people have trouble with it, so I'm not trying to explain it away as user error in every case. The idea is just that I was able to get the achievement (a long time ago, admittedly) after being convinced that a bug was blocking me, so others might be able to as well using the careful techniques I outlined. But I never said there wasn't a bug, and with as much effort as you've put into ensuring you're not doing anything wrong, it's likely blocking you. (BTW, congratulations on getting all the achievements! That's impressive!)

Still having a issue with getting the achievement; I placed 9 fulled explored maps in a 3x3 (9 item frames) explored by level 1 maps; and still not getting the achivement, went around the entire (area) three times, and with no luck

sorry the image is sideways, its how it uploaded.

Auldrick

@unknown: Would it be possible for you to upload a copy of your world to a file sharing site and provide us a link? Also, what platform are you using?

migrated

@Auldrick (Mod) I'm using Xbox One and I don't have the money to pay for Realms to upload it.

I rotated 1 of the map by accident unsure if that had any effect on it, but it didn't work either

Auldrick

Uploading to Realms wouldn't have been helpful anyway; we don't have access to people's realms unless they specifically invite us. And besides, uploading it could change the internal data and hide the problem, so I'd rather have had a copy taken right from your device. I understand that that's not possible with Xbox, though.

If you mean you rotated a map in its item frame, I don't think that would make any difference for the achievement. The rotation isn't stored as part of the map itself, it's stored as part of the item frame block. However, if you like you can just pop that map off the wall and place it back. That will trigger a test for the achievement again.

As info, were some of your maps created before mid-April 2018 and others created later? There was a change to how maps are stored internally at that time, and it might be that a combination of old and new maps is causing the problem. If so, the achievement might be triggered by replacing the old ones with newly generated ones (not copies of the old ones). I doubt that that's the problem, because in my experience combinations of old and new maps won't align properly on a map wall, but the April changes went through several bug fixes so some combinations of different versions might not work properly.

I created brand new maps, just a few minutes before I came here. (with the latest update) This is with the Compass; (arrow) cursor being on the map; I will try without the locatior map and see if that makes any difference

I'm still experiencing that bug with the Map Room.
I doesn't work on the 1.95version for PS4.

I tried it with 9 maps (Size: 0/4) and it didn't work...

please bring a fix for this problem soon

PS also the Sail all 7 Sees doesn't seem to work ..
