Steps to reproduce:
Own two Xbox accounts on the same device.
Open or create world in Minecraft.
Use second controller to Join as Player 2.
Sign in as second account.
Expected result:
Second player joins as their own account.
Actual result:
Second player joins as ‘MainUser(2)’
Additional details:
All accounts other than ‘MainUser' on the device will lead to the ‘MainUser(2)’ guest account. Exiting second account and adding guest will open as ‘MainUser (1)’ according to the name in the top right corner of the individual screen. All accounts intentionally opened as guest will be seen as “Player” to others in the world. It is also possible to get ‘MainUser(2)’ and ‘MainUser (2)’ to occur at the same time. Due to strange world-saving issues in my past (my one world has had game-breaking issues several times over several years, getting worse in the more recent updates, particularly 1.21.80), the unintentional guest account in my main world spawned in at the location I was in when I had a massive world sync error in several days/saves/world copies ago, with all of the items the main player had at the time. This unintentionally duplicated these particular items.
This issue existed in several 1.21.90 betas but I failed to report it as I assumed it was exclusive to the Preview Version. It is not, and I can no longer play on my Minecraft world with my sibling. This is completely game breaking, and I hope it can get a hotfix.
I have a video of this that I will attach via YouTube link in comments due to size limit here.

I’m having the same issue. I made a post right after you posted because originally when I looked there were none
This link above (or perhaps below) is my video documenting this issue. I am sorry to the community that I was too lazy to document this earlier, but I hoped it would just disappear like many other strange things in Preview Edition.
important to note: I am on Xbox Series X. Can anyone confirm this for other Xbox platforms?
I am also on Xbox Series X
Same on playstation splitscreen
Same for us. Using XBox Series S. I know this is thing to sound harsh, and I don't mean it as harsh as it sounds, but how does something like this happen? Don't they load up the game and test it out before releasing in? I'm so confused. Also, if you turn vibrent visuals off, when the second player joins it automatically turns it back on when they load in. Hopefully that helps track down the issue. A fix as quick as possible would be appreciated. My family was excited to jump on together and play the update this morning.
We just noticed that too on PS5 when vv disabled it clicks back on when second user joins or leaves
I also noticed the re-enabling of vibrant visuals, but didn't put two and two together until reading this.
Additionally, here is my link to a second video showing a re-enacting of what happened when I first noticed this bug. This demonstrates that the secondary player is not exclusively starting a fresh profile, but rather pulling from something in the level.dat or wherever. https://youtu.be/Z7l9nCkHIsg?si=Jc_Ggi6Rzulff5gL
Will test shortly and move the secondary as currently it appears at spawn
I have the same problem.
Having the same problem, needs a hot fix asap
This needs to be fixed ASAP!
Happened to me as well. My fiance’s account shows as a guest even though she logged into her account, has empty inventory no XP etc. However, her skin still shows up on the guest for some reason. Hoping this gets fixed and can get her inventory resynced.
Is an issue on xbox series x
I just tried playing playing with my kids and the 3rd account makes the game crash and sends you back to the home screen.
I have the same problem.
The second account doesn’t log in as their account. It appears it may be doing it as a guest account.
The third account completely crashes the game and enters a very odd state where their login becomes main screen and attempts to ‘load’ another. It just fails.
I have 3 kids and we play together. We tried to do it today and my eldest freaked out they lost their armor and all their inventory (using Xbox account as sign in).
Please provide remedies for this.
Having the same issue, as the second player logging on and not being able to access any of my stuff is super upsetting! Was really excited to play the new update. Has anyone found a fix?
Hopefully there is a fix soon, we are sad to lose half of our progress on a year old world
It's been a full day, can we please get an update?
For those still reading this, you can still sorta experience split-screen multi-player if you sign into a world via online connection from a separate device. You will join as a friend or via LAN, and you will have all of your stuff, which you can then put in a chest for the split-screen player to use. HOWEVER, do NOT EVER log off of a world when a guest account has items in its inventory, and don't try to collect or interact with pets. Guest accounts tend to change their “Player IDs” all the time, and when they do, everything you had on the previous iteration of the guest account will be locked in the save file forever. The only way to avoid this eventuality is to leave your items in a chest every time you are about to log off.
A bit of a bodgy work around and one crash away from losing stuff so not really worth the risk I reckon
Same issue here.
Can confirm this issue also exists on Xbox One. Did they not playtest this update at all?
Still having this same issue. Cannot log in split-screen on my own account. It keeps logging me in as (Main User)2 and spawning me at the Main User's world spawn with no inventory.
Same split screen issue here on Xbox Series X. ‘MainUser’ logs in and opens world. Second player presses start and is prompted to select account. Selecting ‘SecondUser’ just loads into the world as MainUser(2).
Confirming it does this on ps5 too
Same here on Series X.
Same series x
Bug REALMS-13024 was incorrectly marked as a duplicate of this bug. It is a different issue. It is unclear if they are related on the backend, but the behavior is different on our Xbox. The issue in REALMS-13024 prevents a second account from joining split screen on a realm at all. It throws the error and causes first player to leave the realm and being completely unable to play together. The bug here (222048) appears to be related to assigning the second player as guest (it seems on a local world) but they can still play.
Noticed then even when connected on guest account splitscreen if either player brings up the player list it hangs Thier session and have to restsrt
I am also having this bug/issues; Joining with a second account (my child’s) it just joins as my username (2) instead of their account.
I am also having this issue. It creates a 2nd profile of my fiances and its already on a other device so we get kicked.
I am also having this issue, unable to continue playing with my partner on splitscreen for a while now.
I'm also having this issue. Bedrock edition on xbox series x. Also game reverts to previous version graphics.
Due to this issue, I can’t play with my sibling. Please get this fixed ASAP.
I also play with family members split screen and was devastated to log in today and find that they were connected with a guest account instead with none of their items. We didn't even want to play anymore which is sad because we had talked all day about what we wanted to accomplish. Hoping for a fix soon..
I was excited for the update, tried it out, and was disappointed :(.
It's fixed for me!!!
We noticed on 6/17 after the update this issue occurred on both PS4 and PS5 as well. Just tested again and still seeing the issue.
New, maybe related, issue - one of my kids was playing solo in the realm when we experienced a power outage today. Now when she logs in the realm, it’s not her microsoft account character, but a new character with no items. It seems like her playstation account is overriding the microsoft account. Every other account on the playstation can log in fine when playing solo in the realm.
Tested further, second player has access to their microsoft account end chest, but they do not have their equipment or pockets inventory the exit the game with when playing solo.
Original reporter here: the hotfix 1.21.91 seems to have mostly fixed this problem!
Original/correct character data (including position, inventory, levels, and ender chest) is restored to split-screen functionality! I am on Xbox Series X. This fixed behavior is also true of preview 1.21.100.21
Adding guests intentionally still produces weird behavior. It has incorrect mapping between local guest accounts and usernames appearing in the top right corners as ‘MainUser (1)’ regardless of which guest account or in-game name. Additionally, actual names in-game seem to be “Player” and “Player(2)”, but also sometimes the correct guest account names: ‘MainUser(1)’ and ‘MainUser(2)’. Additionally, “Player” seems to still be the same PlayerID that all signed-in secondary users would get assigned during 1.21.90, which could have been used by accident by an unknowing secondary user who thought they were signed in.
Additional observation:
Sometimes, joining the world in guest accounts in certain orders causes a split-screen player to be added which is not controlled by or assigned to either active controller, forcing the user to join game again and have a useless player remaining onscreen, who can only be removed by kicking from the world players list menu. This is not entirely new to the 1.21.90 cycle.
