I have an enclosure with sheep in it. It is fully enclosed and is two fence blocks high. Despite this, my sheep still manage to get out. So far, in about two weeks of playing, this has happened three or four times. I have never seen the sheep get out, nor can I reproduce it, but I'll come back from another part of my world and one of my sheep is roaming around on the outside of the pen (and I know it's my sheep because they're dyed blue).
I'm assuming it has something to do with that section/chunk of the world being loaded and unloaded, and it can also happen if the world is closed and reopened. I thought maybe when that chunk unloads sometimes the sheep have their heads sticking through the fence, so when it reloads it doesn't know which side of the fence the sheep is on.

I started having this issue when I upgraded from 1.7.2 to 1.7.4. I can watch them just walk through the fence like it's not even there, but I can't get my character to do the same

I have still the same problem. They don´t exactly just walk through the fence, but mobs tend to group together at the boundary and stick their head through. They start some weird forwards and backward motion if they are "to deep" in it and from time to time one suddenly pops out. It doesn´t really matter which animal it is - although adult cows are not quite as bad as all the others. Really annoying when they trample all over the farmland or one has not many animals.

Enclosure doesn't need to be made of fences to cause this glitch. I have 2x2x3 closed chambers built entirely of stone, with lots of villagers in them (to let iron golems spawn). Nothing special happens if I let the game alone for several hours. But if I quit the game and restart, most of the time some of villagers are found outside the jails.

Chickens in automatic egg harvester end up in the section for eggs, so I have to kill all chickens and start again. Sheep, pigs and cows get out of two fence high enclosures.

I approached the above fenced areas and found one sheep in with the cows and one in with the chickens. The left, darker fenced area (rabbits) was empty. There were a few chickens and cows running around outside of the fences.
I separated everything again and exited/re-entered the game 10 times. Over the course of those 10 reloads, one sheep (the blue one in with the cows) escaped its fence.

This is still a bug in v0.13.1 on Android. I just tried it out (to see if it had been recently fixed), and it's pretty easy to reproduce.
—
Steps to reproduce this bug:
1) Create a small rectangle of wooden fence blocks near an animal, leaving one piece of the fence open.
2) Lure the animal inside your enclosure by holding the appropriate bait, then place the final fence block to trap the animal inside.
3) Wait for the animal to walk partially into one of the fence blocks. An animal that is "sticking its head through the fence" should be in the fence block.
4) Save/quit the world.
5) Load the world and resume playing.
Result: The animal may* now be outside, or on top of, the fence.
—
*The animal can't occupy the fence block itself when the game loads. But it can be on any of the nearby air/empty blocks. This means that there is a chance that the animal will simply be pushed back into the enclosure, making the bug difficult to notice.

If this is true, a temporary fix so we can continue to play the game would be to put a double row of fences around the animals. Then, there would only be the enclosure side that has the air block next to it.

I just spawned a load of chickens in a 2x2 hole as seen here:
[media]I then exited and reloaded the world. When we reloaded, a large number of the chickens were suffocating inside the walls, and died.
I think this is happening a lot, and that's why animals are either dying or escaping by glitching through walls when reloading.

Yes, still affects 0.14.0. I built a fully enclosed area out of stone bricks and put a pack of cows into it. After reloading several times I saw one of the cattle was getting out of stone bricks. The same thing happened when I used glass blocks instead of stone bricks so the type of block is irrelevant to the bug.

Our cats and dogs do relocate themselves when reloading the world...
about 8 blocks south (sun rises in north).
and 16 blocks east
... might be a problem with chunk/block position?

Same problem here, animals (ie: sheep, cows, etc) would gather in a bunch near the enclosure wall. I would come back 5-10 minutes later and see leather laying on the ground and have less cows. I guess due to suffocation. Also they would sometimes appear outside of the enclosure when reloading the world or coming back after walking out of the area. I have also noticed an odd behavior with my penned sheep. They would try to jump and partially climb a ladder I had placed to get in and out of the enclosure. The ladder\blocks were 3 blocks high. My version is 0.14.3.

I have same problem, which a submitted a report for the beta. Now its live the issue is not as bad but still there and worse then it was pre 0.15
Any entity that is pushed up close to a block/fence when chunk is reloaded they are pushed out of enclosure.
This issue is making any automatic farms very hard to manage. Each time I load the world I have to spend a fair amount of time putting cows, chickens and villagers back. Also 2 high entities if in a 2 high air space with a block on top will move nearly every time the chunk is loaded.

Still happening to me, MCPE 15.4 ios iPhone 6s
With the addition of Name tags, I thought for sure that would solve the problem. In fact, I thought mob-DESPAWNING was an intended element of survival mode. I used 3 name tags that were very hard to find in the world to name some sheep I had found in rare colors so I could always harvest their whool.
I went mining deep, came back and almost all were gone. Nametag did not change anything they still de-spawn and there is no way they got out because I have a very very enclosed space for all my mobs.
I really do hope this is fixed, as it is extremely discouraging.
SIDE-NOTE: Searching for this issue gets little results on the Internet. It's mostly just people making fun of the person reporting, but it is a real issue. I really hope Mojang takes it seriously. I'm at my wits end!

