This issue is still on 1.11 and 1.11.1 on the iPhone at least. I use my custom skin and it keeps changing back to Steve, Alex or a skin from a skin pack that I use on my Xbox. Please fix this soon it’s pretty annoying…

I'm now having this issue, but with the new Minecraft Earth skin. After I equipped it and then switched back to my custom skin, every time I launch the game my skin reverts back to the Earth skin.

Can we not have a direct answer regarding the status of this issue. Will it be fixed? - Is it an issue regarding our end? - Will it be corrected in the next MC update? .. I mean some info on the matter would be nice instead of empty responses and vouge answers.

Each time I load the game my skin is reset to Alex or Steve.

If I choose my custom skin again I can play in Game once.

But if I exit the world and join another I'm reset back to either Steve or Alex depending on what Bedrock fancies at the time.

It never affected me before 1.12. Now it does. I use a custom skin file on my hard drive, but on initially loading the game, for a few seconds the skin area displays a rolling bar animation that I think of as "accessing the network". Then it gives me the Steve or Alex skin. If I change it from the Pause menu, it stays set on the main menu, but when I exit and reload the game it loses it again.

Remove this stupid feature limiting the use of custom skins. It’s caused nothing but issues and now is completely broken in 1.12.

Confirming this issue here on Windows 10 1.12.0 as well, it seems the latest update has made this bug worse and now it's seriously annoying.

I'm having similar issue from 1.11. in my case, not steve or alex, resetting to skin I got from marketplace.

If I change my skin to my custom skin, it returns to marketplace skin everytime I restart game. I'm on Win 10 version.

I get this bug on xbox on beta 1.13.0.2 (it resets to either steve or alex)

Affects Bedrock 1.120 on LG Q6 Android 8.1 for non-marketplace skins. Resets back to Steve or Alex after exiting and restarting the game or after game crash. Extremely annoying. Also labels skins as being limited usage.

Has same issue with start skin an loading either Steve or Alex skin making me have to reselect my skin but why is it limited to non cross plateform? Also the device im on is A LG Stylus 3plus an sometimes I use a LG Stylus 2 both have same issue as every one else so bug isnt limited to just specific devices or systems please fix.

"Limited usage" existed on 1.11.x and was intentional for manually-applied skins from a file on the device itself.

I've noticed this as well, as I use a custom character skins, some I've created myself. From what I can tell, it lists my skins as "limited usage" though this never seemed to be be an issue in past versions, even letting me use them in realms. It will let me use the skin ingame, but once I log off, it resets to the default.

Confirmed on 1.12.0.24 on Windows 10 update 1903. The skin only changes when the app is completely restarted. If the client remains open, the skin will never reset, even when crashing out of a realm due to AFK.

Not sure if it is relevant but I mostly play in a realm. My kids play in the same realm (I'm the owner) and use a lot of custom skins, but they do not seem to have this problem. My iPad crashes/freezes frequently so it might be because I am killing the app and restarting almost every time I come into the game.

This also happens to me too, when ever I relaunch the Minecraft app it sets my skin to a default, is mojang going to fix this or not?

The reason this is happening with me is because the game says that my skin is not available on that platform

Strangely, on our Realm with 15 active members, this is only happening to one player consistently. His preferred skin pack is from the Microsoft store, bought via MC, yet every time he logs in, he comes in as either Alex or Steve and he has no "recent" skins in his recent folder. He plays on Xbox, as do the majority of our members. We are up to date with 1.12.0 and play with Chroma Hills updated texture pack.

Hello - This is happening to me as well. I am reset to "Steve" if I close and reopen the game after an extended period of time. For instance, if I close and re-open the game after 5 minutes or so, my custom skin will still be active. However, a longer delay between closing and re-opening resets my skin. I haven't tracked the delay thoroughly but a rough estimate would be 30 minutes to one hour delay is enough to reset the skin. 

I play on iPad, v. 1.12.0. My husband, on the other hand, has not experienced this issue and we have been playing a mixture of Realms and custom worlds for a couple of weeks together. He plays on a Windows 10 PC, Minecraft version 1.14.4. 