Skins/Dressing Room are still mildly broken (all secondary users still get the middle skin as selected from maybe the first secondary user to join the world, but are often random default skins), but that is not new to the 1.21.90 cycle.
Some of this strange behavior differs between the 1.21.91 release version and the 1.21.100.21 preview.
Having the same issues since the update
Still waiting playstation hot fix for this issue thanking OP for his update
Hit fix didn't work for ps5
Still waiting on hot fix for ps5
Tested this evening, still the same problem.
I have version 1.21.92 Bedrock on Playstation PS5 and it is still having the second player join as first player (1) even though the second players Playstation username is in the top right corner. It's also interesting that Mojang keeps resolving the Playstation platform version of these bugs and links them back to this one that's for XBOX.
Issue still persists on PS5 after update
Confirmed. (Xbox X btw)
Still having issue with that, on version 1.21.92 PS5
I have the same issue on my ps5 joining a realm on split screen
My kids are having this issue as well
I can’t play splitscreen with my wife on my ps5. I usually am on my account and she is on her’s. Now she just gets logged as a guest.
Still having this issue, the game is also unplayable, lagging all the way, blocks are put down and moved back, impossible to play, split screen doesn't log in, can play as a guest only, plus while i play solo i have new graphics and shaders, when we log on split screen, we are getting old graphics and no shaders
Almost a week and fixed for Xbox but not PlayStation still an issue
I thought we had tested on an offline world last week, but this guest account issue seems to only be affecting us on Realms.
We can login to our offline worlds splitscreen and to our proper accounts.
Only when trying to join our Realm in splitscreen does the second player get dumped intoa guest account.
Split screen local works just fine but split screen in a Realm is busted on PS5 and you can only join as a guest
Our Nintendo Switch 1 recieved the 1.21.92 update today, but the problem persists. The first player connects to our Bedrock Dedicated Server (also updated to 1.21.92) and is correctly logged into their microsoft account, but when a second player is added via split screen, they’re connected as some sort of guest with a name lke first_players_name (1).
Also intersting, the second player’s “pause” screen shows 3 connections all with the first player’s name. The first player’s “pause” screen shows only 2.
I tried resetting the switch from it’s power options menu, which is a workaround for MCPE-190628, but that did not seem to help here.
This is still broken on ps5 Realms on the latest update. I play on a Realms plus world with my family and this is making it impossible to play with my family in a way that properly saves my progress. If it doesn't get resolved soon I will be downloading my Realms world and then canceling the subscription.
Patiently waiting on a fix for PS5! I am headed for surgery on the 7th and part of my healing plan is to stay busy in Minecraft. I play split screen with my partner. Please fix this!
+1 for splitscreen with own accounts in Realms not working on PS5, defaults second player to hostname(1).
Still not working, was working a few weeks ago but new update stopped it
Annoying issue preventing couch coop on realms for ps5. Please fix since it’s pretty crucial feature. Was literally working a week ago
Attempted again today (June 28) on PS4 after installing 1.21.92. Second player still signing in as a guest of first player.
Can we please get a fix, I’m paying for realms just to play with my daughter and can’t play with her at all. This is really frustrating.
This is taking way too long to resolve, I suppose a refund for the realms cost is too much to expect?
Also paying for realms to play as a family with friends and unable to. Seems annoying since while not getting a fix they are teasing the next update
How long does it take to fix it, its getting so crazy, bought realms subscription, cant even play one single minute on my world with friends, its lagging, split screen doesnt work, nothing changed…
Still not working
To clarify fixed in local saves. Still broken in realms
Still not fixed in realms, still logging in as guest. How can this not have been tested before marking as resolved?
Not resolved at all, does this means that they are going to release the fix/patch with the next update? Damn
I can’t tell what may have been fixed in 1.21.93. The original problem still persists on my Nintendo Switch conneting to my bedrock dedicated server. A player who joins via split screen is added to the game as a guest instead of their normal account/character/login.
Still an issue on ps5 with realms.
I am also having this same issue on ps5. Have been for a while.
I am still having this issue as of July 6th on ps5 with realms. Logs in as MyCharName (1) with no inventory.
Still experiencing issue on PS4 in version 1.21.93
Also experiencing this issue on both PS4 and PS5 Versions. Both accounts have PSN and Microsoft accounts properly linked. To verify the issue one of the linked Microsoft accounts used a different device and was able login and join the realm as a 3rd. So we had “User1”, “User1(1), and “User2” (User2 being the different device login). It should just be “User1” & “User2; User2 should get rejected when attempting to login from the other device. It appears that split screen user are not using their Minecraft accounts and are treated as a guest entity.
Still having this issue as of July 7th on both PS4 and PS5 versions when playing on realms.
Having this issue on the Switch as well. We tried for two hours one different fixes. Had to give up, kid had to go to bed.
Same issue here. Xbox series x. Updated mc. My wife is so haply to see the new shade lighting system and we couldnt play together. I wasn’t able to join at all.
The other day the kids had trouble amd got the guest account thing to work.
Would like to see a fix soon
Tested just now and this is still an issue.
6 more days and will be a month unable to play as a family properly
July 12th and having this issue on PS5
July 14th - issue still occurring. Hopefully will get resolved soon.
Still an issue 1.21.94
1.21.94 - Still not fixed
Still broken for PS5. It’s honestly ridiculous how long this has been an issue — we’ve been waiting months, and there’s been zero meaningful progress or updates. This bug is stopping me and my partner from being able to play together, which is the main reason we even use Minecraft. It’s incredibly frustrating that something this fundamental is still unresolved. Please prioritise this.
Also appears to still be an issue here too.
Still an issue on the switch.
Yep, still broken. Checked on PS5 again this evening, patch downloaded yesterday.
Been a month with no Minecraft since we can't play on the family realm together.
Thank you for your patience while we continuing to investigate this issue. We have rolled out some fixes for this as mentioned in the 1.21.92 and 1.21.93 hotfix changelogs, but we are still looking into the comments mentioning that the issue still exists for those playing on Realms.
Please note - it is expected that the additional split screen players may show as guests with a (1) next to the name and not their gamertag, but they should still have their player data (eg inventory).
For those affected, could you please confirm that you and the Realm owner have updated to the latest version available (currently 1.21.94).
If you could also let us know if the host and the split screen guest are signed into their accounts, and what exactly seems to be missing (eg enderchest, personal inventory, player position)
Hi. The version number is 1.21.95.1. This is still for certain a guest user, different inventory, different level and different skin. The first player that logs in gets the proper user, any that log on in split screen after gets a guest user. But the game remembers the guest user that was played the last time so you continue as the same guest if thst makes sense.
PS5
As above, first person to log in has their gamertag, and the second person is on a guest account with no inventory, and at world spawn.
Possibly related/another symptom of the bug's source: Sometimes it shows 2 guest accounts have joined the game. Attempting to interact with the mystery third player/second guest via the menu (eg to view profile, set permissions, or kick them) in these cases causes the game to freeze up and have to be force closed.
We want what we experience in offline worlds right now. I log with controller one with my account and then I go into an offline world. I take controller 2 and log on my wife. We are now split screen with our accounts and items.
I REPEAT: OFFLINE WORLD
————————————————————
if you could do that to Realm just like it was before, it would be greatly appreciated.
It is expected that the additional players on split screen show up with their own gamertag, not as a guest, as we were always able to show up as our own profiles before. And our player profiles have their own inventory and ender chest attached to them that cannot be accessed by the guest account.
The guest account slots also have their own inventory memory and ender chests separate from the official accounts we usually use.
When this bug started happening, everyone who would typically log in to their own profiles on split screen (aside from player) was instead logged in as a guest who started at spawn with zero inventory and we are unable to access the inventory of our usual character on this world, it's been this way for about a month since the happy ghast update. I've downloaded 3 hot fixes since then and none of them have improved this issue on PS5/realms.
It looks like the reason we're are getting signed into guest accounts rather than our own accounts on Minecraft realms is because the game is not allowing the additional split screen players to connect to their Microsoft account. This used to connect automatically as long as the individual profile has been connected to its linked Microsoft account through the app when opened under their own profile.
Sometimes the account needs to be reconnected to its Microsoft account after an update, but this used to be a simple fix in which you would just need to open minecraft under that individual profile as player 1 in order for it to refresh that accounts link to its Microsoft account, and then once you logged in as an additional split screen player later it would remember your account being linked and you could log in as your own gamer tag in any additional split screen player slot with no issues.
This fix to reconnect a console account to its linked Microsoft account doesn't seem to work anymore. The game refuses to connect the additional players to their own linked Microsoft accounts. This is why we are getting logged in as guests instead of our our gamer tags with our own inventory.
Please fix to allow profiles on PlayStation (realms) split screen to link to their Microsoft accounts and access our own character, like we used to always do before. 07/17/2025
To: [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay),
Thank you for your attention to this issue. The previous comment by Amanda C. summarizes the issues pretty well.
My family plays using a realm on our Nintendo switch and we cannot play at this time. No inventory for any players who join via split screen after the first player.
- Version is 1.21.94 on Nintendo switch
- I am the realm owner.
- playing as single player on realm has no issues.
- Local words are unaffected, only realms.
- I believe this started with 1.21.94, but maybe it started with 1.21.80. We have played a few times since June, but I am not sure we ever played split screen on our realm.
- When another player joins it shows: “P1 Game tag (1)” has joined instead of showing their Microsoft account nickname.
If the user was presented with a one-time message about their multiplayer data needs to be updated/moved/synced that would be ok with me.
The previous split-screen behavior from a few months ago would be completely fine.
I am looking forward to another hot-fix to resolve this on Nintendo switch.
Nintendo Switch
Minecraft Client 1.21.94
Bedrock Dedicated Server Version 1.21.95.1
PlayerA with Microsoft account
PlayerB with Microsoft account
Steps to reproduce/demonstrate the problem:
PlayerA starts Minecraft selecting the Nintendo profile linked to their Microsoft account
PlayerA waits on the title screen for their Microsoft account to sign in
PlayerA connects to the server
PlayerA notes that their location, inventory, character skin, and username are as expected, associated with their Microsoft account.
PlayerA disconnects and closes Minecraft.
PlayerB starts Minecraft selecting the Nintendo profile linked to their Microsoft account
PlayerB waits on the title screen for their Microsoft account to sign in.
PlayerB connects to the server.
PlayerB notes that their location, inventory, character skin, and username are as expected, associated with their Microsoft account.
PlayerA picks up a second controller and presses start to join as player 2, initiating split-screen mode
PlayerA selects the same Nintendo profile from step 1, linked to their Microsoft account
PlayerA notes that their location is world spawn - not expected
PlayerA notes that their player skin is not correct
PlayerA notes that their username is PlayerB (1) - not expected
PlayerA notes that their inventory is empty - not expected
PlayerA notes that their ender inventory is empty - not expected
For all intents and purposes, the second player to join has joined as some sort of temporary ad-hoc player, not the player associated with their Microsoft account.
PlayerB presses start and sees under "Players in <Worldname>": their own username (expected), and the PlayerB (1) - not expected
PlayerA presses start and sees under "Players in <Worldname>" and sees 3 total entries: 2 instances of PlayerB as well as PlayerB (1) - not expected
This sounds the same to me as those explaining their experience with Realms.
Please note - it is expected that the additional split screen players may show as guests with a (1) next to the name and not their gamertag, but they should still have their player data (eg inventory).
If you mean that this is a new behavior which is expected since 1.21.90 all I can say is, that seems like a strange change. Why obfuscate second player’s gamertag? If you mean that this is considered normal behavior, I can tell you it is not based on the last year and a half we’ve been playing on my BDS from Nintendo Switch in split screen mode.
Thanks for your attention on this! Hoping it can be resolved soon.
If you mean that this is considered normal behavior, I can tell you it is not based on the last year and a half we’ve been playing on my BDS from Nintendo Switch in split screen mode.
I need to correct/clarify my statement a bit. I can confirm from old server logs that before 1.21.90, when split screen was initiated from Nintendo Switch, what would actually be displayed for the split screen player was their Nintendo account name, not their Microsoft account name. But either way, the “Player1 (1)” thing started at the same time as the other problems in 1.21.90. I mention this detail just in case it helps provide any clue about what changed or where the problem is.
Same issue on PS5 and in both ps4 and ps5 version of the gane application. Worked fine until the Chase the skies update
Mojang: Can you please come with an update to how and when this is going to get a fix? I am not willing to pay for a service that does not work.
I would be curious to know if Mojang has at least been able to reproduce the problem in their environment. The last message from Jay would seem to imply they had not.
PS5 having this problem on all accounts for my realm:
Two players cannot play simultaneously without the second player being assigned a guest account.
Any danger of an update or feedback from Mojang on this issue?
Having the same issue on PS5. I can't currently play split screen with my family.
Having the same issue using PS5 accessing my Realm. Second player loads as 2nd instance of main player. No inventory. Sometimes there is a third instance already in the realm.
This is still occurring. Second account is unable to log in with their Microsoft account, and is instead joined with a guest account.
Having the same issue on PS5. My girlfriend joins me on our Realm and loads in as a guest account <My username (1)>. She used to be able to login with her PS5 username, but is no longer able to. Fortunately, she has been able to retain her position and inventory each time she joins, but it's still frustrating that she doesn't have her unique username.
Same issue on nintendo switch
Same issue on ps5, August 3rd 2025 :(
Player two joins as a random player at spawn eith no inventory or username
Still broken 1.21.100
Still having this issue on PS5, 1.21.100
Hi. I am New in this world and dont know how things worked before. One thing i noticed that in ps4 my children's cant sign in Microsoft account in minecraft. Could this be reason to them joining as quest in realm?
Tested 1.21.100 on my Nintendo Switch. Still does not allow split screen players to load the inventory or microsoft account. Please escalate this bug.
1.21.101 still broken 2 months not able to play as a family
Still broken… we payed for a realm to play as a family and then this darn chase the skies ruined it over night. Sure would be cool if this got fixed. It's starting to feel like splitscreen is going to just get phased out.
I’m about to cancel my realms subscription. I paid for this so that I could backup my kids world but they haven’t been able to play together in a month…
We’re going to cancel our subscription as well as we are no longer able to play as a family.
I just subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online and payed for a realm to be play with my children. Seems that was a waste of money as it is unusable due to this issue…
Ps5 - same issue as reported
Its annoying that stuff dosent tell anything. Are they even try to fi this. I also byet realm so my childs could play our world without me sometimes but now they cant join becouse they cant connect to Microsoft account
PS5, same issue here
Still same problem
Is this still on Mojang’s radar? Several updates later and still the same issue - Realms on PS5 is severly broken. I play a lot in realms with my partner. If I log in first, I have my inventory, location etc., my partner loging in later has the inventory / location of guest 1. While guest 1 keeps their inventory and location for the next login, if my partner logs in first (or exclusively), it’s their main accounts inventory and location, which is different from the guest account. So it’s a constant switching back and forth depending on who’s playing and who’s login in first. @Mojang, would appreciate an update on whether this is still being worked on.
Same here. Even downloaded our world on realms to local and still have this issue. Seems the problem is that the 2nd player doenst properly login to their microsoft account
Planning to request a refund of realms fee for the past 2 months. I created this so the whole family could play together and we clearly can’t do that. Some say to just use those guest accounts but we shouldn’t have to do that after all the work we put into these characters. Not to mention if they sign in alone, it’s back to their original characters and inventory.
There’s seemingly never a moment where Minecraft in multiplayer is not affected by a significant bug that prevents me and the family from playing together. It’s absurd.
PS5 v1.21.101 and the problem persists.
Like many others, the constant swapping and losing of inventory due to random guest profiles and their particular load order is very frustrating, especially when just trying have a multiplayer session with your little kids who simply don’t have the patience to understand bugs and frankly shouldn’t have to understand. Only after reading through all of this did all the inexplicable behaviour I was observing actually start to make sense.
I’ve been paying for Realms plus for about 16 months and in that time this is now the second major stretch of time (two months now so far and about four months during a prior problem) that my family is unable to properly play the game together.
When’s the fix coming out? It’s been over two months since this paid service fails to deliver its core offering. This is a failure that needs to be addressed.
Mojang/Microsoft ought to be embarrassed by the constant closing and reopening of this issue. I never cease to be amazed by the total lack of quality assurance that such big teams have behind them. I get it if you’re a small and scrappy startup that skips the automated testing in favor of the product roadmap, but cmon. You have the resources to never ship defects in your deployments, and yet Minecraft has been a major source of frustration around multiplayer for me and my family ever since we started about a year and a half ago. I can get used to never having my character skins ever persist, but this is next level.
To consolidate the reports, I found identical issues in the Realms section, each with their own votes:
This is a real pity. The bug started essentially at the start of most kids' summer vacations. With a week or two left depending on where you’re located, vacation is coming to a close. Not a single moment when playing was the experience without problems.
I noticed the Bedrock Dedicated Server download changed to ‘1.21.102.1’ a few days back, though there’s no indication about what may be different there from 1.21.101. I did update my BDS to that and tested this out last night. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the problem persists.
It would be great to know if Mojang has:
Reproduced the error in their environment?
Identified the defect?
Identified potential fixes?
@Mega_Spud ([Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay)):
You were the only staff(?) to respond to this. Any update? We’ll be entering month three soon.
Really annoyed when playing now as I show up as a random person with my girlfriends gamer tag and a 1 next to it 🙄
Canceled our realm membership until this gets fixed. We had to swap to a locally hosted world. Hope this gets fixed in the future.
Same issue here. Minecraft Switch 1.21.102.x. My daughter came for a visit and we cannot play in our realm. Had a problem three months ago where she couldn’t join as a second player in split screen just before the Happy Ghast drop - finally figured out to power off the switch and it resolve it then. Now, that doesn’t work at all. Nothing appears to.
I can log in as a single player to the realm. She can log in as a single player in the realm. But if either of us joins as a second player in split screen, it apparently joins as guest. If the first player is Gamertag, the second is Gamertar (1). Under the Settings/Account, the MCID is blank for the second player.
@Michael Young That’s been my experience as well. This is not the first stretch of time where multiplayer is dead in the water for my family, and we just have to wait months for a resolution., It’s very frustrating.
It’s disheartening to learn that you’re now on 1.21.102.x and it’s still not working, because I’m on 1.21.101 and I’ve been hopeful that the next release will maybe address this problem. It seems that will not be the case when it comes to PS5.
Please fix this! My family misses playing together in the same space on our PS5.
My family is arguing because of this issue. My paid realm subscription is not very useful right now. How do we get Microsoft’s attention for this bug?
@everyone on this thread. Lets brainstorm how to get Microsoft’s attention. How do we make this 100x more visible? does anyone follow any big Minecraft influencers on YouTube or X? Maybe we can message them?

I submitted my report to that link and also provided a link back to this one, which contains numerous reports.
It’s ridiculous that they’re silent on the fact that paid subscribers have effectively been unable to use their realms with anyone. That’s the whole point.
they closed my support ticket here are some of the things they said:

Starting off, I'd like to let you know that I confirmed that the issue you reported will be fixed in a future release of Minecraft. I encourage you to keep an eye out for any updates posted to Minecraft News as well as the Release Change logs. After the fix for this issue has been released, make sure you’re using the current version to see the results.

Their last release was August 13, 2025, v1.121.101: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/38783390143885-Minecraft-1-21-101-Bedrock
It would be nice if the release was soon. Sometimes there are some lengthy gaps.
I submitted via the link provided above and here is the response I got:
Allitan A. (Minecraft Help) Sep 5, 2025, 2:45 PM PDT Hello Jenna, |
But i undertnded that this has worked older versio s?
It worked perfectly before the recent Skies update.
So instead mojang/Microsoft fi the problem they write New guides that says that in splitscreen another playwr is a guest and cannot connect to Microsoft network?
Wtf?
Following my response from the team as I posted above, I have been looking through the change logs for mentions of the issue.
https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/37810171798029-Minecraft-1-21-93-94-Bedrock
This one above mentions this bug specifically, stating that as of the beginning of July update, split screen players can access their inventory from previously (this is not true, it just maintains the guest inventory)
https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/37486954069645-Minecraft-1-21-92-Bedrock
This one above says it fixed a bug (links to this bug) where Xbox split screen players always show as guest
However, I cannot find in any change log from June onwards ANY mention of this issue being an intended feature across all (or even any) platforms. Surely, if it’s not in the change logs then it’s not an intended change!
That response from Allitan (via email support) is completely wrong. I know this because I’ve been playing local multiplayer split screen on PS5 on our Realm with four players, each with their own Microsoft account, each with their own username, inventory, and spawn points.
They were never joining the Realm as a guest or as <usernameFirst (2)> <usernameFirst (3)> <usernameFirst (4)>.
In fact, that’s the only reason we subscribe to a Realm, because local multiplayer without a Realm means that everyone would have to join as the first user on the Playstation to go in the world that was created by that user, which means sharing that account on Playstation.
Support that gaslights is arguably one of the most frustrating experiences. It’s so common in tech where the reporters often know more about the tech than the paid staff.
Nik.V (Minecraft Help) Sep 6, 2025, 9:32 AM PDT Hello Dane,
Minecraft Support, |
Here is the canned slop I got from Nik.V. His punctuation after the “now” also makes it unclear:
Now, we are aware of an error that involves split screen, is this the case?
What does that even mean? Is he saying that thanks to me he’s now aware of an issue? Is he more like “now let’s get to the bottom of this problem for you” and he’s telling me that the Minecraft team is aware of the issue I previously referenced and he’s confirming it’s the same? Is he confirming that he’s summarized my issue correctly?
Why is communication so hard?
Maybe there is moneytlking. Splitscreen players are so minimal group, and they got no talent and time to fix this so it is easier in big picture just write “rules” again and say that in ps system it just dont work.
Its sad becouse we also make realm becouse i dont have everytime time to play with my children's but now i have to join to game and split that screen becouse we are forced to play local. But i noticed that my children's cant connect to MS attall
I have the Switch and Ps5 and it worked on both. I also assume it was working on Xbox, just saying.
yeah being laughed at us is really pissing off us all
I still pay for the realm but TO BE CLEAR,
THIS PROBLEM MADE ME STOP PLAYING.
I hope they fix this shit soon cause I really embrace the fact that NHL26 is out and I’ll be on my way when GTA VI is out.
Add my household to the “no longer playing Minecraft because of this bug” list.
Has been three months since we could play on our realm. We moved from offline to a realm because I have the ability to download the world on my PC and use a trim tool to manage the world size and have a permanent world to explore (otherwise the world file eventually gets big enough to have corruption).
Will be cancelling the realm and waiting for a fix, if it ever happens.
How is this issue not resolved yet? It occurred due to an update months ago prior to us moving. We have moved and settled in and still can’t play our characters on our Realm with split screen.
I’ve still got my fingers crossed that it’s been fixed in the next drop.
Though I can’t help but feel that the silence here says a lot.
If the ability for split screen players to log in was irreversibly removed either on purpose or accident, it probably makes more sense to leave a bug open and let people lose hope or forget than to announce the situation loudly.
Maybe that’s overly cynical or bleak but I just don’t understand the silence.
I have finally cancelled my membership.
I have been playing since the browser days and I really hope to get back to it soon, but until this bug is fixed I’m done!
Like amorelli above, I’m most bothered by the silence on the situation and the denial.
I wonder if today’s game drop, Coper Age (1.21.110), will fix this issue.
After nearly four months it’s pretty clear I’m probably going to have to cancel my realms plus membership if this doesn’t get fixed soon. I’ll just self-host for a fraction of the cost.
Nope copper age still doesn't fix this
I don’t see any mention of this bug fixed, so unlikely to be fixed with this release:
Still not fixed for me!
In my situation, my bf (the host) playing on PS did lost some of his items in his inventory. Me (a joinee into his survival world) was reset/ spawn as a brand new player at the default spawn from the beginning of the game + all items in my inventory GONE + my day survived reset (from more than 1500 days to 0) without dying.
And I’m a PC player*
My boyfriend and I play no matter who logs in first on our realm the second player loads in with no inventory/ levels and spawns at a beginning point.
This is still an issue 10/11/2025
My kids and I played this evening. My son logged in and my other son and I were forced to use guest accounts. We exited and each launched the game with our own account and everything is peachy. When we try to join his game using our own accounts, though, we’re guest players. This is on the PS5 and has been going on for at least three months that we can recall, possibly longer.
Follow up – for us, this is when we try to do split-screen play on the PS5 together.
still happening 15/11/25 it worked perfectly fine a couple months ago but now no matter what we try it keeps signing into brand new guest account at spawn instead of microsoft account.. anyone found a fix yet
When my kids and I play, the second player can only sign in as a guest player. However, when we each launched the game with our own account everything works fine in single player. This is on the PS5 and has been going on for at since June 2025.
This is now approaching the point where I am starting to believe Mojang has done the change deliberately and have no intention of fixing it. So basically scamming those that are hanging in and hoping for a fix. A proper statement from the developer is long overdue.
100%
We need a clear, unambigous statement on 1) if this change is intended AND 2) if both/all splitscreen players require a paid PS Plus/Xbox Live/ Switch Plus account to play on a realm together at the same time.
Any update would be good. And if there is a fix for this some notice before deployment would be good so we have a chance to safe all the items/gear from the temp characters before updating
PS5, still a problem in realms for us.
I just got a realms subscription so I can play at home on my switch with my partner split screen and in the same world from my sister’s house on her Switch. This bug makes me feel duped. Complete waste. Time to cancel our subscription.
This was working and now does not work, it’s been an issue for 6 months, there’s a reddit thread with everyone upset. Just started happening in the middle of us playing for over a year this way, really devastating as we literally can’t play together anymore
is this being worked on? Or should we cancel subscriptions?
This is on PlayStation as well! Not just Xbox
I promised to Kids that we buy Ps5 at christmas and play mine together, but this ruins our plans…
I have been paying for realms and unable to play with my kid on ps5. Time for me cancel my sub. Been holding out for nothing to change it seems. Very disappointed that a feature linked to a monthly sub is taking this long to patch.
PS4 pro here, and same issue.
All additional split screen players (logged into PS accounts on their controller that are correctly linked to MS accounts) are connecting as temporary accounts e.g. “Name (1)” rather than their actual Minecraft account.
Their accounts all work / connect to realm as normal if they play direct as the primary user on the PS4.
We wish this was fixed as we try and play four player split screen with whole family, and means when we do that the rest of the family can’t use their characters/accounts.
Another vote to fix this, as it did appear to work previously!
The same thing is happening on PS5. Both PS profiles are logged into their respective Microsoft accounts, and when one of them has logged into a Realm, the other will spawn a (1) character instead of logging in the other account. This is game breaking and needs to be fixed.
I can't even enjoy the server with my kids because of this problem… need to be fixed. Also means I can't play with my wife
I’m having this issue too. Is it new?
For me, this only happens when trying to play on a realm. Working fine on LAN
Thank you for your patience while we continue to investigate this issue.
Please note:
Signed-in players joining via split-screen may appear as guests with a "(1)" next to their name instead of their gamertag (which is as designed); their player data (eg inventory, position, etc.) should remain intact.
We are using this bug to track reports of losing progress when playing on a Realm in split-screen, which is affecting some players
If you have new information about the bug that might help the team, please feel free to comment.
The GUEST account player data remains intact. However, their main player account data does not. This is the issue.
Example: “Player one” logs in first. “Player two” second. “Player two” will get “guest account one” assigned. If “player two” logs out and logs back in, “guest account one” data remains intact. However, if both players log out and only “Player two” logs back in, the player data will be the one of “Player one”, which is not the same as “Guest account one”. Subsequently, if they go back to the original constellation, “Player two” will get back the data from “Guest account one”, and not what was previously stored under “Player two”.
Yes, exactly as AnalogAnarch describes. The issue we are reporting is not about lost progress on a Realm. It is specifically about not being able to use two separate Microsoft accounts on the same PS5 console in split-screen while playing on a Realm.
To be very clear:
This used to work perfectly on PS5. We played this way regularly.
It was broken but now works on Xbox. We play with another couple who use split-screen on their Xbox, both signed into their own Microsoft accounts, with no issues.
This problem originally affected both platforms, but Xbox received a fix. PS5 never did.
At the moment, PS5 forces the second player into a guest account, and while the guest data is preserved, the actual player’s Microsoft account data is not used, leading to the data inconsistencies that others have described. The behaviour outlined by AnalogAnarch is exactly what we are experiencing:
Player One signs in → Player Two joins
Player Two is assigned “Guest (1)” instead of their gamertag
Logging back in later as Player two’s Microsoft account causes Player Two’s account to not load as guest meaning they have no access to their inventory they were using whilst playing in split-screen.
Returning to split-screen loads the Guest (1) data again rather than the true account data
This is the core problem:
PS5 users cannot play Realms in split-screen with two proper Microsoft accounts anymore.
Again, this functionality used to work and was fixed on Xbox but not on PlayStation.
Please ensure the team understands that this bug is specifically about multi-account split-screen access to Realms on PS5, not progress loss on guest profiles.
GritPlayer above has explained it perfectly.
I went through every change log from just before the issue started to date and I couldn’t see a single place where it mentioned this change being the new intended way of working, leading us to all take this as a bug not a feature.
By doing this, it now means whoever is the second player cannot play the realm as primary or solo player as their inventory will be tied to the guest account not their own account. The whole reason we got the realm in our household was that either of us could play individually on our own profiles and we could ALSO play together. Obviously it’s great for playing with friends too, but when we can’t independently access the realm with our inventories and location intact, it seems a bit pointless to pay!
Apologies, made a mistake in my description, let me try again:
The GUEST account player data remains intact. However, their main player account data does not. This is the issue.
Example: “Player one” logs in first. “Player two” second. “Player two” will get “guest account one” assigned. If “player two” logs out and logs back in, “guest account one” data remains intact. However, if both players log out and only “Player two” logs back in, the player data will be the one of “Player tow”, which is not the same as “Guest account one”. Subsequently, if they go back to the original constellation, “Player two” will get back the data from “Guest account one”, and not what was previously stored under “Player two”. And if then everyone logs out again and only “Player two” logs back in, they will have again “Player two” data, not “Guest account one” data.
So essentially, as long as all split screen players always log in together and in the same sequence, it works fine. But if some players want to log-in in between individually, it no longer works. Which is a very common use case.
People are frustrated because it used to work perfectly fine, even with the right gamer tag. Now while most could probably live with not having their gamer tag (though calling it “works as designed” is a stretch, given that before everyone could play under their own gamer tag), the fact that they cannot play individually as well as together is a major limitation imposed by the update that broke it.
We have also problem to connect Microsoft account. Tried every trick. It came sametime with this bug. Thats why we cant play even local splitscreen with MS profiles.
Literally every problem noted here stems from split screen realms being replaced with a guest account. The problem was fixed almost immediately on Xbox so it wasn't intentional - if they fix that all problems with inventory and account sign-in while playing on your realm should be fixed… but apparently Mojang is in no hurry to fix their most popular feature.
We are using this bug to track reports of losing progress when playing on a Realm in split-screen, which is affecting some players
I think this is a strange characterization of the problem. As others have stated, a better description would be that multiple players cannot log into their individual accounts via split screen on Nintendo Switch or Playstation. Instead, they are logged in as a guest account. The progress made on that guest account is not lost across sessions. The problem is that the player should have been logged into their normal Minecraft account in the first place. Their Minecraft account is not lost in any way. If they connect as 1P or from a different device (and thus actually log into their account), the player state is all correct.
Sorry this isn’t new info, but Jay’s comment makes me feel the need to chime in on clarifying the problem.
Thanks so much for looking at this, the feature as it used to work adds a lot of value for me and my kids.
I cancelled my Realm subscription recently because of this bug. I exported my worlds and then cancelled.
GritPlayer is correct about the behavior for Nintendo switch as well.
It was broken but now works on Xbox. Still broken for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Mojang does not seem to care or does not understand that the problem was never fixed for PS5 and Nintendo Switch.
@[Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay) is there something we can do to get the correct attention? It seems internally Mojang may be using this Bug ID to track a different bug than the one that all the comments are talking about.
“We are using this bug to track reports of losing progress when playing on a Realm in split-screen, which is affecting some players”
This is only an accurate description of the current persisting version of the issue if you consider the full report itself. In this context, “losing progress” is shorthand for receiving the wrong account when joining a world or realm via splitscreen. My heart goes out to all of you on PlayStation on Realms who have now waited nearly 6 full months for this to be resolved.
I just sent a report request. Here’s what I sent.
Hi, I’d like to provide a clear, detailed explanation of the split-screen Realms bug tracked under MCPE-222048, because what many of us are experiencing on Nintendo Switch and PS5 is not the intended “guest account (1)” behavior described in the moderator comments.
This issue is not about simple progress loss or corrupted saves.
It is specifically about multi-account split-screen players no longer loading their real Microsoft-account player data when joining a Realm from the same console… even though this used to work perfectly before a recent update and still works correctly on Xbox today.
⸻
Summary of the Actual Bug
When two signed-in players join a Realm via split-screen on Switch (and PS5):
What should happen (and used to happen):
• Player One selects their console profile, which is linked to their Microsoft account.
• Player Two selects their own console profile, also linked to their own Microsoft account.
• Both players join the Realm under their correct Microsoft accounts, with their correct inventories, locations, and progression.
• Either player can later re-enter the Realm alone on their own device/profile and continue seamlessly from where they left off.
This is how the feature worked for years.
This is how Xbox still works today after receiving a fix.
What happens now (Switch and PS5):
• Player One joins normally.
• Player Two joins and is incorrectly assigned a Guest(1) profile instead of their Microsoft account.
• This Guest(1) account persists as guest data, not as the actual Microsoft-account player data.
• As long as both players always join together in the same order, the guest account appears consistent.
• But the moment Player Two logs in alone (or in a different sequence) their REAL Microsoft-account data loads instead of the guest data.
This leads to:
• Wrong inventory
• Wrong location
• No access to items or progress made during split-screen
• Switching back to split-screen loads the guest data again, not their true account data
In other words:
Split-screen forces Player Two into a guest account, and the game flips unpredictably between their real account and their guest account depending on login order.
This is not “working as designed.”
It used to work correctly, and Xbox already received a fix for this exact issue.
⸻
My Specific Reproduction Case (Nintendo Switch)
Accounts:
• Switch Account: Kaptinn → Microsoft account KaptinnKyle
• Switch Account: Hannah → Microsoft account HannahFBanana
Steps:
1. I join my daughter’s Realm solo using my Switch account.
→ I load correctly as KaptinnKyle, with my full inventory and location.
2. We restart Minecraft and open the Realm via Hannah’s profile.
3. I press (+) to join as the second player and select the Kaptinn Switch account (which is definitely linked to KaptinnKyle).
What happens now:
• I appear in the Realm as HannahFBanana(1) (a guest account)
• My correct Microsoft account (KaptinnKyle) does not load
• I spawn at world default with an empty, brand-new inventory
• My real player progress is inaccessible
This is exactly the same behavior described by other Switch/PS5 users in MCPE-222048.
⸻
Important Clarification (why this is NOT the intended “guest (1)” design)
A moderator earlier wrote:
“Signed-in players joining via split-screen may appear as guests with a ‘(1)’ next to their name instead of their gamertag (which is as designed); their player data should remain intact.”
The problem is:
The guest account’s data is the only data preserved.
The REAL Microsoft-account data is NOT used.
Players cannot:
• join on their real account,
• keep their real inventory,
• continue their own progress,
• or play solo later and find the world state they created in split-screen.
This is the opposite of how the feature worked historically.
This is why so many people (across Switch and PS5) are explaining that this is not a progress-loss bug but a multi-account sign-in failure specific to split-screen on Realms.
⸻
Platform Comparison
• Xbox: This issue appeared months ago but was fixed quickly. Xbox players can again join Realms in split-screen under their real Microsoft accounts as normal.
• PS5 & Nintendo Switch: The issue remains completely unresolved. Both platforms still force Player Two into a guest profile, making individual progression impossible.
The fact that Xbox was fixed is strong evidence that:
1. This was not intentional, and
2. There is a known route to fixing it.
⸻
Why This Matters
Families often purchase Realms specifically because the kids (or parents) want:
• to play together on the same console and
• continue individually on their own profiles with their own inventories.
That is no longer possible on Switch or PS5.
It defeats the purpose of paying for a Realm when half the household can no longer participate as themselves.
Many players in MCPE-222048 have canceled their Realm subscriptions for this reason.
⸻
Request to Mojang
Please escalate this as the same bug that was fixed on Xbox: Multi-Account Split-Screen Realms Login Loading Guest Profiles instead of Real Microsoft Accounts. It is not merely generic progress decay.
The community reports are extremely consistent across months:
• This used to function correctly
• It broke after an update on both Switch & PS5
• Xbox already received a fix
• The remaining platforms need the same fix
• This is not intended design, and the change was never documented in any patch notes
We appreciate the team’s work on this, but right now it seems like the bug is being misunderstood internally as something else.
We hope this clarification helps align the reports with the real underlying problem.
Thank you for your attention and for reviewing this detailed clarification.
Problem persists on ps5 after new Mounts of Mayhem update (1.21.130)…boo
Issue now on Xbox. If not resolved we will cancel our Realms sub. Other people have expressed similar sentiments.
I am now having this issue on Xbox series x
Same issue here. It’s been this way since the latest update. This happened with previous releases too and needs to be patched quickly. Right as everyone is getting more time to play together over the holidays and you’ve allowed this bug to reappear.
Many of us are paying for a Realms subscription and these deployment bugs should necessitate heightened resolutions from you.
Issue on Xbox series X, when is this going to be fixed????
Original reporter here. Xbox Series X, in a regular world. This bug is back. The secondary player joins under their correct username, but not with the correct player ID or data. They appear at world spawn, empty inventory, and notably they are a new player ID, as opposed to a repeat of the ID created in June 2025. This is a large issue, and extremely disheartening as the holidays have just begun.
Note to everyone newly discovering this bug, you can recover items by joining from a separate device and placing them in a chest. However, if you do continue to play on split screen while this bug is active, leave your items and armor in a chest every time you log out!! Otherwise your items will be erased when this bug is fixed for you! Also, don't use Ender chests, because they are tied to player id.
I reported this new iteration of splitscreen Realm bug over a week ago under Realms (REALMS-13753), but it was marked as a duplicate. I am not sure if this is the thread that is the duplicate, but it seems several related but slightly different issues are ending up pooled here but all under splitscreen issues.
My experience is as decribed most recently by Hacker1MC: “The secondary player joins under their correct username, but not with the correct player ID or data. They appear at world spawn, empty inventory, and notably they are a new player ID, as opposed to a repeat of the ID created in June 2025.” I have not confirmed “new player ID" (not sure how on XBox), but the other behavior is the same.
Merry Christmas! My son is on holiday break, and we don't get to play together…
Related to: MCPE-233088 , which describes the recent issue distinct from the origins of this thread.
Would love to know what is being done to fix this?
It’s been like 6 months and we STILL can’t play together on the same PS5 on our realm. It either won’t load or signs us in as guests instead of our own Microsoft accounts. I don’t know why we are still subscribed to a realm after all of this time not having this bug fixed!
This is happening for me too. I’ve tried every which way to solve this.
Hey. I dont know how it was before, but i read some where that in Ps5 every single user must have ps plus that they can play in realm at least when host isint present at same console akan playing splitscreen. This problem and forced ps plus order (we need 4 ps plus and realm) im gonna cancel my realm order.
@Jarkko Eteläaho you’re a rookie… you only need 1 PsPlus account. Then you share your stuff within the 4 members (you/wife/kids) and everyone gets to have PsPlus.
Before the bug. I used to open my Ps5 and log onto my realm and play with my friend and with my stuff.
My friend would come by later and have a drink with me, IRL.
I would sit down with him and hand him my second controller…He used to connect to his PSN Account and then join me on a split screen. He had his account and I had mine. We both had our separate stuff.
When he would leave and log out, my wife sometimes came playing with me, repeating the same steps. Taking my second controller, pressing PS button to log onto her account. Then she would proceed to join my realm by pressing the « start » button (the three horizontal lines). She would appear at her house that we built. She would have her own stuff in her inventory.
this was the time we could play together on a Ps5, sitting on a couch with different accounts.
now everyone is just Me(1) Me(2) and Me with no inventory.
just as if we played on a NES and hit the reset button every time someone connects…
Yea but if your wife dont have ps plus can she play in your realm alone? I know that splitscreen works and i know this isint the problem (quest accounts) but i tought is this still reason? If Sony detects that your wife dosent have ps plus it dosent Let her join to your realm with her account?
Not the user you're replying to, but it works.
My partner logs in solo just fine on her account to the realm even though the PS Plus is in my name. She gets her account and inventory and location where she was six months ago when splitscreen broke.
I second Bo Ells. My wife does have her own account and inventory etc. My two kids each have accounts with inventory.
Everything works as intended when playing Solo on the realm or not.
Everyone in my Playstation can access my features.
On your Main Playstation Account, Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
Select Enable.
Just so everybody knows, and in case any admin happens to look, the only issue here is while playing split screen on a Realm the 2nd player is logged in under a guest account. Fix this and all these other issues sort themselves out.
I don't think this issue is confined to realms, btw. On Xbox it is not confined to realms. You can join from a mobile device to any Bedrock world to confirm the account data is not the same as what you will find with splitscreen. When joining from split screen, you are simply bound to get the wrong player data.
So you're saying the local multiplayer is also having this issue on Xbox? Interesting.
Another worthwhile example of how much this can upset a player: tamed animals will not respect the guest account and vice versa. If you previously had a bunch of tamed animals under your proper user, then you join in split screen as a second user it’ll force you into a guest account and you will not be able to interact with your tamed animals. You can explain this to a little kid, but don’t expect them to be reasonable about it.
It’s unbelievable that we’re going into month seven of this bug’s existence.
Same issue!
I am having the same problem on xbox.
The problem i am having is during local split screen it has the same bug. The inventory and location is not tied to the Microsoft account but it's tied to the order the player logged in as but the gamer tag is based on the Microsoft account.
Have this issue currently. Xbox series X.
With over 100 comments and 200+ votes, the continued silence and lack of clarity from Mojang on this issue is nothing short of shocking. This isn't just a minor "visual bug" - it is a complete failure of a core game feature that has rendered the game unplayable for thousands of families.
The impact is real: multiple long-term players have already admitted to cancelling their Realms subscriptions because they can no longer play with their children or partners. Before this "Chase the Skies" update, split-screen Realms worked seamlessly. Now, we are met with broken guest accounts, lost inventories, and a total lack of accountability from the development team.
Frankly, this feels like a blatant money-grabbing exercise. By forcing second and third players into "Guest" status rather than allowing them to sign into their own Microsoft accounts, the game effectively strips away individual progression and ownership. It feels like a move designed to push families away from shared couch co-op and toward buying separate consoles, separate copies of the game, and separate console subscriptions just to have a basic functional experience.
We are paying for a service (Realms) that we cannot use. Mojang, stop marking this as "Resolved" when the community is telling you - loudly and clearly - that it is still broken. We deserve a statement, a timeline for a fix or at the bare minimum an explanation for why a feature we’ve enjoyed for years was suddenly and purposefully gutted.
I hate this bug so bad !!!!
@Steve Blackman have you experienced this bug since updating to 1.21.132? I am curious if this hotfix, which works for Xbox players, is functional on PlayStation or Switch as well.
It’s utterly frustrating to see that MCPE-233088 was recently created, describing the same issue, with dozens of linked similar issues, and then an update for it pushed out swiftly… on Xbox. That update does not fix this problem on PlayStation.
This is beyond frustrating. This is so unacceptable.
Any update on trying to roll a fix for the PS5?
Seven months now and nothing. I’ve been reading about self-hosting and odds are that will be my solution soon. I’ve been paying all this time for the 10 users Realm and they haven’t even bothered to acknowledge the issue. Twice now this has happened to Xbox and they fixed it, while Playstation remains with the original issue from summer 2025. It’s disgraceful. Yeah, big deal one person cancels, but they’ve completely soured my trust.
FWIW, I suspect these are different bugs. The Xbox bug cropped up suddenly after a rushed fix for a different bug (I doubt this is a coincidence). That probably made it easy for MS to fix it. Looking at the logs on my server from Xbox clients seeing this bug, they don’t look like the symptoms that the Playstation and Switch folks have reported here.
Doesn’t excuse MS ignoring SMP on the other platforms for months, mind you-- it just might explain what’s going on.
Dane, if by self-hosting you mean administering your own BDS then I can tell you it won’t help with this problem.
Our normal mode of play for a long time was split screen from our Nintendo Switch to our Bedrock Dedicated Server. But the problem here is that someone who joins split screen simply cannot connect to their minecraft account, instead being joined as whatever local/temporary/guest account everyone has been trying to describe here.
Personally, I’m pretty skeptical that the actual problem statement is understood by the team when I’ve read Jay’s comments. I think the following very simple characterization could help:
Two different minecraft accounts cannot join a server via split screen.
