Please only comment new information on this issue. Comments that do not provide new information about the bug will be removed. Here is what we know:
The problem is related to save data.
It affects individual login profiles that have been heavily used.
The problem continues with the affected save data if that data is backed up and restored, or if it is transferred to another device.
For some users Minecraft often or always crashes after the long loading time, for others it does not.
The problem improved for many users around April 2020 with the Switch firmware 10.0 update, but it has become much worse for many users again since the fall of 2020.
For frequent crashing during or just after startup on Switch, see MCPE-109371.
For long loading times on in-game menus and GUIs where you see a loading bar, see MCPE-111640.
For long wait times with the load indicator at 45%, see MCPE-133545.
the game had start to take nearly five mins to boot recently for no other reason my son (who is autistic) has become fed up with the waiting for it to start up, this is the same for his sister also physical version yet it appears his brother copy which is a digital version appears to boot normal.
here is a link for the a video showing how long it takes can you please help nothing online appears to fix the issue and both my son and his sister are really disappointed.
thanks for your help

My son experiences about 25 sec of black screen on a Switch account with 282 MB of world saves (20 worlds) and <2 sec of black screen on a Switch account with 48 MB of world saves (3 worlds). Only the larger account is linked to a Microsoft gamertag, but that doesn't load until after the menu loads. Neither Switch account has any marketplace content or other save data except the Mario Mashup Pack (28 MB). Turning off auto cloud backup has not made any difference.
@Paul Ellis, could you compare the black screen time vs amount of Minecraft saved data for each profile?

Worth noting that some of the comments and duplicates on MCPE-58636 actually describe this issue as well.

With my friends and I, this issue happens as we play more of the game and I've actually switched to my Xbox One copy because boot times were exceeding 15 minutes. A possible theory that I have regarding this issue is that maybe this is the result of some fault with cached data. Either that cached data is really bloated (I have 1 gigabit of cached data on my switch copy) or some other storage related problem.

As a temporary workaround, you may be able to reduce loading times by deleting or off-loading worlds, skins, and other marketplace content that are not being used.

Could you please let us know how many worlds and resource packs you have saved, when the game is showing a black screen for 5 minutes?

I have 9 worlds, 10 templates, and 4 resource packs. Also most of my worlds and are less than 5mb and world templates less than 15mb and I was suffering more than 15 minutes of load time.

This is caused by some save data issue. Deleting the save data of your profile will fix the problem but i if you have any worlds you would like to keep then i recommend waiting until this issue gets fixed. There is a work around if you have a nintendo switch online membership. you can upload the existing save data to nintendos servers then delete the save data on the console and the game will run fine but when this issue gets fixed you can download the save data back onto the console to get all of your worlds back.

Deleting every world and cached data and resource packs does not fix the issue. If you check save data you will see that deleting stuff will not decrease the file size of your save. A new profile with a save data size the same as a existing profile will load instantly but the old profile will take 5 minutes to load.

One more thing to add is when minecraft is booting it will cause the switch to lag out and take forever to do small tasks like opening your profile, Closing the game while in this state will cause the switch to hang for a couple seconds then the game will crash. The worst case i have had of this is my switch completely locking up and requiring a reboot. I suggest the games way of storing its save data needs a rewrite as a 500mb save on first boot on a fresh profile is not very good. I assume the big save data size is due to the minecraft file directory being copied into save data to let it run cleanly because i dont think bedrock was made to be played on a single system with multiple profiles that have their own save games. Maybe have options and world files put into their profile specific folders and make the player choose which profile they want to use after already opening the game sort of like how luigis mansion 3 makes you select your profile on the menu screen and not when you select the game on the home screen.

Actually this is the last thing! The long load times are not directly cause by the size of save data. Open up minecraft on a fresh profile then load up the mario mashup world, copy the world 9 times then go into switch settings and data managment and the save data for that profile should be 835mb but when you go and load up the game then it will load up instantly. My existing profile that takes 2 minutes to load is also 835mb. (Also this is proof of the save data size not decreasing when deleting files as when you clear the worlds list of the 350mb worth of worlds the save data will stay at 835mb)

I have also experienced the lockup requiring hard reset of the Switch that Alex Borg describes.
Trying to lower save data was just a suggested possible workaround, not a fix. I agree there is something odd about how the switch allocates storage space for Minecraft.

1.14.30 just hit and the switch still takes 5 minutes to load. Is Mojang even paying attention to the switch because it doesn't feel like it?

Been having this issue for weeks and weeks now. Tried all sorts of things and nothing works. Nintendo couldn't be bothered to help and Mojang never responded. Reading this thread it appears to be a Mojang issue? Do you know when version 1.15.0 comes out?

For those affected, are you using an SD card? If so, can you please mention the make, speed rating, capacity, and any other information about it please?

No SD card here. I purchased Minecraft on the Switch through Nintendo's online store and downloaded it, and I have never used external storage.

We have had this problem for over a year. It appears to be related to one user's profile. If I use my profile the game launches quickly but my son's will take around 4-5 minutes on a black screen before reaching the Mojang logo. This is a digital version of the game, same result running on our two different Switches with two different memory cards. Some other details, my son's profile has a large world saved, around 150MB and it has several pockets of user created data that's spread out over a very large area (5000+ units away from the original spawn point). He has gotten used to waiting through the 5 minute launch time but this should really be fixed.

As of 1.14.30 this issue still persist, it seems to depend on how much save data is on the switch, the more save data the longer it takes.

I have the same issue as well since the 1.14.1 hot fix update. When I launch the game it takes about 3 minutes on the black screen alone, and the screen is pure black as the Nintendo Switch logo disappears. Then it takes about another 2 minutes on the Mojang screen, and about another 4 minutes to fully sync and sign in to the Microsoft account, while on pocket edition all of those processes take about 2 minutes tops.

Is it possible that the accounts have parental controls on them? Because that seems to be the problem with mine, all so mine dose load after about 17 minutes, if that helps. From what I know the game does not have any corrupt data as the switch can not find any, and I did what it suggested to do to fix it, with it doing nothing.

I tried disabling parental controls on my Switch and it did not reduce the amount of black screen time before the Mojang logo comes up.

The most recent update (1.14.60) appears to have shortened the waiting time before the mojang logo appears but the game does still sit on a black screen for a couple seconds unlike new save files that instantly load up to the mojang logo.

I can confirm it’s much better with Switch 10.0 update/Minecraft 1.14.60 too (I can’t actually say which, and the two preceding comments seem to disagree). I wouldn’t say it’s fixed. For me, instead of 30s it’s now taking about 9s. For Joshua DeNoyer 30s is much better than 5 minutes, but it still should not take that long.

After reading the last two comments I decided to actually time my personal load time via the switch and here are the results:
My complete load time is 2:03.71
Lap times:
1. 0 29.24 to white Mojang screen
2. 0 30.00 Title screen
3. 0 58.58 load character creator
4. 0 05.88 finished loading completely
Obviously 2 minutes of loading is still quite long, I guess I was just overly excited that it didn't take over 5 minutes anymore.

I would say that yes it is fixed and now the only reason it stays on a black screen for a couple seconds is probably just due to save file size. The character creator loading still needs to be sorted out though.

We are also experiencing this incredibly long load time on a Nintendo switch light using the digital version. I believe it is profile related as it does not take near as long on another profile on the same switch.

Hello.
I have 3 user profiles at my Nintendo Switch.
In one of them the wait to start is disproportionate, about 40 minutes (first black screen and then red with Mojang's logo).
I noticed that if I open the game with another profile it starts much faster, in two minutes I can already be playing.
Hope this helps.

I have two users on two different switches (one OG and one Lite). The same account still experiences issues with long dark screens when launching the game regardless of which unit. The issue has to be tied to the account somehow. This is so annoying...been happening for over a year now.

Hello. To reproduce this issue:
1.Find an account with +1GB of saved data on MC on the switch.
2.Open Minecraft.
3.Wait for it to load.
Final result. it takes more than 20 minutes to load:
Expected result: to work as some updates ago (a waiting time no longer than 2 minutes).
Extra: if you try with an account without +1GB of saved data (577 MB, for example), or if you save it on the cloud and delete the mc console data, it will load in less than one minute.

