When I hit start in Oculus Home I can see a splash screen with the Minecraft logo and first it says "Checking for Updates", then "Loading!" and then it crashes to Oculus Home.
I couldn't find log files/crash dumps and tried most of the stuff on reddit to fix this (copy and rename the language files). Is there anything I can try?
Everything on my end is up to date.
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta runs fine in 2D/normal mode.
I have tried reinstalling Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta from the Windows Store and I reinstalled the VR launcher in Oculus Home. Every other VR software (Oculus or Steam) works. Currently I have a AMD/ATI R9 390 with 16.8.2 drivers (but I tried it with the older drivers and the newest beta drivers).

I've seen that post and looked for a vorbis.acm in my system32 (and searched also system wide) but I don't have that file on my system.
Updated the description.
Tried the latest Minecraft version on the Windows store, 0.159.0.0, same problem. No updates on the Oculus store for the launcher.
Store version 0.1510.0.0; same problem.
The Oculus Home launcher updated to 0.16.0 and the store version to 0.1600.5.0. Problem persists. It's still crashing while launching. Can I do something? Sending log files?
I'm having the same issue. I cannot get VR mode to work no matter what I try. I'm fully updated (Drivers/Windows/Game Version). Please help...this has been going on for two months now.
Eh, I gave up on it. Everything is in beta and that's really convenient for the devs.
If something doesn't work they can just say "Hey, it's beta! What did you expect?".
It doesn't matter that we bought the software and the hardware for real money, not beta money. Heck, Oculus Home is still in "beta" after many, many months.
Alpha, beta, release. Those terms doesn't matter anymore because their meaning has changed.
Nowadays, alpha and beta means "good to ship" with the bonus that you can say "not my problem" to your customers.
And as a double bonus you just don't support your customers. In September I asked for support over email. They don't support over email, I got a link for the bugtracker. Thanks!
So, I stumbled over a reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/5cf8z2/minecraft_w10_is_moving_out_of_beta_getting_256/d9whiro/?st=ivfbb302&sh=f4b5bdb1
Quote: "i had an similar issue, for me it was my windows password being different than my windows store password."
Could this be true? I have a local windows account and I am logged in the windows store with my Microsoft account (obviously different passwords).
Oculus Home launcher version: 0.16.2 (Release Notes: "Minecraft Windows 10 Edition runs on Oculus Rift, and supports all the Windows 10 features you know and love" Yeah, about that...)
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition: 0.1602.2.0
Same problem.
Did anyone read the reddit post I linked above? Is the password mismatch the problem? Hello?
Still gets the error. Not vorbiz though. Just cannot install and run the game on oculus vr. I get the error 0x803f8001 when trzing to install.
I just bought a fresh computer with a new win 10 install. Updated to patch 1607. But still no succes.
Crashes are logged automatically and sent to Mojang for further investigation. Is this phenomenon still happening in 1.0.4.11?
Yes, still happening. The only difference is that it doesn't crash silently anymore instead you have to confirm that it doesn't work and press A to exit.
Minecraft Win10 Edition 1.0.554.0
Oculus Launcher 1.0.5
Same problem.
This just started happening to me since the Better Together update v1.2.1 / Rift Launcher v1.1.5 / Oculus App Version 1.18.0.442021 / NVIDIA 1080 Driver 385.69 / Win 10 build 15063.608
Launch Minecraft in Oculus, splash screen, Checking for Updates, Launching! and hangs so I have take off the rift and kill Minecraft from the PC window or via task manager.
One thing I also changed recently was to install all my Oculus games on my E: drive. Oculus software is running on my C: drive.
The email from the recent update for the issue reminded me of this problem (btw vivecraft works really good, for all the people who are having problems: use vivecraft!) so I though: see for yourself:
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition 1.2.1
Oculus Launcher Version 1.1.5
Still the same problem (lol). Launching! -> Minecraft failed to launch, Press A.
Someone looked into the store password/Windows password mismatch problem? Will we get real Support now that it's out of beta? Or is it still in beta, whereas the version number suggests it's out? Should I try again with email to support or will they tell me that I should open a ticket in the bugtracker?
Updated the affected versions. What do I have to do that this will get the status confirmed?
I had the same problem and reached out to Oculus support to fix it.
For me, the fix was that I had two video cards. The Oculus was plugged into one, and the monitor was plugged into the other. Moving both to the same video card and rebooting fixed my problem.
This configuration wasn't an issue under the older version, but something in the Better Together update didn't like it.
FYI, I also opened Minecraft directly from Windows, on the desktop first.
@Jim Burtoft
That's not the same problem. I only have one video card in this machine and both, monitor and Rift are plugged into it.
Anyone else who is having this problem, is your Oculus Software folder located on a different drive than Windows or Oculus home?
Minecraft for Windows 10 doesn't give you a choice where to install it so it must be on installed with Windows on the System drive C:
Since i've installed the Minecraft Launcher for Oculus on my E: drive Minecraft VR no longer launches.
Oculus Home is still on my system drive, C: , but I reinstalled all Oculus games and apps on E: because I was running out of space.
It would be nice if Oculus gave us the option to choose were we want to install each game, like Steam and Origin and Battle.net do. At least we could test the theory that using multiple drives causes this bug.
In beta 1.2.10.1 I can load the game in the Oculus, but when I select a world to load, the game freezes up. It does not do this when I play the game without the VR.
Another thing that I noticed in oculus is that the main menu is not displayed in a 360 degree view like it used to be. Now it is like looking at an IMax screen.
@Lloyd: I don't think that's the same problem described in that bug report, please open another one or look for the right one.
@Napoleon Bowie: The new Oculus version does have this feature and I tested it out asap; it still doesn't work so that theory is proven false (for me at least).
Not a good look mojang/Microsoft/Oculus.
Yes, I did end up doing a full re-install of all the applications (Oculus, Minceraft, Minecraft VR Launcher) on my E: drive SSD and still have the problem of crashing on the title screen. I'm convinced this all started with the Better Together Update, for me anyways.
Oculus support suggested I do a full OS re-install, while I do enjoy Minecraft in VR, I don't like it that much.
I found a fix for this issue.
First you have to run the OculusSetup.exe, you'll see 4 options, select Uninstall (this will uninstall everything, you'll have to redownload and reinstall all your games, I have like 82 games and slow internet 😞 so this was painful, I just reinstalled Robo Recall and my saves are still there so that's nice)
Once everything is uninstalled, you'll have to run OculusSetup.exe again, install Oculus to your C: drive.
After all that is done, download and install minecraft on your C: drive. After Minecraft is installed I went to my settings and added a new Library location and added my E: drive and made it my default but only after I installed minecraft on my C: drive.
It's annoying but it worked for me.
Edit: I should mention that you have to uninstall the Oculus app, just doing a reinstall didn't work for me.
Thank you for your report!
Crashes such as these are logged automatically, and will be looked into further by the development team.

Is this a joke? Nothing is resolved, the same problem still exists over multiple Windows 10 versions and Minecraft versions over years now and you have the gall to close this bug as resolved? Incredible!
Nothing is resolved here, please reopen and fix.
Reopening the ticket - sorry this is an ongoing issue for you.
Have you had any success with installing the software on the same drive?
No I had no luck with it. Reinstalling does nothing for me. It doesn't help that a few comments on that ticket have obviously nothing to do with the ongoing problem I and a few others are experiencing. When I have time I'll update the ticket with the newest information, game-, oculus- and driver versions.
Same here....Windows 10 Home edition, All updates have been installed. I7 6700 / Nvidia GTX 1070 ..... monitor and Rift both on GTX 1070 Please help!!
I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms: Mojang on white background shows up, after that screen stays white on monitor while Oculus returns to Oculus Home. Game working fine in Windows 10 without VR.