I'm beginning to believe this bug is caused by the fact that mobs load before the environment as chunks are loading. I can always see animals and fires before the landscape loads. This may allow mobs to wonder out of enclosures in ways otherwise impossible, or else suffocate when land loads.

Since 0.15.6 even YOU can glitch through a 1-block thick platform and fall off when a certain condition is met. I will create another ticket later as it may be similar but a different bug. For some reason I can no longer reproduce this. Only mobs glitch out.

Yes I get this bug on my world. It also happens with my exp grinder, the hostile mobs that have been inside the killing chamber glitch out and teleport to a random place about 5 blocks away from the chamber they end up suffocating but it's much worse if you have say an animal farm and they are all able to escape from this bug.

Yes on my iPad mini 1 with the 9.3.5 operating system as well as my game is continually crashing about the game crashing you made us iOS users wait and now most of us can't even play it and nobody has even apologised, come on guys. (also mobs are still despawning as well)

Yes, happening for me in 0.16.1 on iOS 10.1 / iPad3. Above ground, mobs are loaded outside their fences when world reloads. Below ground, they are loaded inside walls and suffocate. In my testing in a creative world, mobs mostly seem to escape in the direction of sunrise (I tested cows and pigs in a 4x4 pen in a creative world with 4x1 pens on each compass direction to catch strays; I first noticed it with cows in my survival world). I tested villagers too in the same creative world setup, and they escaped in both the direction of sunrise and sunset. It appears to happen only if a mob is close to the fence. Looks like they get pushed through it by mobs inside. See attached screenshots. Camera always facing sunrise. World reloaded between each pic.

This happened in 1.0.0 - 3 out of 10 Villagers escaped from a 2x2 glass enclosure that was part of an iron farm. I think it happened immediately after a long stall from travelling through a portal (didn't crash though).

I can't seem to reproduce this for 1.0.4.0.
Spawned in at least 50 sheep in a 12x12 diameter fenced area, surrounded with more smaller-fenced areas.
Tried going to the Nether/End then coming back, tried leaving the loaded chunk far away into a new chunk then coming back, but nothing happened. All of them stayed in the same area.

Have you tried this to replicate it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUs1er67Zlg method to verify its gone?. Must be placed across chunks (as people reacted on my issue it being present this way on MCPE. (blocks can be fence gate around) (on the video you see wool rows in the middle of the wool is the chunk edge) It not depends on what you build but where you build it. See my issue for a bigger enclosure. (as nathan mentioned it) This same behaviour is happening on pc java version and console , i can't verify it for MCPE
Tried it now actually (chunk borders are a bit tricky to locate; had to turn off Fancy Graphics to see where the borders were located), I had a couple of zombies suffocate in a wall/escape (one zombie got pushed by another zombie) after I left and re-entered the world again.
Maybe it's possible that since mobs/players actually spawn into the world on the 'corner' of a block, if they respawn again (next to a wall/barrier of sorts), they might be pushed towards into the wall/barrier (if another mob pushes them into it).
Although, I tried this a few more times and sometimes nothing happens and sometimes the mobs suffocate/escape.

Thanks @unknown. That means it still affects 1.0.4.0.

On pc side of this bug, it is related / theory to one chunk being loaded the other chunk isn't yet and mobs pushing the other mob out of that unloaded chunk into a block/fence. That is why a bigger enclosure one block away from the edge of the chunk "works" as well.
One person had the idea that unloaded chunks should be handled as a solid until their loaded. Other way is freezing mob movement when the adjacent chunk hasn't been loaded (but that might cause issues/visual glitches) I suggest a single solution across all platforms would be best.
So it would seem that this issue is in affect when the enclosure is near/at the chunk borders. Otherwise, if the enclosure is away from the chunk border or within the chunk itself, nothing should happen.
Not sure how else to clarify this, so sorry if it doesn't make too much sense.

It should be loading without issues in the center of the chunk. Your thinking is totally right
M|MB M=mob | = chunk border B= block
Left mob is loaded pushes the other mob in the unloaded chunk into the block upon loading that chunk (theory) At least this way you can replicate it. (I attached a image on that behaviour with a villager getting pushed)
(note that recreating the bug depends on the loading algorithm that is used for chunks one chunk has to load before the other to recreate it. If it doesn't work try standing in another chunk or approaching it from another side.)

It might eventually be even 2 bugs one the pushing upon load and the chunk loading in itself at least as above it is easy to recreate.
So it looks like we're getting somewhere. It does seem that chunk borders are involved with this issue (with the mobs pushing each other and the enclosure located near said chunk borders).

I have been experiencing this same problem in 1.0.3. My iron golem farm keeps breaking because all of the villagers will explode out of their holding cells. But I'm unsure if it's actually on the chunk border where they escape. Because the chunky border is one block away from the holding cell. So I had to trap all of the villagers st the bottom in a fence.

I am experiencing this bug in Windows 10 version 1.0.3. I notice animals outside of their fenced pen. I know they must be mine because some of them are dyed sheep or mobs that don't spawn in my biome.

