Mojang Notice
This issue is likely caused by using illegal or incompatible software, which are known to corrupt your hosts list by redirecting any Mojang authentification server address to their own illicit servers. To fix this, you need to remove any non-official software, then you need to fix your affected hosts file by doing the following:
On Windows
Go to the Start Menu and locate notepad. Right click notepad and select Run as Administrator
Press Ctrl and O on your keyboard, then enter
%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
as the "File name" and press "Open"Remove every line mentioning "Mojang" and hit save (Ctrl+S). (Example: https://imgur.com/qBb9vZA)
On Linux and possibly MacOS
Your user needs to be a sudoer (have administrative privileges), otherwise you need to log as the superuser if you know the password or ask assistance to your system administrator.
Open a terminal application (search for terminal in your application launcher).
Type
sudo nano /etc/hosts
Remove any line containing "Mojang" then save the hosts file.
You should now be able to play Minecraft again, please never use any illegal tools or accounts.
It is highly recommended to sign in and change your password.
⚠️ If your hosts file does not contain any line mentioning a Mojang server or you are still experiencing this issue, please contact 💬 Community Support. Please don't post comments here if you don't have any new insights to share, this is not a support forum.

Hi, I recently bought minecraft java edition after december 7th, which was when new players had to log in with microsoft accounts rather than create mojang accounts. I did this but I am missing the following features:
SERVERS - I can't join any multiplayer server. When I try, it shows the error message 'failed to log in: the authentication servers are currently down for maintenance.'

A number of reports indicate that this may be a problem with authentication for Microsoft accounts.
These reports indicate that they bought the game using a Microsoft account on or after 1 December:
MC-207891 MCL-15904 MC-207615 MC-207907 MC-207945 MC-207994
These reports also possibly bought the game on or after 1 December:
MC-207764 MC-207614
Other such reports created on or after 1 December:
MCL-15800 MC-207463 MC-207431 MC-207693 BDS-10332
Is there anyone who bought the game on or after 1 December and can access servers?
This may not be a bug within Minecraft itself, but it may be a valid issue with the Mojang authentication servers.
I'm experiencing the same issues and its super annoying I'm stuck with alex skin
Also it looks like you have almost the same description as my duplicate issue MC-207891... I'm confused

Hi, i have the same problem. But I don't have windows. The operate system that I use is Mac OS Catalina.
Please send me the instructions for Mac OS to solved this problem.
I wait your answer.
Mario.
To fix on linux, type sudo vim /etc/hosts
in a terminal and enter your password, then remove every line mentioning Mojang by arrow-keying to it and pressing dd
, then type :x
to get out.
To fix on mac, type sudo nano /etc/hosts
in Terminal and enter your password (it does not display as typing for security reasons), then remove every line mentioning Mojang by arrow-keying to it and pressing delete
, then type command-o
to save. Then, repeat this, except with sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
as the Terminal command instead.
@unknown, if you require assistance, please approach Community Support. 🙂
After a lot of thinking i figured out the solution :
go to xbox live
log in
itll show you java account
go to privacy
change the settings needed to be changed
ENJOY HYPIXEL
This issue is actually often caused by the Microsoft account migration, somewhere in your Microsoft account options you should be able to enable/disable multiplayer. I think it's in privacy settings but I'm not sure. It may also be due to what age you put when creating a Microsoft account because if you are too young it might stop you from playing. One way to get around this is join a Microsoft Family at https://account.microsoft.com/family/. Otherwise, try looking around your Microsoft account settings https://account.microsoft.com/. Other than that, I can't help. Good Luck!
I tried everything listed here but it still didnt work,
I am on MacOS and on the terminal thing, i didnt see mojang at all.
What do I do?
Note that since 21w03a (1.18.2 development version), the error message is now "The authentication servers are currently not reachable. Please try again.".
Some third party severs may be temporarily closed. Mojang isn’t responsible for the third party stuff.