Additional information that might help somebody track down what's actually causing the problem: I created a new Windows user on the same PC and there it works without any problems. So that disqualifies all theories about 2nd monitors connected to IGPs and things like that because the hardware is identical.
Have you tried reinstalling the game on the account where the issue is occurring still? (Please back up any data before reinstalling though)
Yes, I uninstalled both the Oculus Minecraft app and the Windows 10 Minecraft app, even checked that the uninstallers had completely deleted the application folders (which they had) and ran the Windows store update search multiple times.
Are there any logs or anything that could be useful for finding the cause of the issue?
Crash logs are sent automatically, so will be picked up and tracked. One thing that might help, are you using the same Xbox Live account also?
Yes, I tried all combinations of Xbox live and Windows store account logins I could think of trying and nothing changed the behavior regarding this issue.
Regarding crash logs, maybe the reason this bug is still around over two years after the first report is that it doesn't actually crash? It just hangs there on on the white screen.
So, still no help? Hard to believe !
Frustrating to say the least. It's been an issue since September 2016.....
forget it, this will never get fixed. install vivecraft and enjoy the game if you still want to play it in vr.
Have you plan to fix the problem a day ??
1 year a wait for this bug...
Minecraft Windows 10 work like a charm without oculus rift
Crash at "Checking for Updates" when i launch from oculus ...
Rift edition installed in J: disk
Minecraft Windows 10 installed in C:
Thx to do something please.
@unknown Sorry this is an ongoing issue for you. Did this start occurring after any particular update for you?
is this a joke? this is a open and reopened bug that was never fixed despite some people polluting the bugreport with (maybe) similar problems that they claim to have fixed; the problem that I originally reported in 2016 never was fixed by mojang and I don't think I overstep my boundaries when I argue that mojang/Microsoft never seriously looked into that problem. since then, personally, I gave up on you a long time ago already; when I play VR minecraft I play the java version with the mod, but seeing this bug report gets updated every so often from someone with this problem who wants to see it fixed, not everyone has given up on you. Personally, I don't care anymore but now I'm curious if it ever gets fixed (I don't think so) and how long we can keep open this bugreport.
Agreed...
@Mega_Spud... no, this bug is from start... after each update... Minecraft, or Rift, i try to launch without success.
I see every log i found about this in Windows without any serious clues.
Uninstall or install from scratch... don t help.
Create a new windows profil and Rift only with... Crash again.
Change every credential in Rift or W10 app Minecraft W10, don't help...
Standard Windows 10 edition (not rift) work like a charm... With Rift, crash...
I have change my Rift for Rift S... Crash again...
Any help is welcome...
Still not working for me as well. They are never going to look into this issue. Check the reviews for Minecraft on the Oculus store, lots of people having the same error. Sad because it's probably something simple to fix.....
Also look at the comment by Johnny above on Jan 2, 2019. That seems to indicate that there is possibley an issue tied to the Windows account we are launching Minecraft VR from??
"Additional information that might help somebody track down what's actually causing the problem: I created a new Windows user on the same PC and there it works without any problems. So that disqualifies all theories about 2nd monitors connected to IGPs and things like that because the hardware is identical."
@Napoleon Bowie
Thx.
I have try (again) with a complet new windows profil.
No succes... Minecraft rift launch... Minecraft W10 install and launch... Minecraft Rift update... and crash...
Minecraft W10 standard work like a charm...
So, no success...
Thx again...
Still an issue in March 2020, Oculus support just redirects you eventually to here... Not their fault, The devs should seriously look into this issue, especially since many people can't obtain a crash report or anything.
Can confirm still crashes for me as well. Could it have something to do with the authentication to the Microsoft servers? I seem to remember seeing an error in my windows log files related to authentication when launching the game in VR.
UPDATE: Windows update KB4550945 installed on my PC last night. Prior to this update Minecraft failed every time. Since this update it now works.
Using a Rift cv1. I’ve been playing for about a year; I used to get frequent crashes in VR after loading, which would normally leave a task open that had to be killed in task manager before the game could be relaunched. If this happened every time, I could usually start up in standard 2D mode to find there was a marketplace pop up. Once dismissed it was normally ok to restart in VR.
At some point since the 25th April 2020 every time the checking for updates screen appears the game boots me out completely. There are no tasks left running. Latest nvidia and latest oculus drivers installed.
I tried KB4550945. Didn't make a difference. Crash in VR with whitescreen on monitor. As has been the case for over a year now in my case.
Same issue.
I own minecraft windows 10 version.
I installed the Oculus minecraft launcher
I can play the windows version but whenever I try to launch the game via the oculus client minecraft crashes back to desktop.
Any suggestions?
I don't know why but after it kicks you back to the oculus menu i can just go to the details page then it works fine
Still having the same problem with version 1.16.2003.0
What the user above mentioned, going to the details page, does not work for me.
Same issue
Hi,
2 year+ I can't play Bedrock MinecraftVR.
From a new realease, crash is replaced by another problem... red screen on PC, black screen on rift, and NOT CRASH (so, no log)... I hear music in oculus and black screen with.
(standard Bedrock with no rift work like a charm... every oculus game work too... just minecraft don't)
Same than "MCPE-101609 Oculus VR Black Screen / Red Screen on PC Monitor"
(Closed Jira MCPE 101609 is linked to this jira thread... curious, not same pb, and not solved too)
Bedrock Minecraft 1.16.40
Latest W10 Pro + Intel® Core™ i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 + Intel® UHD Graphics 630 + (Oculus Rift S or Oculus Rift or Oculus Rift Quest)
First Monitor on Gtx1080, second on Intel UHD Graphics 630
I have try :
Unactived second screen
Unplug screen
Unactived on bios Intel graphic card, and try with only one monitor on GTX1080
Every patch found on internet... nothing work... (eg windowed minecraft, vsync, g-sync off, sound card inactived, etc...)
Can you see this seriously problem ?
Thx for your help.
🙂
It looks like this issue is finally fixed after only 4 years. Or maybe not fixed, but no longer relevant:
The newest version of Bedrock Minecraft supports OpenXR and no longer uses the old Oculus Minecraft launcher App to run in VR. This worked for me:
Uninstall the Oculus Minecraft App and Minecraft itself.
Reboot.
Install Minecraft.
Start in VR mode by making a shortcut to "minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true".
@Johnny, can you give a more detailed step by step on how to make the shortcut? I'm having trouble figuring this out and would love the ability to play in VR again.
I've made a shortcut by right-clicking the desktop and adding the shortcut, it's just not launching in VR so I probably missed a step somewhere.
I created a Windows shortcut with "minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true" without the quotes as the target. And I just tried, it also works if you paste that address into a browser.
Having said that, it does still seem to be quite buggy in this mode:
The drawing distance is very low regardless of the settings.
Movement often stops responding to head gaze direction.
You can't use a gamepad to walk, only the Touch controllers.
I right-clicked the desktop, chose New>Shortcut, then entered minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true. It created a shortcut to the url on my desktop. Does that sound right? Then I put on my headset, launch the game using the new shortcut, but it still opens on desktop instead of the headset. I have a Rift S.
Thanks for the heads up about the bugs. I'm willing to deal with the bugginess as long as I can play in VR.
Sounds pretty much the same as what I'm doing. Maybe try another clean install of Minecraft with reboot. Install Minecraft from the Windows Store and don't install the Oculus Minecraft thing.
Also maybe check that all your Windows and GFX drivers are up to date.
Hi Johnny !
Thx for this tips.
I have try Uninstall, reboot, reinstall, and a lot af technical thinks..
Not working for me...
Since last patch... now minecraft crash again... and again.. and again...
May be in 4 year again it work ?
Seriously... OpenXR mode change nothing for me... crash again... my log say :
Nom de l’application défaillante Minecraft.Windows.exe, version : 1.16.200.2, horodatage : 0x5fc589ea |
So...
"Maybe try another clean install of Minecraft with reboot. Install Minecraft from the Windows Store and don't install the Oculus Minecraft thing.