The most common time I see this reproduced is if I go away on a journey, my mobs have sometimes escaped when I return. I think it may be something to do with them being unloaded and loaded from memory. Doesn't happen every time, but fairly often.

I can definitely confirm this is still happening (1.0.5.3).
(attached three screenshots = one showing before the escape, one showing after the escape, and one showing mob drops from mobs that were suffocated in a wall).
It only occurs after leaving/re-entering the game; the mobs push each other past the chunk border before the surrounding enclosures can even load in.

This is happening to me too. It is exceptionally bad since i am making frequent trips to and from the nether. My animals are ether out of there pens or are just gone. (i think they are reloading inside the hills next to the pens and dying). This is happening to my pigs, chickens, sheep, horses, and donkey.

I'm playing on Windows 10 Edition version 1.0.8 single player survival world that was created after version 1.0.5 when MCPE-8002 was supposedly fixed. I thought the issue I'm experiencing was MCPE-8002 but a moderator directed me here to this bug. Passive mobs including horses, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and rabbits have been disappearing from my fenced pens. I have led them with wheat/carrots, tamed them, placed saddles on them and definitely "interacted" with them in many ways. I have tried naming them, attaching them with a lead to the inside of a closed fence two blocks high and I still lose them. The animals tend to "cluster" in one far corner with two or more occupying the same block. The animals are either escaping, dying by suffocating in the dirt or fence or despawning. This has happened multiple times with multiple animals in multiple fenced pens over and over again. I will go underground to mine and when I come back up all my horses or rabbits will be gone and the pen will be empty. This most recent time, I had six horses in a 9x9 fence and when I logged back on, all but two of them were gone. There was no lightning storm that could have killed them. Continuing to lose fast/special animals that take a long time to find is very frustrating.

When the game is struck with massive lag, even adjacent chunks struggle to load. Mobs spawn before fences and they frequently have time to wander out of their fence before it spawns in. While fixing the lag is ideal, it seems that the fences and terrain should spawn before the mobs to keep them from running away. Even if this source of lag is fixed, sooner or later another source will be introduced.
See screenshot where adjacent chunk is still unloaded and cows and chickens have wandered out of their enclosures.
Related: game crashes and lag occur almost every time I load a world. I would much prefer a larger save file so that the adjacent chunks do not have to generate whenever the world is opened!

I've experienced something similar to this in my Realm on the Xbox. I had a farm full of animals I bred, left the chunk and loaded up a zombie farm for XP, after some time (can't say how long), I noticed more and more animals disappearing, first pigs, then sheep, llamas and horses, but oddly enough not cows. Also found chickens escaping an automated chicken cooker, come home to a room full of chickens. My villager breeder lost all of the villagers it bred. I've resorted to curing zombie villagers and keeping them in boats for the time being.

I am having an issue where my animals (Pigs, Cows, Sheep, Horses, and Lamas) are disappearing. First I had them in fenced areas, 5x5 areas, with one gate and no adjacent blocks or methods of jumping out. After loosing all my animals over two days (no remains, no mobs or creepers) even though they are safe inside my base with more than enough lighting, I tried something new. I started tying my animals up with leashes to the fence posts. At first this seemed to work, but then on the 3rd day, half my cows disappeared, one horse disappeared, all my pigs disappeared. My llamas and sheep were fine though. Mind you, these animals are in pens close to each other, and while a horse disappears, the other two with it are still there and unharmed. For the animals that disappeared and were tied to the fencing, the leash was still there tied to the fence, just no animal. I tried to collect the leash from the fence, and it just disappears when I tried to collect it.
These pen areas are roofed / covered, so I know it is not lighting.
This is very frustrating as I use to have a nice collection of animals when I brought this game from the 360 version over to the bedrock edition. Now I cant start a small collection. I am in survival and have never broken that, but trying to survive and not be able to collect animals for breeding and supplies is completely hampering my ability to play at all.
I am looking forward to hearing from you regarding this matter.

This affects villagers also. My villager breeder uses a glass fence to separate baby villagers from adults. When the chunk is unloaded/ reloaded, adults came through "appearing" on the wrong side of that glass fence. 1.2.9 Realms

I've also observed the issue with villagers and glass fence. It definitely started to appear from 1.2.9 (or 1.2.8), not before.

It does play merry hell with anything to do with villagers where chunks are loaded/ unloaded. ;(

I would like to note it happens more specifically with chickens.. They escape wooden fence enclosures, and also 1x1 air space that is enclosed. I have not had a problem with my sheep or other mobs, but I also suggested the chunk loading/unloading theory. Thank you!

Everytime I arrive near the chunk containg my farm some of my sheep or cows have gotten through the fences the only animals not escaping are chickens.

This is still an active issue as of 1.12.1 in Bedrock (playing on Xbox One). Not only are mobs being spawned outside of enclosures that they were in previously, the behavior now extends to villagers. Lately, the villagers have been appearing *inside *fenced areas they should not have access to. In addition, villagers have been found in the ocean biome 100+ blocks away being attacked by Drowned. These were my villagers, as one was a fully-leveled Shepherd villager. It was suspected that a person in the Realm was killing them, now we find them in the ocean swimming around as if placed there.
