Excessive autosaving and extreme lag

Since the release of Minecraft bedrock for PlayStation 4 the game has this problem. Every time the autosave starts the world freezes for several seconds (mobs don't move, chests don't open, inventory doesn't open, blocks disappear, can't eat, damage is delayed, etc). It feels like you're on a server and you have bad internet, but in your own world.

Edit 25 April 2024:

The problem continues to occur, so I will go into detail about it.

Basically what happens is that when the auto save is executed, the world freezes completely (every 10, 30 or 60 seconds). During this period, these things happen:

1- You cannot interact with anything (mobs, chests, blocks, inventory, any entity, damage, eat food, etc.).

2- The ticks freeze, so redstone, mobs, and even the day cycle stop working for several seconds.

3- Some sounds stop playing, for example: the sound of footsteps, the sound of mobs, the sound of blocks and even background music may freeze.

4- When you break or place blocks, they may return to their place or they may return to your inventory, causing you to have to break or place them again.

5- The chunks will not load or generate, so if you go too fast you will not be able to advance until the auto save finishes. (Example: Flying with elytras, riding a boat, traveling with ender pearls or even going on minecarts. In extreme cases, even walking won't give the chunks time to load.

6- As the size of the world gets bigger, the auto save lag gets worse and worse.

What should I do to reproduce this problem?

1- Play as usual

2- The problem will begin to intensify as the world gets larger (example: +90MB = Light lag, +300MB = Severe lag, +900MB = Unplayable lag, etc.).

3- Your world will have so much lag that it will become unplayable, so you will be forced to stop playing in your world.

Here's a video showing an extreme case of several minutes, but usually no more than 60 seconds: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QwI5SwuMj-o&feature=youtu.be

Still an issue

migrated

it keeps happening all the time! It seems to get worse with large worlds (my world size is 953.1MB).

Still an issue, can't even play with my son anymore, he doesn't wanna play bc of the lag from autosave. It's a shame mojang does nothing to fix this. They just put everyone's ticket as a duplicate and refer them to this comment from years ago. Everyone is having this issue, please fix it.

If you have a copy of the world available, you might like to upload a copy of it for investigation.

  • On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.

  • On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds

  • On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)

Here are the steps to copy a world save on PlayStation:

  1. Make sure your BLANK USB stick has been formatted to FAT32

  2. On your PlayStation, go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device > Select Minecraft > Select Saved World to copy > Copy

  3. This should then copy the world save to the USB, which you can share to a file sharing site such as OneDrive, and then share the link.

If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

Now im at bedrock ps4 minecraft 1.20.81, still there s this bug.

I have been experiencing this poisoning bug for years. I dare to say that this bug is the cancer of minecraft worlds.

I have created more or less 7 Worlds and almost all of them are fully played over the years.

Everytime my world reach big size of the save file, it becomes more and more unplayable. When its too much to endure it, I create a new one.

However even when at small size, it still freeze,  even for few seconds but it happens every damn time.

The moment between the game freeze and game starts again, it happens everything that was supposed to happen during that freezing moment, but it happens right after it starts again

Many times i have died because

creeper was approching BEFORE the freeze, cant move because freezed, then AFTER the freeze it was already blown up and killed me.

Mobs were about to kill me,  i could have escape, but the game freeze, and after freeze i got dead.

While flyjng with elytra, I smashed into a wall because the Freezing moment prevented me from change direction.

Or I end up into lava while flying over it, but the game freeze and then  somehow swim into it

Let alone the chunks not loading while flyng, and ending with being stuck in middle of air with half of world under me not loadkng at all...

Cant this autosave just be REMOVED or at least could the player CHOOSE to turn it on or off, with an update?

this is still an issue for me on nintendo switch. im on the latest update version (1.21.?) and the autosave lag is still so horrible

This issue is also likely present on the Xbox platform. Specifically, I was experiencing it on my Xbox One X when playing the game at 1080p.

Issue still present, even after 1.21.2

Now my world is around 450 MB and I explored almost 4 maps.

Sometimes, especially when entering  in villages, it severely lag as: entities stay still while i can move around, but i cant interact with block or hit anything.

Is like the time stopped for everything except me, a ZA WARUDO thing

Keeps lagging. Now my world is unplayable, every minute there are brief lagging moment, other times it freeze for seconds. While fighting or mining or doing other stuff it happens very often. Now the game is not fluid anymore.

So sad that a game that is supposed to let you to infinitely explore and built, and give space to your creativity, in the end it blocks it due to lag.