Also maybe check that all your Windows and GFX drivers are up to date."
I did all of that first to no avail. Oh, well. Thanks for your help, anyway. I'm sure it will help others who've been wanting to play again.
its also affects 1.16.200
it happens for me im using an oculus quest with link pc a gtx 1660 super
i5 10th gen
when i load minecraft from the oculus software it crashes for me
Same issue here, When I connect to my Oculus Quest 2, with Oculus Link, I got in the Oculus's screen:
"checking for updates"
And then it closes immediately. I have tried to run Minecraft from the Oculus Store, and also run it first from the shortcut specify on the release notes: minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true
Running on Windows 10 (latest updates), and Nvidia 3080, Ryzen 5900x on Oculus Quest 2
Let me know if you need any more information,
Regards,
-
Luis
Chiming in to say I have the same issue using Oculus Link with a Quest 2 in latest version, whereas it worked a month ago. Game launches without any problems outside VR.
I've seen in my logs that minecraft VR was trying to load from steamVR for some reason.
I've unstilled steamVR, done a windows update and rebooted, it got it working for me.
Let me know if this fixes it for anyone.
Below is where you can find the logs, and the log that I was seeing as the issue.
FYI, you will need to show hidden files to find the logs.
C:\Users(your user)\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\openvr\logs

I found how to run Minecraft Bedrock in OpenXR using a Rift headset, or probably many other.
Now MC use OpenXR as default runtime.
The choice of the runtime is made system wise by a register key, that point to a manifest where is writed which runtime to use.
SteamVR, WMR and Oculus has its own manifest. And probably if you're unable to run MC in VR is because you've the wrong manifest registered.
So you need to write the path of the oculus openxr manifest modifying this register key, in case of Oculus:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1]
"ActiveRuntime"="c:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json"
This is considering you've installed Oculus client in the default c:\ folder, and you're using a 64bit so.
In case of WMR headset WMR has the default manifest in:
c;\windows\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json
Note. Unfortunatley Minecraft OpenXR right now is very buggy, the control are not optimal, left hand is not traced and in my system the framerate is locked at 60hz for no visible reason ,made it unpleasant to use.
Hi Carl Wooster,
Your idea worked for me.
Minecraft is running again.
I have uninstalled Steam completely.
Uninstalled Minecraft Windows 10 Edition.
And uninstalled Minecraft from the Oculus Store.
Then restarted the PC.
And reinstalled Minecraft from the Oculus Store.
And now it works again. Thanks Carl. 😃
The majority of my games are in Steam, so I'm nervous about messing them up if I uninstall Steam VR. So maybe I'll try Daws' idea of editing the registry, but the OpenXR version sounds a bit more problematic than I thought. Idk.
I wonder is it safe to reinstall SteamVR afterwards. Will the game continue launching properly? Guess there's only one way to find out...
That's great news Friedrich! Thanks for letting me know.
@Janyse - I have re installed SteamVR and Minecraft still works
Uninstalling SteamVR didn't work for me. Game launches in VR and I see 'Checking for Updates' then it immediately kicks me back to the desktop.
I had a WMR headset prior to the Rift S. I wonder if that's related to my problem. So I checked the registry, it still showed C:\WINDOWS\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json as the default. Changed it to the Oculus runtime, but that version still won't launch. (Oculus is installed to the default folder, though my games are not.)
And there's no Openvr folder in my Minecraft folder, so no logs.
To be sure the right manifest is selected, you can check OpenXR developements tools UWP app:
Probably you've already installed in your system.
It's usefull to see if the runtime is correclty up and running, there's also a simple 3d scene for testing.
The "system status" panel give you a detailed info about the selected runtime.
Pay attention as it's from Microsoft it warn you about the Mixed Reality is not selected, you can ignore it.
I'm getting an error, 'graphics device invalid' when trying the demo. The manifest seems to be correct, though. I'm at a loss.
[media][media]Hi everyone, me and carl wooster are friends IRL.. weve been working on this for a few days and have managed to crack it finally.. (carl more-so than me)
just to confirm i did everything carl mentioned in his previous comment to no prevail....
weve later realised that you need to have everything installed within the normal library folders for:
minecraft on oculus being...:
location: "C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software"
minecraft on windows 10. then once you enter/add this in windows registry editor (mine was missing) as a new "expandable string value" named: "ActiveRuntime" - location: "C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json" ..... minecraft should fingers crossed hopefully work for you guys! please comment or refer to image below for reference or guidance 🙂🙂🙂🙂
me and carl will probably feel a bit lost fixing ours now so feel free to shout and we will do our best with the info you give us to help you..
[media]@Curtis, I just checked and Oculus has the launcher installed in C:\Oculus Apps\Software\mojang-ab-minecraft-oculus-rift\.
If I'm understanding correctly, I just need to move the installation to C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software since I've already edited the registry...
try
C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software\Software\mojang-ab-minecraft-oculus-rift
software\software....
also i made a new library within this location and deleted previous libraries from the oculus store... try that also
I only needed to add the new library: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software. When I moved Minecraft to the new location, it automatically added the additional folders. Then I deleted the old location. Game still exits immediately after Checking for Updates. 😞
I'm going to try uninstall/reinstall again.
try creating your new library within oculus here : C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software
assign as default library...
uninstall minecraft oculus...
delete previous libraries...
reinstall minecraft into newly made library...
check reg editor for the files in my image above
try restarting also
But my default library is on the D drive. That's where all of my games are (except Minecraft.) I can't delete that library, I assume it would affect my installations. But I'll try temporarily making C the default.
ETA: Didn't work. I suspect your fix only helps the new bug caused by the most recent update. I haven't been able to launch the game in 6 months, way before this new update.
We shouldn't have to be solutioning this as paying customers. Mohjang needs to fix their VR implementation.
Unfortunately, VR customers are often overlooked because we make up such a small percentage of the gaming community. They honestly don't care about us.
Hi, Curits Lewis .
The way you wrote about changing the registry worked for me.
Before
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1]
"ActiveRuntime"="C:
Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\SteamVR
steamxr_win64.json"
After
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1]
"ActiveRuntime"="C:
Program Files\\Oculus\\Support\\oculus-runtime
oculus_openxr_64.json"
i wasn't able to get it to start through oculus so i ditched it and was able to start it through steam vr because minecraft now uses openxr
start steam vr
open a run prompt and put "minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true" into it
about a 10% chance it actually works
you can uninstall the oculus minecraft app if you want
For everyone who got it working by editing the registry, are you using a Rift S?
Hi,
My registry is correct, but MinecraftVR Bedrock not working for me.
Oculus installed in default directory of course.
Hardware : Rist S.
Thx.
I use oculus quest 2.
If this is the solution, then it does NOT work. It only allows Minecraft to finish loading, but VR still does not behave as it did prior to the shift to OpenXR... and so this new chain of programs between the Oculus and OpenXR/Minecraft still does not work. It now directs you to a different Oculus runtime .dll: LibOVRRT64_1.dll, which was last updated on 12/10/2020. However, Minecraft on Oculus never had to use this before. It used to be a beautiful, functional, and polished implementation that prevented motion sickness through stepped turning, ran at 90fps, and properly blurred the background when opening menus/chests. What we have now is absolute garbage.
HMD: Oculus Quest 2 (EDIT: using a link cable, not wireless virtual desktop)
System: RTX 2070 Super / Ryzen 5 3600 / 16GB RAM / Windows 10 2020H2 19042.685
Doing the registry edit to the oculus openXR library worked for me, but I only tested launching using the minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true shortcut.
It seems I am having the same issue as some other people where the game is at a fixed 60fps or something.
I uninstalled the oculus store version of minecraft and now am only using the windows 10 edition with that aforementioned shortcut.