This is happening to me as well. I play on Android 8.0, and my Minecraft version is 1.12.0.

I have this too, as do both of my sons one of which plays from a separate Xbox1S one on my system.

It is INCREDIBLY frustrating because it also doesn't save my recent skins so I must follow all these steps EACH time...go into the marketplace and hit skins category, hit Y to search, type "teen" to search, select the "teen fashion" skin pack that has the free "Alison" skin, select that, confirm, exit to main menu then I can FINALLY start.

What a pain right?! It also doesn't save the legacy skin pack Alex in a dress skin-I tried that thinking it had something to do with it being a free skin from the marketplace buuuut nope. Nor the paid for skins I have. It randomly will save a few things to my recent skins but it's not consistent! I cannot get it to work in any consistent manner or I would just use the skin it DID save however Steve is always there taking up a recent slot, and most saved aren't female skins, only male which I don't want to play as lol.

FWIW; I tried to search for this couldn't find this by searching "skin" so I made a new report and they closed it as resolved/merged it with this one (provided me a link to this)

@ Jammie C: Resolving a bug as a "duplicate" of another bug is standard software engineering practice. If you look at the "resolved" duplicate bugs here, you can see that they have "Resolution" set to "Duplicate", and that they link back to this bug - a bug that's still "Open". All this says is that multiple bugs were opened for the same issue, and somebody behind the scenes is trying to connect the dots between all these bugs and let people know which bug is being used to track the issue going forward. As a developer goes through the process of fixing this bug, it's a lot easier and less messy to update 1 central bug with notes than to find all 50+ duplicate bugs and add comments to all of them as one-offs. Plus when engineers and management see that one bug has a bazillion duplicates, it's a pretty clear signal that lots of people are discovering the issue independently - meaning that higher priority should be given to this bug.

That being said, I can see how these patterns might not be obvious to people who haven't worked in software engineering before. Since this is a public-facing website it might make sense to rethink the UI a bit and make it easier for everyone to understand the intent behind resolving a bug as "duplicate". This probably isn't high priority for anyone, though.

@Ceyla that makes sense and I appreciate the insight! I figured that if it was marked resolved it'd be discounted ENTIRELY by the team working on things, and they'd only see the singular report left, leading them to believe the issue is resolved not needing their attention

Can Confirm this is happening in 1.12. Does this for Wn10 edition with custom skin. Glad to hear its not just me. Was about to report it until i saw this post

Can confirm that the same thing happening on my end
I'm using MCW10 when i equip my custom skin i load up my world a message appears Multiplayer restricted skin
Now when i press continue my world loads again but after that the game crashes completely without any reason
After i reopen the game my skin got reverted back to Alex and sometimes Steve
I looked on the more recent beta version and the same thing happening there

I dont really have that crash problem but every time i open the game i have to set my skin everytime

This issue appeared for me in the Windows 10 edition of 1.12.0. Skin resets to default Steve or Alex after opening a new session. I wonder if this is related to cross-platform usability, which seems to be new as well.

I also have this issue on Nintendo Switch. I have a skinpack that I have purchased, so I expect it to work. I only play single player. I have noticed, however, that if I wait to enter a world until Xbox live sign on completes, my skin remains. It only reverts when actively signing on. It is a nuisance to have to wait, but not nearly as much as having to go in and reset my skin and the headache that involves.

Moving here from another ticket. If I relaunch the game on Windows 10, it resets my skin to default, either Alex or Steve. Mostly Steve, but once Alex. I'm using a custom skin I made myself in Paint.net, and would like some advice as to what to do because this wasn't an issue the last time I played several months ago. I spend a lot of time and effort making my skins, and would like to be able to use them. (Without all the hassle!)

This bug also does occur on my computer at certain times. And resets to main skins like Alex or Steve. When this bug occurs I immediately change my skin to an default skin.

this happens on bedrock windows 10 edition as well. if i use a skin pack i got from the market then it wont reset, but if i use a custom skin (uploaded from my own pc) then it'll reset to a steve when i re-open the game after closing it.

this happens to me to. this means that your account was logged out and all you have to do is click the sign into ___ account button on the bottom right corner.