Now the limit to the world is 450 MB. After that, you have to abandon everything you have done in it

This issue isn't just for PlayStation. It also affects the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

I have only been playing Minecraft for about a year and a half on the Nintendo Switch but the performance of this game now is drastically different than what it was when I started. I played almost solely in one world for a year but had to abandon that because the performance is so horrendous with it so my son and I started a new world that we play regularly - 100% survival - just over 100MB in size. We have only explored about a 2000 block radius around world spawn, we have a handful of small bases, no special farms or anything like that but since the last larger update (1.21.30 I believe) this games performance is once again so horrendous with every autosave absolutely killing the game making mobs freeze in place for seconds, endless loading bars trying to open a chest/barrel/furnace/crafting table/inventory, chunks of the map dropping out all over the place, sounds completely stopping then playing in one giant blob after it catches up, inability to mine or place blocks, inability to operate doors/gates properly etc.

The performance is so bad it completely ruins the fun of playing the game overall even just with myself playing but when I am just trying to enjoy some gaming time with my son for a bit its even worse when you add a second local player. Something has to get figured out with this because as often as the game auto saves you spend more time staring at loading bars and broken game objects than playing the game in an enjoyable manner.

When this issue happens to me, I’m always in a village. For example, if I was to put a job block in a village, sometimes the villagers would stop moving and I can’t interact with them. I have to wait a minute or two for everything to sort itself out. Other times, it’s when I’m in a village on a part of my world I know to be laggy for whatever reason. I play using the PS4 version of Minecraft on the PS5 on my own

I signed up just to say—same here. Like others have mentioned, this issue seems to happen more often during autosaves and especially in villages. Strangely, it’s worse in villages with lots of Acacia buildings for me.

I’m at the point where it’s making me want to quit the game, even though I just started playing this year. The problem is, I KEEP DYING because of it. The first few times, everything froze except for me, and then a creeper or something else would kill me without any warning. So, I tried to outsmart it by stacking blocks when I noticed the freeze, thinking nothing could reach me. But, when it unfroze, the blocks disappeared, and I fell to my death. What a way to go! I should have known I wasn't really standing on cobblestone.

Also I've had cases where the freeze occurs while I'm on a horse, and I cannot get off of the horse, even after the freeze subsides... I still can't get off the horse. I ran around all night on that horse, but later realized, by jumping in water I'd break the cycle.

Like others have said, I know I'm frozen first when things stop making noise... doors, chests opening, etc... then I'll notice mobs not moving. Then if I try to enter my inventory, it doesn't respond. What's weird about it is everything stops, but you can continue moving, so normally I just try to get inside of a house and pray when I hit close door, it actually closed, then I wait literally like 3-5 minutes.

MOJANG PLEASE FIX THIS!!

This issue is present on all consoles and makes the game unplayable in the long run!! I don't know why you ignore this problem, but you have to do something about it!!

migrated

Happening on my PS4, now I can't even play because of the lag. I regret buying Minecraft

Same problem. Bigger file size, worse the lag. In addition, there s the slow chunk loading that makes flying with elytra impossivle

Just lost my hard-core world. reached day 60 in the stronghold fighting off silverfish autosave gave me extreme a extreme lagspike for about 10 seconds then I was at the “you died” screen. progress lost and time wasted. it's ridiculous I've been playing minecraft since 2014 on console and it’s only gotten worse. i get it it's a unresolved issue. it's the same with ps4/ps5/xboxone/Xbox series. pls fix this.

Kelby Hill

I have that issue on my xbox as well, but I also have a constant lag. My game is autosaving CONSTANTLY, I mean every 5-10 seconds the autosave icon pops up. This causes me to just jitter around a bit, have small lag spikes and just makes my movement feel super janky. The only solution I have is reducing my render to the single digits which sucks, and still doesn't truly solve the problem, rather just mitigates it.

On and older 360 edition you could choose the intervals at which the game would autosave, however it would stop the game and put you on a loading screen for a dozen- two dozen seconds. Works great on single player, would kinda suck on multiplayer, but I would rather have that than the inability to play my game properly

James P

Been away from the game for a long time, started a new world this week playing split screen on ps4. At first we experienced the occasional spike for a few seconds, but day by day the issue got worse. After the game file reached 90mb, these spikes would past in excess of 15 seconds.

Today, loaded the game in single player, game file has now reached 150mb. Each autosave would cause some sort of a spike but every 15-20 minutes, the game would completely freeze for over a minute. When my friend joined split screen, game became completely unplayable, game would freeze for well over a minute, we would get maybe 10 seconds of smooth running then freeze again. While frozen, friend killed twice and I was struck by lightning 5k blocks from spawn.

GG, world lost. Bug been open for 3 years!? Poor form