While yes it does work, like Richard Johnson said it isn't polished at all, and worked a LOT better before the shift to openXR. Hopefully mojang or whoever handles the openXR implementation more or less fixes it sometime soon.
I am using the Quest 2 with the Link Cable and I am having the issue with the new update killing the Oculus version of Minecraft.
I was able to finally launch past checking for updates with "minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true" but I was not able to use my joysticks to walk or turn and it crashed after 15 seconds of being in a world.
With the Reg keys I have no experience.
I have the exact same issue using 3060ti, ryzen 5 3600 on Quest 2
The Registry work around sometimes allows me to open Minecraft if I use the shortcut discussed above, but only 1 out of 5 times it will open (normally crashes) and even if it does open with OpenXR it usually crashes within a few minutes
With the Oculus Link I just have the "Checking for Updates", followed by a black screen, and then the oculus link home screen as it crashes.
I bought Minecraft just to play it in VR, still looking for a fix
This is happening with me with a Valve Index. SteamVR is set to point the OpenXR runtime to SteamVR and MSFS (which also uses OpenXR) works. Just Minecraft seems to be broken.
When I launch SteamVR then launch Minecraft from the desktop shortcut, with the launch parameters, the game loads up and I see the main menu in my Index, then it crashes. It crashes 100% of the time and I can't seem to get it to work at all.
Same issue as Jfar_GI with Index on SteamVR while steamVR is my OpenXR platform. It launched fine, I see 1 frame of the nether login screen inside the index fine, hear the music shortly and it will instantly crash to desktop with no error
I just got A Rift S since I have a good PC and play Bedrock with my friends a lot, I haven't been able to get the VR version to launch once, just crash on checking updates. I've done the the fixes above, uninstalling & reinstalling Minecraft for Windows 10, Minecraft for Oculus, and Oculus itself. All of which are also on my C drive. I also did the fixes with RegEdit and creating a shortcut but because I haven't been able to have the game launch I don't have the UWP in my Oculus library either. When I try to launch it it still crashes instantly on the checking updates splash screen, but now it launches normal Minecraft on my desktop after it crashes. I imagine this is because I did the registry Change without having the UWP. But noting I've done has been able to get me a single Launch of the game. Im worried that after doing the registry changes and with how normal Minecraft is launching after every crash that I'm also keeping myself from getting that first launch, though i did try tens of times both before and after making the registry changes.
This was a big reason for me to get a headset. please someone help me.
Does anyone at Mojang monitor these threads? It would be nice if they could at least acknowledge that there is a bug and are considering possibly fixing it.
I have the same thing. I am using an Oculus Quest 2 with a link cable. I have the same issue as everyone else on this thread. The game boots, checks for updates, then crashes. When watching outside the headset, I don't get beyond the red "Mojang Studios" screen without the game crashing. Both the Windows 10 edition of Minecraft and the Oculus Store version of Minecraft are on my C: drive. It would be really nice to have any kind of information regarding this and if it is planned to be fixed. Vivecraft works fine for Java, but I play Bedrock with a lot of friends, and it would be nice to use VR with them.
I have the same problem. I was not able to fix it but I found some info that might help. I found the crash report and this error code
PROCESS_NAME: Minecraft.Windows.exe ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0x80000003 - {EXCEPTION} Breakpoint A breakpoint has been reached. EXCEPTION_CODE_STR: 80000003 EXCEPTION_PARAMETER1: 0000000000000000
This problem can occur if the application you’re trying to run isn’t up to date or if its installation is corrupted. I don't know if any of you will have the same problem but if you want to check the crash report you have to have WinDbg Preview installed to open the crash report and the file location is in Appdata/local/CrashDumps/ if any of you figure out how to fix mc vr with this info please comment the fix.
Both me and a friend of mine are having the same issues. We are both using Quest 2s and link cables. I would love to see even some acknowledgment that Mojang knows that this bug exists, just for the comfort that they're not blind to it.
I have owned the Rift S and now have a Quest 2. My friend also has a Quest 2. I play with the Link cable. Mine works but his has this behavior of crashing. I noticed my library has Minecraft and Minecraft UWP icons. His does not.
On his, I've reinstalled. I've installed the Java version. I've done all Windows and driver updates. Hope this information help.
Thanks for your patience while we continue to look into the issue. As the original issue here is quite old, could you please let us know any new steps to reproduce the problem?
Could you confirm that you are using the Bedrock version of Minecraft installed through the Windows Store, and that you only have one copy of the title installed?
Finally! Someone from Mojang is on the case!
I am using the bedrock version of minecraft purchased and installed from the Windows Store last week
On the Oculus app I have then installed their Minecraft app
I am using a Quest 2 with a link cable, connecting to my computer running a 3060ti and Ryzen 5 3600
Steps:
I connect my quest via link
I open the Minecraft app
A 360 view of a Minecraft world of the app launches with "Checking for Updates" on each 90 degree side of it
3 seconds later the screen goes black
The Oculus link menu re-opens
I try this again and again with the same crashes happening
Troubleshooting steps:
Factory reset my Quest 2
Switch my computer off and on
Uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft from the PC
Uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft from the Oculus Store
No matter what I do the same issue happens. And it seams that it has been happening to many other people (see all the comments above)
Hi. As for myself, I can confirm that I'm using the Windows 10 version of Minecraft installed through the Windows Store. When I first encountered this crash, the game was already installed before I tried it in VR. I've also tried uninstalling completely, then letting the Oculus launcher download the game.
Everyone seems to have slightly different issues. But the common symptoms are: The game launches in VR, and after checking for updates, it either shuts down abruptly or switches to 2D/Desktop. This happens whether launching the game through Oculus desktop or through VR in the headset.
On my system, the game switches to 2D mode if my registry points to the mixed reality manifest, but shuts down abruptly when it points to the Oculus manifest. I had a wmr headset previously; now using a Rift S.
@Ben, I did see a comment in the Oculus store where someone fixed their game by enabling Unknown Sources. That is what made his UWP icon appear.
Unfortunately, this did not help me since I already have it enabled. I even tried adding the UWP shortcut to the library myself.
I'm using the Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft, right from the Windows 10 store. I was previously in the RTX beta, but am currently opted out of any betas. I did just do a fresh install of MC Windows 10 Edition, same issue – immediate crashing after launching into my Valve Index, reproducible 100% of the time.
Is there even a VR team working on this or is the OpenXR implementation just an afterthought? Is this going to be abandonware? Not trying to be rude, but it seems to reliably crash for 100% of the people who try it, so I'm wondering how in the world something like this ever slipped past QA, if there even was QA for this...
I'm using Windows 10 Bedrock edition from windows Store.
Launching with Oculus launcher and "minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true" shortcut... Both crash after Red Splash screen.
I have try Alpha and standard edition of bedrock Minecraft.
My OpenXR registry :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1]
"ActiveRuntime"="C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json"
Minecrash crash at every test.
I have try to reinstall every part...
Oculus software
Minecraft from store
Change account
Windows new profile
Change graphic driver (newest)
I have try with Rift, Rift S, Quest linked
Thx for your help.
I'm using Windows 10 Bedrock edition from windows Store. Fresh install after reset of windows. Launching with Windows MR. I use the default interface or and with the OpenXR shortcut. Neither work. I have Lenovo Explorer goggles and Xbox BT controller. Worked perfectly until .200. I would also like to know how this obvious failure made it through QC. Maybe now that you are killing MC Earth you can focus on basics? Hope.
My two kids and I have each an Oculus Quest 2, I can confirm that Minecraft crashes right after opening and checking for updates on all headsets using bedrock Windows 10 edition, any solution to this issue?
Yes. I have been checking this daily.
I only have one copy of bedrock installed from the windows store.
I open steam VR, which is what Index uses for OpenXR,
I paste and run minecraft://mode/?OpenXR=true
the game opens fine, fully loads to the title screen (before the title screen UI appears).
in my index I see a single frame of the nether title screen and hear the music a short moment, then the game closes with no error, a straight close to desktop
+1 for Curtis and Carl's solution. My reg key was missing and putting their one in worked for me.
