Switching hotbar slots while "using" an item (brushing, eating, shooting) replaces item in new slot with duplicate of item being used.

While brushing suspicious gravel if you switch to another item in your hotbar mid brushing, the item you switch to will be deleted and replaced with another brush with the same durability as the one you were using.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Use a brush on suspicious gravel

  2. Before the artifact is removed, switch to another item in your hotbar

Observed Results:
The item you switched to will be lost and replaced with another brush identical to the one you were using originally.

Expected Results:
Brushing should be stopped, the artifact should slowly go back into the sus block, and the item you switched to should remain in hotbar and be seleted.

Notes:
Posted this on the Minecraft Reddit page and people have stated this has happened to them also including on Java edition and with different items.

This happened on a realm but no other players were active. And Update 1.21 experiments were enabled. Again, comments on my Reddit post have said this has happened to them too, likely under different conditions ie. Single player, no experiments etc.

this happens when eating food too since the new update, when you eat while taking damage (most likely fire damage) and switching to a tool in your hotbar, your item gets deleted and replaced with a duplicate of your food source. see: MCPE-177351
i lost my op sword twice in a day and caught both times on video in that post.

However, when trying to reproduce it in a seperate world, i cannot seem to get the bug working.

Seems to also happen with food. I was consuming a golden apple, then swapped to my sword using the number key(1). Netherite sword was changed into the multiple golden apples i was eating.

It's very finicky on the timing. But it seems to happen with items that have right-click function(consumable/interactible).

Offline, single player, no cheats. Windows editon.

The bug couldn't be reproduced in creative, but could be reproduced in adventure/survival. I think it probably happenss when you switch slots when durability of the items decrease

Messing around with it in Windows 11 singleplayer survival, in my experience it seems like whether or not the item duplicates is dependent on the fullness of certain slots in your inventory or hotbar. For example, I'd fill my inventory with the duplicated items and have to put them in a chest, then it wouldn't work again. For tridents the best way I've found to reproduce is to switch to the slot two slots to the right using number keys, and then that item would be consumed, and the trident would appear between those two slots. (For example have the trident in slot 5 then switch to 2 potatoes in slot 7. The potatoes would disappear and you would have another trident in slot 6.) Although again I've had to be quite fidgety with what/how many items are where in my inventory. This method seems to sometimes but less consistently work with bows as well.

I believe I have found some more information on how to recreate this issue, I couldn't see anyone who's included this information yet so:
I was testing it with food items on windows. I found it only happening when I stopped eating and in the same moment (or more like a few milliseconds later) switch to a different slot. When i was still holding my right mouse button while switching slot, the issue wouldn't happen. It also seems like it only happens if there is actually an item stack in the slot you are switching to.

This is still a bug. I play on a server and it happened to someone else when they switched between rockets and their bow in their hotbar, duplicating their bow (and deleting their rockets. Today it happened when I switched between a bow and holding arrows in my hotbar, duplicating the bow and deleting the arrows (both bows had the same durability). We both play on PCs. I used my mouse scroll button and had been using it rapidly as I was in the middle of a high energy mini game.
