Exiting Nether Portal causing the game to freeze at "Building Terrain"

Update on this issue May 5, 2020:

Testing in 1.14.60 has found that this bug can be triggered by an interaction between certain portal coordinates and render distance.
Please comment below with your portal location and render distance. We would also especially like to know if the bug can be triggered in the current beta version by any of the coordinates listed below.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start a new world.

  2. Build a nether portal at any of the coordinates listed in the chart below.

  3. Set render distance as indicate by the chart.

  4. Travel to the nether using the portal.

  5. Travel back to the overworld through the portal that spawns in the nether.

  6. Repeat steps 4-5.

Expected result:
The overworld loads and the player can move around and interact normally.

Observed result:
The game gets stuck on the loading screen.

Notes:

  • This bug can also occur when travelling overworld --> nether with portals at certain nether coordinates, but it seems to be less consistent in that direction.

  • This bug also occurs when returning to the overworld from the end if you set your respawn point to one of the problem coordinates.

  • Other loading and rendering errors sometimes occur in conjunction with this bug, such as transparent or "x-ray" chunks (MCPE-63268).

Workaround

You should be able to use your portals if you either

  • reduce your render distance, or

  • move the portal in the dimension that gets stuck loading.

Note: The render distance that works differs depending on the portal location, but it appears to be independent of device, world seed, and world contents.

Original description

I've seen this bug already been reported "MCPE-42542", however the poster hasn't responded to the request for the world so I am creating a new issue. Feel free to correct me if I'm not supposed to do this.

I have 2 nether portals that both lead to the same place in the nether. I'll call them "Portal A" and "Portal B". Portal A was constructed first. It works completely as expected. Entering it and exiting. Portal B, which is about 100 blocks away, does not work when exiting. Entering works just fine however trying to exit gets stuck on "Building Terrain". This doesn't seem to be an issue with my world, as creating a new world in creative with the same seed and putting the portals at the exact same coordinates still does not work. The only way to get past the "Building Terrain" is to Alt + F4.

Coordinates:

Portal A 18,66,70

Portal B 124,64,91

Where you spawn after Alt + F4 18,79,67

Both the Creative Test World, and the Survival World have been attached. Survival world is too large to attach so I've linked it here. Survival World

Edit: Can confirm the issue still occurs on 1.11.1

I'm able to exit and enter fine, however the world doesn't render parts of the world. I posted pictures on my issue about it. Sorry you can't use nether portals though

migrated

This just happened to my cousin on the Xbox One.
He was hosting the game, and the server didn't crash, but he sat there for 5 minutes and it never loaded the overworld.

It also happened to me in the Switch version just now...

migrated

I've been having the issue on my world. I have a nether highway and this bug specifically occurs when I enter the nether in portal A then enter the overworld in portal B. This has over a 95% success rate of causing infinite "building terrain" screen. But if I go to the nether in portal A, go to and from the overworld in portal C, then go through portal B, it seems work fine. I could upload my world if needed.

migrated

Same problem here on a WIN 10 REALM, no nether portal, but chunk not loading, logged off and can't get back on. Restored from a future backup, i.e. one taken after i logged off, and that fixed the issue.

migrated

This bug also occurs on Xbox one. Same as others have stated, with two sets of portals, both sets linked by coordinates, one set will almost always get stuck on “generating terrain” when leaving the nether.

I just found a possible workaround, making the portals in the nether 3 portal blocks wide. After about 10 tries, not stuck once.

Fiti

Still an issue in 1.11.4

migrated

I also am having this issue. Each time I exit the game and open it again in order to get around the infinite "Building Terrain" screen. After opening it again I'd find myself back in the overworld, but spawned next to the Nether portal actually, not where I would have spawned if I used it. This issue has been happening every time I exit the Nether for the SECOND time. Every first time works fine but it could have been a coincidence that it is happening the second time I try to get back to the overworld.

migrated

I am having this issue now as well, along with a friend of mine too. We've been playing the Realm for over a month now, and occasionally have this issue, but it's annoying. Went through a Nether Portal, I got stuck on Building Terrain. She logged out in the Nether then Logged back in, same thing, Stuck on Building Terrain.

This is on Bedrock Edition, Windows 10. She is on Win 10 Enterprise, I am Win 10 Pro. I am in UK, most of the others who play are based in Norway, including her. I use wired, everyone else, as far as I know, are wireless. Specs are all different, yet mine are;

Win 10 Pro Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.557)
32 GB DDR4 RAM
1TB SSD
nVidia GTX 1070 1GB
Intel Core i7 7820X 8x2 Core 3.6 GHz

Her Win 10 is;
Win 10 Enterprise Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.1146)

Please Mojang, fix. 😞

Elllo!!! If Mega_Spud sees this comment then the world i had problems with was actually the Wor*_st* Realm Ever (bedrock edition)_. You know that because you are on the discord server. Ask Murphy for a copy of it i guess because (I can't get a copy of it yet) it's the world/realm we had problems in. By the way, we entered the portal in a district called fivekay (near spawn there is a bridge to it. The portal is down in the mines) and went to a nether fortress near it. Whem chunks weren't loading, we decided to relog because we were trying to build a blaze xp farm, but the chunk where the spawner was didn't load so as i said, we tried to relog in the nether. Bad mistake. It made the bug and rejoining just made you get stuck in building terrain. The only fix we had wad to ping the owner of the realm (Murphy ofc) and make him roll back the time. Kinda like a time machine / rewind. Hope that helps!