@Mark Symonds can you share how you made it work? so far is not working for a lot of people, so bummed about this.
I tried a clean install of Windows 10 and all the other software, and it did not help. Still the same issue as people above.
I am using a Oculus Quest 2 VR headset over Oculus Link to play PC games.
Windows 10 version 20H2 / build 19042.685
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: RTX 2070 Super
RAM: 16GB 3400MHz
Steps for recreation of the issue:
Reinstall windows after formatting drive
Install appropriate drivers for computer hardware
Download and install the Oculus software/store to use the Oculus Link
Install Minecraft Bedrock edition from the Microsoft store
Download the Minecraft launcher from the Oculus store
Connect Oculus Quest 2 over USB type C and enable Oculus Link
Go to my game library and attempt to launch Minecraft using the app downloaded from the Oculus store
The app then displays a VR view of "Checking for updates..." then after a few seconds, the app seemingly crashes or I get returned to the Oculus Link home. When I look on my PC, however, the game is started in 2D mode.
I then tried the OpenXR registry fix people above have mentioned, and it did somewhat work. I uninstalled the Minecraft launcher from the Oculus store AND the bedrock edition from the minecraft store. I applied the registry edit to point to the Oculus OpenXR json file, and then reinstalled first the windows store version of minecraft followed by the oculus store launcher. When I then went to launch the game from Oculus link, it stayed a bit longer on the "checking for updates" screen before turning completely black and then loading me into Minecraft in VR. I did not have to launch the game using the OpenXR shortcut people have mentioned earlier, and simply changing the registry value for OpenXR allowed the game to load when launching from the Oculus Link home.
It also might be worthwhile to mention that I had not installed Steam or SteamVR at all when I clean installed windows 10, just the oculus store and minecraft bedrock from the windows store.
While I was able to get into the game after applying the registry fix, there were a few issues I was having. Looking around normally with the headset in VR was smooth, but as soon as I had to use the thumbsticks to move around or look around the world I was testing with, the game started stuttering really bad.
Hey, @Mojang and @everyone...Can you please explain how a registry "fix" for Oculus is the answer when other people (oh, say like me) don't use Oculus anything for Minecraft VR?
@Gerod
If you already know what the registry is, this should be easy to explain. Basically, there are a few different ways to handle VR applications, and Minecraft recently added support for the "OpenXR" runtime. Some people's registries haven't updated or are pointing to the wrong area for their specific headset. Some people were saying theirs were pointing to a Windows Mixed Reality runtime when they didn't have that kind of headset. So what you basically do is tell your system where the correct runtime is for VR; and for the case of Oculus, their runtime came with their game store program. I would assume it's a similar fix for SteamVR. Again, this is an assumption, but the Oculus store version of "Minecraft" seemed to be some sort of adapter between Minecraft's previous runtime and the runtime Oculus uses, which is my guess as to why it is broken now but some people can get it to run without the Oculus store version installed.
But I do not have Oculus. I do not have Steam. I have vanilla Windows 10, Microsoft store Mincraft, enabled Windows MR, and a lenovo explorer headset. See my video. What registry fix works for me when I do not have the hardware or software registered?
@Gerod
Minecraft VR was first developed for Windows Mixed Reality, so it should still be supported, but seeing your previous posts, you probably just have to find the default Windows MR runtime.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json should the the location
I got mine working by going to Setting>General>Turn on Unknown Sources. It worked for me.
This is still and issue for me, and happens 100%. I have tried a fresh install of windows, MC and oculus to no avail. Using the quest 2 and have tried with a quest 1. PC has a ryzen 5 3600 and RX590. Have also tried numerous AMD drivers with no success. Crashes every single time, has anyone found a reliable solution?
My reg has the value of AciveRuntime already set to C:\WINDOWS\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json
This is still happening for me.
Created an account just to let folks following thread know -
All I had to do was create the registry key noted above, and then launch Minecraft from inside Oculus Link. It appeared to crash (as it had before), but then after Minecraft for Windows 10 loaded onto my desktop, it re-appeared on the Oculus Quest 2.
[media]For any tech savvy folks, you can troubleshoot by downloading 'WinDbg' off of the MSFT store and analyzing the *.dmp files located in C:\Users(username)\AppData\Local\CrashDumps\
It's possible that what ended up 'fixing' it for me was installing Vivecraft and launching that. It worked fine, but I still wanted the Windows 10 version to work, so I went back after installing Vivecraft and it strangely worked. Possible that there are some dependencies that are installed or configured when Vivecraft is launched.
Allright boys i found the Solution
I'm sry for the bad english im to excited to play the game now
Step-1 Download Windows Mixed Reality openxr in the Microsoft store
Step-2 Install and set it to default after installing
Step-3 deinstall minecraft completely in windows and oculus restart pc and reinstall minecraft
Step-4 Change the activeruntime setting in Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\openxr\1
to C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json if you have installed oculus on C:\
Step-5 Start the game in Oculus and check if it works It may seem like it doesnt work but it will say loading wait until its loaded may take a couple seconds and enjoy
Thats the exact thing i did i dont know if the restart and deinstalling is necessary but i did it anyways. good luck i hope i could help you.
This issue seems so wide spread and it's an insta crash on startup. So either the devs somehow can't reproduce (which is unlikely) or vr support isn't a priority to mojang. I find it weird that they overhauled vr support with openxr but shipped it in a obviously broken state. It's like they want people to use Vivecraft (or do some random registry edits) over their implementation...
Clearly Mojang dosen't care. It's going into the 3rd month and no fix. And all you Oculus folks can put a cork in the reg fix junk...it doesn't work for everyone and certainly not for people WITHOUT OCULUS *yes, that is possible in 2021.
Same issue here on brand new oculus quest 2 😞
3 months with no fix is pretty atrocious. Literally unplayable
I am having the same issue - quest 1
I'm also hitting this issue. I'm on a Samsung Odyssey HMD, freshly installed Minecraft (non-beta) from the Windows Store, latest nVidia drivers, and Windows Update fully up to date.
Note that I'm NOT using oculus. This is happening with a WMR device, launching Minecraft from the pins panel in the cliffhouse.
@Gerod and @jason, Same boat as you. I too have a Samsung HMD Odyssey+, fully updated Windows, latest nVidia drivers, even the OpenXR runtime is installed and active with the right registry key. Even the demo scene in OpenXR Developer Tools works. Seems only those with Oculus are able to bypass the issue but even then the experience for them is still buggy so not even worth going through the steps they took.
Hopefully Mojang is planning to fix this in the 1.16.210 patch.
To everyone saying it's been 3 months, try 7. I've been waiting for a solution since last summer, right after I bought my headset. That's around the time this bug started affecting Rift S headsets. Now, it's widespread and I'm hoping that Mojang will finally take it seriously since it's getting more attention.
Actually, I've been saying all along there are TWO different issues here. One issue related to the Oculus store for those Facebook fanboys in the crowd that DOES seem to have been much older (as THIS thread indicates) and this new one which seems to have nothing to do with Oculus but rather OpenXR as of 1.16.200. Mojang is just to weak minded to read all the threads and provide useful, insightful, meaningful, applicable responses to each issue.
I agree. Just look at Werner I, the OPs, comments throughout this thread. His issue dates back over 4 years ago. But Mojang keeps classifying recent issues as duplicate as if they are all related when they're not, just because the title mentions "VR". Each issue since the start of this thread 4 years ago covers different issues from different versions of the game. Just look at his last comment, Aug 19, 2019. The issue could be solved quicker if whoever at Mojang is moderating this thread actually reads the info provided and compares it to the last known issue involving VR instead of just lazily applying "duplicate" status. Or at least respond with a progress update so we won't continue making assumptions about their negligence and lose our support.