I have had this issue on my switch for 3 years. Its only one of my nintendo accounts. When i switch to a different one that doesn't have online it works fine. I tried to connect my microsoft account and it glitched so I assumed it was the account. So I signed out on my main account and it just made it so much worse. I've never been able to actually play my favorite game normally since i got it.

We want this issue to be taken seriously, we've had this for a lot of time, and not even an answer. We can't play our worlds!

I can't even play the game anymore. Nothing works now. My game freezes and/or crashes when trying to load a realm, server, a friend's world, and even my own worlds. This even affects my worlds while offline. And if it does work, it takes forever to load.

I haven’t been able to play minecraft in months because of this! the game is so slow (up to 40 minutes) and half the time it just crashes, it’s only on one of my profiles so it’s obviously a storage issue since the GB don’t seem to go down even if you delete stuff. This need to be fixed!

Well, this is very disappointing. I have been having this problem which has been getting progressively worse for the past couple of months. Today, it is to the point of taking 20 minutes to start the game so I decided enough is enough and searched for an answer. Now I see a bunch of people have the problem and have had it for several months. This should have an answer by now. Dontcha think?

For me, its about 2 or 3 minutes of a black screen followed by the red Majong screen with a progress bar stuck at about 1/3 for (I didn't time it) 10 to 20 minutes until it finally starts moving. Once it starts moving, it loads in less than a minute after that. This entire process has been like this for a couple of months. Since the 1.16 update I think. But it used to be about 2 minutes total. That was irritating. But it is now just too much of a time commitment to even play it. I had a bunch of worlds that my son had created so I deleted all but a few of those, I deleted all but a couple of extensions/templates and I even copied the data to an SD card, then started it without the SD card which prompted me to re-install, which I did. STILL the same thing. I'm not short of space on my system. The only other things I have on my system have been there since I got Minecraft and they all run fine. But just to be thorough, I deleted a bunch of downloaded games and data that I no longer need. Still nothing. I have no idea what else I can possibly try.

@Troy F you can’t fix it, only Mojang can since it is a problem with the data and storage of the game not decreasing thus causing it to freeze and lag. The storage is capped at 2GB which doesn’t deplete instead, it continuously increases. This has to be fixed by Mojang and fast, it is ridiculous how they have neglected this issue for months on end.

Shouldn't a clean re-install fix it then? Presumably, it would be a completely new, install with new data, right? Or if not, there should be some way of achieving that. Even if it means a hard reset of the device itself. I'm willing to resort to that if I had some reassurances that it would be worthwhile. But I really don't want to lose some of my saved data on a couple of other games.

@TroyF You can save your data in the Nintendo Switch online cloud; then delete the minecraft data in the console and reinstall it. Remember to turn off "save data automatically" so your worlds remain in the cloud while you play MC in other worlds. You won't be able to play in your worlds for a while, but it will work as a temporary fix until an update is released.

I haven't done the whole cloud thing before. So, I want to be sure I understand. You say that I won't be able to play in my worlds for a while. Would I not be able to play them from the cloud once it is re-installed? I'm not terribly concerned about the existing worlds (although my son might be). But I've already re-installed Minecraft with no luck. Is there something special that I need to do a full re-install and get rid of any existing data?

@TroyF Ok, if you delete your minecraft data in the console but save it in the cloud, the worlds will be available again if you reinstall the cloud data (after an update, for example, to test if the bug was fixed). Just make sure to turn off "save data automatically" so you don't replace what you saved with a restarded minecraft. After deleting the MC data in the console, the waiting time will be of less than 15s.
If you just don't care about the worlds and want to get rid of them, you may forget about saving the current data in the cloud and you may just delete the mc data in the console to "restart" the game, like if it was bought again.
Sorry for any language mistake, I hope this to work. It is a temporary fix, but we want AN OFFICIAL FIX for this.

Holy hell this software is crap. Excuse the language. Finally went the distance and wiped everything. Downloaded Minecraft again. It started up nice and quick. But now, when I try to connect to another remote player (which is the whole point of what I'm trying to do), it says "Could not connect: Outdated server!". I tried updating but it says I have the most current version. I don't know what version I had before, but the version showing now is 1.16.100. I'm trying to connect to my wife who is using an android phone and I think hers says 1.16.40. I don't know if that is the problem, but it wasn't a problem before. So I wiped everything only to solve the slowness and to lock myself out of everything. I'm sorry if it seems rude, but I really wish I could have a direct stern talk with a Majong devloper right about now. BTW, I am a computer programmer and I would hang my head in shame if this kind of problem went on for this long with no action.

Ooof well, the 1.16.100 came to switch like two hours ago, so let's wait for all the platforms to update (you can't play together when someone has an older/newer version). It should fix that problem.

Can we please get an answer about if this had been reported to the developers? It's becoming an insult, this is a truly annoying bug and should be a priority.
And now in the 1.16.100 it crashes when it (finally) loads the menu (The software was closed due to a error). And we are talking about +20 minutes loading times. I remember it was solved in february, but after 1.16.... it became worse and worse.

Thank you all for your help. This has been an unusually useful and informative thread. I had misunderstood the version number thinking that 1.16.100 was older than 1.16.40 (ie. 1 00 instead of 4 0). I now understand that the older version was on my wife's phone. She updated that and now we are back online. Still lots of glitches, quirks and frustrations, but the most important bit has been accomplished. Now, the only thing I have to do is negotiate with my 8-year-old son to get him to be willing to let me permanently delete the worlds he has on my profile. He's leaning toward accepting a package of candy in exchange. 🙂

EVERYONE please press and hold the power button on your Switch and choose "Power options" then the "Restart" button. Once the Switch is restarted, it should work as that fixed my problem with version 1.16.100 not loading the game.

@TroyF Oh perfect hehe, no problem, it is a very frustrating problem and we try to find a way to help.
@Bloofox Yes! Now is worse.
@Mikhail Ireland: I am going to try that ASAP! Thanks for sharing. I am responding soon if it worked for me.

@Mikhail Ireland oh sadly in my case the problem persists, did you restart it in a specific moment?
EDIT: At least it solved the crash, but well, I believe that we will have to wait for an "oficial" fix for the loading times.

After I tried opening the game a couple of times (both times it gave me the “software has closed because an error has occurred” message), right after it crashed I held down the power button to get to the power menu and restart.

I know this might sound stupid but try restarting a second time and see if it does anything.

UPDATE ABOUT THE BUG (1.16.100)
I will try to post the most we know about this problem.
Important aspects for a better comprehension:
*The nintendo switch offers a service that lets you save things in the "cloud", so you have them as a backup, and you can redownload them when you want. That means that you can delet things in the console but have them saved in the NSC (Nintendo Switch Cloud). That system is similar to the "Realm Plus" one, that saves your realm "online" without having it on the console.
*This problem usually happens when we have +1GB of saved data (1.8GB in my case)
EXTRA: I've deleted most of my packs and things that I didn't use (worlds...) but I don't know why I remain with 1.8 GB.
Problem itself:
It has suffered some modifications by the time, but I will focus on 1.16.100; when we have +1GB of saved data in the console, we usually get 5-10 minutes in a black screen, and then 10-20 minutes in the red Mojang screen. That gives 15-30 minutes (average, sometimes /). In some cases, when it finally loads, it gives an error and the game crashes (that doesn't happen to me anymore, but could happen to others); That long wait was fixed around february (1.14, I think),-where with the same worlds and a similar amount of GB (+1.2GB) it loaded in less than 30_ seconds_ but now we have a "second round" that avoid enjoying our game.
Most of us have tried deleting what we can, reloading the data, looking for corrupted data... but sadly nothing worked.
What proves that the problem happens with +1GB?
If you save your data in the NSC and delete it on the console, you will see that you have around 600Mb and it will load in less than 15 seconds; samething if you try in a profile without a lot of worlds.
That is a temporary workaround, but for the people that have long-term worlds and just want to play the game with what we had (what is ideally) is not a solution to a bug that started to happe randomly after being solved.
I've tried giving the most details I can, but we have to also understand that is not a very descriptive bug, since it consists in a long wait. If there is any specific thing needed, please ask and we will answer gratefully. Thanks and we hope this to get fixed ASAP, since it is an important problem.