If Jack spends some time playing on the server alone from the Nintendo then Jill spends some time playing on the server alone from the Nintendo then they decide to play together, they will find that they cannot get both of their accounts logged in via split screen. Only 1P’s account will be logged in.
This is my experience with our own BDS, and the problems people are describing with their paid realms are identical.
I just subscribed to Realms for the first time yesterday and encountered this issue.
I thought maybe we can at least use the realms server as a shared world for individual play and then download the world for split screen. Inconvenient for sure but doable.
But when I download a copy of the realms world to play offline, I have the same issue where the second player logs in as a guest of the first instead of from their own account during split screen play. Something in the world file is being modified during the import world sequence that is not being undone when the world is downloaded.
This is further evidence that this is not a realms issue. Nothing is being done to the world file when importing or downloading in this case; the problem lies entirely in the fact that, for the last 7 months, playing in splitscreen is effectively the same as using an entirely different account. You would not notice this on local worlds created since June, because you would be consistently using the splitscreen inventory for it. But you can confirm this by joining your world from a separate device under the account that normally plays splitscreen. You will find that the separate device will use the same player data as on splitscreen from May or earlier, or potentially when that account was logged in solo on the realm, but it will be a separate player data from the splitscreen you've been using for the last 7 months. Without a warning, fixing this bug would catch users off guard, as the splitscreen data in all of their recent worlds would be replaced by the “correct” data for their account - unused player data of an empty inventory at spawn. This is how the bug was fixed both times on Xbox- if you had a splitscreen inventory while the bug was active, it was made inaccessible upon fix. This is why I urge everyone to not leave any items at all in your inventory when logging off, nor get attached to new pets tied to your splitscreen account. If possible, leave everything in a chest when logging off as a splitscreen player every time.
In an ideal world, Mojang could provide low-level tools to view and edit players' inventories directly in the file, so that both inventories could be recovered after this fix would be made. Even better would be to also manually re-assign all pets of one ID to another ID. Additionally, if implemented on Xbox, this could help me recover about 10-20 guest inventories in my world from the past 6 years, when I used to play with my siblings logging in as guest(1) intentionally. This solution would be the only change that isn't devastating to unsuspecting players with worlds from the last seven months, but I imagine it would be incredibly hard to implement, and nearly impossible to implement well.
For the time being, just leave your items in a chest when you log off from split screen so those items will not be taken away forever.
Sure. But, it should probably just be an option when you’re joining. If the Nintendo or Playstation account has an MCID login associated with it you get the option, i.e. “Sign in to <MCID> or guest?” If not then you’re just a guest.
It makes me curious about a couple things I might try later. I wonder if two people trying to join a featured server split screen can use both of their accounts? - I assume not from what we’ve seen.
I tried some troubleshooting to shed light on whether this is a problem with a local login token on the console, or a problem in the split screen login process.
I think I’ve ruled out any kind of problem with a local login token from save data.
I asked GPT a couple questions and it informed me that the Minecraft login info for a Switch user is stored as a token in the Minecraft save data, since there’s no Nintendo API for linking your Minecraft account. If that’s true, then it seems like either the Minecraft client introduced a bug with Chase the Skies that fails to use that token correctly in the split screen case, or some save data format change broke old tokens.
To rule out the latter, I logged out of my Minecraft account from the main Minecraft menu on my switch, then deleted my user’s Minecraft save data on the switch. When I started up Minecraft again, I confirmed that I wanted to create new save data instead of download my cloud data. I then had to re-link my Minecraft account using the QR code with my phone. This should create a new login token to store in the new save data. I then restarted Minecraft with a different Nintendo account and connected to our BDS, then tried joining that game via split screen from my account with its newly minted token. This did not work; I still got a local guest account. Perhaps this makes us more suspicious of the split screen login flow as opposed to some sort of stateful problem with a login token from the save data.
I’m still curious to know if anyone at mojang has been able to reproduce the issue, find the root cause, or identify a potential fix.
Then, to be clear, the storage/deletion of the login info is not the issue. Your UUID (Unique User ID) is tied to your Microsoft account, so you can't get another one/different one. Despite this being kept on-device, Minecraft uses a different UUID, similar to when playing as guest on Xbox, when you use splitscreen. When you return to a different profile, your login info is still functional - it is only joining worlds while as the split screen player that yields the wrong UUID. (Also, I believe splitscreen is prevented entirely on featured servers.)
Thank you for your patience while we continue to work on this issue.
For those affected on PlayStation and Switch, if you are able to provide a copy of the world save where the splitscreen inventory save data issue is happening it would be helpful.
Obtaining saves on these platforms is not always straightforward, but if you are able to download the world from a Realm on Windows, it should be possible.
On Windows you can use the Export world feature.
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.
It doesn’t seem reasonable to export our worlds as most of our worlds exceed 500MBs. It would require some of us to pay for storage and then giving you access to our world. I will gladly try but I will not be giving Microsoft anymore money than I actually am giving.
I’ll submit a world when I get the chance. I expect to find that a newly created world will reproduce the issue, which seems to have nothing to do with the actual world file. A new world file will hopefully be small.
To reiterate the problem, the Minecraft client fails to log in to a linked account when joining any world from split screen. It doesn’t seem to matter what world it is, or whether the world is local, an external BDS, or a realm.
Has anyone working on this tried joining a Realms world from a Nintendo (via split screen), with two different Minecraft accounts? Check the accounts section of the menu to verify MCID and gamertag for player 2. Any talk of “lost progress” or “inventory” would seem to be confusion about what’s actually happening, which is that players joining via split screen cannot log in.
I agree that a newly created world will exhibit this problem. You might want to create a new world on a separate device to skip the process of exporting from console/realms. Join it from your console from both splitscreen and non-splitscreen to ensure both “player B” inventories are created, and maybe put something different in each inventory to make them identifiable. You could rename a paper in an anvil with “host”, “player A”, “player B solo”, “player B splitscreen” for the 4 inventories. This may require 3 accounts, to avoid using a guest account anywhere, while the download via realms option would only require 2.
The problem isn't the inventory, it's the second player in split screen having to join on a guest account - which does mean you inventory doesnt come with you, but isn't the root of the issue. As stated, fixing the issue with the guest accounts will fix everything else discussed in this thread. (Just be sure to unequip and put all items in chests while logging off a guest account, cause if they fix the issue your stuff will disappear)
I don’t know if this works but here:
The easiest way to fix this would be separating accounts from Minecraft. In this game you connect too much. Connecting with a Microsoft account and a PlayStation account at the same time is probably the problem. Fixing this bug on Cbox was easy because it was a Microsoft account only thing. With the Switch, you have Nintendo. And I have never tried using my phone, connecting 4 remotes to it, on my TV and play Minecraft multi player. It would also probably be another problem because of Apple.
There should only be one account attempting to connect. It’s as if Nintendo and PlayStation don’t want to talk with Microsoft.
Frederick Dalcourt Chassé, I downloaded your world and was able to use it, so this should be good as long as it exhibits what the developers are looking for. For proof, it has a 3,000 block long dirt highway, and a gold farm on top of a crop farm, at ~1322 days played.
It does seem plausible that there’s something different about a split screen login on Xbox vs. other consoles. Minecraft has to associate nintendo users with their minecraft login locally on the device, presumably in the user-specific save data, since there’s no external association between their nintendo account and minecraft account. In the case of Xbox, connecting to online services on the console might be the same thing as logging into their minecraft account. Maybe there’s a whole step for connecting split screen which is skipped in the Xbox case. If true, that seems like a reasonable first guess about where the bug is…
@Hacker1MC you are right. I hope this can help them identify anything they need but I mostly think it is a communication or syncing problem. It feels weird that it would be « world related »
Can confirm this is an issue. Having the same issue!