EDIT: I also want to add that what makes this issue very different from the past issues since before Dec. 8, 2020 is that now OpenXR is involved. I don't know anything about coding or whatever but I'm pretty sure the issue currently has to do with how Minecraft VR communicates with OpenXR. Maybe OpenXR is rejecting Minecraft VR another way besides anything that has to do the the registry key. I dunno but Mojang shouldn't just leave us on our own to figure this out.
Due to the obvious lack of communication from Mojang on this card I recommend everyone share this issue with others and ask them to vote for it and to tweet this issue out to any twitter handles you see fit. It seems being loud is the only way to get a response on this as we are all clearly talking to a wall in these comments.
I tried the changing of the registry and it still does not work.
Since OpenXR is being lumped into this ticket (despite it not existing at the time this ticket was submit), I'll say my game is instant crashing. Within half a second.
Steam's recommended way to launch the game is using a url to create a shortcut. And you can't add that shortcut as a Non-Steam game and setting it as a VR Game to give the ability to launch while you're in the SteamVR home.
OK.. So Mojang keeps merging in the new topics about OpenXR having issues with a 100% unrelated 5 year old topic from 2016. Do they really think these are the same issues at all?
can you guys PLEASE FIX THIS without making me wait another 5 years?! I have an Oculus Quest 2 that I got for my birthday after Christmas with Link cable and state of the art (it's a year old now) gaming computer that is VR capable. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall MC VR as well as doing same for Oculus suite but to no surprise no change...MC still says "checking for updates" then crashes back to Oculus home no matter what I try to do to fix it. this needs to be fixed I PAID for this and it doesn't work please fix this!
btw I use Windows 10 x64 with all the latest updates
I just looked up at the top of this issue and it says it affects v1.16.x. does this mean there is a newer version for MC VR? Oculus game screen (containing game details and play button) says 1.15 with no way to update. please confirm or verify - very confused!
i fixed this for me by installing the nvidia experience software and drivers from their website. windows previously claimed that i had the most recent drivers, you shouldn't trust that statement.
i have a gaming laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050
I tried what you suggested but no change still crashes
Requires some hacks to work properly:
1. You need to activate the oculus openxr runtime modifying this register key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1]
"ActiveRuntime"="c:\"Program Files"\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime
oculus_openxr_64.json"
This is considering you've installed Oculus client in the default c:\ folder, and you're using a 64bit so.
2. You should set "gfx_vsync" to "0" in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftpe\options.txt
to get unlocked FPS.
Muller/Mojang, I know this is hard but please try to understand that Oculus fixes DO NOT DO A THING for Windows Mixed Reality. As I've said, there are two problems here. One that seems to affect the Oculus runtime and is fixed (or might be? - gosh, if we had two different threads for two DIFFERENT PROBLEMS that might help clarify the situation) by changing OpenXRs registry so that the Oculus version of Minecraft can use OpenXR. There is another. The fact that Windows MR and NON-Oculus, Microsoft store Minecraft VR support DOES NOT WORK. At all. Broken.
Mojang, if you now understand the difference, grab yourself a juicebox for a job well done and GO FIX IT!
The Oculus launcher for Minecraft has a new update. Still crashes for me, but perhaps it'll help someone else.
This is still an issue. I have uninstalled it in oculus and also windows and then reinstalled both. after doing so I was able to get it to actually load in oculus but after hitting confirm twice i get to the third and final confirm to actually launch the game and it then crashes showing an error message that will be link here. I've tried launching the game on my desktop before launching it in oculus and it wouldn't even launch it in oculus so that's not a remedy. and my friend who also has oculus was able to play and is still able to play without issue so very confused as to why this will not work for me
[media][media]
All, I spent all morning with Microsoft tech support. I was frustrated that even after latest windows Feb 2021 KBs vr still would not work since Mincraft 1.16.200 in Dec 2020. We used the latest windows iso to level-set the system. MC still crashed to MR portal on load. So we downloaded a thing called "Driver Booster v8" and it updated several out of date drivers. Still didn't work. So we uninsalled openvr, the mr portal, dec tools, and minecraft. Restart pc. Unplug vr headset (Lenovo Explorer) usb/hdmi. Restart pc. We removed the xbox BT controler and all audio devices. Pluged the headset usb/hdmi back in. Reinstalled MR portal once headset was detected. Manually updated mixed reality device driver to whatever was already available to click. Repaired controler. Launched game. Still nothing. I'll keep you posted if anything ends up working.
before the recent update It was just crashing similar to everyone else and after the recent update
it would say
welcome to the minecraft oculus launcher
A to confirm B to cancel (it says this every new time you press A so I will not be mentioning it)
after hitting A it will say update windows to 1809 and obtain minecraft(windows is up to date and I have minecraft) , or the trial, from the windows 10 store
(2) set the setting-> general ->unknown sources swich to [on] in the oculus app(done)
[confirm] to play VR minecraft, or cancel to exit
wile you are seeing this all in vr this is what window is up on the desktop
[media]after hitting a your screen in vr will become wavy and have the loading symbol in the corner
wile on the desktop this will apear
[media]
and also this
[media]
as far as I know there is no good solution when you click ok on the error it will instantly close all the windows
let us try to find some similarity between all our issues like
1 do we all use nvidia or amd G.P.U.s?
2 do we all have oculus headsets
3 do we all have amd or intell cpus?
we should be able to see similaritys with a large enough database
we will be able to diagnose if it is a driver or something else
I am using nvidia rtx 2080 super
with an amd ryzen 5 1400
and an oculus quest 1
Daniel, fine idea but CPU and GPU won't be the issues. We already know these are two dissimilar issues. We know the issues started with .200 and the introduction of OpenXR. Different headsets = different runtimes (Oculus vs WMR). That's the difference. The problem is a slovenly Mojang.
I have a used Dell Optiplex 3060 slim (i5 with only on-board Intel UHD 630) which i got specifically to play minecraft VR. I picked up a used Lenovo Explorer headset and I use Windows Mixed Reality. My entire setup worked fine and cost less than just the Oculus headsets. It worked great until December and 1.16.200.
GPU: No external GPU (on board HUD 630)
Headset: No Oculus. Lenovo Explorer for WMR
CPU: Intel.
I am also having this issue. I've included images of the error as well as close-ups of the titles of the three relevant windows.
[media]This is the crux of the issue which the devs seem unwilling to address. I was hoping for a quick fix but seeing 138 comments where the only team responses where vague and clearly had failed to read the prior comments... Now I guess I'm not expecting much. Such a pity because this was one of the things I was looking forward to most. And it seems like just a boot load error which really shouldn't be that challenging for them to fix... They just have not tried. I can run Google Earth VR with no trouble but somehow Minecraft VR is having this ongoing problem? It's so unfortunate and disappointing.
I've tried reinstalling both the Windows 10 Minecraft edition and the Minecraft VR launcher from Oculus. I've also reinstalled Oculus (and my games...), all to no avail.
I am using an Alienware Aurora R11
with a Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080
and an i7
and an Oculus Quest 2.
I hope that someone interested in actually helping appears from the staff.