The workaround works, I also got the stuff connected to my Microsoft account back. It will only keep skins though, all the world templates are gone. The settings will also reset.

1.16.101 still an issue.

1.16.101 still an issue.

I still have this issue. Minecraft is totally unplayable on Switch for me. Black screen for 5mins then "error has occurred" and closes. Some information incase it's helpful:
When I updated recently I started having this problem.
I was playing in realms recently. I Purchased new starwars classic skins and used the Jawa skin. I pressed download and loaded a previous 6hours back up of my realm but was playing in it after that. That's all the information I have since it's all I can do. I'll just have to wait for this bug to be fixed before I can play Minecraft again, I'm really sad.
I really hope this is your top priority to fix. I don't mind a few odd bugs here and there, but not being able to launch the game is just.. sad.

Update:
After trying to launch the game over and over, one time after 5mins there was no crash and the game finally launched. Not sure if that's helpful? Seems totally inconsistent.

When trying to load it takes over 20 minutes and then once it us about to be done loading in the Mojang Studios screen it freezes then crashes the game. This just started happening around the new update.

this issue should be a priority, so many people just want to play the game with their friends but can't because of this bug. Crashing occurs a lot too (at least for me, on my Nintendo Switch). This should be fixed as soon as possible, its been a thing for too long and too many people are being affected by this bug.

One way to resolve the problem is to go to the home menu if the console is too noisy and continuing the lauch preparation when it becomes quiet again. Also go to airplane mode and things will go faster

Note: Minecraft takes up a whopping 3.1GB of save data on my switch!! Whilst Wolfenstein Youngblood (my second largest game save data) only uses up 125MB!
it is clear that the save data for minecraft keeps increasing and doesn’t decrease, this is what is causing the problem. It has made the game unplayable since I can’t even open the game without it crashing every. single. time. after waiting half an hour on a black screen.
surely this should be a relatively easy bug to fix. The incompetence from Mojang is high here.

It seems that now it doesn't get passed the black screen at all. It just crashes after loading for ages. I even tried to open it on airplane mode and it still crashed. I really hope this gets fixed soon because this has only been getting worse for a very long time.

The problem may have been storage related as suggested by another commenter. When I couldn't open the game at all I decided to take the last resort measure of deleting all save data. It fixed the problem for me but at the cost of all of my worlds. I still do not recommend doing it because I do not know if it would work for others. I hope this information may be of use to somebody.

The game also crash at the menu, when loading a solo world or randomly when playing it,and this could due to the same problem since in a second account everything run smoothly

@John Cline you are correct in saying that it’s a storage problem, the save data storage constantly increases and doesn’t go down even when you delete some data (worlds, skin & texture packs etc) this has caused my game to reach 3.1GB of save data storage which is causing the game to crash upon launching the game.
it’s just a matter of time before this bug is recognised and is fixed, who knows how long it’ll take.

(Switch 11.0.1, Minecraft 1.16.100) My Son has 69 worlds, about twenty skin packs and 3 mash-ups!
Takes about 7 minutes with just a black screen after launching game and a further ten minutes on the Mojang red screen.
My profile has two worlds and a couple of skin packs and launches in about 10 seconds.
Now trying to go through his vast galaxy of worlds to see which ones aren't essential 🙂
update — with now only 20 worlds it is performing much better, down to about 3 minutes to get into the menu screen. The save game data on the console is noted as 2GB which seems pretty massive compared to other games on the console (e.g Breath of the wild, Minecraft dungeons, Mario kart and countless others < 80Mb).

I had the same issue with 10-20 minute load times, several minutes just to switch between menu screens, severe block lag, and crashing. My save data was also around 2GB - However, my largest world is only 50mb. I would regularly make backups of my world by creating a copy, and delete older backups as I created new ones, only ever having about 10 total worlds max at a time. I also only had 2 texture packs and no behaviour packs / add-ons. My save data should not have been anywhere close to 2GB. It seems that while deleting worlds removed them from the list in game, it did not delete all of the save data from the system. This resulted in it eventually accumulating and bloating to 2GB and creating all of the above issues, even after I deleted all texture packs / additional content, cleared the cache, and deleted all but one world.
Prior to realizing it was a storage issue, I tried every troubleshooting step I could think of many, many times. Restarting the Switch, powering it off completely, deleting all extra worlds / packs, clearing cached data, using airplane mode, archiving the game, completely deleting and reinstalling the game, moving save data from the SD card to Switch's system memory and vice versa... The only thing that lowered my save data size and made the game playable again was to completely delete all save data (via the Switch system settings), delete the game, and reinstall it from scratch.
I did get a warning that the new save data mismatched what existed on my Switch's save cloud, so I wonder if the save cloud has anything to do with the save data bloat.
Unfortunately, experiencing this issue means your game becomes unplayable and the only fix involves losing all of your worlds - Unless of course you fork over extra $$ for a Realm just to be able to properly back them up, which is pretty reprehensible. This seems like a pretty serious bug that needs to be addressed.

I'm not going to delete all my worlds, I have about 50 of them, 10 of which I really care about. But I'm waiting for Mojang to fix the bug, (because I know they can, since they've done it before in the 1.16.0 update) and I will only delete all of my worlds as a last resort, meaning that Mojang isn't able to fix the bug.

@Benucho: what partially fixed this issue around the time 1.16.0 came out was the Switch firmware version 10.0 update, not any change to the game.

it used to only take 2-5 minutes for the game to fully load. now I get a blank screen for 2 minutes before the red Mojang load page comes up and loading takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes (sometimes more) then it takes an additional 4-6 minutes to load the in game screen and occasionally crashing before getting an error message. so basically (if doing the math right) it now takes about 15+ minutes before I can play and that's assuming the game doesn't crash from loading. I'm on the Switch Lite by the way.

Just want to add in to everyone else, you aren’t alone, we have had the same problem on our Switch since the November 2020 Minecraft update. Any time loading into Minecraft, it’s stuck on the black screen first for 10 minutes then the red Mojang screen for another 10. We have done all the troubleshooting (including uninstall and reinstall) except completely deleting all files from cloud. We also play on an Xbox One and Minecraft loads fine on that.

This is the same Christina, I have done all the steps you mention above and still no joy with minecraft on the switch, However works fine for my son using his login details on xbox.
Hopefully this will be sorted soon by the devs.

Since we know this is storage related and my son's Switch still gets about 12s of black screen (used to be 30s+ before Switch 10.0 firmware), I decided to look at his storage. I found something odd:
[media]I wonder if anyone else has this "Miscellaneous" cached data, and if its size correlates with the black screen time? (From the main menu, go to Settings>Storage>Cached Data)

The only things in my cached data are UI packs for the Hive server. I do not think the size of the save data directly causes the long loading time cause you can copy a large world multiple times on fresh save data and it will not affect the load times at all. It does still seem to have to do with the save data though

@smol bug I am certain it is to do with the save data storage. Here’s what I wrote in a post a while back:
+ I have attached an image relating to the extract from the post
‘Ever since about March this year, the boot up times for the game have been insane and they have become increasingly long. In March it was around a 5min wait but now it has become a 30+ minute wait and even then it crashes once it gets to the main menu. Something I have noticed is that the storage for the game caps at 2.0GB and I have already reached that 2.0GB limit which in itself is madness since the second largest game in my library (Mortal Kombat 11) only uses up 161MB!!
Eventually, everyone will run in to this problem if they play minecraft long enough since the storage doesn’t deplete and causes the game to slow. This bug should be a priority fix above anything else.’
It appears to me that the save data storage continues increase in size even when you delete different cache in-game. I’ve noticed the load times increasing as the save data increases which caps at 2GB and now that I have hit that 2GB limit, the game doesn’t even boot up and crashes after waiting 40 mins.
@GoldenHelmet mentioned that after the switch firmware update the load times decreased which did work for me in around October of 2019 which I believe is to do with something Nintendo does each firmware update to reset or refresh something within the system however, I did recall the save data storage staying at exactly the same size which only continued to increase.. and increase.. to the point where in around March 2020, the game took 10+ minutes to load which also happened to be around the time a friend mentioned the insane save data storage minecraft takes up which I recall at the time being around 1.6GB. Fast forward to about June and it takes 40+ minutes and the games storage has capped at 2GB, things are missing in the game such as hotfix update patch notes which appear when a new update from Mojang is released and the ‘MarketPlace’ art work not loading in.