migrated

When i've encounted this previously it appeared to be related to corrupted/unloaded chunks.  These were areas in our over world which would not render.  The only resolution we found was waiting for the nightly restart of the realm

migrated

I have plenty of experience hosting BE Servers, and I've found most chunk loading errors appear to be related to slow or unresponsive storage. Take a world with faulty chunks and load it on a server with an SSD and they'll appear instantly. This can also fix issues related to logging out next to invisible chunks and not being able to log back in.

migrated

It's on realms, not servers. We can't do those unless the devs make a page where they put the realm name so they can do ot and stuff.

migrated

added a photo to show these unloaded/corrupted chunks.  this issue starts happening when we start seeing these.  only fix we've found is to wait until the realm restarts

Happens to me on IOS about 2 days ago and haven’t found a solution yet. I was in the nether and exited out while still in the nether and now my world gets stuck on the generating world screen.

I saved and exited a game while in the Nether, upon trying to reopen the world it hangs on the "Generating World" step.  Recurring issue with this world now, and it has been impossible to open the world again.  Really hoping this gets fixed.  (Windows 10)

(Fix)

This happened to my too, I can’t get past the generating world screen, but the Minecraft tips still change so its not frozen, I was able to fix this by joining my world with another account and entering the area where my other account (the owner of the world) was, I tried to punch him and then suddenly my main account which was the owner of the world got past the generating world screen and I was able to play normally with it, however I was dumb and left while still in the nether again and the bug occurred again, I tried to fix it as I did last time but it wouldn’t work a second time.

If you decide to try what I did make sure to not leave while in the nether again because this fix doesn’t seem work a second time.

Also tell me if it fixes your problem, I’m really curious.

I think that I have discovered some very valuable information.  I attempted to follow Aban Sainz Burboa's fix using a second account.  I didn't immediately find success with this as I could see the world host that was unable to load in, but couldn't interact with the player entity in anyway (Couldn't hit, give items to, or cause gravity to move the player who was stuck on the generating world screen).  I finally found success when changing the simulation distance set for the world.  Changing this setting and attempting to load in would sometimes result in the world loading fully.  I can continue to experiment with this if the devs feel it would be helpful, it might be possible for me to figure out what exact setting changes allow this fix to work.  I feel it is very important to note that I had the most luck getting back in during my testing when I lowered the simulation distance and placed my secondary account in a location close to the world host (who couldn't load in) – using this method I was able to get the world to load on the host client 3 separate times.

(Host - Windows 10)

(Secondary - iOS)

I think this bug is caused because the game tries to load the chuncks in the overworld but as the player is in a dimension the game can not load neither in the overworld nor in the dimensions.

This bug can happen  when in nehter and The End. I left the map closer to a Blaze spawner.

I’m having the same issue here at:

https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-49331

migrated

You can now safely log out in the nether, you can only NOT log out in the nether near unloaded chunks, because it seems to have a problem generating unloaded chunks on realms and servers, but if you're far away from the unloaded chunks (btw this applies on the overworled too) you can log out. If you're pretty near it (render distance) then please don't log out.

migrated

@Map111 Is there anything I can do do restore my current world with the issue?

migrated
migrated

Yeah is there anyway to salvage the worlds that have been affected by this?

migrated

If it's a realm world yeah you can, if it's a bedrock world then just painstakingly look for the world in the coded world names in the game files and copy it.

migrated

@Map11 Ah welp, it seems that I’m using the bedrock version. Mind explaining what you mean by searching for the world in the coded world names?

Not sure if this is related, but a zombie walked through a nether portal. When I walked through, i was killed by the zombie while the "Building Terrain" was showing.

migrated

Im just going to note any differences that happened to my world.

When I got stuck at "buliding terrain", I was able to exit using the switch's home menu and restart the world normally though it was somewhere else random and was not the correct location. Also, very rarely, it will create another portal and will fix the softlock though this portal is still in the wrong location.

For those who are having this issue, and wish to restore it:

Save your world file to your pc hard drive

Edit the data on your world by changing the DimensionId to 0 (Preferably using Minecraft Universal Editor)

Send the file back to your device

And then you should end up in the overworld without the loading screen stuck.

Feel free to hit me up on Discord if ya need any help

It ain't just on the nether where it's stuck on generating world... but in the end or even in the end city. Probably a dimensional generation bug.

This happened to me when I was in the End. I saved and quit out when I was there and now when I try to enter the world it gets stuck at generating world. My friend can still join. PLEASE HELP

migrated

I have a Realm, and my friend made a nether portal two days ago. As far as I know they have not had any problems, but today when I tried to join the Realm it got stuck on building terrain for about 4-8 minutes. When I finally got in, I was suffocating inside a mountain my base is on. I could walk through to open air and survive. What is happening? I immediately left and downloaded the world. When playing it, there is no gaping hole in the mountain you can die in, and it doesn't take as long to load. Is the server holding my realm corrupt possibly?

UPDATE: Just tried to load the Realm and it did so in a regular time. (Under 1 minute.) When I loaded in, everything was fine? It did trigger a glitch that has been happening in this world, realm or otherwise though. Blocks disappear, move by rows, or get destroyed in odd shapes? It's like they un-load from the world or something. Anyways, I'm fine now and will get back to playing. ???

I have just used Jason Yi's method successfully.  Thank You!

A copy of the broken world is attached.  I made the mistake of saving in the end.  This was a single player xbox one world.  I uploaded to a realm (30 day free trial) downloaded to a trial win10 version and edited with universal editor.