The changelog says that some instances of this bug are fixed. They are still working on other causes of this problem.

This bug also affects the Steve founders cape skin for IPad Air 2s’. Whenever I log on using my device, it sets me back to either Steve or Alex without the cape even though it is a store item.

I've noticed that if you're using one of the official skins, it doesn't reset. If you use a custom skin, it resets when you re-launch the game. But, your skin is still displayed under recently used.

Still happening in beta 1.14.0.3 if I'm playing offline or without sign in xbox account. However if I'm signed into xbox account then it is saved.

So i'm playing on Iphone, bought the game yesterday (version 1.12.1) i wanted to play the game but now i feel like i'm scammed cause i havent played it. The issue is that when i enter the game it sometimes load my account but sometimes don't next issue is that it never loads in the skin only when i change the skin it changes but when i enter the game next time its the same problem and when i try to enter the workd/server it shows that i have to change the skin and when i enter a world in rate cases it shows that i'm disconnected from my account!

I just updated to 1.13.0 on Windows 10. Skin selection does not save. If i change my skin and then go in and out of the marketplace, or restart the game, all available skins on the profile revert to default. Even if i delete all the available skins from the profile, they are all reverted back to default.

This happens no matter what skin you have applied

It probably depends on which release you're on, which kind of skin is selected in the profile, and which platform you use. It might also depend on what kinds of skins, if any, occupy the other profile characters.

On my Windows 10 system using 1.13.0, my selected skin is an imported .png file in slot 1. It never resets when I exit and reload the game, although the game shows a default skin at first, then a loading bar for a brief moment, then my skin, so apparently there's a delay before the selected skin is loaded. Maybe the reported problem stems from the game not being able to load the selected skin for some reason.

I have also seen the behavior described by IsJustaGhost (skin deleted when you return from the Marketplace screen), but not with my imported skin.

After a recent update that stated this was resolved the skin still reset after closed and relaunch for my windows 10 install.  After uninstall and install the game the problem was fixed.  

I recommend completing a full backup/export of all your world saves before doing this.  I lost all my saves and cannot find the means to get them back.  Windows 10 does indeed delete the folders and all contents entirely when removing the app.  I don't know how other platforms manage the saves.  Use caution.

I read that you can navigate to the folder of your world save; right click; and select Restore Previous Versions.    This didn't work in my case. 

For me on iPadOS 13.2 (iPad Pro 12.9” Gen 1) this issue has been resolved in 1.13.0. It has not happened to me since re-adding my custom skin. 

I also have no problem on 1.13 with an imported skin, but some people have reported that their imported custom skin doesn't work on 1.13. It might be that this feature is so new that we haven't settled yet on common terminology for distinguishing the various kinds of skins. Another possibility is that skins that were created with certain tools are formatted slightly differently and 1.13 is less tolerant of that than 1.12 was.

Idk if related, but I had used the Character Creator to create a custom skin, which worked for a couple of weeks. Then the last time I logged into the game my skin reverted to the default and the custom skin was nowhere to be found.

@unknown: That might be or might not be related. For the record, what platform? Single or multiplayer? If multi, Realms or BDS? Ever play on 3rd party servers?

Bug MCPE-56393 should not link to this bug at all. Completely different issue.
The bug there is Character Creator skins are being deleted. The fact that they become Alex is a byproduct of the deletion. MCPE-32089 is a bug that is older than Character Creator. Please reopen MCPE-56393

This affects imported skins (from a .png file) on 1.14.0 / iOS. Strangely enough it has never happened to me before 1.14, and now it happens every time I reopen the app.

Everytime I login into the game I have to research my skin, I have hundreds of them so that can be tedious, this whether I'm online or offline, and even with skins created by the Skin Creator, please fix this, it's still a thing in beta 1.14.1.3

Just opened MCE and received Failed To Load Character messages. Opened Minecraft and same message there as well. Now my created skin is gone again

I have a similar problem, in my case my skin goes to my friend and his stays on me but when he looks at me I managed to see my skin normally and I his.