[media][media][media][media][media]so far I have noticed that it is mostly nvidia R.T.X. cards what are the chances of it there being 3/4 people so far having R.T.X. perple having R.T.X. we should try G.T.X. drivers I also noticed the exact beta that it stopped working was the R.T.X. beta I will keep you updated if the G.T.X. drivers work I am not saying this is likely the solution but anything is worth a try now after this I think the next step is reinstalling windows 10
I also have RTX GPU but I see Microsoft didn't like the truth because my comment has been removed! the truth hurts doesn't it Microsoft?! I should've guessed that you would remove a comment that was just telling it like it is!
anyway I have an Alienware m15 R2 (it WAS an R1 but now since the most recent update for some reason now it's R2 and Idk how) with RTX 2060 16GB RAM i7 9th Gen Windows 10 x64 with latest drivers and I use an Oculus Quest 2 headset with Link cable
I have tried reinstalling everything but to no avail. I've grown tired of this BS and considering demanding a refund and moving onto the another game that DOES work! what a shame Microsoft but I'm not surprised you don't have the best track record for fixing things when they break! FIX THIS OR I WILL DEMAND A REFUND! no more half fixes or screwing around with the OS when it's not going to work especially with a computer in excess of $3k! just fix the issue how hard is that?! my dad had to pay to have my computer repaired because of your damn supposed "fixes"! it's NOT the os and I think the person that commented before me is right...now that I think of it, all these issues seem to have a pattern regarding RTX GPUs! some people have reported fixing the issue by either installing software or updating their drivers BUT they did NOT have RTX GPUs!
maybe if others start thinking the same way they might realize the loss of business and fix the damn issue!
I can't figure out how to get pre rtx drivers installed it is not letting me go before a certain version which is after rtx if anyone else can that would be helpful so I would say our best hope is going to an older driver cause it has something to do with rtx I am convinced of that unfortunately even if that works we will not be able to play minecraft rtx + vr ): because we will have an older driver until we get this fixed we will just have to mod Minecraft java to play in vr
I for one do not believe this is an RTX issue. I am using a Geforce GTX 970 and get the filesystem error
hmm interesting but still an nvidia card, has anyone noticed any issue before the rtx beta?.
I wanted to share that my issue was due to the default openxr being pointed at steam vs the oculus runtime. Following the steps below with the latest versions of all software fixed my issue. I was getting the file system error when launching Minecraft.
Why is this issue still a thing? It’s been here for ages now
I wish everyone would stop saying that it works by reg hacking the pointer to the "correct" runtime for Oculus. BL: this is a hard-broke bug for Windows Mixed Reality. I don't care about the rest (Steam/Oculus) because that's not what is broken. Not my fault that Mojang keeps grouping us together. Happy for every Facebook fan-boy out there who loves to use Rift but vanilla Minecraft worked fine in vanilla WMR until the 1.16.200 failed update. This is the bug that has no fix.
Thank you, @Gerod.
For new commenters, please at least take the time to search through the entire thread before posting your Steam/Oculus registry key fixes so that you'll realize you're only repeating what a dozen other commenters have already posted. This bug affects all Windows 10 VR users so it's not just an Steam/Oculus bug. Mojang can't seem to figure that out and I think the more you post your so-called "fixes" the less likely someone from Mojang will respond so consider this a disclaimer.
@Gerod @Danny,
While I agree this is has become the catch all bucket my challenge was bugs are getting closed and referenced to this as duplicate. When I read the description of the issue I didn't see that this was called out as a Rift specific bug just that when launching the VR version it opens and then it will crash. This was 100% my problem. My goal was not to start an online battle but I am actually interested the scope of this issue. What would be interesting would be for each person to post the error and run a collection program showing headset, Minecraft Version, openXR version, Steam Version, Graphics Driver Version, windows build version. I would also like to understand how to get a crash dump posted so real clarity for the developers can be provided. As you stated if you gathered some real technical details you could maybe break this into 1-5 problems and then start to fix each of them. It's frustrating that VR in Minecraft is really cool but so many bugs are stopping the end user from enjoying it.
Everyone keeps saying the fix is to switch off of steam VR as the OpenXR source, but that makes 0 sense because...
1: this won't help anyone not using oculus, such as an index, vive or any other non WMR or oculus HMD.
2: There is no reason why Oculus should not work on SteamVR for OpenXR
All of these registry "fixes" are just fixing a symptom and not the actual cause. something with the current version of minecraft has a lot of issues with OpenXR in general, and that needs to be fixed. the reason why this whole thread is a huge mess of many different looking issues is because all of these issues probably have 1 root cause, which is minecraft bedrock having really bad compatibility with OpenXR, which Mojang needs to fix.
☝This
Still exists in 1.16.210
Can anyone else confirm this is true. I haven't had a chance to download. But it's not mentioned in the release notes.
Confirmed. It's still balls in 1.16.210. 😞
Anyone interested in joining a class action lawsuit for false advertising? Can everyone still unable to get VR to work after 1.16.210 and 4 months of complaining repost? Need a recount of affected, their headset brand/model and platform (WMR, Oculus, Steam)
Going on 4 months. 4 updates. And still Mojang refuses to even ACKNOWLEDGE that the issue exists. I'm paying for a game and a realm I cannot use with a computer I purchased only 2 months before for the explicit purpose to continue to play Minecraft in VR after Mojang canceled my Gear VR option. MOJANG!!!
I'm from Canada but yes I will join you because I did the same damn thing for the same reason only to find that as soon as I purchased the equipment the game did not work and still doesn't so yes I think this is bs and will definitely join you in the 'suit Gerod! they should have had this fixed months ago but all they're doing is giving us crappy so called "fixes" causes us to **** around with multi thousand dollar equipment that could possibly void the warranty if it self destructs as a result of the tampering!
MOJANG GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT AND GET THIS FIXED WITHOUT TRYING TO GET US TO VOID ANY WARRANTIES! THIS IS BS AND YOU KNOW IT! DO YOUR DAMN JOB THAT'S WHAT MOST OF US ARE PAYING FOR!
Anyone try the beta program?
21/03/21 - I have this issue, too, and have done since I bought my VR headset about a month ago. There is no fix and I cannot play Minecraft in VR.
[media]A user on reddit was somehow able to get the Minecraft to load into vr (via openxr) using Index. They were able to load a world just fine but were unable to get the index controllers to work (only keyboard and mouse)
https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/maynh3/minecraft_vr_index_controls/
Odd. It boots now, but crashes while loading, no error however. Ill do some peeking file wise.
From what I have been seeing, it didn't work even to this extent until steamvr updated. Possibly something in steamvr is causing incompatibility?
Ok, so, after observing the crash dump a little, it seems to "encounter a breakpoint" at this integer, here is the modules.

Ignore those upper comments, it is working now in beta 1.16.230.50. Only problem, dunno if this is just me, but it seems that the versions vr mode might have a memory leak? Maybe look into it
Can confirm that beta 1.16.230.50 is able to load minecraft in vr on index (steam vr beta 1.17.2, latest version of windows). Pretty sure Inventor156 is right in that there is some sort of memory leak as the game hangs consistently after being open for 2-3 minutes (regardless if you load a world or just sit on the main menu screen). Also I can confirm that index controllers do not work at all (defaults to keyboard and mouse). Opening the steam vr controller menu does nothing. Opening the legacy steam vr binding ui lets me mess around with stuff but minecraft hangs before I am able to get anything done.
I just want to say that I thought I would never see the day where this shit didn't instant crash to desktop. But now I can load the game and have it hang after 2 mins. At the current pace we should be able to play this game in vr sometime in the next 2-3 years!! How exciting! /s
Also I DO NOT recommend joining the beta and trying vr in the current state. The hang that is currently happening is really bad as it causes steam vr to get stuck and I thought I was going to have to force shutdown my computer it froze for so long.
That only happens if your computer is using enough memory, and if the memory leak takes the rest of the free memory it will crash your pc.
I had high hopes, but the beta still does not work for me. Rift S. The game no longer shuts down, but it launches on the desktop with a black screen.
I'm so tired.

I confirm beta 1.16.230.52 launched via windows MR clifhouse goes to black screen. You can hear music of the main screen but no image. Also, multiple reloads does not always play music. There is always a black screen now, no crash to launcher ...I guess we call that progress?
Can anyone confirm if 1.16.220 fixed our VR issues? I apparently cannot leave the beta (another problem) so I cannot test the release. Feedback?
An update released today, 1.16.220, that fixes being able to load the game on Index/steam VR. it now loads to the title screen, but controllers do not seem to work at all. so it's still many levels of messed up atm. at least it loads though!