This bug is getting really old now. It makes Realms incredibly difficult to use. Why am I paying money for something that means some players are unable to play until we do the manual fix? It's not even like it's a rare occurrence. We've already had to fix it twice today after our End spawn was in a dead chunk, and when I rejoined afterwards, 2/3 of the portal to exit the End were in dead chunks. Are you kidding me Mojang? How bloody difficult is it to make a functional game feature?

The issue seems to be limited to Realms as our "fix" is basically just exporting the map, hosting it on a different multiplayer server, getting affected players to join that world, then uploading that file back to the Realm. This takes about 5-10 minutes every time this bug occurs. This method doesn't even remove the dead chunks, it just seems to move them to another location for another person to get trapped by in a few days. If the issue is limited to the Realm rather than the map file (as I suspect as the same map on a different server doesn't have issues), what good is uploading the map file going to do?

This issue should be fixed in 1.12.1.

Still Happens in 1.12.1.

I have had this happen in 1.12.1 as well, this report needs reopened!

Reopened based on the comments above - once again, if someone can provide a copy of the world where this is happening, it would help us identify the issue more quickly.

I'm having the same issue on Minecraft PE Android version 1.12.1 (but also before the last update). I go from a secondary overworld portal to my nether portal, and it works fine. But if I then immediately go back through the nether portal to get to my main overworld portal, it gets stuck on "building terrain". I'm forced to close and restart the app, after which I will respawn outside ten blocks above my main overworld portal. Anyway here's a link to my world, let me know if there's anything missing:

We're having this issue with my friends' Realm. I'm playing on Windows 10, others are playing on Win10, Android and Switch.

I am baffled as to why Mojang have decided to merge all the other issues into this issue, because it is NOT exclusively caused by exiting a nether portal. It happened to me just wandering about the world and I came across a chunk that refused to load. I tried to exit and rejoin and now I cannot get into the server at all.

I am not the owner so I cannot provide a world file for you. I'll ask the owner if he can provide it.

And let me reiterate what others have said. Loading a backup IS NOT A SOLUTION. If this doesn't get resolved soon then I think the owner of this Realm should be entitled to a refund, and I will be encouraging him to pursue one. This is completely unacceptable.

migrated

Do you still need a World File for this issue?  Just happened with me on my Realm when playing with someone on Xbox One X (myself on Windows 10).  Noticed a section of World hadn't loaded to headed over to take a look.  Note, this didn't happen after exiting a nether portal (though we do have one setup).

Realm is bigger than 10Mb so link here:  https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ajy6hjKYfC5en9JPUpLo8pxw6z44kw?e=mg3gcg

>  it is NOT exclusively caused by exiting a nether portal

Yep, I was at a woodland mansion approx 19,500 blocks away from home. Died after destroying my bed and when the spawn chunk loaded a whole bunch around it refused to load. Had to restore a backup of the realm and try again

migrated

Had the issue while exploring, not related to a portal. We simply reached an area that wouldn't continue building terrain, so we tried logging out and back in, but we became stuck at "Building Terrain." After about 10 minutes, my wife tried logging in again and it seemed to work for a few minutes and then hard-locked her entire PC, forcing a hard reboot. Link to downloaded realm:

@unknown - Thanks for the world copy. Can you give an approximate location of the world that was causing an issue?

migrated

Happening to me in 1.12.1 on Realms running on iOS. Never had this bug in any previous Realm world, but now it happens pretty much every time on this one. So much for my shortcut to the XP grinder.

Portal A and B are only about 10 blocks apart on the nether-side, and they are the only two portals in the world at this point. It doesn’t matter which one I go through first, but when I try to return from the nether to the over world, I get the infinite “loading terrain” screen. I discovered that killing the game and re-logging does not solve the problem (still infinite “loading terrain” screen), but Closing the realm by taking it down/offline and then re-Opening it fixes the problem. After doing that, I always end up spawning on the surface above the destination portal, even though both portals are under ground. This bug makes using the nether as a shortcut unworkable. Really frustrating...

migrated

Having this issue on Xbox One S. Playing splitscreen and when returning from the nether we both get stuck on the generating terrain screen. Found a work around of logging out and back in again but then get spawned in a different location from the original overworld nether portal. Have been trying to research how to fix this and it seems that many other people are having the same issue but no resolution has been provided. Does anyone else seem to know how to fix this issue??

AlexanderJ.

I experienced this error for the first time in 14.2 ... but: after 4 to 5 crashes, the portals worked again. (???)

migrated

I have this problem on the PS4 Bedrock version after the last update ( 2.03 ) but only when playing split screen.

I have the same problem in my survival world: (Windows 10 Edition)

Sometimes I get the same "infinite loading screen" when exiting the nether and after restarting the game I get spawned a few blocks away (but on the terrain).

I have the bug on PC V1.14.30. 100% repeatable on an exported world, use the following link.
https://we.tl/t-2vR8DU0fY3
1 - Load the world & you will end up in the Nether. 2 - Use the portal to reach the overworld (this bit works). 3 - turn around & use the portal to re-enter the Nether and the game freezes at "Building Terrain".
Hope this helps get it fixed.
If the link gets deleted, post back as I'm watching this bug & will re-upload.

Auldrick

@unknown: I tried to reproduce the problem using your world in Win 10 v1.14.30. I tried it 5 times, and it worked properly every time. So there must be some condition that triggers it for you but which is different for me. Are you maybe running this world on Realms or a Bedrock Dedicated Server instance? I tested it as an only player. Did you test with other players in the world, and if so can you reproduce it when you're alone?