I have noted another thing about the data. on my switch the data is about 900MB. this is from all the forced updates over the course of the two years I've had the game. the only in game data i have is my hattoricraft texture along with two worlds which only take up about maybe 25% (maybe less). my suggestion to the Mojang people would be to focus less on getting out forced updates quickly and fixing the total upload size of the forced updates so that it doesn't interfere with the actual gameplay or take up too much space. i also have noted at times the MC marketplace artwork not loading at times and still even with a good connection it takes several tries to access it and I can't explore much without the MC market freezing/crashing the game. this only happens on the switch though. works fine on my MCPE and the W10 (windows 10) PC version though (i actually have both java and W10 versions)
UPDATE: i actually am considering quitting Minecraft on my switch. I'm so tired of having to wait the 20+ minutes it takes to load and each new update makes it longer and worsens the problem. it crashes so much during loading and the MC shop takes 10+ tries to connect even with good internet connection.

This issue has returned for my son’s profile. It went away for a while but has returned for the past few months. I just timed it: 6minutes on Black screen, 7mins16secs on red Mojang logo, when the progress bar finally reaches the end it crashes with “the software closed because and error occurred”
His save data is exactly 2GB.
My profile which was not used much loads pretty much instantly.
This issue really needs to be escalated as this prevents the game from even launching and has been like this for quite sometime.

The best way to take faster to get in is by restarting Nintendo switch

Restarting the Nintendo Switch doesn't necessarily work, its basically just turning the switch off and back on. Restarting the switch doesn't clear data from the game either. (which is what causes this issue)

Restarting or Shutting down and restarting does not resolve this issue.
But this morning something different happened...After trying to launch for 12+ minutes, instead of crashing it actually finally opened the main menu with an error saying "Global Resources Reset - Failed to load Global resources previously".
It allowed me to open a world, but once in the game it crashed when attempting to open the crafting menu.
I managed to erase a few older worlds and asset packs from his profile, but the save file remained unchanged at 2.0GB. The game still takes 12+ minutes to launch and has been crashing again when reaching the end of the Mojang progress bar logo or if it does launch it will crash when trying to open a world.

so what if I'm having the same issue but for Windows 10 likely for the same reason as I have quite a few large (+700MB) worlds and have played quite a bit of minecraft so that is probably the reason by that issue is marked specifically for switch, although It only takes me about 2 minutes which is still quite a lot longer than the 5 or so seconds it usually takes.

I have always had around 600 MB on Minecraft. But i've had loading and overall gameplay issues since day 1. I had originally thought it was just a bad game card. But then I tested it on another account on that same switch and it ran perfect. I'm assuming it's just some kind of error that happens between the switch and the minecraft software. I'm really hoping Nintendo is working with Mojang to fix this because it's obviously not just one or the other. It's an issue with both sides.

On my son's switch, it can take 30 minutes or more to load.
On my switch, it loads quickly.
The difference is my son has 260 worlds, each one of these is only a few Mb. In comparison, I have about 10 worlds of varying sizes.
My assumption is that the worlds (or part of the worlds) are being loaded before the game starts.
I think its more to do with the number of worlds, not the size of them.

@ghostJago technically it is to do with worlds but not in the way you think. The more worlds you have, the more MB is takes and the more MBs that are loaded onto the save file the laggier the software gets (since deleting stuff in the game doesn’t actually remove the corresponding amount in the save file).

-Both my children have this issue.
-Deleting save data and using new Microsoft accounts hasn't fixed anything.
-Using a new Nintendo account HAS fixed the issue but this would mean buying the game again and getting another online subscription. I was able to test this using my own Nintendo username on my sons switch but this is no kind of solution since we can't play together this way.
-The issue seems to be connected to your Nintendo account, can others confirm this?

@Matt Mitchell, do you have a family Nintendo account with multiple profiles/users? Our (temp) fix was logging into Mc from a different user on our Switch account AND creating a new Microsoft profile for this profile.

@Christina Lee Thankyou, I have let my son use my Nintendo account since I have a copy of Minecraft on it for him to use. I can't do the same for my daughter because It would require a new nintendo acccount and a new copy of minecraft which im not prepared to pay for, so unfortunately she still has to load in for a long time and sometimes reboot once she does manage to get in.

It appears completely deleting game data and then redownloading the game helps and works best along with reducing the amount of worlds and other data that is saved. as of right now update data sits at around 900MB. the only other data I have on file is a bunch of skin packs (which I'm unsure of how to remove or storage space amount used) and the Hattoricraft texture pack (which is only around 300MB). I have however experimented with creating a new account which helps but does me no good as it won't let me access the marketplace.

I don't think the issue is actually related to save data. Due to the fact that I got rid of all my save data multiple times and if anything it made the issue worse. I'm wondering if it's a dual-error between Nintendo Switch game reading software and the game itself since it only affects certain accounts on certain Nintendo Switch systems.

this bug affects profiles that have more than 300MB on their Nintendo Switch, and the wait time on the red Mojang screen continues to get longer the more you explore around your world or continue to expand on your Minecraft's storage in any way, until at around 2GB of storage, Minecraft on your switch is rendered completely unusable (at least for me)

Once the I opened the ticket to technical support nothing happens. The switch game in unusable. Please resolve this issue.

Today I suddenly got a much longer black screen. I didn't wait to see how long it would actually take to load, but I was able to resolve the problem by power cycling my Switch:
Hold down the power button for several seconds to bring up this screen:
[media]Select "Power Options".
Select "Restart".
These steps are necessary to reboot the Switch because just pressing the power button only puts it into suspend/sleep mode.
For those affected by this bug, please let us know if using the steps above improves Minecraft load time.

@GoldenHelmet I’m afraid not. I also tried this a couple of times a little over a year ago and it didn’t do anything at the time and still doesn’t boot up the game without crashing the game as my save file is still stuck at 2GB. I’m hoping we don’t have to wait another year for this to be fixed.

My game still crashes right before the red screen even shows up... other times it crashes right before the actual game fully launches. (being able to press "Play" on the menu screen) I tried this a few times (Restarting the system) and the wait time is still about 20-30 minutes long before the game crashes.

My suggestion is that people just let it go. Posting to this forum hasn't done anything and this bug will likely never get fixed. Does it suck? Yes but obviously there's very little care to resolve this.

yeah... I agree... I switched to xbox because Minecraft for switch performs way worse than it originally is, and it was originally very bad, The performance on the Nintendo Switch isn't as great as the other platforms and the bug fixers and Mojang developers seem to just not care at all about the Nintendo Switch community :/

I believe this to be an issue when the number of worlds created gets up around 10 or more. The more worlds created, the more severe the startup performance becomes where as now I can't even open minecraft at all.

I tried to remove all the worlds created except one and the switch remains slow as before.
cloud it be a problem of memory leak? I mean, deleting the world Minecraft does not delete the world data?
Please resolve this issue!!!

It's been over a year since I first commented on this bug report. Kinda disappointing that this is still affecting the game. New switch profiles still load the game fast so i don't see why this should be taking so long

My daughter is also having trouble trying to load Minecraft, she first got it about a year ago played it for a few months and it worked fine. It then started crashing halfway through her games saying "An unexpected error occurred." Now the problem is worse as it will not load at all. When you open the game, it goes to a black screen and doesn't do anything. Eventually, after at least 15 minutes it says "An unexpected error occurred" and the game closes so it is completely unplayable. We have tried loading the game from 2 other accounts on the switch and they load instantly and she doesn't have any problems. But the account not working is her main account, which is connected to her Nintendo online and has made lots of stuff on there, she is rather upset over it. Please help!! 😞
We have restarted the switch many times, checked the data isn't corrupt, transferred the data from the SD card to the console... still doesn't work.

I have noted that fully deleting the save data and everything seems to be the only thing that helps. for right now I have my one world in the save cloud and I have since noticed it doesn't take as long anymore. i still had to download the update data which sits at round 900MB the only other thing I redownloaded was my hattoricraft. The only other thing i have downloaded still are the skin packs which I don't know how to delete unused skin packs on the Nintendo switch but it seems that it's not taking much space. time has been reduced from the 15+ it used to take to around 2 or 3 or 5 if the wifi is acting up.