No fix for WMR. But it no longer crashes. Just black screen.
You know what? I'm done. I think I'm just gonna buy the Java Edition and get Vivecraft. Peeps say the VR experience is miles better anyway. Besides, I'm bored with Bedrock as a whole. I wanna play on some sick mods, with cool shaders and resource packs and junk and stuff and whatever.
Anyone know if today's beta fixes this yet?
Still broken.
it seems to be fixed for me in 1.16.221 playing in steam vr via virtual desktop on an oculus quest 1 the controlers also seem to be working fine for me but I am not sure about anyone else
The most recent update has fixed the issue for me at least. I decided to re-try using the Bedrock edition of Minecraft for VR since oculus launched Air Link, and after reinstalling the Oculus PC software and the Oculus store Minecraft launcher thing, the game launched properly. One thing I did notice was that the Oculus store Minecraft launcher closed itself shortly after opening, but then Minecraft UWP loaded and worked flawlessly.
I have a 64GB model of the Quest 2 headset, and as mentioned I was using Air Link.
PC Specs:
Ryzen 5 3600
16GB DDR4 3400 MHz RAM
RTX 2070 Super GPU
I don't have the windows 10 version on hand, but if enough people are curious, I can edit this comment with the version numbers for the Quest 2 system update version, Oculus PC app version, windows 10 version and stuff.
So I am now able to get to the title screen (using valve index + steamVR), but I can't seem to click on anything. Anyone have more luck with this or suggestions for getting it to recognize index knuckles controllers?
Just out of curiosity Logan, does it work for you with a generic controller, like an Xbox controller? If so, that would lead me to believe it's an issue with how SteamVR and Minecraft UWP communicate in regards to the knuckles. The regular Oculus controllers worked fine for me so I don't know if it's because they're knuckles or if the game is having issues with outside-in tracking
Evan,
Yes! I was able to get into the game using a xBox controller. Sadly it only ran for about a minute before using up all 8GB of the memory on my computer and then crashing. So apparently there's a memory leak somewhere.
When I tested Minecraft for myself, I didn't run it long enough to determine if there was a memory leak, but after reading some other comments, I might test again and monitor memory usage.
Also since an Xbox controller seems to be working for you, I do believe that the issue with knuckles is related to how Steam handles/adapts the controllers for Minecraft. Sorry I can't offer much more insight but at least for now an Xbox controller will work, assuming they fix that memory leak.
*EDIT*
My minecraft version is v1.16.221
Windows 10 Version 20H2 build number 19042.685
Oculus app version 28.0.0.222.469
I did not observe a memory leak or any increased memory usage while leaving me headset running and Minecraft VR streaming over Air Link.
Please STOP saying that this is somehow fixed. This is still a major issue and at the core the comments we are trying to get mojang to pay attention to is BEDROCK VR WILL NOT WORK IN WINDOWS MIXED REALITY! Cheers.
Tried this again..... 2 years now since i've been able to play in VR.....
Anyways, I corrected my OpenXR setting in the windows registry. Reinstalled Minecraft etc.... Launch Minecraft in Oculus, get a couple of prompts asking me to press A. Then Minecraft crashes.... PATHETIC.....
Actually this bug was first reported back in 2016!!! Get it together Mohjang and fix this. 5 years!!!
@Gerod, you need to calm down and stop taking your frustrations out on the wrong people. If the game is working for some users, there's nothing wrong with them saying so.
And the issue is that Bedrock isn't working for multiple headsets, not just mixed reality and everyone's experiences are not the same.
@Evan, the memory leak occurs when launching the game via desktop shortcut and Steam VR. I tried it with the link cable and Air link and it crashed each time with about 27GB RAM usage.
It sounds like you were able to launch the game normally through the Oculus library? Maybe that's how you avoided the memory problem. I have yet to make that happen; launching through the library while using the Oculus manifest results in the game running on the desktop only. Launching through the openxr shortcut and Steam is the only way I can get the game to run but then it shuts down after maxing out my RAM.
The fact that an entire gamemode is broken for everyone, and that this bug hasn't even been assigned to anyone, is beyond absurd. Mojang, please? If a moderator can see this, can someone please follow up with whoever is in charge of the VR integration? This is getting ridiculous.
@christofin keep in mind not everyone own a VR headset. Its a very small percent of people. Steam Hardware Survey only shows 2.2% of the steam user have a VR headset. Within that 2% the most popular VR headset is Oculus with 58% of Steam VR and Valve index with 16%.
Minecraft may not fix this bug right away since its cost money to fix bugs and VR is a very small portion of the community that not one cares about.
If you really want Mojang attention on fixing the bug try to get a social movement or get someone on YT like silentwhisper to blast the bug.
@Janyse
Sorry for the delayed reply. I was able to launch Minecraft through the Oculus Library w/ the official app and that is what I used when I tested it.
If your Minecraft VR opens and doesn't crash while launching the game and lets you play for a few minutes until the memory leak crashes your game please check out MCPE-128562 .
Edit: I Added a video of the Memory Leak Crashing the game. Hopefully this will help speed up the process.

I finally found a workaround that works for me. I posted it in a reply on Reddit; will repost here in case it might help someone.
Basically, what I had to do is make a new Windows profile. It's an administrator profile, and all I did was switch over to it, launch the Oculus desktop software, then choose a library location, which I kept at default. Installed Minecraft in Oculus, Installed Minecraft in Oculus store... It works.
So for anyone who's already tried the registry fixes, etc. try launching the game with a different profile.
Now, I did run into a different bug that was preventing me from choosing the library location when launching the Oculus software. A registry key was missing: HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Oculus VR, LLC\Oculus\Libraries.
https://oculus.uservoice.com/forums/918556-oculus-rift-s-and-rift/suggestions/39267736--bug-first-start-of-oculus-software-with-an-addit
So bottom line, something is wrong with my Windows profile which I can probably fix by reinstalling Windows. But that would take me a very long time and I have too much to lose, so making a new profile was the next best thing. And after getting the game working, I was able to switch back to my own profile and it still works.
just wondering if there are any plans to re enable vr support for this game
Still unplayable on the Index. Is this ever going to get looked at? This is very frustrating.
Finally !!
After Years !!!
I have migred Windows 10 to Windows 11 (without any reinstall)...
Launch Occulus and every games works like a charm... but Minecraft VR continue to crash at launding
Minecraft without occulus work too... without any problems (RTX too)
I uninstall Minecraft Beta Windows 10 edition... and install standard edition.
But now... Gaming Services doesn't work...
So, with powershell (admin mode)
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
And reinstall Gaming Services
Reboot
Open Windows Settings app.
Navigate to System > Apps & features.
Click on the Minecraft Windows 10 (Bedrock) app to see Advanced options link.
Click Advanced options link to open "Storage usage and app reset" page
Click the Repair button (Repair !!)
And... miracle !!
Minecraft VR Work... after years and years !!
Need to configure commands because it's not easy to use, but working with Xbox and occulus controlers
I hope it help...
(If need... Repair too "Windows Store" with same Repair button)
Thx !
Nope. Almost 18 months. Still broken for WMR
This also occurs when using any headset on SteamVR 1.23.7 (Build ID: 1659988962) on the Release channel with Minecraft version 1.19.20
I opened it using Virtual Desktop on my Oculus Quest 2 on v49 and it worked! All though it made me extremely tall in game idk why. Other than that it worked! (With SteamVR).
We believe the issue originally described in this report has been fixed in a past update. As such Mojang has no way to reproduce the issue currently. If you are still experiencing Minecraft VR crashing at the loading screen in the current version, please make a new report and include details about your device.
Just making sure, did you try the vorbis.acm fix? See the comments here: https://m.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4y06bb/solution_for_minecraft_vr_launch_problems/d6nf8yb
Please post back to let us know if it did or didn't work.