Still happens on 1.16.0 and 1.16.1. This happens when you open a world really fast before the custom skin or the Marketplace skin loads. If you do that the skin resets to Alex or Steve. A skin takes around 3 seconds to load on Windows 10 and Xbox. On iOS it takes a little more to load. I don´t have other platforms. If the player waits for the skin to load then it's okay but the loading time for it needs to be faster because not everybody knows that they need to wait for the skin to load. I would suggest for the skin to load with the game itself on the Minecraft logo screen, even if it takes a little bit more time to load. I don't know if that makes it a different issue but it's related at least.

This never used to be a problem for me until the 1.16 update. Now, after every two or three sessions it defaults to Steve or Alex, even if I wait on the main screen for it to load.

Can confirm, Minecraft for Windows 10. After setting custom skin then closing/reopening the game usually 2-3 times, my skin resets to default and I once again need to set my skin. I use custom png skin, not store skins. Game version 1.16.1

Minecraft Windows 10, could be something with using two different computers. When switching computers it's not uncommon that the new one doesn't ask me to sign in with MS, but seemingly "gives up" to load the skin (character creator, so it's quite annoying to re-do all the time).

With the latest update in Profile settings there is a slider "Allow Trusted Skins Only". If you or server/realm mate are using a custom skin that is not in a .mcpack zip folder the game will display the player as Steve or Alex to all who have this enabled. You will still appear as your custom skin since it is local to your device.

For me this does happen in 1.16.200.55, but it changes my skin to Alex/Steve for at least 3 to 4 seconds and then my skin comes back.

It's also happening on 1.16.40 and 1.16.50 for 2-5 seconds then the skin loads. The time it takes to the Steve/Alex skin change to the correct one depends on your connection. iOS, Xbox One/Series X and Windows 10 are my platforms

This is happening to me. PS4, 1.16.210. Happens about every week or so. We customize our characters, everything looks fine for a couple of days, load up and we are back to default Steve. 

It just happened to me again today. I thought maybe that it would be tied to skins resetting whenever players update the game. But now I can confirm that this isn't the cause. Yesterday I was in the most recent update (1.16.220) on my Win 10, and the latest beta (1.16.230.54) on my phone. Everything was perfectly fine, and my 3 skins were there. And then today when I went back to play on my PC, all of my skins have been reset. Both in the beta and in the full release versions. I tried signing out and back in on both devices with no success. I haven't recently updated my PC and phone for about a month. I'm convinced at this point that this issue is happening on Mojang's side. And their servers just not saving your skin.

I think that, at least in very many cases, what causes this is that the game has trouble downloading your skins when you start Minecraft. (You might think skins would be stored locally, especially if you installed a classic skin pack locally, but I can think of some good reasons why keeping a master copy on the network is better.) If anything makes the download take too long, the game can open to the main menu while you still don't have your skin. (I see this a lot myself: My skin takes a few seconds to appear after the menu is shown.)

If you were to load or join a world before your skin loaded, you would be invisible to other players (or to yourself in 3rd person view). That would be inconvenient, and some PVP players might try to exploit it. So to prevent that, the game cancels the download and loads a default skin instead.

You might be able to mitigate this problem by reducing the amount of network traffic happening while you load Minecraft. You definitely don't want to be streaming, for example, or downloading software or content outside the game. And background apps will typically do cloud pings, so it might help to shut them down.. Some cloud backup services, like OneDrive, use a lot of network traffic keeping local files in sync with their cloud copies, so if you're keeping synced files you might want to change some of them to not keep a copy locally, or wait until they finish syncing before starting Minecraft. A specific and especially likely example of this would be if you export copies of your Minecraft worlds to cloud-backed storage: Those are pretty big files and you'd be syncing them right at the time you're playing Minecraft.

I'm sure you can think of other ways to limit network traffic occurring outside the game.

Of course, there are other reasons the download could be too slow, like contention for servers, and I would speculate that Mojang is looking at some other possibilities. (The Xbox Live servers belong to a different Microsoft team, but the Mojang team have an internal channel to work with them.) So Mojang hasn't given up on this yet. But you might be able to improve your own experience with not much effort.