My son was also very upset about this although I see him gradually accepting that his creations are lost. This bothers me more than anything - that Mojang and Nintendo seem to be getting away with ignoring this issue. After 1 year of waiting my patience has run out. Today I have emailed ArsTechnica and other media outlets to publicize the issue. I encourage everyone else to do the same.

My daughter has an absolute meltdown anytime Minecraft is mentioned. She's put in so much effort to build worlds and was rather proud of her creations. She doesn't want to lose anything but at the same time, the game on her main account is completely unplayable!
I am now also in the process of emailing ArsTechnica and other media outlets to publicize this issue. This has gone on for far too long, we have been waiting for a fix now for nearly a year... other people have been waiting even longer! Will this problem ever be fixed? People's patience is running out.

@Jason Tan I tried talking about this issue 2 years ago and then again last year. Both times I achieved backlash or people saying its my internet, even though this clearly wasn't and still isn't the case. Therefor if you do this I advice you proceed with caution.

@Jason Tan has the right idea. I’d suggest to people following this thread should make reports to Mojang directly by sending in tickets and messaging Mojang Support on Twitter or through the website until this issue is addressed and recognised by Mojang.
I’ve sent multiple messages and tickets explaining the save data issue and have repeatedly just been told to reboot my switch or contact Nintendo either of which does absolutely nothing to resolve the issue. This has gone on for far too long and will continue to get worse and worse if something is not done about this issue.

hi I just got a refund for buying Minecraft from Nintendo for this problem. It took a bit of convincing them but if you all call nintendo and do the same, that will put pressure on Nintendo to work with Mojang. Unfortunately most companies are only motivated by money.

I've been checking on this issue daily for more than 3 months now... No fix, in fact, we haven't even heard anything related to the Nintendo Switch from Mojang lately, I'm starting to think that maybe Mojang won't actually fix Minecraft for switch. I'm sorry to say, but Minecraft for Nintendo Switch doesn't seem like its going to be fixed soon, However, the developers may actually fix the version, its just highly unlikely at this point... We believed that you guys, working at Mojang, specifically fixing bugs that need to be fixed, could actually, well, fix bugs. This bug literally prevents us from playing the game entirely, forcing us to spend the time to make a new account or spend the money for another platform in order to play our game again, basically costing us real money, for the price of all our worlds, just to be able to play again. I really hope the rest of you guys find a fix, I needed to get Minecraft for the xbox in order to just be able to play the game again. It just doesn't seem like Mojang cares about this anymore. :/

In my case it improved a little (idk why), at least it doesn't crash and now I wait 13 mins (time ago was like 40). Anyways, if you can at least open the game... maybe I could recommend making an special world a realm, then delete all the mc data (the realm is part of a minecraft special cloud, vinculated to microsoft, so it shouldn't be deleted) and then, download that world again. In my case I haven't tried because I can't afford it rn, but maybe is a solution if you just care about a world and can afford it. You are literally resetting the minecraft, but you will be able to download back a world. If you are unsure, then keep all the worlds in the Nintendo Switch Online cloud, and just delete your minecraft data in the console.

Getting a refund sounds like the best course of action. I will be contacting Nintendo today.
This will NEVER get fixed, so best to cut your losses and move on.

Sadly a refund will just work for those with the digital version

I have requested a refund as well. I HIGHLY recommend people with the digital version do this as the Nintendo Tech Support agent had no idea of any issues with the game so its not even on their radar.

Okay, here is all the information I can get for this issue from my own testing:
People are confusing two separate issues as the same issue which is that the size of the save data = time waiting in startup. These aren't related and both are just caused by having a long term save file.
The game has a storage limit of 2GB which I could reach on a new switch profile by copying a Super Mario Mashup Pack world about 40 times and this did not affect the loading times but I can confirm that deleting those 40 worlds will not decrease the save data allocated for Minecraft but then will let you create more worlds after cause of the storage restriction. My guess is it's a switch OS issue that doesn't let Minecraft unallocate save data for itself.
The long load time issue is hard to recreate due to needing a long term save file so I don't have much information about what causes it and how to prevent it. Maybe it's some sort of save file corruption caused by the game crashing while saving which is likely to happen on long term save files.
On a new save file the default amount of allocated data for it is 577MB and is mainly just game files and the main Minecraft directory and if it is save data corruption then this is probably where it is happening.
There is a way to get around it but it requires a realms subscription so that you can transfer your current worlds onto another device and then back onto the switch after wiping the save file. If you do not have a realms subscription then the only way to fix this is to delete your save file including all your worlds or just use another switch profile to play the game which both will not let you access your worlds.
This is a serious issue and it needs to be looked at by the mojang developers and I hope after all this time this will get fixed.

My guess is it's a switch OS issue that doesn't let Minecraft unallocate save data for itself.

the realms idea isn't an option for me sadly. however completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game did help. lucky I saved my one world in cloud storage. I am now standing at a little over 1GB of storage and this is after the last forced update from a couple of days ago. the only thing I have saved now is my hattoricraft texture pack and some skins (i still can't figure out how to remove skins on my switch lite) but no worlds anymore. the load time has been greatly reduced to just 2-3 minutes which is ok but still I would like to see this issue fixed as soon as possible.

My suggestion for a fix that should be permanent is to run the game through software data instead of through save data like it is currently. The game copies itself into save data probably to allow it to access world and profile specific files easily but also meaning it gets saved over every time the game is closed which is probably the reason it is having problems. The game should just run through software data and only use save data for profile specific data. It would require the game files to be moved around a bit but it's a good way to make sure anything that isn't world files doesn't get messed with.

The game doesn't crash on my Nintendo Switch anymore, but it still takes a very long time to load. I removed around 38 out of 55 worlds that I didn't care about, and my storage space went from around 2GB to around 1.1GB, I'll keep you guys updated, for example, if the game loads faster at all, if I can exit/enter out of worlds normally or at least quicker than usual, and see if I crash at all.
Edit: The game was a little faster when it was loading, 5 minute black screen, and a 15 minute red screen, as opposed to the 10 minute black screen and the 30 minute red screen. So I guess that deleting some worlds would be a safe option if you can get in. (At least for a little while)

Would it be possible to see an up to date video of the issue please, so that we can see what screens are being stuck, and what they look like. (If the video is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.)

I have just added a video... the game used to crash whilst actually playing. Then it started crashing on the red Mojang screen. Now it just goes to the black screen and after about 10 minutes it says 'The software was closed because an error occurred.' (I have uploaded a photo of the error message.)

Game was working fine on my switch all weekend when I wasn't connected to wi-fi. Played a bit tonight at home. Then when I came back to it, my game won't get past a black screen after the switch start screen.
Very frustrating as I just got my elytra!

I've experienced this bug and its annoying that I can't play a game that I payed for until it get fixed.

Over the past few weeks Minecraft has become increasingly unstable. Now when trying to load Minecraft the screen goes black for about 5 minutes then provides an error. From there it will not open. It is a cartridge edition of the game.

It's been almost a whole month and I'm still getting this problem. Only twice has it actually loaded, but even then it takes at least 20 minutes to load and the game gets laggy. I've tried everything I can to try and fix it, but to no avail. Is there any solution to this problem, or do I have to wait for another update?

it's sad to know the problem will never get fixed and what happens when the entire 2MB of space is filled from forced updates? I guess at that point i would be left with no option but to trade in the game and delete the data. I hate that thought though because I have no other systems I can play on plus I got the game as a holiday gift. I used to have the android version but the controls are terrible so now I only use it for the marketplace. I have both PC versions but can't play them much anymore because of my worsening back problems. mainly it seems no matter how many of us complain or anything they won't work on the bug at all. The only solution I've found so far is to completely delete the save data and not to add too much. i agree with Benuchø. this bug is starting to get real bad to the point most users are asking for refunds or for those who have physical copy or copies of the game are trading them in or asking for refunds as well. I have yet to hit the 2GB limit but with all these forced updates I'm sure in time I too will hit that point. for now all I can do is delete and redownload the data when things get bad. honestly I too am giving up on the hope this will ever be fixed.