We had a similar problem long ago with getting stuck on the Building Terrain screen when going through an end gateway. I discovered at that time that the game had finished teleporting me correctly, it had just failed to update the screen to show me in the world again. If I minimized the window and restored it, it forced the game to redraw the screen, correctly, so it was a faster workaround than exiting and reloading. If you wouldn't mind, could you see if that works for this bug?

migrated

@Auldrick

First I verified that loading the world and following my instructions (go to overworld then back to nether) cause the lockup. It does.

Then, while the 2nd use of the portal produced the "Building terrain lockup" freeze, I minimized the window then restored it and for me Minecraft remained frozen. Neither a ALT+TAB nor a minimise window avoided Minecraft being frozen until I closed then re-opened the game.

Is this of any help? If I've missed any aspect of your question, let me know. 🙂

Auldrick

Are you running the world on Realms or a Bedrock Dedicated Server instance? Were you alone in the world or were there other players?

Too bad about the minimizing/restoring not working. I was hoping we could use that as a workaround.

Same problem but in reverse,Infinite World loading upon entering the nether, however i'm stuck at world loading but can hear ghast flying from time to time.

First times entering the nether was fine, but i decided to link a new portail all the way up on bedrock in the nether, and the bug started upon creating that new portal.

I destroyed the old one in an attemp to leave only one portal active but i don't work, still get stuck on infinite world loading.Alt-f4 the game and login back in get you into the nether fine, but it's frustrating to have to do it every time.

@Auldrick. I am running the world on my stand alone PC & I allow 3 other players on the same LAN to play. All my comments so far are when I was the only one playing. The last time all 4 household members were on the world I was not getting the loading problem so I do not know if they have the same problem or not.

migrated

A savegame from about a week earlier had me getting the freeze after using the same portal to go back to the overworld. After closing & reopening Minecraft I appeared about 10 or 15 blocks from the overworld portal outside the "house" built around it. But that freeze disappeared a few days later only to be replaced by the freeze problem of re-entering the nether.

migrated

We have the same issue here, and we can provide the world file if it helps.  Two portals near to each other in the Nether, but when exiting through one of them the game sticks on Building Terrain for quite some time.  Another player in the same game will see the victim appear in the portal in the overworld, and can even move them around by teleporting them, but "Building Terrain" persists.

The error only occurs when leaving the Nether, and only leaving the nether through one of the two portals, but it occurs every time you do so.

migrated

I am playing on ps4 bedrock edition 1.14.41 and this happening to me too. Every time i go from nether to overworld it will stay at loading screen, i can hear sounds so the game is not frozen or crashing just stuck at building terrain loading screen. I am using a 128x texture pack.

migrated

Some additional information – we were also able to replicate the bug if you die in the nether and return to a bed that is in the same area as the portal we can't exit through.  We can die and return to other beds in other areas, and to that bed from the overworld, but not that bed from the nether.

Might not be strictly portal-related.

migrated

I’m currently playing on iOS version 1.14.30, and today I attempted to correctly link my nether portal since the coordinates of the portal in the nether aren’t exactly the right coordinated for the one in the overworld. I thought I linked them and everything was working until I tried to leave the nether, and all that would show up is “building terrain” for a long time. I’ve had the problem before, but it wasn’t every single time I tried to leave the nether. I clear out of the app by then, and it’ll spawn me in random places by or on top of my house and it’s getting annoying. I’m also planning on making a villager breeder and trading hall soon, and I hope that process doesn’t get postponed because of this.

[Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay)

@unknown - if you are able to provide a test world / copy where where this is happening that would be most helpful.

  • On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.

  • On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds

  • On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)

If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

Yes, I think this should show it. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1AB3JKhBBpcLaDDOsVAtQTgY7lkmnB8wi

The portal at overworld coords 167, -267 on a floating raft was linked to one in the nether.  Leaving the nether through that linked portal, or respawning at any bed on the raft (from the nether only) freezes upon loading into the overworld.

We've tried this with no resource packs loaded as well.  Thank you!

Experiencing the same issue in Minecraft bedrock on Android (1.14.30), survival world, non realm.
Whenever I exited the first portal I made, it would be stuck on generating terrain and wouldn't load, so I had to restart the app, and I would end up in the overworked, a few blocks away from the portal.
I assumed there was something wrong with that one and decided to move the portal a few chunks away and tried it out. This time I could exit the portal without it getting stuck on the loading screen, BUT I encountered several non loading chunks. And this covered a lot of area. Changing the render distance didn't help either.

[Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay)

@unknown - Thank you so much for the test world - I can confirm that in the latest beta version, that portal works correctly, and that you can safely respawn on a bed that it placed next to the portal also.

@unknown - If you would also like to provide a copy the world for us to test please feel free. We also believe that the chunk loading error has been fixed in the latest beta, as described in MCPE-63268.

migrated

Yep, I can't trigger the bug anymore in the latest beta, you're right.  Thank you very much for that.  I also experienced that chunk loading bug once or twice while posting, but it was so infrequent that I couldn't replicate it reliably.  AFAIK it's fixed in the latest beta.

We run with a couple switch players, so for now we'll wait for nether plans until the beta goes live. Thanks again!