I've encountered this every time I start the game on Android. It never loads the classic skin I had before, despite it still being in the proper place in the files, instead opting for the character creator skin, and forcing me to reselect the classic skin from my files if I want to use it.

@unknown: The game stores your skin in your Xbox Live account, it doesn't load it from your files. Storing skins on the network lets you keep the same skin when you change platforms, and also makes it faster to copy your skin to other players in a multiplayer game. Your skin files and skin packs are only used when you use the Character Creator to load a new skin.

In your case, you may have set up Minecraft so that it doesn't log in to the network at all because you only play single-player mode and don't need or specifically don't want to use the network for some reason. In that case, there might be a way to work around your problem, perhaps by logging in temporarily when loading the app, then logging out before loading your world. If you'd like to pursue that possibility, I'd suggest asking at Community Support. (We shouldn't discuss it here because I don't know anything about using Minecraft on Android, and besides that's what Community Support is for.)

Just updated to 1.16.221, issue still persists. 

It's in 1.17.0.50 as well. Not fixed, just ignored. We are stuck with Steve or Alex because Custom Skin crashes the game now.

This report does not cover custom skins causing crashes, only skins being reset to a default skin. If you are experiencing crashes, it's either a different bug or you have this bug and another bug that causes the crash. However, the game reports crashes directly to Mojang via the network, so there's no need to file a bug report for such a problem. Note that problems such as this can be caused by a skin file that doesn't quite conform to the standards for files of its type. This is a common problem with skins that were made using certain skin editors on the web. You might be able to work around it by uploading your skin to a different skin editor, making a trivial edit, and re-downloading it.

Many of your comments suggest you are misinterpreting some of the information in reports. For instance, you seem to think this bug has been marked as fixed, probably because it has a fix version. That is a misunderstanding: A bug is not considered fixed until its resolution is set to Fixed. The fix version above indicates that a partial fix was made in a Beta version, but we've had no report from Mojang about any fix to a regular version and it may even have been revoked in Beta because it caused a problem. (We don't get updated when that happens.) The guidelines should help you get a better understanding of how to interpret the reports, as well as how to use comments. Even Marketplace Skins won't save now after logging off on mcpe Beta 1.17.0.50!!! Toggling "trusted skins" on and off doesn't fix it. I've tried every Skin site even Marketplace Skins. My game crashes sometimes because of the Skin bug. Weird. This is NOT an Xbox problem. The Skins are stored in es file explorer only, always has been. I've been in Beta on Android since Wither Roses and my Skin always saved until the last few Betas.

Update: MCPEDL and Skindex skins also reset to default (same as Skinseed, Marketplace Skins or built in Minecraft Skin Creator after logging off/exiting Minecraft game. 1.17.0.50 Beta.

my current mcpe version is 1.16.221, I'm not a beta user and I'm using android 10. I have this exact same problems since I downloaded the app which was few days ago. every time I open the game after closing it, my skin is back to default which is either Steve or Alex. its really tiring to keep editing the skin to the customised one from the default.

This began to affect me in 1.17.2, my friends are all steve but if they go into third person they are not steve. My skin also resets to steve when I boot up the game. I have to manually change it

This happens to me and the wife, the wife plays on the Xbox and i play on the PC, so it does not appear to be a platform specific issue.  This only became an issue after the 1.17.2 release.

This happened to me too but I realised that it doesn’t happen when you load the game and wait on the menu without pressing anything and then wait for it to say loading resources then your skin should load

The bug also affected me. Although i do understand that my skin doesnt upload to new devices, and i have the use only trusted skins off, the bug still happens. Its annoying to have to re change your minecraft skins after quitting for a sec. also the bug STILL happens in the latest update. Im using custom classic skins btw

My situation is that my skin sometimes loads in but when it doesn't my hair style is the same but wearing Steve's clothes. I have to close out of the game and load back up until the skin appears.

This happens all the time for me. Gamertag is Tabarnaque#8507, I've been unable to set a skin since purchase in 2021.
Furthermore, it's not just that my skin gets unselected; upon reopening the game, any skin I might have made are all gone, and all I'm left with are random default skins.