@SakuraHime indeed, the only way to temporarily fix the *game breaking* bug is to completely wipe the save data. I already hit the 2GB save data limit a few months back and the game no longer starts up, after 30-40 mins of loading the game crashes and I cannot afford to completely wipe all my save data since I have quite a few worlds that I’ve spent a good few hours in. I guess I’m just waiting for that glimmer of non existent hope from Mojang.

Hello all,
Here is exactly the same.
My son plays on Nintendo switch and from time to time it takes 3-5 minutes to load Minecraft.
(The last 2 Years 4 times)
I only found a way to don't lost the world's by create a Realm. Then I upload world by world and save it on a Android tablet with the same account. Then delete all local data on the nintendo switch and the cloud backup. After that I can upload the world's again from the tablet and download it on the nintendo switch.
After that it works with a "normal" loading time.
It is much work and I hope Mojang will fix it.
So it is not a nice game feeling and I have to pay money for a Realm to transfer the world's.
Regards

This may just be complete chance and I may be the only one, but after updating both Minecraft (to 1.16.220) and my Switch (to 12.0.0), loading Minecraft has sped up to massively manageable times. Upon launching Minecraft at the home screen 5 separate times, Minecraft has never taken more than 35 seconds to load to the main menu. My Minecraft save data is over 1.6 gb (and I have Backup Save Data for Switch Online) and I have around 10 worlds with many packs. Minecraft previously used to take dozens of minutes to load for many months now, but the problem has seemingly been fixed for me (although I wouldn't be surprised if it came back).

Well guess what happens if you submit a report at the Mojang Support site as suggested above by [Mojang]Mega_Spud (Jay Wells). After 2 months, you will receive an email reply saying "technical issues are very hard to diagnose remotely". It then suggests to submit a bug report at bugs.mojang.com which is this forum we are on right now.
Good luck everyone.

I'm on all the latest builds and latest OS on a Switch Lite and it continues to happen.
Deleting and reinstalling the game doesn't help
Checking the game for corrupt data doesn't help
Rebooting the switch doesn't do a thing. Or if it does, it's not shaving much time off it because the black screen followed by the red loading screen both take up an incredible amount of time
Even deleting a bunch of saves doesn't help. People here say they had to delete ALL THE SAVES for it to work? That's not ok.
I recommend Dev & QA really taking the time to grab some switches and create some saves and see what happens for them over time. Smoke tests aren't sufficient. This is a real world problem and people here have paid good money for a game that doesn't perform this way. I know it isn't a "rare bug" because my friend is also seeing the same on their end.
Please. Spend some time to try to reproduce the issue by using your product on a switch lite and saving worlds.

Here is a video of the issue, the same thing happens on our two different Switches and with two different memory cards. It's absolutely an issue with the save file. And it's been like this for a year.

I think is that the developers limited to 2 GB and people who are close to that limit might affect some slow downs in my observations.

I don't think it's a 2 GB issue. I looked at my daughter's saved data
Game: (as seen in Switch Settings) 1.1 GB
Saved Data: 22 worlds at 105.8 MB
Templates: 1 template at 30.5MB
That really isn't a lot...

Is there a way to fix this without deleting my progress. I’m not getting rid of my worlds for this. I could transfer them to another device as a temporary solution, but I don’t know where.

@Ethan Kunst: so far we have not found any fix. Do try fully rebooting your Switch and checking that the firmware (Switch OS) is updated.

I have a question, is this happening because of how much worlds and etc or for something different

the last update has done nothing for me at all to fix the problem. Not even updating the Nintendo switch lite system worked any. I still have the problem and while deleting the data and stuff helped reduced the load time to 2-5 minutes (or 7 minutes with weak signal) it's still only a temporary fix. sadly I don't have the funds to backup my world to realms but I was able to put my world in cloud storage.

Don't bother with a realm. I bought a realm for a month to see if uploading it would correct the issue, but the world in question failed to upload every time. It was 150MB.
Question for the mods, it sounds like you haven't been able to reproduce this issue?
Why don't you just retrieve the save file from one of the 100 people here and load it up and watch the logs to see what's happening during the 15 minutes boot up? During launch my Switch cooling fan runs full speed and by the time the title screen is reached the battery is reduced by 20%, so it's doing some major CPU the whole time.

Jason Tan: Neither the bug tracker mods nor the Mojang developers have access to any other users' personal Switch save data. Save data is stored physically on the Switch and/or in the Nintendo cloud backup associated with the Switch user's Nintendo account.
I did have this issue on my Switch last year but it cleared up almost entirely for me with the Switch firmware 10.0 update (down from about 40s black screen to <10s).

any updates on a fix for this, i just keep getting passed around, is this a minecraft fault or a microsoft fault?
are you working together to fix this,
my daughter and probably everyone here has spent many hours and plenty of money on this game.
if not retrievable are we all getting a refund for the amount of mods purchased on main accounts that we can no longer use?!

Same problem, ridiculously long startup time for a profile with a lot of playtime. Tried numerous solutions without any improvement. Restarting/shutting down Switch does not improve load times, as it did for users experiencing this problem last year. Starting in airplane mode also doesn't help at all (previously users reported this worked and it was thought to have been related to the system making cloud save backups).
Deleting multiple worlds/resource packs, etc., also does nothing to improve loading on the affected profile. Only completely deleting the save data for the profile fixes the problem, which mean the player loses all progress. And for what? It seems highly likely that if the player plays long enough, the same thing will happen again.
We really need more information from the devs about what the problem is and what's being done to solve it. Should we bother deleting the affected save data, or wait for a solution? Is this something completely beyond our control or can it be prevented? Will affected save data load normally once the problem is addressed, or is it permanent? Knowing things like this will help players decide if it's worth it to endure the extremely long startup time in hopes of saving the worlds they've put so much time into, or if they're better off starting anew, or if they should just stop playing altogether.

The bug tracker staff are not able to give updates about Mojang's internal priorities or progress on fixes. You should direct such questions to a Mojang community manager, e.g. on Twitter, or give feedback at feeback.minecraft.net.
Laura Bennet: Questions about purchases on your account should be directed to Mojang Support.
Benuchø: Sorry, using a realms to transfer a world to another device is the only way to transfer a world from a Nintendo Switch.
Evan Bugmann: Sorry, no one has answers to the questions you are asking right now.

I agree with Laura & Evan. They need to get this issue fixed (or at least post some kind of update that they are working on the problem). I'm finding the only solution is to delete everything and start new with every update and I'm not sure if it's going to be worth it anymore to just restart every time there's an update which is mainly when the problem starts back up for me. Laura to answer your question refunds on packs and stuff all purchases are final. you might could ask about a refund for the game depending on how long you've had the game but if I recall right all Minecraft coins and marketplace purchases are final.

This is a nightmare for us too. My son's switch takes up 20 minutes to load when he signs in online in his own profile. His brother's profile is fine - but he wants his own with all the stuff he has created etc!
It's causing lots of upset and arguments in the house! Often once he gets in he gets kicked off! And his time allocated on his screen is them almost finished!
We've deleted worlds, restarted the switch and we are using the online version of the game - but th SD card is just the same.
Please fix this soon!!

My daughter has been unable to open her account for months, but up until yesterday I wasn’t having any problems. We use same switch, same digital version of the game, and we have cloud ba ups, and separate Microsoft logins, now mine takes forever to load, if it loads at all. We’ve tried all of the suggestions on fixing, including opening the game in airplane mode and once the Home Screen opens to pick play turn it off. Today, nothing is working. Why does this game have so much trouble just working? We just want to build stuff, go adventuring, and look for loot. Why is that so hard to get?

It's not only the launch that takes so much time, but nearly everything,Microsoft account/skins/marketplace/loading a world/opening a chest. But i found out that the game shows time to time "loading ressources packs" but i've got nothing beside the mario one (not even active). You can maybe also try calling nintendo,it's their console so they might know something about a storage difficulty...