GoldenHelmet

I've tested in 1.14.30 in the test world provided by Alec Dundes in iOS on an iPhone 8 and in Windows 10 on a PC. On both devices, the bug occurs when render distance is set > 10, and goes away when render distance is set to 8 or 10.

migrated

I'm experiencing something like this, but with a twist at the end. I was playing in my friends world. The bug is all the same until I restart the game. After restarting it I try to join my friend, but for my surprise I can't join him. I tried every thing, but nothing works. I tried with another account and it worked, so the bug is only form my main account. I#m playing on PS4 and my friend too btw.

Can confirm. What is strange is that on a realm it is fine, but when I download the realm this happens.

migrated

Can confirm on retail version 1.14.3, and the 1.16.0.51 beta. I have had many players report to me that they have experienced this bug. Thus it should be fixed as soon as possible due to the mass amount of players, servers, and realms this affects.

migrated

this happened on a realm for me

migrated

Hi folks. My daughters are playing on PS4, offline, and have come across a similar problem. When the player who created the world attempts to enter the Nether portal, that player's game freezes with the "Building terrain" screen showing. Sound continues but nothing else happens and the character cannot move forward or back (or indeed do anything else. The PS button on the controller still works, but Options for example does not.) The guest player can freely enter and leave the same portal without experiencing anything out of the ordinary. Shutting down Minecraft, turning off the PS4 (as in, really off) and turning it on again has no effect.

I've never tried accessing files on the PS4 so I have no idea how to attach the world to this email. Besides, the system says it's 30 MB, you don't necessarily want me doing that!

migrated

Same issue exiting the Nether on Nintendo Switch. Leaving the Nether results in player 1 or 2 screen showing Building Terrain indefinitely.

migrated

Same issue here, whenever i exit the nether the game infinitely says “generating world” “building terrain”. I tried waiting it out but it seems the only solution is the quit the game completely and reload. This bug makes my world unplayable. I remember ONE time this bug didn’t occur in my world and i was able to load back into the overworld but there was a chunk of my overworld that was not loading and this also resulted in me quiting the game and reloading.

migrated

Aidan mentioned an additional issue above that I my world is also experiencing - when a player is able to load back into the overworld, there is a large chunk of the overworld that is not being drawn. The player can walk onto this empty space, and see what they have mined below them.

migrated

I play on Xbox one and this in now happening every time i try to leave the nether. This is happening in a world that used to be a realm, but I downloaded to my xbox. The world was also created around a week ago (so it isnt an old corrupted world). Everything listed above has been happening as well with the chunks not being loaded.

migrated

an confirm that this bug also happens in the latest version on the Nintendo Switch (v1.14.30) and Minecraft: Pocket Edition (v1.14.30). Same bug happens in a survival world; 1 portal works fine and another one doesn't.

migrated

I started expierencing this issue aswell on ps4.

After reading the comments I saw you should change the render distance. For me this worked!

I changed render distance back to 8 and I can enter and exit the linked portals normally again!

migrated

I have this same issue on my Realm, where I can go through the portal, but my friend always gets stuck. This happens to me when I or him go to the End as well. Sometimes the game just crashes on him on the loading screen, and the other day when he got into the portal, his screen wasn't even getting all squiggly and purplish from the portal block  meaning the game wasn't even trying to teleport him. This is a serious bug that needs to be fixed

migrated

This is also occurring for me on PS4. My main nether portal (built first and closest to spawn coordinates) transports me to the nether fine, but when using that one to return to the overworld, it takes forever to build terrain and when it finally loads, part of the world isn't rendered.

My other portal (1000+ blocks away) works fine but still loads slowly. Both portals were linked to the correct nether coordinates manually.

migrated

Affects 1.14.3 on Nintendo Switch. This bug occurred on a singe player world, using split screen with two players.

migrated

This still affects PS4. Going into the nether works fine, but I always get stuck on "building terrain" once I come back. Has anyone heard anything about them fixing this?

migrated

This affects Windows 10 Edition 1.14.30 (PC). I am hosting the world, five other people have been on it, (me hosting from a PC, two on iOS and two on Xbox One). When I started experiencing issues, the world was anywhere from 45MB to 48MB in size and one other person was on there with me (playing from an Xbox One.

I entered the portal from my base and got stuck on building terrain. I let it sit for a minute and then Alt-F4ed. When I got back on the world, I was on the other end of the portal in the nether. I went back through the portal and landed in the overworld without issue. Going back in the portal worked fine, then going back to the overworld worked fine. After that, I get stuck on building terrain when I enter the nether portal from my base. I have not tested with other portals. I have tried this without anyone else online. My friend on Xbox One does not experience this problem.

The tl;dr is every time I restart the world after getting stuck on building terrain, I can go back to the overworld, to the nether again, back to the overworld, and then attempting to go to the nether again results in getting stuck on building terrain. I have reproduced this cycle five times.

Computer Specs:

Ryzen 5 3600

RTX 2060 Super

16GB DDR 3200MHz RAM

500GB SSD (Minecraft is stored on this)

Potential fix ahead: I have a free trial of Realms active right now. I tried it and my brother had issues joining due to parental controls issues, so I had to host the world from my PC instead. I decided to upload the world to the Realm for the heck of it, and everything worked properly on the realm. Upon redownloading the world from the realm, the issue was gone. It's not feasible for everyone experiencing this to buy realms (especially since some are experiencing it on realms), but if you have a free trial available, it is worth a shot.

I still have the world file from before I uploaded it to realms, and I just confirmed that the issue is still happening before I exported the world. Download link below:

Overworld-side Portal Coordinates: -486, 64, -403

Nether-side Portal Coordinates: -76, 84, -47

Best of luck with fixing the problem here and let me know if something goes wrong with the download link.

