Newest update 1.16.20 crash / freezes whole Nintendo Switch system

Update on this issue:

Oct. 6, 2020: When commenting, please be sure that you are experiencing this issue, which is that the entire Switch console freezes and has to be hard reset. That should have been fixed for most users in 1.16.21. Crashes that close the game but do not freeze the entire console, and problems signing in, are not necessarily related to this issue.

We are still investigating this issue, please feel free to add a vote here if you are affected, but please refrain from adding unnecessary comments. This is a bug tracker and not a forum for discussion or feedback, and we cannot provide status updates here.

Potential Workaround:
"For a temporary workaround, try not signing in to a Microsoft account. While you won’t have access to servers, Realms, or possibly Marketplace content, you can play single player & split-screen worlds. We are still investigating. - HZ"

My friends and I have all just updated to the newest version of minecraft on switch and every one of us are having an issue where our games will freeze before we’ve even loaded into a world, and so when we try to exit out of the game and shut it down our Nintendo switches will freeze entirely. My switch is only 3 months old so for it to be having these issues is not because of how much it’s been used, plus it’s not just me.
In just 30 minutes I had to restart my switch 6 times because it froze on me while trying to load my games.

At least for me it seems that the freezing happens only when I'm logged in with the Microsoft account. Seems to work pretty normally when not logged in. What happens after login to MS account:

  • Shows the "you've successfully signed in with MS account" or something similar

  • When clicked the "start playing" button, it just shows the background running, but no menu at all (can't do anything in game)

  • When clicked the Switch Home button, it goes to Switch main menu, but everything freezes (only option is to shut down the whole console with holding the power button)

  • After a fresh start, the game starts "normally" and you can play the game, but after "Save + Quit" the game it goes back to Minecraft main menu, the freezing issues starts again

    • It can freeze in multiple different situations, but the most common is when you try to close Minecraft with the "Close software" action

It didn't freeze when I was not signed into my Microsoft account but it did when I re signed in. I am on the physical cartridge version

this is also happening on the Xbox version

Before updating to the newest version I would get an error message when my switch went to sleep that said an error had occurred and I had been disconnected from the server, which was fine, I would just go to main menu and close the software and start again.  After updating, every time the server disconnects it freezes my switch so I have to do a hard reset.  It makes it frustrating to change worlds, save and quit... freeze, go to main menu to close software... freeze...  I have restarted my switch more in the last 10 hours than I have since I got it ( and I was sleeping for 8 of those 10 hours).

with me - under windows 10 - I often experience similar things. The longer my game runs, the more likely it becomes that the game will freeze when typing in the chat, in the search field, or on signs.
I've had the problem in all versions for a good 1.6 years.

BrewmasterLo (I'm nicer now)

I have the same problem except it causes my data to say its full when its not  also does not freeze my system

I just bought some Minecoins and upon returning from the eShop to my game, my entire Switch froze. It would briefly unfreeze for a few seconds, which I would use to try to close the game, but I wouldn't make it in time before it froze again. I was eventually able to make my Switch sleep, but after turning it on again I tried to close Minecraft and now the Switch is frozen again. It's been about 20 minutes now and I'm not sure what to do. I literally just bought the game about half an hour ago because my PC can't keep up with Java.

@Courtney Chadwick-Annan: please create a new report. This one will not be reopened.