New updates out and its still doing this. Its been almost a year come on

it useaully stops for a long time at 45%

Can confirm that the loading bar does stop at 45% usually

Can confirm that the loading bar does stop at 45% usually

No improvement with the 1.17 update.
Also can confirm that 45% is the main hanging spot, but it's probably irrelevant to the issue itself. It takes a long time to clear the black screen just to get to the Mojang loading screen. In total, after starting the game on Switch, it takes at least 15 minutes to get to the main title screen to play the game. Then, depending on how big the world is you're trying to load, it could be another 3-6 minutes. So you're looking at an average of 20 minutes just to START playing Minecraft, and you better pray it doesn't crash once you start.
If you want to play a little Minecraft on your Switch on a bus or a train, forget about it. Want to play at home? Load well ahead of time, and if you need to take a brief break, put the Switch to sleep with the game running to avoid the long startup again. It's unacceptable by modern standards and still pretty bad even by old-timey "reticulating splines" standards.
So if you only have an hour to play, about 30% of that hour will be spent just starting the game. Smh.

Ok, I just want to mention that the comments section is not a place to argue and complain to Mojang, it's a place where we can discuss this bug, not to throw threats at Mojang. Look, I know your annoyed about this bug, but they're trying their best to fix it. Keep in mind, they're working on 1.18 (Part 2 of Caves and Cliffs) right now, including other bug fixes, they have a lot to work with. Plus there's a global pandemic right now, and Mojang is doing their best to keep updating the game for us. So basically, if your just going to go to this website just to complain to Mojang, then don't, try to at least have a nice comment instead of a hurtful comment.

Ours doesn’t start at all anymore. We don’t even get to the red Mojang screen, just endless black until the game closes itself, because and “error” occurred. We are playing on a third family account, that we started because we couldn’t play on either of our accounts anymore. That one starts up just fine. Has anyone considered that it’s something to do with the Minecraft/ Microsoft/ Nintendo online nexus?

Issue persists after update today. I tried clearing cache data afterwards as well. No dice.

This issue isn't affecting me THAT much (but definitely does), in my case the game loads pretty fast, BUT because I erase my save data every time I create a new survival world. But this doesn't mean it isn't happening, it's just that I could partially avoid this issue by deleting my progress. But every time I delete it and as soon as I open the game, the save file goes 964MB because of nothing.

IMPORTANT READ THIS:
I believe that the cause of this issue is Nintendo's fault. Earlier this month, they have released the 12.0.3 system update, which causes some problems downloading different software (Including the Minecraft Updates!)
A few days ago, they recently provided another update, but that one too has problems.
Try to keep up with the updates, and see when the next one comes out. Then, see if the game opens again.

Kosta, your theory is wrong as it doesn't take into account any of the information provided by everyone.
This problem has persisted FAR longer than a couple weeks. The 12.0.3 Switch firmware update came long after this problem first started showing up. Of course, that's evident to anyone who views the history of this bug and earlier comments that can be easily viewed above. I've been experiencing it for months, and some have reported it persisting for over a year.
Switch firmware updates have had nothing to do with improving or worsening the current incarnation of this bug, which appears to be linked directly to a user's save file data becoming unstable after enough hours of playtime.

Ours has a black screen for about 5 minutes, then the red progress comes up and gets stuck at 45%. If you go out and back in while the game is loading, it will go to 54% then back to 45%. We also have to constantly enter the code on the account to allow for online play. Game will give error when trying to close software or randomly crash. We had issues before, but the 1.17.2 update has really made it noticeable. I have the cartridge version, not download. Ipad and W10 versions work fine.

Like the note states above in the bug, it seems to affect profiles as some on my switch loads lighting fast. So wether you are at the red Mojang screen stuck at 45% or black screen, its due to loading your save data.
I have tested all the other methods (delete/archive game, reinstall, restart/power down, etc) but these methods didn't really resolve my son's profile though mine was really fast.
So I backed up save data to cloud and added a Microsoft account. Then deleted all save data (his was sitting at almost 2GB's, with only 1 world and really no resource packs enabled) deleted the game and reinstalled to system memory just in case. I was then able to access his account within maybe a minute. However, as soon as I downloaded save data that I backed previously, it went to a slow crawl again.
There is something messed up with how it loads the users save data(even though my son's account doesn't have much). Sorry if it's long.

Sorry I am a novice with this - What were or are the work arounds?

What is "save data"? Like saved worlds? Also, what he describes there could hardly be described as a "work around" (if that is what GoldenHelmet is referring to).
I have also had this issue for months. Sometimes if stall out at 45% loaded, other times I have seen 59%, sometimes both. By looking through the comments, there appears to be no progress of any kind, is that correct?

Andrew Ashley: backing up save data to the cloud is something you do through your Nintendo Switch settings, not within Minecraft. Save data is all of the the user-specific/post-install data saved by a game.
I never said there was a workaround for this bug. All I said is that you can try the things Todd mentioned. In a few cases that look like this bug a Switch restart, or a reinstall of the game, may improve loading. But there is no solution or workaround for this bug right now other than removing the save data that is triggering it.
If you have a realms subscription, you could upload the world(s) you most want to keep to the realm, then delete your save data, then download the world(s) again. If you do that and it works to keep the world(s) while eliminating the black screen issue, please comment back. That may be useful information for the developers.

I seem to have been experiencing slightly longer load times again. the new load time is 5-7 minutes to load and another 2-5 minutes to fully log me into my Microsoft account. I'm not sure why this hasn't been fixed yet but it does need to be fixed soon. I've tried resetting and deleting all the data and it helped for a little bit but it started back up after the patch update. The only known data I have is update data, one texture pack, and skin packs. I'm the only user of my Nintendo Switch.

Has anyone tried transferring save data to another console? I suspect it'll work like the Nintendo cloud backup. Just wondering if anyone tried it?

I notice the "save data cloud" backup is running really slowly for the problem user account. I'm surprised it's backing up anything because I've just re-installed save data from Nintendo cloud to try to solve this issue!
Perhaps Mojang can allow us to save our worlds out somehow to give a work around for this mess. Either manually in the game ('coz Nintendo won't allow you in the file system) perhaps via transfer to another user account on the device. Or provide realm access as part on the Nintendo online subscription.

I've been tracking this issue for months and see more folks stepping forward seeing the issue.
In addition to all the known reasons why this may happen to your Switch/Minecraft, I'm wondering if old data saves exacerbate the issue.
i.e. There's a possibility Mojang continued building changes to Minecraft but old data saves aren't optimized for newer versions of the game.
This would also be the reason why the admins don't see this issue.
1) Maybe they don't have as many saves as we do, or,
2) They have a lot, but they're all recent
Food for thought

Update: the load time doesn't seem to depend on whether the save data is doing a background sync to Nintendo cloud. So isn't a file lock issue.
I wonder if it is something as simple as growing log files like Microsoft word 15 years ago.

Took 45 MINUTES just to load Minecraft. Even then my world froze my switch.

Has the issue been narrowed down to any specific part of save data? It has already been found that it isn't exactly an issue with any specific personal data such as worlds or downloaded content but instead something to do with the way the game is stored. I'm sure there could have been a somewhat simple band-aid patch to workaround the problem until it could be eventually solved.
I have stopped playing this version of the game for a while due to me being forced to keep my worlds I've had for years in cloud storage so that I could access the game in a reasonable amount of time. Even then I still think this should be top priority and fixed in a hotfix

If you are thinking about getting a realm to save a few of your worlds before deleting your save data do not bother.
I just purchased a realm and all uploads from switch fail.
As per https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/REALMS-8022
So not only does this bug cause hours of annoyance, I am now out of pocket.

If anybody could do a deep dive into the Minecraft save files and figure out what is actually causing Minecraft to take 1 HOUR to load it would be much appreciated. I think I’m one of the worst affected and I don’t want to lose all of my hard work on my worlds. Maybe then Mojang Devs can try to fix this bug. Thx in advance

Since this issue seems to not be extremely widespread and also (apparently) Mojang has not been able to reproduce the issue, I've started to wonder what may be unusual about my son's world that's causing this issue. One main thing that could be considered unusual is that the user created content is very far away from the initial spawn point and also pretty far away from each other. There are a handful of user created towns that are spread out across 8000 x 8000 square units.
I also suspect that there may be a number of user placed monster spawners buried underground, so there could be many mobs in places that are not obvious.
I'm curious to know if any one else has a similar situation.