GoldenHelmet

It seems that for each world affected by this bug, there is a different render distance threshold at which the bug occurs. As far as I can tell, it depends entirely on the world and not the device running the world.

Jarl-Penguin added a comment - 14/Mar/20 9:21 AM
Can confirm. What is strange is that on a realm it is fine, but when I download the realm this happens.

This is because realms have a render distance limit of 12.

For the world provided by Zachary Mallol, the bug occurs with render distance >= 32, and it goes away with render distance <= 28.

For the world provided by Alec Dundes the bug occurs with render distance >= 12.

For the world provided in the description by the original poster of this report, I cannot reproduce the bug at my max render distance of 44. So, it seems that some causes of this bug were fixed by the fix for MCPE-49778 in 1.12.1.

migrated

This makes me not able to build on my nether. I hate it!

Having this bug on PS4  (april 5th 2020). I only play on local worlds. Only one world is affected by it so far and if i make a copy of it i have the same issue. I changed the render distance from 22 chunks to 18 and this has solved the problem for now. Texture packs seem to have no influence on the issue.

migrated

Having the same issue, Bedrock PC  Windows 10. Only one of my local worlds is effected by this. If I change my render distance down to 32 from 40 it stops.

GoldenHelmet

It looks like Alec Dundes's world is no longer available, and I am unable to reproduce the bug on any of the older test worlds provided above that are still available to download. If we could  we get another test world where the bug is reproducible that would be very helpful, so that the developers can compare more than one world.

migrated

I was going to say this must have been a different problem from mine, since when I tried it on the beta build at the time it worked reliably, but we haven't used the world in a bit and when I loaded it up again to test it the problem's back.  I shared the folder again with the below link.  Sorry it's a bit large.

I have the exact same issue!

migrated

I've also experienced this issue across two different Windows 10 computers. I've reached out to the realm owner to get the world file to share, but in the meantime, here are my observations:

  • Upon creating a linked portal in the Nether and exiting the first time, an adjacent chunk in the overworld appeared not to load correctly (invisible blocks)

  • If I exit the Nether through the same portal again, it gets stuck at "building terrain" indefinitely

  • I attempted to change the draw distance but apparently never found the right number.

  • Other players were able to enter the realm and attempted to "rescue" me by destroying the Nether portal in the overworld. This was not effective in the near term.

  • Sometime within the following 24 hours, with no other intervention, I was able to reenter the realm. Nonfunctional Nether portals had been created on the world surface (original portals were deep underground). This may have been due to the portal destruction, though.

  • I attempted to test the Nether portal again, and had the same missing chunk upon exiting the first time again, so I haven't been back.

Hope some of that is helpful in tracking this down. I'd love to make a shortcut through the Nether for everyone to use, but as of now, I'm advising everyone to stay out just in case.

migrated

I and Everyone on my realm has this issue. However if we close the game and rejoin we spawn in the overworld a few blocks away from the portal. Attaching my world wouldn't do much because I downloaded the world and booted it up and it worked fine.

migrated

I’m having this problem on PS4 as well. Seems to be worse when attempting multiplayer on my local world.” Portal A” works to nether but not to overworld. “Portal B” does not work to nether but does work to overworld. “Portal C” works unreliably both ways.

GoldenHelmet

The reason you spawn 5-10 blocks away from the portal you got stuck in when you reload is that the game has a “danger zone” algorithm to prevent you spawning in certain places such as in portals or lava.

@Tyler Ross I find your details interesting—could we get a world download or at least the coordinates of your portals A, B, andC? Also, have you tried reducing render distance?

migrated

Still experience these issues on Bedrock PS4. It was very inconsistent first, where you had a 25% chance of NOT getting stuck. Now, it's either getting stuck on "building terrain" or you do get back to the overworld but there are several chunks not loading, no matter how long you wait.

Based on what me and my friends experience it seems to be a chunk loading issue, since we now have a 100% rate of getting stuck on building terrain OR chunks not loading until quitting and reloading the save file. Really sucks, since we can't even use the nether this way. Any temporary fixes we can try until this gets sorted in an update?

migrated

I am experiencing the issue on XBOX ONE as well as my android phone in a Realm.

Every time, I had to stop and restart the game. Then I end up in my world but next to a different portal far away from the portal I actually built.

GoldenHelmet

@Dan did you try the workaround in the Description section above?

migrated

@GoldenHelmet I have, with a varied amount of success. It does seem to help when I put it at the lowest option, but still not consistently enought to say it fixes the problem. Still, it's better than nothing, so thanks!

The inconsistency of the matter makes it very difficult to understand what exactly is causing this, but it really limits the use of the Nether in our world.

GoldenHelmet

@Dan the issue with invisible terrain is being tracked at MCPE-63268 and it is fixed the current beta version. Although the issues co-occur for some users, this ticket is specifically tracking the issue of getting stuck on the brown loading screen when leaving a portal. The render distance workaround should either let you past the loading screen, or not. Are you saying that is inconsistent?

migrated

I am having this issue on PS4, my main portal does this almost every time i return to the overworld. I have another portal that has never done this.

I just tried the walk around, i repeatedly went back and forth through the portal. I turned my render distance all the way down to 4 chunks. The portal worked fine for several attempts but did eventually crash.

I am using no resource packs in this local world. Also I personally have not had this issue on Widows 10 Beta, nor Java, only on my PS4.

migrated

I have this issue in my world on windows 10. Reducing the render distance does help.

I noticed the game appears to be running at least somewhat while stuck with brown loading screen, based on hearing portal noises and gast noises on that screen and the fact that If I close the game as soon as I see the brown screen I'll be in the overworld upon re-opening it, but If i linger on the brown screen before closing the window the game loads me in to the nether when I open it, so auto save might be working too.

I'll also add that I first encountered this bug with my render distance manually set to 50 chunks and the portal on the nether end was extra wide; reducing to 44 and building the portal to be standard size after rebooting didnt fix anything at first, but setting render to 8 chunks did.

Also before Even finishing this message I loaded in to the nether just fine with render back up to 44, but tried it again and got the glitch... but this time I left it on the screen as I was typing (btw I'm on a different pc to type this, game is not minimized fyi) and after about 45 seconds the game actually loaded! So TL;DR Another workaround Might just be to wait patiently on the brown screen lol

Edit: pushing a pigman in the portal before going to the nether seems to prevent the bug for me too, but just for 1 trip

migrated

Same issue on my Xbox One Bedrock. It's been a constant issue but seems to change based on the locations of the nether portal.

Before I made a nether portal that placed me in a different part of the world when I exited, and when exited, part of my world wouldn't render. In that part was my house where my original nether portal was located. The only way I've been able to fix the rendering issue (as when as the loading screen issue later) is by exiting the game and reopening it, the good thing is that it still saves all the changes made to my world before exiting.

After relocating my portal in the nether to connect with the one in the overworld, I started to not be able to load into the world at all, having the dirt block loading screen.

Since before when I loaded through a nether portal that was in a different location, I think that because the chunk that the nether portal is in won't load, it stays stuck on the loading screen indefinitely (Waited an hour to load but wouldn't load in still).

migrated

Same for me, but using a different portal far away fixes it. I think that there are too many mobs in the nether so it crashes

migrated

The way I found a fix to this problem is to set your render distance to 10 or lower. That way, you can enter the Nether without the game soft-locking on the loading screen.

migrated

Here is a copy of my world where this issue has been encountered too.

Portal coordinates in overworld: -209, 63, 181

Game does not crash when render distance is set to 8

GoldenHelmet

After looking at JH's world I decided to try a freshly generated world with same seed and a portal in the same location. It produced the bug at the same render distance, > 8. All I did in that world was fly to the coordinate and build the portal. This rules out a number of possible causes, such as anything to do with entities, items, or blocks crafted/placed by the player.

Update: with JH's world seed and coordinates, the overworld loads after 30 s on the loading screen with render distance = 10 on my iPhone. At render disdtance = 12 it doesn't load after 10 minutes. (On Windows 10 I can't select a render distance of 10.)

Update 2: This bug is triggered simply by certain coordinates! On a whim I tried building a portal at the same coordinates as JH's in a nearly-empty flat world, and it triggered the bug! His coordinates also trigger the bug in DNS Crypt's world. It seems to have nothing to do with the particular world or seed. The coordinates are -202, 63, 184 (I think the coords in his comment above might have been the player location at logout.)

DNS Crypt's portal at 125, 71, -263 triggers the bug at render = 16 for me, but not at render = 12. In a fresh world an overworld portal at this location generated a nether portal at 24, 88, -33 and the bug triggered going into the nether through that portal. After I broke that portal and built one matching the coordinates in his world, 27, 44, -42, I was able to travel to the nether without triggering the bug.

Also tried the X/Z coords from Alec Dundes' world (167, 65, -267) in a fresh flat world, and the bug triggered at render = 12, just like in his world. I waited a while based on my experience with LH's world, and the overworld did load after about 30 s on render = 12. At render = 14 it would not load at all.

All of this is confirms the comment above that moving the portal location could be another way to work around this bug.

Final note: in some of my tests today I experienced portals working the first time they were used in each direction, and then triggering the bug on subsequent uses, just as others have commented above. I also experienced the x-ray chunks bug every time I went into the nether from Alec Dundes' overworld coordinates.

I am having this issue on PS4, I don't know how to upload my world but the seed is 1469530478. This happens nearly every time I return to the over world through my first portal at 227,74,-190, turning my render distance all the way down helps it to not happen very often. my other portals at 900,81,-2621 and 154,67,3089 have not ever caused the crash that i can remember, regardless of render distance.

this issuse has been a major bug for me as it has been doing this to me in my realm and offline at any x/z cords on both my xbox one and android phone. It happens when i go into or out off the dimensions as both the nether and the end has the same bug issuse. As well as it also crashes my realm and forces a rollback on the realm.

I had the same issue on Minecraft iOS. Went into the nether for my first time to try and get blaze rods. After repeated entering and leaving the nether portal, it just got weirder and weirder. The nether world stopped loading at all and my GUI was all gone. I couldn’t play as it was literally just a blank screen. Logging in and out did not fix the issue. I have pictures below. my world was unplayable so I waited a day. logged in next day, same issues. Two days later I logged in, and I was in the nether still. Blocks were loading partially, so I was able to find my nether portal, but could not get through to the overworld. I waited another day, tried again and finally made it back to the overworld, after 3 days of not being able to play.

however, now my overworld has occasionally has issues I saw in the nether, of blocks not loading, the screen being sans GUI.

I have actually had the same experience as Eugene Talmadge on iOS--and he describes it well. I just didn't elaborate b/c I was trying to focus on the main issue of this report. I hope that if the devs can fix the stuck at loading screen issue, then the other loading and rendering problems on iOS related to problem portals will be cleared up as well.

This bug should be fixed in the latest beta version, and the fix will be included in a future update when that is ready for full release (no specific date can be given). We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix has been fully released.

If anybody is still able to reproduce the issue in the latest beta version, please provide updated repro steps.

I commented on the closed due to inactivity "MCPE-42542" - I managed to encounter this with overworld coords 574, 59, -329 with chunk rendering of 10. I did not get the loading screen though, the portal just did nothing when I walked in and out of it.
Thanks, I reduced it to 6 and managed to get out of the nether. (Win 10 edition, 1.14.60).

@Emma P I have experienced what you describe (not being able to exit the nether due to the portal not functioning) in conjunction with the symptoms Eugene Talmadge describes a few comments above. When I tried the overworld coordinates you've given, I did get stuck at "building terrain" once (2nd of about 10 attempts) going from the overworld to the nether, but I had no problems going from the nether to the overworld. So I think in your case it's the nether coordinates that are bad, but in all my tests overworld --> nether is less consistent in producing the bug.

Windows 10 OS: I had this issue, but only with one out of three users on the server. We destroyed the portal in both the overworld and in the nether and that fixed the issue.

made a large (192 max portals) goldfarm and encountered this issue with every nether portal that is linked to the goldfarm in the current beta 1.16.0.60. This happened in survival and creative. Don't know if its the coordinates because I built in an entirely different location each time. I believe it may be the number of portals

Yeah, That happened to me on my Xbox one. Although it crashed when I entered the nether, & I immediately died when I was able to go to the nether (I just had to exit my world & go back in it). I'll have to send a video on what I mean. Later anyways.

Same issue for me, but not with 1.16 beta I'm just on Bedrock 1.15. In the overworld, trying to get to the nether via a previously linked portal, and it sits at "Generating Terrain"

I have the same issue on an iPad Mini 4 A1538 running iPad OS 13.4.5 Beta, but its not just in those coordinates, but in all of my worlds, and at all coodinates. I'm running Minecraft 14.60

I can confirm @Israel Brooks issue on Xbox One. Changing the nether portal location also doesn't seem to help.

Edit: I have resolved the issue by finding another spot and removing blocks from around portals on both ends.

migrated

I don't know if this is related but I can't join my realm after going to the nether and coming back, I get stuck on the nether portal background with "Loading resource packs"

migrated

I have had the same issue on my worlds, most notably on my realm

migrated

I just started having this issue. I figured out it was because the nether portal was covered by blocks on all sides. I removed all the nether blocks from around the portal and it fixed it.

ok so my daughter downloaded minecraft worked great but now it won't open at all can anybody help me get it working again I'm afraid to deleted and reinstall cause I don't want to pay for it again. I'm not all in to computers that much. So any help would be great.

Auldrick

@unknown: You don't need to worry about having to pay for it again. Your official license to the game is tracked by the Store, not your device, and uninstalling won't affect it. However, if the game won't start and you've given it enough time (up to 2 minutes, depending on your Wi-Fi/LAN and internet connections), that's not normal. Reinstalling might fix it, or might not, and in the latter case you might be experiencing a bug.

It sounds like you have a different problem than the one this report is about, so I assume that you just picked this report to ask for help from the community. Please note that the bug tracker isn't a help and support forum, it's a place for reporting bugs. If you just need help and advice, a better place to ask is a community support site such as the MCPE sub-reddit or the Minecraft Discord.

I have resolved my issue on Xbox One X by turning the render distance all the way down to 22 chunks. May not be the ideal solution, but I have gotten used to it and it always works. Also, the chart provided did not work for me. I might try relocating my portal again, but for now this solution works for me.

I have this kind of problem on Android. My solution is i turn down my render to 6 chunks (yes, its bummer, but reducing my lag, awesome) and when I want to go back to overworld, I wondering around my portal (in nether, hope I load the chunks properly imo bcoz i travel far enough) for couple seconds and exit the portal.

GoldenHelmet

I've retested some of the listed coordinates in 1.16 and it appear that this issue is fixed.

migrated

I am having this issue (version 1.16.4).  It is intermittent but persistent and seems to be occurring more frequently over time.  Overworld coordinates are 165, 84, 2775 and corresponding Nether coordinates are 29, 68, -346 with render distance set to 8.

GoldenHelmet

@Chris Lemelin: I tried your coordinates and was able to use nether portals there successfully several times on render distance 44. It did take several seconds to load the overworld when going through. While that may seem unexpected, it is not the bug that was tracked on this ticket and fixed in 1.16. The bug tracked here was that the game would never load and had to be force-closed.

Please make a new report for your issue if you still feel that something is wrong.

I'm having a similar issue (ver 1.19). Instead of exiting the nether, it happens when I enter the nether. The loading screen freezes, so I close my game. When I go back in, my location is the same as when in the overworld, but in the nether (My portal is at ~6,500, ~60, and that is my location when I load my world and spawned in the nether). I've tried reducing my chunk radius, which was working until it happened again. I went from 18 chunk radius to 6.

I use machine translation because I am not good at English.

I'm having a similar issue (ver 1.19.30).

The World is the Realms.

Nether Portal - Game freezes on Load Screen and then takes player to same X,Z coordinates in Nether as were in Overworld after restarting.

I have entered the portal several times since then and cannot reproduce the problem.

Sorry, I found out afterwards that it is tracked here
