Possible Workaround
A workaround that has worked for many users is to restart your device fully and then load up the launcher again.
When I open the Minecraft Launcher, it says: "Sorry, something went terribly wrong and you encountered a bug. Please file a report here."

I have had this same issue as well. I am on mac and am having the exact same problem.
If you are familiar with a launcher called Lunar Client, none of the versions there have been working either, and that issue may correspond to this one.
Having same issue on Ubuntu. After removing via gdebi, deleting .minecraft folder, and downloading and installing the minecraft.deb file again, I get the same error when the launcher is started. Attaching launcher_log and launcher_cef_log files.

Having the same symptoms on Linux. Disabled hardware acceleration in launcher and it no longer displays the message. Will monitor to see if functions fine otherwise.
Why Re-Install when the Way with the Repair Process is Shortlier and Easier?
I Mean, Open the MinecraftInstaller.msi and use the Repair Process Safes Time and Network (When someone use Hotspot by his Phone).
Similar issue just after installing it on Manjaro (from AUR)
Edit: restarting the launcher apparently fixed the problem
Hey, I just fixed this issue for myself. Looking through the updates it states that 1.17 uses Java 16, so I went and downloaded java 16 and it worked straight away. Worth a shot
Issue on Linux, Chromebook to be specific. Minecraft was not working, so I restarted Linux and reinstalled MC. MC came up with this error.
I am having the same issue as well. One on my original mojang account, and my migrated MS account
I updated my libstdc++ library (on Ubuntu 16.04) using the instructions provided by Brian Carlson (first comment here: MCL-18211 ), reinstalled MC again with a freshly downloaded copy, and it's working for me now.
I am unsure how this works for me, fresh install on a recently reinstall on a new HD, and getting this error in Java. I keep hitting Try again and it does nothing.
Ensuring I had Java 16 for snapshot 1.17 along with disabling hardware acceleration is what fixed it for me.
Repairing installation through the installer worked for me, although may be a different issue.
Had the same problem on Windows 10, did a clean install, still got the error. I attached my log file:
[media]I had this problem as well and I may have found a solution on Windows. Go to the folder %appdata%\.minecraft then delete versions folder.
Hey! This is often a problem with people who haven't installed Java Edition or people with the wrong version of Java.
If you would like to install Java, click https://www.java.com/en/.]
Please make sure to install the correct version, based on your OS and bits.
Most Windows computers will be running x64 on Windows 10, but make sure to check.
Hope this helped!
@unknown please do not recommend people to download cracked and/or pirated launchers. These are illegal and are not supported by Mojang. Your comment has been removed for this reason.
Hello! I am trying to install minecraft on windows 8.1 for my brother. This error popped up and idk what to do?
Running OpenSUSE with openjdk-11 installed. Getting the same error.

Workaround: Downloaded minecraft.exe instead of msi https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative
That worked for me.
Restarting did not help, Removing minecraft launcher and using msi install did not help.
Restarting the launcher did not help me. I even logged out and logged back in and I still got this message. I am going to try to either redownload it or try minecraft.exe. I've never had this problem before.
Yeah i'e tried different launchers and accounts(mojang and microsoft) as well but none of them works. Is this issue limited to mac users?
But when ever I do a clean install of minecraft(deleting .minecraft folder), then this error occurs, but after restarting the launcher, it goes away but I can't connect to premium servers saying "Failed to authenticate: authetication servers may be down"
Same issue with a fresh install on ubuntu this morning. Restarting the launcher caused it to work.
Definitely not limited to mac users.
I don't remember seeing the error message in the logs, but I did notice after running it a second time, the versions location was updated...
[media]Maybe that is helpful, maybe not. The first run was at 8:48, second at 8:52.
Same issue on Windows 10 Pro 20H2 today. Downloaded the installer, ran it, the launcher updated when I first ran launched it, then I got this. Restarting the launcher fixed the problem. Logged in through a Mojang/Minecraft account (i.e. not Microsoft).
similar issue with me also on windows 10. launcher updated. i had to log in. critical error. installations empty. a launcher restart fixed it for me
I faced this issue on mac, I found the best solution is to ensure your mac is updated fully then restarting the launcher- not sure what it was but there was no real issue just an initial launch problem (at least for me this message appeared on my screen after just downloading.)
Same here, but there is even a new skin on my account that I definitely haven't uploaded.
I was having this same issue on the development version of java, and I switched to the normal version and it seems to have fixed the issue, I don't know if this would need more testing though.
I solved it with this: launcher "settings" then "use launcher beta" then close the launcher and reopen it.
Hope it works for everyone

I closed the launcher then opened it again (without restarting my system) to get around the issue myself. But voting this up for having the issue.
I'mm having the same problem. Deleting mods won't work , using beta launcher won't work and reinstlling it or restarting your computer also doesn't work.
It looks to me like the launcher is unable to find the file called .version. Could someone with this issue confirm that the file is not there? On Windows it would be located by default at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Minecraft Launcher\game\.version
Ined, the .version file is there but still shows the same error message.
I had the same issue when there were no installations found (couldn't create one either because the button isn't there when there're no installations)
I have found a quite simple fix for me and that's by reloading the application as administrator, if this doesn't work check to make sure your logged into an account with FULL admin permissions and retry
This might have something to do with running the insiders version on Windows 11. I'm also running Windows 11 from the dev channel, and have the same issue. Just comes to show how unstable dev versions of software (especially os's) can be. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Doesn't have anything to do with Windows 11, we've seen reports of this happening for all OSes, including macOS and Linux.
For troubleshooting, I'd recommend restarting your computer and seeing if that solves the issue.
i just fixed it
i just reload minecraft
all i didn't was delete the tab then click tab again and it worked for me
i think devs we're working on something but everything is gone i had
everything is gone D:
As someone else suggested, checking "Use beta versions of the launcher" has worked for an odd reason.
Just bough Minecraft Java on July 11th and was having the same issue. Checking "Beta" worked for me. Really surprised this has been an issue for almost a month with no real fix.
I also have this problem. I just factory reset my computer because my previous problem was with the game itself not starting after clicking 'play' from the launcher. I was trying to figure out how to install mods on my system which no longer supports Java, and I thought I may have deleted something I needed to run the game, hence the reset. But it looks like resetting my computer just made the issue worse, and now I cannot even access the Launcher. I've been battling this issue since 11am this morning. I just purchased Minecraft not even a week, ago... and I was enjoying it just fine until now. As a new Java player, I'm very frustrated T-T.
I had the same issue and resolved it by installing Java JRE on my computer.
(It seems like Minecraft isn't checking to see if Java is installed.)
I'm having this issue as well when I try to start Java Edition. I can't play at all. I uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft, as well as restarted my computer with no luck at all.
I am also having this same issue.
As soon as I re-installed the mojang launcher it popped up and printed the same error:
