Xbox One X Crash - shutting down console completely

Note

Please limit comments to new information that will help diagnose the problem. In particular, it might help if there is some consistent activity that results in the console crash.

Comments that don't follow the Bug Tracker Guidelines are subject to deletion.

Some users report that the following stopped their console from recurring shut downs:

  • Reset the console operating system. (See comment for steps, and be careful to fully back up your data.)

  • Reduce resolution from 4k to 1080p. (reported here and in MCPE-159857)

  • Load affected worlds on a difference device, play for a while, then load them back on the X Box One X. (reported here)

Been playing for 2 weeks and today my game froze and shut down my whole xbox one x. Tried hard reset and uninstall/reinstall and still crashes whole console.  Contacted Microsoft and they told me if other games open to contact mojang support. Here I am.

I’m having the same issue! I thought was due to me using a texture pack but even with it off I’ll load into a world and another maybe a minute it will freeze and shutdown my Xbox one X. I’ve done multiple hard resets and uninstalls only to run into the same issue again and again.

Same, will run for a random amount of time and then out of the blue will shut down my Xboxonex. I've tried completly uninstalling and reinstalling, with or without texture packs,
Playing on a local world or on a realm. Doesn't matter.
Also for the record my console is well ventilated, plugged straight into the wall. It's bad enough when bad coding causes a game to crash to home...but to hard shut down the whole console is just sad.

I actually found a fix for the issue and played for quite a few hours last night and never once had an issue, Xbox even ran smoother and faster like the day I got it.
There are two things I did last night before loading the game back up.
First is to clear your local saved data for Minecraft and it’ll re-sync when you pull the game back up from the cloud.
1: go to Minecraft in “My Games & apps”
2: press the menu button and select “Manage Game & add-ons”
3: go to “Saved Data”
4: Select “delete all” on both screens. This will clear your local saved data it should be only a few hundred Mbs

The next thing I did was reset you console operating system. It sounds scary but it’s very simple and will keep everything on your console. Only thing you have to do is do the setup process and sign back into your profile.

1: go to settings
2: select system
3: select settings
4: select system
The above part may be out of order but you should be able to figure it out just by that. I’m currently at work making this reply lol
5: select console info
6: select reset console (READ NEXT PART BEFORE CONTINUING!!)
7: the last step will pull up a screen asking you if you want to reset your console. At the bottom are three options. You need to select “reset and keep my games & apps” this option ONLY resets the operating system and erases all potentially corrupted files.
Really hope this helps you guys and anyone else that faces this issue. Feel free to add me on Xbox! “A BoxofCheezits” is my gamer tag. Theres a space after the A in my name. Shoot me a message letting me know how it works out for you it if you’ve got any questions regarding any of the above.

Is this happening in any particular worlds? If so, are you able to provide a copy?

  • On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.

  • On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds

  • On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)

If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

Please could you let us know any more information about what is happening when or before the game crashes, to help us try and understand what the problem could be caused by.

Yeah its now February 12th and this issue still occurs on my xbox. And its not just worlds on my xbox it will shut down randomly on realms as well. I don't have a way to upload my realm to here either. all I know is it needs fixed. Reducing all my settings helped but that still will shut down randomly.

Following my experience mentioned in my earlier post, i finally decided to give the 1.17.40 update a try on my series x. My previously console crashing world worked. I could move around without the console black screening and switching off. I had a check around and noticed a few of my animals had disapeared (probably due to the crashes glitching my save out in prior tests) so i re-synced another copy of my original xbox one world. And started it up on my series x. No issues at all and all my animals there. Seems to work perfectly fine for me since 1.17.40. This may not be the case for all players so I encourage you to retest since a lot of people may be assuming that nothing has changed since no official patch note refers to a potential included fix and this ticket still states that the issue is present in latest test build. There may be several causes for the console crash symptom and so some may still exist. But at least in my testing/experience at least 1 cause seems to be resolved.

I am having a similar issue as everyone else, but it seems to me mine is a lot more problematic. Mine isn't the worlds that I have itself, it is the entire game except oddly multiplayer servers. I can play multiplayer servers fine, no problem there. Once I try to play normal survival or creative on a realm, single player, or on multiplayer worlds (not realms) it shuts my Xbox down completely and tells me it overheated. It's a very inconsistent shut down as well, I've had it shut down after 1 second, to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, an hour, to multiple hours. More often it will shut down in a shorter amount of time than anything beyond 10 minutes. I've done some testing myself to see as to what may be causing it and I have realized that it's happening when I am loading into a world, right as soon as I am loaded in, after I run around for a little, and it will shutdown 90% of the time when I go through a nether portal or a ender portal. So it looks like it's a chunk loading issue which causes the Xbox to overheat, anytime it's trying to load in new chunks or pre-loaded, but not active chunks, I can audibly hear the fans kick into overdrive and shut my Xbox down for overheating. It's only a recent issue as well, I have played Minecraft on this Xbox Series S the week the new Xbox came out and had zero issues up until a couple weeks ago. I have clocked in 300+ hours and never ran into a single bug or problem. I have tried everything possible; doing a power cycle, clearing save data, uninstalling and reinstalling Minecraft, resetting my Xbox entirely, and eventually tried deleting all my old worlds (RIP) to see if maybe a world I have is so corrupted that it was causing this somehow. None of those worked, my Xbox can run Cyberpunk 2077, GTA, Elden Ring, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 just fine. This is the only game and the only time I have ever came across a overheating issue. My Xbox is well cleaned on top of it, so I hope this helps add new information to an issue that seems to be going on for some time. I have discovered one new thing recently from trying out to see if the Minecraft Preview doesn't cause the problem (which worked for a little while until it shut down my Xbox). I wasn't playing with headphones on this time and I noticed something peculiar about how the Xbox tries to handle running the game. All other games I have played for years had usually a consistent fan speed (I can tell by how loud the fan gets, from time to time it would get a little louder but not too much). But with Minecraft when I am loading into a world the fan gets very loud and if I succeed with loading in it calms down drastically to almost inaudible levels. As soon as I start loading in new chunks the fan kicks on again to very loud levels. If I stop in my tracks and let it load (50% of the time it will load them in and I can keep playing) the fan calms down again to almost inaudible levels. So it keeps going from 1% fan speed to 100% fan speed which with every other game they have a somewhat consistent 50% fan speed throughout the game (not actual percentages but you can tell what I am saying).

One thing I like to add is I noticed if I uninstall and reinstall the game, the game works perfectly like the bug doesn’t exist. But once I leave the world and start a new one or join the world I played on before then the bug comes back and shuts my Xbox down and says it overheated. Not sure if it’s useful information, but something I noticed. Cause everytime I thought the bug went away after uninstalling and reinstalling the game, if I left the world I started or joined, once I hop backed into it, it would start up again

From all the testing I've done, Minecraft crashes whenever it tries to load multiple chunks too quickly at once. The problem is much more consistent if the Xbox has been running for a while before launching the game. It won't even make it past the world loading screen in such cases.

I'm having this same issue. Its not everytime I play but it happens at least once everyday. The lag is severe until it simply crashes my console. Also, i can't stand playing split screen with my kids because it lags very terrible. I hope this gets fixed because it's been a problem since the new update.