I've had this issue for about a year and a half, I've sorta grown to live with it but just recently with the new hotfix it has been crashing every time I "load in" which takes 30 minutes. As you can imagine I've been sitting at my game for the past 6 hours waiting to play (one of the longest sessions so far).
(edited)One solution I've found (THEORETICAL) to this is to, backup save data to the cloud(you need online)> delete system save data of the game
The downsides to this are:
No worlds from prior game
all downloaded data will be lost
Potential Solutions to downsides:
Wait until REALMS-8022 then load backup data to the game upload worlds to the realm receive on other device
What I've found:
Worlds, Templates, ect seem to affect this but also the switch, its almost as if the file is somewhat "corrupted" but not actually being (according to the switch). For the fault of it being the switch is, probably because its sorta leaning toward the low end of devices like it not having alot of ram making loading times unbearable. If ever you do want to play on your old worlds just backup the save.

Deleting save data does fix it, I tried getting a realm to offload some worlds but due to REALMS-8022 I cannot upload any worlds from switch.
I've since been in a kafkaesque nightmare yoyoing between Mojang/Nintendo "support" trying to get a refund for my realms purchase.
Neither of them take reponsbility and palm you off to the other entity. It is absolutley driving me round the bend.

I also continue to experience the problem. So far the only thing that has worked for me is fully deleting and reinstalling the game updates. I really hate losing all my worlds every single time there's an update. I did manage to put my one world in the Nintendo Switch cloud storage. When it comes to patch or hotfix updates normally just deleting and reinstalling the update data works best.

I don't have this issue, but have been dealing with REALMS-8022 and am finding it may be something to do with the Nintendo cloud save backup. You guys might try disabling it for Minecraft and see if that helps?

We are dealing with this issue as well. Switch had no clue this was a bug and sent me to Microsoft who also had no clue. Google found me this. Sad it is unresolved;-(

I experience this issue as well, but I am temporarily playing Minecraft on my second Switch account until this bug is fixed.
Playing on a different Switch account seems to be the only way to play for now. You may still be able to join any realms you are in/you created, you just won't have any worlds from your main account or whichever account you play on. Hopefully this bug can be fixed in the future.
It'd be a shame to lose my yearly survival world on my main account.

Adding my data points for my disappointed daughter's experience:
Nintendo Switch Version 12.1.0
Minecraft v 1.17.11, cartridge
Save game size 1.1 GB (lower than the 2 GB that I've seen mentioned in comments.)
Local files stored in system memory. 11.1 GB free
Progressively has gotten worse as described in the ticket. Currently can't get past "The software was closed because an error occurred." Never gets to the Mojang loading screen, which would often get stuck at 45% for a while.

Hello, I am reporting this issue as well. Will provide the statistics on our device. Are there any recommendations to address the issue? If deleting local data is a solutions we may consider it.

From Nintendo AU: (this has worked for us)
If the game is loading for other users on the console then it indicates that the game's save data has become too large. Minecraft downloads/caches all visited worlds to the console in the form of the game's save data and it can become multiple gigabytes in size and can prevent the game from loading if this occurs.
Deleting the game save data should fix this problem. For Minecraft, this will not effect your purchases, progress or in-game items as these are saved to your Microsoft account in the game. At worst, doing so may prompt you to sign into your Microsoft account again when you next launch the game:
*From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
*Scroll down and select Data Management, then Delete Save Data.
*Select the game title for which you want to delete the save data.
*Select the User for which you want to delete the save data. To confirm, select Delete Save Data.

Hello Natalie,
The deletion worked. Although the system is working again, the hard work and efforts that my son put into terraforming several worlds and experiments with redstone is now no more.
This may not be a problem for other users. It would be nice if selective deletes or ways to compress/archive these works.
The data checking tool that was on the switch did not mention or do anything to help us, which saddened us more. I am glad the device is working. The question still remains, the symptom is gone, does the problem still exist?
I would like an answer to this, if possible.
Thanks for the assist, and I hope Nintendo is monitoring this thread to provide guidance.

Thanks for the assist, and I hope Nintendo is monitoring this thread to provide guidance.

After the switch update they had my game only took 30 seconds to load. Im not sure what it fixed to do thta.

Saw Gavin's comment, tried playing on my main account and I'll be damned, it's true. Can confirm, my corrupted save data now loads normally. My condolences to those who deleted their save data to fix this problem.

Saw Gavin's comment, updated switch, and now works for me as well. I'd stay still a little sluggish on the black screen, and I was stuck at the 45% loading page for a little but, but now it loads at all! Updated info as follows:
Nintendo Switch Version 13.0.0
Minecraft v 1.17.11, cartridge
Save game size 1.1 GB (lower than the 2 GB that I've seen mentioned in comments.)

Is anyone still having this issue after the Switch firmware 13.0 update?
To check that your Switch has updated, navigate to “System Settings” from the Switch homr Screen, swipe all the way down on the settings list on the left, and then select “System.”

The switch 13.0 update has fixed my son's Minecraft load issue (was taking 45 mins to load). Now the game loads in 3-4 mins, logs into Microsoft, all his worlds are still in the list and I think extra packs etc. Data on the console now reads 756 Mb or so, but the switch online backup still says 2 Gb
I'll ask him to play for a bit, and then re-check the on console and switch online data sizes.
Thank you @Gavin Coffey for the update that there was movement on this issue.

Hallelujah! I have just updated my daughters Switch and tested Minecraft..... I can confirm the Switch 13.0 update has fixed the loading issue and she is able to access the worlds that she had made before it stopped working. She will be super happy, thank you!

I can confirm that this issue is fixed. It probably was the Switch’s software issue itself.

Even if the issue is fixed,it may come back like last year...

Lucklily i played minecraft switch even with this bug intact. As soon as it seemed like it was faster i came here. But Tovre's concern is very valid. This could very easily happen again.

Updated Switch today version 1.17.30 logged into a realm using realcw texture. Logged out of realm waiting for the main menu got up and came back approx 15 minutes later to the black screen the software crashed.

I tested yesterday the startup time on my son's switch. After the version 13 Switch software upgrade, the load time is apps from 15' to 40''. That should be a great result. If the bug is fixed this means that cannot happen again. Otherwise is not fixed but Nintendo/Mojang had applied only a workaround. But, you know, we do not know what they changed so @Tovre be happy for now. cheers.

FINALLY! Its been fixed in the new switch software update. Seems to have been a problem with the Switch System itself. Thanks Mojang & Nintendo!

Resolving as Fixed based on comments above. It seems that the Nintendo Switch firmware 13.0 update has resolved the problem. For this bug report, the Minecraft fix version of 1.17.30 will be on this ticket as a point of reference for when the issue was confirmed to be resolved by the community, and not because Mojang reported a fix on their end. If the problem comes back in the future (as it did after the Switch firmware 10.0 update mostly resolved the problem for a time), then we will start a new ticket.

Yes, the nintendo switch 13.0 update has fixed this issue. I thought it was only me for a time, then came back to this ticket and realized it's an official fix. Just so glad I can go back to my 1.14 worlds that have been saved and never used for the longest time. There was still quite a bit of crashing due to heavy lag spikes after my nintendo switch started booting up Minecraft again for the first time in almost 4 months, but it was temporary and was resolved after I disconnected and reconnected to my internet router. Thank you Mojang and Nintendo.

The game still takes considerably longer to load on existing save files compared to new ones. Feels just like what happened with 10.0.0 where the save file system on the console was adjusted slightly which made minecraft load a little better while still not solving the issue that causes the problem

Still suffering from extreme long load times, first black screen for 5 minutes and after that it hangs on the loading screen on 42%. Other account is much faster.

TL;DR: To the casual player, it's fixed. To players who at least spend a considerable amount of time, the issue persists.
Long black screen started around 1.17 to Mar 11, 2023.
Traded in my switch for a new OLED last month. No noticeable improvements whatsoever.
Still the 5-10 minute black screen, 3-5 minute Mojang 42% Load screen, & then the 2-3 minute auto sign-in.
Maybe the character customization items/accessories has to do with the vastly different load times, because I know I have quite a lot more stuff than your typical casual player with a fresh account, who doesn't necessarily care too much about aesthetics.

1.20.41 OLED, Game Card
No improvement since last post here. Been like this since 1.17-1.18
Has a chance to crash when:
the loading screen appears
is at 40%
is at 75%
just before the title menu
Can crash as much as 5 times before even getting to the main menu. That's 25 minutes to potentially more than a whole hour before even getting the chance to play.
