Joining a world in split screen causes the secondary player to use a guest account

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Own two Xbox accounts on the same device.

  2. Open or create world in Minecraft.

  3. Use second controller to Join as Player 2.

  4. Sign in as second account.

Expected result:

Second player joins as their own account.

Actual result:

Second player joins as ‘MainUser(2)’

Additional details:

All accounts other than ‘MainUser' on the device will lead to the ‘MainUser(2)’ guest account. Exiting second account and adding guest will open as ‘MainUser (1)’ according to the name in the top right corner of the individual screen. All accounts intentionally opened as guest will be seen as “Player” to others in the world. It is also possible to get ‘MainUser(2)’ and ‘MainUser (2)’ to occur at the same time. Due to strange world-saving issues in my past (my one world has had game-breaking issues several times over several years, getting worse in the more recent updates, particularly 1.21.80), the unintentional guest account in my main world spawned in at the location I was in when I had a massive world sync error in several days/saves/world copies ago, with all of the items the main player had at the time. This unintentionally duplicated these particular items.

This issue existed in several 1.21.90 betas but I failed to report it as I assumed it was exclusive to the Preview Version. It is not, and I can no longer play on my Minecraft world with my sibling. This is completely game breaking, and I hope it can get a hotfix.

I have a video of this that I will attach via YouTube link in comments due to size limit here.

Can confirm this is an issue. Having the same issue!

I’m having the same issue. I made a post right after you posted because originally when I looked there were none

This link above (or perhaps below) is my video documenting this issue. I am sorry to the community that I was too lazy to document this earlier, but I hoped it would just disappear like many other strange things in Preview Edition.

important to note: I am on Xbox Series X. Can anyone confirm this for other Xbox platforms?

I am also on Xbox Series X

@Markus Hedvall and Mega Spud Jay,

I have checked on my Switch after viewing Markus’ comment.

On Realms, I joined using my profile(4rcher). I turned on my second controller and chose Arielle (my daughter’s). When inside the Realm, both names on the screen located Top Right, are correct. My side shows 4rcher and the other side Arielle. When we look at each other in-game, the names are FreddyStylez for 4rcher and FreddyStylez01 for Arielle.

FreddyStylez is my Microsoft account username.

I do not know if she has the good inventory or not.

I know that I did link her accounts. When created, I turned on an logged onto her account and launched Minecraft and logged on the Microsoft account I created for her. So « she has to be linked in some way. »

On my PS5, if I do the exact same thing, my name is FreddyStylez and the other is AriAlex(both our Microsoft account names) when we look at each other. Inventory from both Arielle and AriAlex are different. AriAlex is set to have the Microsoft account’s inventory. Arielle seems to have Nintendo account inventory.

On Switch, If I logon my 4rcher account and launch Minecraft and then go on a world I created… let’s say brand new world but not on Realm. I am 4rcher and the second account is Arielle. When we look at each other, the names are unchanged.

On Switch, when I go look on Social, just FreddyStylez is connected AriAlex is offline.

On PS5, FreddyStylez and AriAlex are online.

Hope this helps you @[Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay)

Screenshots optional but can be given if necessary. Going to put the kids to bed. Awaiting a response, thanks in advance.

This is consistent which what I’m seeing on Switch and Switch 2 trying to connect to my BDS. That is, that the split screen player is still not logging in correctly.

We are multiple people now that has reported that this was not resolved for Nintendo Switch. Are we supposed to open a new issue for that, since this has been set to resolved even when it was not?

Wow, after ten months of frustrations on the PS5 this is finally fixed. The fix seems to correspond with the Tiny Takeover release.

Ridiculous, but at least we can meaningfully play as a family again. Just so disappointing that it’s been nearly impossible to commit to any long-term adventuring and world-building for that entire period.

I feel for everyone else still noting problems on platforms like Switch.

This whole experience erodes my confidence in the company’s ability to offer stable gameplay. I’m always going to be wondering whether all my items in an Ender Chest, or in Inventory, or Tamed Animals will just disappear or not working when I next log in to play.
